Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Hi

[edit]

I've written up a review of your article. The first article for Wikinews is usually difficult; there's a lot to learn all at once, at the start, to produce an article that can pass review. I'm really hoping your article can make it to publication, which doesn't always happen (though hopefully if not it can still be a massive learning experience that makes the second article much easier). --Pi zero (talk) 17:19, 9 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank You

[edit]

Hi Pi Zero! Thank you for reviewing the article. I only believe in myself that there is no difficult for me in the next turn after receiving comments.

Forgotten victims of war in southern Philippines forsaken

[edit]

Hi. I have written review comments discussing two difficulties I found with the basis of the article; see also (as always) the detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 16:42, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dehgel

[edit]

Hi! Welcome to Wikinews.

I am an accredited reporter and would be happy to help you with original research when the need arises. If there is anything that you're writing about and some information is missing, I can use my accreditation to increase the likelyhood of the relevant entities responding to an inquiry. Please let me know if you would like to retrieve missing information for your stories one day and I would be glad to assist.

Regarding your story I appreciate you sharing it. Is there a recent "focal event" that occurred to honour the war victims in Southern Philippine? If so, please let me know and if it is still fresh then we can attempt drafting the story.

To reply please click here.

Many thanks and best regards,

--Gryllida (talk) 02:35, 21 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Question

[edit]

Hi Gryllida,

Your effort would be highly appreciated. The issue on "forgotten war victims in Southern Philippines" is actually fresh focused on the Philippine's Law and the international humanitarian law to let readers understand the scope of dispute in southern Philippines.

--Dehgel (talk) 13:19, 21 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for this clarification. Has the law recently changed? Gryllida (talk) 20:36, 23 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Question

[edit]

Hi Gryllida,

The law have not changed however it has not been practiced in wars since 2016 because of the two rivals.

--Dehgel (talk) 01:53, 24 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

If it was not changed recently then there is no "news" to write about. Would you agree?
Perhaps write an essay or a book at one of the {{sisterprojects}} instead? I.e. at Wikibooks or Wikiversity.
Please let me know. Gryllida (talk) 02:19, 24 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Re 261 eaters down in Former PH 1st lady's 90th birthday

[edit]

1) I have trouble with this grammar

"Imelda Marcos thru her party organizer has featured her birthday celebration with speeches among guests of honor, singing and her late strongman husband’s cakes bearing structures; that the DOH probe and confirming the triply cautious suspected food poisoning party, which its result would be released in uncertain date. "

2) At the talk page the reviewer said there needs to be an event after Wednesday. The latest date in sources that I can see is July 5, 2019. This satisfied the freshness criteria at that time, but not anymore, this has happened over 3 days ago. :-(

Is there any chance you can find an update about the health of the affected people? Or anything? Please?

--Gryllida (talk) 04:55, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I saw you renamed your article. I have a few suggestions on improving it a bit more. "PH" is somewhat unclear what its referring to, so writing out Philippines/Filipino would be better. Generally on Wikinews, numbers less than 20 are spelled out in words, so "First Lady" instead of "1st Lady". Headlines should also be in present tense instead of the past tense, so "hospitalizes" rather than "hospitalized". You can find some helpful advice on writing the headline at Wikinews:Headline. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 15:36, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Dehgel (talk) 23:40, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you mikemoral! I'd love recognizing Wikinews rules rather than other rule in writing articles. That is a huge help and highly appreciated. Yet, you give me an idea to share Wikinews ethics and rules in aspirant writers, in fact, it is one of the appreciated real pattern in journalism. Thank you! thank you! 23:40, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Glad to help! The other problem in publishing your article is that Wikinews only publishes news that's considered fresh, which is usally defined as published about an event in the last 2–3 days. The most recent reports are from July 4th which is now nearly a week ago. However though, if new information has come to light within a week of the event occuring (say, for example, a food-poisoned victim spoke out, or a condition worsed and was reported, or Ms. Marcos released a statement on the mass food poisoning).
It's very important to remember though that on Wikinews not every story succeeds, but new contributions are always welcome. Sometimes the best course of action is to acknowledge the publication deadline was missed, and to just move on. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 06:24, 10 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
I am hoping there will be an update when the reason is known. Perhaps the website of the local police and the local hospital, and their social networks, might be the best places to monitor. Gryllida (talk) 06:30, 10 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Dehgel: I should clarify that I hope you get your article published. Like Gryllida suggest, keeping an eye on updates to this story can lead to a published article. :) Just remember you might need to change the focus a bit.
I'll give an example: since the health department says a Staphylococcus species caused the illness, then if the health department revealed that it was because a food worker was themself sick with a Staphylococcus infection, then you could write about that. The focus would change somewhat to focus on the source of the illness, so for example, "Chef with Staphylococcus infection caused mass food poisoning says Phillipine health department". I hope this helps! —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 06:58, 10 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
mikemoral & Gryllida : I have updated the article sourced within July 3 - July 4, 2019. I got the source of illness.

┌────────────────┘
Hi Dehgel, I took a look at the article. Unfortunately the problem is still there, that it's not recent enough. On Wikinews, we report news from within the last three days. So even though you've updated the information there's no new information from with the last three days (since July 10, at earliest). —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 09:14, 13 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

I have sympathy for frustration at an interesting story that didn't make it to publication, and some aspects of the article have continued to improve, but, as noted, without some new focal event the article is a no-go. As another Wikinewsie once put it, "don't marry the article"; that is, don't over-commit to a single article. Not every article makes the grade; when an article doesn't make it, one needs to be willing to let go and move on to something else. --Pi zero (talk) 14:04, 13 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Pi zero, I lost my interest to improve that article after digging all sources but still no exist, so I already moved on. But as of now, if you could help directly pointing the solution to the problem on the article each paragraph, maybe I can make it. Thanks for the guides. --Dehgel

Earthquake injures 25 people in southern Philippines

[edit]

Hi. Please see my review comments; I'm hopeful we can fix this up in time to publish it before it loses freshness. --Pi zero (talk) 14:17, 14 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Pi zero, I did your instruction, I hope that looks fixable for you if there is/are problem(s) in the article. --Dehgel 14:17, 14 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
You'll want to do some reporting on the magnitude, of course; and when you're done revising the article, remember to resubmit it for review. --Pi zero (talk) 14:57, 14 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
(Ah yes, I see mention of magnitude... :) --Pi zero (talk) 15:00, 14 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Published. Congrats! See (as always) the detailed history of edits during review. --Pi zero (talk) 19:09, 15 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

I'm so Glad! It's really overwhelming. Thank you for the edits, guidelines and comments Pi zero. --Dehgel
Thanks!!! I didn't know of this earthquake til now. It would be interesting to know whether it was forecasted beforehand. Gryllida (talk) 00:22, 17 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dehgel, I've moved your article "Imelda Marcos birthday poisons 261 party-goers" to your userspace since it wasn't published. This way you can keep the draft you wrote as future reference for your future contributions. Computer programming

[edit]

What computer programming languages do you know? I am just checking as I or someone else might ask for a little bit of your help or advice with programming for Wikinews, and knowing your area of interest and expertise could help. --Gryllida (talk) 07:16, 22 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gryllida, I often and expertise writing code using PHP, MySQL, Javascript, CSS/CSS3, XML, and jQuery for websites as traditional for this time in our region; Microsoft's VB.ET, C#, SQL, Visual C++ for software. But when I use Linux/Ubuntu, I am comfortable with machine languages Python, C++, and Java. I'm interested in Android App but not often used it since it is not trending here in our region.

Philippine Commission on Human Rights probes death of seven children

[edit]

This is an interesting story, and I would have liked the opportunity to get to its review while there was time for revisions within the freshness window of a focal event on Sunday. --Pi zero (talk) 16:30, 31 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry because I haven't worked on this story since October 31, 2019 due to the continuous quakes here. 10:45, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Sorry this article is having such a bumpy road. --Pi zero (talk) 02:00, 19 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
