Why is MuslimWikipedia on the front page

[edit]

On the main page, just before the "March 25" heading, there is the text:

Just like that. It's not a link, and those square brackets are visible. I guess this is a glitch. Bill3 15:29, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm no wikicode expert, but with the addition of the Wackynews section I see an even bigger area of whitespace under the daily article list.

Is it possible to make the old news (2005/2006) stuff span the full page width as two columns and eat up this space? --Brian McNeil / talk 20:41, 1 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

2007 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs

[edit]

Hey, can someone put the NHL Playoffs on the main page? I think it deserves a spot. --wjmoore 15:04, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sure. Do you have a template for it? Bawolff 17:00, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I really have to object. Does the whole world really care about hockey or cricket? No, it should be off the main page. Soccer on the other hand should be. 24.10.79.213 14:18, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

One, it's football. Two, the only worldwide football tournament is the World Cup, which isn't on again for 3 years. Now, to be honest, I don't care for, or see the need for Ice Hockey. But Cricket, now that is a worldwide tournament, and it is a current one, and a damn lot more people in the world care for Cricket than Ice Hockey, and probably more than for football as well. --86.130.26.220 17:08, 16 April 2007 (UTC).Reply
If you don't like sports, don't read it. Wikinews is for everyone, we don't restrict people from writing about what they like. On the other hand, I do understand what you mean...2007 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs is North American but at the same time Wikinews does allow local reporting. I am in the middle on this one. FellowWikiNewsie 18:29, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
There's no US team in the Cricket World Cup, so technically it's not a worldwide tournament. —Zachary talk 18:30, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think what 86.130.26.220 means is that the Cricket World Cup is international because it has many countries in it. It's not just in one continent. FellowWikiNewsie 18:35, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think what 24.10.79.213 ment was that it (hockey) isn't worldwide (that I know of) however Football (soccer) and Cricket are. 67.172.125.216 23:06, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

How about this, if you have something better to put there, and have a series of articles written on it, we'll put it up there. Seeing as to my knowledge we don't, then we can't put anything else up there. Bawolff 23:18, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Bawolff's fine judgement. However, (you knew that one was coming!) I don't quite see how a sport that all of North America cares about is considered "local." Given, most of the regular season hockey games I write about deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins (Pennsylvania, USA). Yeah, that's local, (though I hear Sidney Crosby is an idol in Canada) but the playoffs includes teams from all around the United States and Canada, making it continental news.
By the way, I don't even think the United States has a cricket team

and we don't want one! I don't even know what cricket is, other than some odd form of baseball using a long paddle and balls... or something sort of like that. I bet 95% of the population of North America couldn't tell you any more than I just did. But just because I/North America doesn't follow it doesn't mean that it should exist on the main page. Same with soccer.. I mean "Football". --wjmoore 03:14, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well they obviously do, just like Australia has a lacrosse team, they just are not very popular . I still don't see the issue with it, even if it is semi-local. so what if its Canada and USA only, we have the space and there is nothing better (more international) to put there. otherwise it'd just be less content on the main page, and that's not good. Bawolff 06:04, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • We have good coverage of the tournament and, as Bawolff says, we don't have anything else that is more international. Use the space, and hopefully we'll end up with more people reading because we have good coverage of a sport they like. I believe the guys writing sports need encouragement and I kinda miss MrM being about as he got accredited and access to games. There's probably a lot of good knowledge he could have imparted to them. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:29, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I remember, (long time ago), he used to be the only one who'd ever report via the wiki-phone, (calling in on cell phone at end of game), but no one here knew anything about sports, so we couldn't make heads or tails about what he was talking about, so we'd have to wait for him to come online anyway.</back in the good ole' days> Bawolff 02:11, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Stanley Cup 2007

[edit]

If the Stanley Cup Playoffs cannot be on the front page, neither should Cricket. Its not played in the US so I don't care about it. If it has to be international, then the only sport ever up would be the Olympics...and cricket is NOT international. DragonFire1024 03:57, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

This is the Cricket world cup, it is international. The Stanley Cup Playoffs is not international nor a world cup. I talked about this on IRC when it was first added a couple of weeks ago and the consensus there was to remove, also it not been updated a lot. Cricket is a international in this case, of the world cup. If the Stanley Cup Playoffs are added, I'll add all NZ sports to the mainpage as well, and lets add every country to the mainpage Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 04:07, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
International = worldwide...cricket is NOT in the US, therefore its not international...and I couls care less what WP considers international. Hockey is in the US, Canada, and a lopt of Europe... DragonFire1024 04:10, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Also...hockey is an Olympic sport....with i don't know how many countries. DragonFire1024 04:27, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
So is Hockey. Gosh, that could get confusing, couldn't it.
On that subject, a quick search finds the Wikipedia article w:International field hockey tournaments, which shows the most recent (international) field hockey tournament as being the 2007 Women's Champions Trophy (field hockey), in January. A quick look at that article shows it is apparently a tournament "for the world's leading national women's teams"; that's national teams, not clubs. Field hockey is a game that, in my experience, is as popular as ice hockey. So why was that tournament of national teams not on the front page, if a North American club tournament should be. --86.137.247.246 12:50, 28 April 2007 (UTC). example used only due to similarity in sport, I'm not suggesting that the tournament was more widely publicised than the Ice Hockey one (though to be honest, where I live, they were/are publicised the same - as in not at all) or anything else about itReply
  • For our sports coverage we have to rely on what contributors are interested in covering. Yes, that is likely to bias us towards some sports and away from others. Where we have a reliable source of coverage for a tournament I don't see why we should be too critical about the participants not being international enough to merit the front page. I personally don't go looking for either the cricket or hockey, but I know both are linked to from the main page. I commented on this to a friend who follows cricket and he was delighted to get ongoing match scores whenever he wanted.
Given time, and a - hopefully - increasing contribution base more sports will be covered and we'll have to start taking tough decisions on what sporting events get main page mentions. The Olympics would be a no-brainer as front page material, but baseball is something that might just get a single link to a portal instead of lists of game results. As to DragonFire1024's comment on cricket... That's one of the most international sports around. Only parts of the Americas ignore it, there are teams from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia, and the Carribean in the World Cup. --Brian McNeil / talk 15:35, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
In all fairness, pretty much every country apart from the remnants of the British empire ignores cricket. But it's certainly more widely followed than American ice hockey. --+Deprifry+ 15:48, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
ITS NOT JUST AMERICAN!. DragonFire1024 18:06, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
As with most unamerican things, that's one of it's few endearing points.

I reverted and readded. Why? 1) the writers, who looks to me only contribute to sports, deserve the recognition. 2) Does not matter how little or how many countries play the sport, it IS international. Although the US has a cricket team, its not covered anywhere in the US. If that still makes cricket international, then so is hockey. 3) No one has yet to provide actionable objections to have it removed. "I don't like it there" is not actionable, and International is not en excuse. See #2. DragonFire1024 18:57, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Reverted. This Stanley Cup is a North American Cup it is not a international world cup, the cricket is a world cup thus is more international. Even if you try to say Ice Hockey is a international sport, there is only 65 members in the IIHF. However, the reason why I oppose this been on the mainpage, is because one, it shows a North American bias, and 2 it is not internationally noteworthy, international teams do not seek it, only Canada and US teams play for it. Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 22:13, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Also, the Final of the 2007 Cricket World Cup is been played now, so we can just be done with it, and remove everything Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 22:16, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Your POV that its North american BIAS is BS, and a personal POV. We may as well not allow sports at all whatsoever. If someone does not "like the way it looks" or does "not watch hockey"then so what. Those are NOT actionable objections. If you don't like the article, then don't read it. DragonFire1024 05:15, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
We need to amend the NPOV policy. “If the US does not play a sport, it's not a worldwide sport. If, and even if only the US plays a Sport, it is a worldwide sport” Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 07:27, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
"If the US does not play a sport, it's not a worldwide sport."That's why American's invented such dull sports like roboball, men's rounders and men's netball. As to the merkin arguing that this site isn't biased towards North America, try reading it first. Then come back and we'll be glad to hear your unbiased arguments pointing out how and where it isn't.

Leads on main page

[edit]

I'm beginning to think that maintaining leads on the Main Page is something that maybe should go away, meaning no leads placements at all. Maintenance of these leads has always been been something that requires a high amount of personal, rather than community, judgement. Since space on any web page is a premium thing, perhaps the real estate granted to these leads can be better utilized for other purposes. -Edbrown05 06:40, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think that since most websites use leads, we should too. I don't understand why there is suddenly such a delay in updating them. There is definitely community input in the decision which lead should be on the main page: if the choice is poor or controversial, it will likely be removed. Until now I think we have managed perfectly to agree on the choice of leads. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 11:14, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I can see both points of view here, and would advise flexibility to allow for the placement of leads when stories warrant. If after a couple days, there are no decent leads, maybe dump the modules and allow other elements to move up. When news breaks, re-insert the leads.
As the situation is now, the leads have remained the same for three days in a row, and have likely remained so because there have been few subsequent stories that could top a kidnapped reporter or a pedophile ring being busted. I would, however, vote for a caterpillar infestation, stinky fruit or toy recall over a black box being found as a featured article. I would become more active in updating the leads, but am mainly interested in writing stories, and am loath to promote any stories I've written myself. Wisekwai 15:34, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I too hate promoting stories that I've written myself; I can only watch and hope. I must say, pleased though I was to see my article on the retrieval of the CVR, I was a bit surprised it was a) put on as a lead and b) stayed so long. I mean, it's big news to me, but I'd have thought it to be of interest only to a limited audience. Probably went on due to a lack of Cameroon or Kenya news stories. I wonder if we should introduce voting or similar for the lead? Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 16:29, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
pls do feel free to update leads, including to articles you've contributed. Wikinews usually has a small number of contributors active at a given time, so there isn't much scope (or time) for a "community determined" promotion. get well written articles get their place in the sun. i wouldn't mind getting rid of leads in portals, many of which are hopelessly unmaintained and out of date. but the main page shld have leads, if nothing else, to highlight the better articles WN produces. i have no problems with trying to come up with a more community-oriented process for selecting leads, i just don't think its going to matter much given how small the community is. –Doldrums(talk) 21:39, 21 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

On the main page it says that the medics were pardoned by the Hungarian president, while in fact (ant id's stated in the article) it was done by the Bulgarian president (as they're Bulgarian :) ).

audio

[edit]

Is there any chance of integrating audio into the main page, instead of segregating into an "audio edition" tab that, currently, imo, is rather messy and confusing (and not very up to date) I'd be willing to record stories, but I really think you should have links on the main page with each story saying "listen to this article" for items already recorded, and "record this article" to solicit volunteers. Just wondering. 24.90.17.134 04:43, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

All except for one seem to have been fixed now (or, at least, aren't visible on the Main Page). 4.245.131.210 02:46, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Got the last one. I just followed a link to the previously-titled page from the new page's history, cut-and-pasted the text from new- to old-titled page, and saved the old-titled one with the article text and the new-titled one as a blank page. I hope the vandal grows up enough so that he/she doesn't disrupt news services to get off. 4.245.131.210 03:04, 14 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
