Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome, Mastershake177! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Welcome!!!!
[edit]A profoundly astute first-article on the Playstation Vita submission! I didn't wholly agree with some things said about it's newsworthiness, but hey.....tomorrow's a new day, right? Wikinews is a good place and a good thing. Hang in there and let me know if I can help in any way!!! Bddpaux (talk) 04:05, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Hey there. You may have missed it, but I actually just finished checking the script right before you came along and added the review template. The current version is cleared for recording! :) Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 14:07, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi. I not-ready'd this article; it needs to be reorganized, as I tried to explain as best I could in the review comments.
You might (perhaps) find it helpful to take a look at style guide section WN:SG#The first paragraph, and the two sections that immediately follow it. (Not that the whole style guide isn't a good read :-) There's also WN:Writing an article, and perhaps the (under-construction) WN:Article wizard. --Pi zero (talk) 02:33, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I meant to congratulate you on publication of this, and (inevitably :-) also drop a pointer to the detailed history of edits during review. (We have in mind eventually, if we can arrange it, to have customizable notes like this automatically distributed by the review gadget, whenever an article review is submitted.) --Pi zero (talk) 22:48, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Looks like fairly ambitious OR. Cool. The presentation needs some work, I know. (What else may be needed, of course, I don't yet know. :-)
See review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 20:38, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
- KILLER EFFORT! I MEAN THAT!! I did a few spots of cleanup here and there......still not sure if it's going to make it through review or not, but one stellar effort, for sure!! Bddpaux (talk) 00:26, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
- {{QuoteLeft}} and {{QuoteRight}} are used in news for quotes that also occur in the article text. (This is different than the way Wikipedia uses them, I gather.) I commented out the QuoteLeft, but it might indeed be better to add the quote into the article text. --Pi zero (talk) 03:26, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Bddpauxfor your words of encouragement. As for the article, is there something that I can do to get it past peer revision? I made changes today in an attempt to make all my information current and to have all the up-to-date information to inform readers. Mastershake177 (talk) April 25, 2012
Congratulations, I know you worked hard on that story! Good work, Crtew (talk) 21:27, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
