SriMesh, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

Hi SriMesh, welcome to Wikinews! Thank you for your contributions; I hope you like the place and decide to stay! I see that you've been contributing to articles about Canada. If you're Canadian, you may want to take a look at the Canada portal, and the Canadian Workspace. If you haven't done so already, you may want to create an account.

Yes, please add the editprotected template and comment with which category you'd like to add to each article, once your portal page is created. -- IlyaHaykinson (talk) 00:49, 24 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, just a few comments:

Firstly, your signature is not currently working properly. In Special:Preferences, please make sure the box labelled "Raw signature" is ticked, to allow the use of Wikicode. This is the difference between SriMesh | talk (talk) and SriMesh | talk.

Secondly, your recent edits have not included the editprotected. As such, the articles are not being added to the category that brings them to administrator attention, so it's possible they may not get noticed for some time.

Thirdly, given the large number of articles involved, it may be more efficient to create a list - for example, create a user subpage like User:SriMesh/Arctic - of articles you want the category added to, and then put a notice on Wikinews:Admin action alerts. This helps keep Special:RecentChanges clear as well as giving admins a better idea of the scale of the category addition and of the progress already made.

Thank you, Chris Mann (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 01:54, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Operation NANOOK 2008 travels through uncharted waters

[edit]

This was not the correct way to move the article - at the top of every page you should see a "rename" tab, next to the "edit this page" and "history" tabs. I think what you did was a "copy and paste move", which has problems in the fact that it does not correctly preserve the history of the article, which is not in keeping with the Creative Commons license. I have fixed this for you. Also, please be careful about marking your edits as "minor". Typically, a minor edit is one that fixes small parts of an article, such as correcting spelling mistakes. Page moves, writing of content, and the like should not be marked as minor. You may have the "mark all edits as minor by default" option switched on in your preferences. Whoawhoawhoawhoa. Whoa. There's someone else in Saskatoon that has the internet?! :o) I can't believe that there are 2 people from Saskatoon on Wikinews hehe. When is something News

[edit]

Before you write a whole bunch of stories, I'd like to point out that Wikinews has a limit on how old a story can be before it is "not news". Something has to be new to be news, and if it isn't new, it is encyclopedic content and should be placed on Wikipedia rather than Wikinews. Wikinews articles are very time sensitive. Anyway, if a story has not had any developments newer 2 days before its publication date, it is normally not considered news any more. If you find yourself having written a story that ends up being more than 2 days old (and it also needs to have at least one source that is no more than 2 days old at the time of publication), then that story won't be published.

But it isn't necessarily a complete waste of effort. It is rare for a story to come along and then never have a new development. So if you find yourself with a "no longer news" story that you've written, you can save it somewhere and reuse almost all of it in a few days, or a few weeks, or even, on occasion, a few months (depending on how long it takes for a new development in the story to take place), and then write a new story, reusing most, if not all, of the background from your unpublished story. That way you only have to write a new first paragraph (or two) specifying the new "who, what, when, where, how" of the most recent development.

I'm not sure if I was entirely with that rather rambling explanation. Gopher65talk 19:57, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

sandbox

[edit]

Just a heads up, I changed the redirect from Sandbox to point to wikinews:Sandbox instead of your article, as no one is really going to link to your article by the title sandbox - and someone might be looking for the sandbox, and end up at your article, which i think would be bad. Hope thats ok. Thanks. Bawolff 21:36, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Reviewing articles

[edit]

Hi, I saw that you started reviewing articles recently. Unfortunately, due to technical limitations, only users with editor status are able to review/publish articles, and you don't seem to have that tool. Thus, I've sadly had to invalidate one of your reviews. However, you can apply for editor status at Wikinews:Flagged revisions/Requests for permissions, if you want to start reviewing articles. Thanks for your understanding. Best regards, Tempo di Valse ♪ 00:05, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

You're right, something ought to be said about the review rules. I don't like it either, and the reviewing policy isn't very clear on this matter. By the way, you don't have to be "invited" for editor status -- you can nominate yourself here. I think you should pass easily, given your large edit count and experience. Best regards, Tempo di Valse ♪ 00:25, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

[edit]
This star is in recognition of your excellent efforts in creating news articles. Thanks much, Wikinews needs more editors like you! Tempo di Valse ♪ 01:06, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please have a look at the history of changes on this article.

  • Recent events should be described in an active way - today, yesterday, last friday... etc.
This I had been doing, then changed as sometimes articles don't get published right away, and then the article isn't in past tense if it is written on the 'today' of the event, and is published a week later. So now I write for a week later...Will try to return to the 'today'-ness aspect
  • The article contained duplicated information.
  • Initially it claimed three sources, two pointed to the same url.
AHH...I will look for the contributing news source as I had three newspaper articles open one had a cropped reuters, and I suppose the other had a fuller Reuters as one was 2 paragraphs and the other 3. So I will use your advice and look for Reuters plain old plain old.
  • Pictures can be put on the left when an infobox is in use - this helps avoid a lot of whitespace at the bottom, and makes short articles more reasonably fill a browser window.
  • Generally speaking I do this, but I wasn't sure if this was the best picture so I put it at the end for a reference of the location. There wasn't an event type picture.

Going back to the source template I deleted, it cited Reuters. In most cases you can pick a few keywords out of the 3rd party's article and do a search on Google news with the qualifier 'source:Reuters'. This is less 'secondhand' than citing someone who is citing Reuters - and if you do get to the original Reuters story you should drop the 3rd party one unless you are sure they have added a notable amount of their own research which you require for your article.

  • I usually do peek at the history of mine and other articles to see what I am missing and what I should change. Thank you so much for the helping hand. Maybe with practice I will get better so I save others a lot of work. :-) --Brian McNeil / talk 11:51, 15 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hia. You're mostly using the template correctly, but not quite;). In your recent article you did this:

  •

This is the correct format for an exteral link, not for a wikilink. Instead, use this format:

  • Averette

You simply use the same system that you'd use to link to a userpage on Wikinews, but you place a prefix on it. "w:" goes to English Wikipedia, "commons:" goes to Commons, "wikt:" goes to wiktionary (a handy one for article links). A complete list of interwiki prefixes can be found here, at metawiki. Also, sometimes you'll find yourself linking to an userpage that is on, say, German Wikipedia. Linking to non-english wikis is easy: you just place the language code after the wiki-prefix you'd normally use. So "w:" links to English Wikipedia, and "w:de:" links to German Wikipedia.Gopher65talk 01:26, 16 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

"In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked. Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious" Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry Bas.

This is a bit confusing. I don't know why the word "Bas" is there. Also the bit about the joint secretary (Police) is a bit confusing.

Does Bashundhara City Complex have a link on the English Wikipedia. I also think the fact that the Bashundhara City Complex is the mall needs to be clarified earlier in the story.

The changes you made after my review are good, it just needs a few more copy edits. Thanks, —Calebrw (talk) 03:40, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Made changes and wikilinked Bashundhara City shopping mall complex. I don't know why all the press releases state his title as joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, and I am not from Bangladesh myself, but I removed it because of the confusion. Hi, sorry for leaving you in the dark with my comments - that definitely wasn't the intention. The changes you have made make it sound a lot more like a news article - covering all aspects of the story, not just the positive parts (which the previous article seemed to do to me, I don't have any recollection of the controversy section). We have to be careful with press releases as they are often biased towards the company or product in question - we must aim to be neutral in our reporting. As far as I know, we don't link to foreign language Wikinews editions in the related articles section. However, if a foreign-language article is a translation of, or similar to, the English article, it is appropriate to insert an interwiki link to the foreign article, so a link will appear in the sidebar on the left of the screen in the "In other languages" tab. (See this Meta page for more info on interwiki links, if you don't know about them already.) I hope this helps, tempodivalse 00:43, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

hello, and thank you for taking the time to review the article. i hope u like the new version
about the state specific data, i took it from the PNAS publication (supplementary information's table S2, page 12). the ratios are 0.362 ± 0.089 and 0.616 ± 0.085 for Sonora, and 0.660 ± 0.138 and 0.285 ± 0.120 for Guerrero. i converted these to percentages and, taking into account the uncertainties, rounded up Sonora's values to units, and Guerrero's to tens. the comment on the correlation with Mexico's history is in the second paragraph of the discussion (page 5)
in this same paragraph is the data from "Although West African", except for the Asia part, which is from the table mentioned above.
the quote u mention i translated into english from a source in spanish (last paragraph of the one by Claudia Herrera Beltrán). i transcribe here with word by word translation: "con(with) una(one) gota(drop) de(of) saliva(saliva) podamos(we can/could) saber(know) si(if) damos(we give) o(or) no(not) un(a) medicamento(medication)"
the large sentences were there because i tried to follow the style guide's suggestion to use 2-3 sentences per paragraph, but i guess readability comes first. i hope the changes i made made things better
the reason for less data being analyzed seems to be that the president rushed things because he was under fire for his lack of support to science. not only were data left out, but theres also a press release with very stupid grammar errors that makes it obvious it wasnt even proofread. i added this to make the article look more balanced since all the sources were celebrating on the event. if the paragraph is out of place or is original reporting or whatever it could be left out.
thanks again! Revoluc (talk) 04:12, 15 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: Question concerning Mexico presents first population-wide genome map for a Latin country

[edit]

I've read through some of your questions on my talk page. Let me see if I can explain some of them.

  • Has the journal entry been entered under sources correctly?
It might be better to use cite journal for this sort of sourcing.
  • Can/should the talk page entry about page numbers and percentages be entered as OR at all?
Original reporting is information that you obtain first-hand (i.e. from an interview, attending an event, etc.), not something that you obtain from another source (which this is), so I think it shouldn't be entered as OR. However, you should make a note on the talk page of the specifics what information you took from the book (i.e. page number, and a direct quote of the relevant information).
  • Is there a different place I should ask these questions - water cooler &c?
You're certainly welcome to ask any questions at my talk page - I'll do my best to answer them - but if you want your questions to get a bigger audience, you could ask at the water cooler, which is better watched, where you will probably receive more answers.
  • So if you read my talk page, how should I proceed for the peer review when I cannot get at the journal, but everything else is verified as OK and found in the articles, and the requested c/e went well. Is there anyone else on WN who can access journals ... I know sometimes students can.
It's still in beta stage, but Google Books provides some photocopies of books (mainly old public domain stuff), although if this one is copyrighted I doubt it will be there. Still worth a try, though.

Hope I helped! Tempodivalse [talk] 14:20, 15 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Malawi pardon article

[edit]

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for your help with the Malawi President pardons jailed gay couple article. This is my first attempt here on Wikinews, so I really appreciate the help. Is there anything you would suggest for any future articles I would write? Again, thanks --DUKyleXY (talk) 17:46, 29 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Busy elsewhere? We understand, but this is a notice of privilege expiry!

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.
