Talk:118th United States Congress convenes; House of Representatives adjourns without electing Speaker for first time in 100 years
Add topicNotes
[edit]I watched the live webcasts of each house for January 3, 2023 at live.house.gov and senate.gov/legislative/floor_activity_pail.htm, respectively. That was where I got the sourcing information for the first paragraph, that the House is now holding the speaker election, and Vice President Harris swearing in Murray. - If anyone's wondering why I haven't included the fourth ballot from this morning: I intend this to be an article about Congress assembling on January 3. I'll write another article when (hopefully it's when, not if!) the House gets around to electing a Speaker. Heavy Water (talk) 20:02, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
Controlled/majority
[edit]@Henrymyman: thank you for your edits, but I, if anyone, am not pejorative against Democrats. I deliberated on this word choice before choosing controlled because the Democratic Party officially does not hold a majority in the Senate; the Democratic caucus consists of 48 senators, but with 3 independents who caucus with Democrats, there is, de facto, a 51-49 Democratic majority in that house. But to say that Democrats hold a Senate majority is not fully true. Heavy Water (talk) 22:32, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
- Also WN:TIME says, "Always clarify the timezone, which can be either the country/city referred to or the timezone name/abbreviation, and its offset to UTC". That's why I listed the offset, readers shouldn't have to figure out all that themselves. Heavy Water (talk) 22:38, 3 January 2023 (UTC)
Update before review
[edit]Heavy Water, I believe the 118th 116th adjourned without a speaker. Could this article be updated before a review? SVTCobra 14:17, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
- The 116th ended in 2021, did you mean 118th? Currently what I have in the article is, "At approximately 5:29 PM EST (22:29 UTC) Tuesday, the House adjourned until noon EST (17:00 UTC) on Wednesday."
- They then held three more votes Wednesday, all of which failed to elect a Speaker, and will reconvene today.
- I can include that second sentence as an update. Heavy Water (talk) 14:37, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, 118th. OK, maybe we mainly need to come up with a more informative title. Adjourning without a speaker is pretty rare, I've read. --SVTCobra 14:42, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, last time it happened was 1923. How about "118th United States Congress convenes; House of Representatives adjourns without electing Speaker for first time in 100 years"? Heavy Water (talk) 14:44, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
