Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Re: Student Olympiad in Tyumen: the most difficult test for future neurosurgeons is English
[edit]Thanks for the story.
Please say, who did the original reporting and what notes did they take? --Gryllida (talk) 19:57, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
- It would be great to know an answer to this question as soon as possible, Dmitri.

--Gryllida (talk) 03:14, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

--Gryllida (talk) 05:08, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
Gryllida (talk) 05:42, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

- We're getting very close; I hope you'll bear with us a bit longer. I've invested quite a lot of review labor in it myself, after all, and it's quite interesting material. I've been holding off on asking you additional questions until I've fully processed those transcripts you've kindly provided; after all, the transcripts might clear everything up. --Pi zero (talk) 06:42, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
Now published — congrats! — which means the clock is ticking on any adjustments to the substance of the article: we have 24 hours from the moment of publication, which was a few minutes ago now. Please see my list of things I didn't successfully verify in my final push to complete the review.
Cool article. Thanks for submitting, and for all your help with the review. --Pi zero (talk) 20:44, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
Gryllida (talk) 23:45, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

Looking back, and forward
[edit]Alas, my own situation prevented me from review yesterday until the 24-hour deadline had passed (well, after all I too am a volunteer, it couldn't be helped, but it is unfortunate). If not for which, I could see from the comments you'd made on the talk page, I had leeway as reviewer with which to perhaps have made some restorations of passages I'd cut during the review.
Here are a few remarks on how to approach these sorts of things. These things would not, mostly, have prevented me from some action in this case, because I'd allow for it being your first experience with en.wn review; but I do feel they need to be pointed out, for the future.
- The review process for original reporting calls for extensive documentation, the more extensive the better, with as much verifying and authenticating value as possible. For example, it's especially desirable to forward emails to scoop, as this preserves all the information in the email headers. Any time a question arises of the form "should I also provide <x>?", the answer is almost certainly "yes"; and the goal should be to provide more documentation than necessary, and do so before submitting for review.
- If you want something changed after publication, the way to request the change is to edit the article. On this one occasion I would have acted on the comments on the talk page, but that's not the way the system is set up to work.
The material is great to have, to publish here and to preserve in our archives. I'm just thinking forward, to making the process work much more smoothly in future. Thanks for the submission and for all your help during the review process. --Pi zero (talk) 15:50, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
- I also want to thank you for the great help in creating the news, and for your advice. - Дмитрий Кошелев (talk) 16:24, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
