Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome, Dalia098! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Please use {{source}} to list sources at Former Egyptian PM Hosni Mubarak to face trial Thank you!
[edit]Your article
[edit]I think you may have been confused by the moves/deletions with respect to your article. Don't worry; it is quite safe and is, in fact, quite good and has been published here: Australia, Malaysia closing in on refugee agreement. Thanks for writing it! Out of interest, are you a University of Wollongong student? Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 14:57, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]yes! i am a wollongong uni student!!
:) :) :)
so far i've made 3 contributions so i'm feeling very proud! attempting to post news stories is getting quite addictive!
- Great!
- Now, a tip for you and your classmates; when you look at any article you submit that ends up published, check the edit history, and the talk page. You may want to go through the edits made by other users one at a time so you can see which stylistic faults they've been correcting. I'd strongly recommend you all read this essay on article format and presentation. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:03, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit]ok will do :)
my tutor david said you are the 'go to' man for any questions or comments we wish to make on our submissions. i hope all our articles are to a high calibre. i've really gained respect for the articles allowed to be published here because i know they've gone through rigorous reviews.
Source template
[edit]Hi Dalia,
I started to look at your Egypt story, but I couldn't open any of your sources. Confused, I went into the code and found out you were putting a "}" at the end of the URLs, which messed up the target page. The last citation didn't have all the right source template parts. This is normal when first starting out. The source template puts all the parts together in the same format everytime! So it's important just to get the parts and what goes there right. Here's the code for you to get a better look at the parts: Template:Source
Good luck, Crtew (talk) 03:20, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
Dalia,
I looked at your piece again and I found some promising points and some problems. Can you fix the problems? This is an important story. I actually thought of doing it myself on Sunday night. But I would like to see you publish it before it grows stale. Crtew (talk) 05:14, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
ok! :)
[edit]is it possible that someone ammended my terrible citations ?
when i went back in to edit the hyperlinks the } symbol after my links was gone and all the citations looked perfect! if so thankyou mysterious wikinews editor! is it ok to publish now?
Fixed Crtew (talk) 16:18, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
I went ahead and updated the story and submitted it before it went stale. The first thing I did was to update it since the last edit. Second, I reordered the information for flow and evidence. Third, I balanced it between Egypt and Israel for neutrality. Fourth, I brought in evidence for any type of assertion. Finally, I placed wikilinks, included the Egypt infobox and selected categories. The article was published as Egypt cancels 15 year gas supply contract to Israel. Cheers, Crtew (talk) 16:18, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Accreditation request
[edit]I've left some comments, and some questions for you, on your accreditation request page. --Pi zero (talk) 01:52, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
....and here we are.
[edit]On April 25th, you asked for accreditation. Since that date, you've made no edits, no contributions to the project.....nothing. I'm not being snitty here.....please hear me. This project is about people giving to the project......not just taking. Accreditation is serious; as I said, you can do MOUNTAINS of reporting (including OR), without a shred of accreditation, but I'm unable to see that you've contributed in any way whatsoever after requesting that credential. Please don't go away mad, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, please don't go away. Contribute, write, edit, opine as thou wilt, but please: do something. Bddpaux (talk) 17:19, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
sorry!
[edit]I've been up to my ears with Uni work (graduating next month and the final exam revision for my subjects are coming in thick and fast!) and have been working casually almost every day. not that thats an excuse but i think my request for accreditation may have been a bit over presumptious of me at this busy point in time. feel free to remove it. hopefully after graduation i'll get back on here and renew my love of journalism again. i don't really need to be an accreditor - i'm happy to write for the love of writing and leave the editing to you good sirs and madams. thanku for the care and concern! x dalia098
