Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome, Argha.hazra! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Copyright violation
[edit]- Please read the comments in the failing review on your article submission. You cannot create an article by cutting sentences out of other people's work and sticking them together in a different order, or changing a word here and there. To do so is plagiarism. --Brian McNeil / talk 13:36, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry! It was my first time. I didn't know. From next article I would write them myself. Argha.hazra (talk) 13:42, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
North India blackout affects over one half billion people
[edit]Hi. Just a note to say, for most contributors the first article is the hardest, because it's when you're learning the basics of en.wn writing. Once you have the basics, it gets much easier (not that any of us ever stop learning, of course). --Pi zero (talk) 15:16, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I understand your say. But this time I did try my best. So please help me publish it! :) Argha.hazra (talk) 11:11, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
- The article's own troubles were compounded by numerous other articles arriving on the review queue, competing with it for attention. Looks like this one got away from us. Hopefully it's been a learning experience. Honestly, entrenched sourcing problems like this are exceedingly hard to fix; the best way to deal with them is to not let them arise to begin with, when first writing the article. --Pi zero (talk) 13:46, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thank You, anyways. I did learn form this experience. - Argha.hazra (talk) 14:50, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Hang in there!!
[edit]It's a shame your blackout article didn't make it through review.......it was a fantastic effort!!! Hang in there!! Surely, with such a cataclysmic event, there're some current stories you could use to start a new article with, yes? Additionally, if handled correctly, you can even fold those old articles (from various sources) into that article's list of sources.....there's a few different ways you can make it flow, but again, if an event is huge enough, you can always make something work!! Please try again!! --Bddpaux (talk) 00:56, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- To be certain, I got a new article started for you! Check in the Newsroom! --Bddpaux (talk) 14:26, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
"Fearless Felix" influence spacesuit design
[edit]Hi, your article is interesting. It is not ready for publishing yet, please, take a look at the review comments; the main concern is that you only tried to write the first paragraph (see WN:C). It should be possible to address the issues while the news is still fresh and re-submit the story for re-review. Thank you. --Gryllida 10:58, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi. The article was assessed not ready for publication. Please see the review comments, and detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 18:51, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
