A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Wikinews title change query[edit]

Hi there. It may be a good idea to start another follow up article about the Hurricane SriMesh | talk 02:39, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, that's a great idea as a matter of fact. Thanks for starting a page about my request, I was going to start but the work is already half way done. I just wanted to mention that there are also other places affected by the typhoon other than the Philippines, so thanks again for handling my request kindly. --98.154.26.247 (talk) (experienced editor at Wikipedia) 04:22, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It was a good idea, it is a terrible typhoon, please change the developing article any way you want, I wasn't sure if you were online or not, so started rambling a bit .... oh my goodness. It looks like China has done quite a lot of evacuations, but they are still being affected enormously, some pictures of their flooding, online....And now they even say Japan is experiencing strong winds and torrential rains.... When you are done changing/adding stuff change develop to review. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 04:33, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I know that there are no way to figure if I'm online or not since I'm not registered, this is usual since my first edit in April at Wikipedia. Anyways, I will try to expand some information and do some copy-edit on the article. This is the first article I may be largely participating but it's a start. Thanks! --98.154.26.247 (talk) (experienced editor at Wikipedia) 04:45, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Cool! Glad you have come over to edit. Will have to keep watching the typhoon, maybe another article will be needed if China or other neighboring areas are devastated as well, I know China is experiencing floods, power outages, and have nine fishermen missing already....On wikipedia articles are added to and added to, but on Wikinews once an article is "published" then another article is started to follow up the event if it is required.05:42, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
Hello there - to change the title of a news article when it is labelled with the develop or review template - one just needs to click on the tab near the top of the web page named "Rename". There will be prompts for the area where to write in the new title. Here is a much more detailed explanation - Help:Renaming (moving) a page —The preceding unsigned comment was added by SriMesh (talkcontribs)
Unfortunately, IPs aren't able to move pages -- only registered accounts that are at least four days old (called "autoconfirmed") can do that, so the rename tab won't be accessible for you. (Although you can easily create an account by filling in the form at Special:Createaccount). Tempodivalse [talk] 21:57, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • It will be good to place review upon it. Usually in wikinews articles are only posted on the main page if they are within three days of the sources used for references, so that the main page can reflect "new" news. SriMesh | talk 21:49, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
