Related news[edit]

Should I link the following four articles all as related news? Doing so shows that Wikinews is following the developments of stories, which could help improve perceived relevance.

Is it normal to change the Related news section after an article is published? Does the 24-hour change limit apply to that section as well as the main article body?

As long as it's within the 24-hour limit, it's fine. All these appear relevant (note the first is this article). Heavy Water (talk) 15:16, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, two of them are already listed, so it's just a matter of adding one more. SVTCobra 18:18, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I added President Tsai says Chinese military drills in Taiwan Strait create instability in region. Cheers, SVTCobra 19:01, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I also linked one more (diff). Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 22:03, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, articles should not link to "future" articles from the perspective of their publication date. Otherwise, we could be perpetually stuck updating our archives with "Related news". So, even if they are within a day of each other, I'm gonna stand pretty firm on this one. Cheers, SVTCobra 22:45, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. The latest article in the 'series' does link to the previous three, so there is continuity. I don't see any reason to push the issue and I'm still learning the norms and nuances around here. With limited reviewers and people doing maintenance work (such as protecting and archiving) I can see the value in minimizing the number of times an article must be touched.
As an aside, has anyone proposed a bot to take care of the time-based maintenance tasks that currently get done manually, i.e. protecting pages after 24 hours, etc? Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 14:02, 17 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pages are protected for only autoconfirmed users to edit and admins to move as soon as possible after publication. Then they're archived, i.e., fully protected (the rule is something like 20 articles published subsequently). The 24-hour cutoff for major changes is not enforced with protection.
