Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Re: US troops vaccination[edit]

"Some exemptions may be allowed to troops if they have a legitimate health reason or religious belief that would prevent them from receiving the vaccine." sounds interesting. Is there any specifics - examples of religious beliefs that would be applicable, perhaps? --Gryllida (talk) 00:42, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Gryllida: I believe that some forms of more strict Islam and Orthodox Judaism oppose any vaccinations. There is in fact precedent in the United States with around 5 or 6 states expressly allowing exemptions to mandatory vaccinations for children for religious reasons. This is wholly opposed by any legitimate medical association in the United States though. Not sure how the military will implement it but I can surely see some court cases in the future. --Newsjunky12 (talk) 00:48, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Gryllida: Here's a link to a paper written by the NIH thats really interesting in highlighting the different religious opposition to vaccinations. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5141457/ --Newsjunky12 (talk) 00:49, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you. Gryllida (talk) 01:16, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Medical marijuana article[edit]

Try not to get too disappointed....... our reviewing flow here is a bit slow. Back up, take a deep breath and submit a new article!--Bddpaux (talk) 20:09, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No worries! I was unaware of the rule on not reporting on things more than 3 days old. Now I know. Also thank you for letting me know the reviewing is a bit slow. I was beginning to wonder if my other two articles were going to get lost in the sauce. But yes I will continue writing thanks for the message! --Newsjunky12 (talk) 20:35, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For sure.....I'm trying to start on one right now. Trust me: I have my own feelings/opinions about the lack of reviewing taking place.....but I will just tuck those into my pocket and keep working for now.--Bddpaux (talk) 01:58, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately...........[edit]

....in terms of the event itself, we are several inches beyond 3 days now, which is unfortunate. Until we get some of our NUMEROUS Reviewers showing up to actually REVIEW ARTICLES (yeah, I said it), this will continue to be an issue. I strongly feel, with the smallest bit of effort, this could easily be spun into something much fresher.--Bddpaux (talk) 21:42, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yikes. First of all I saw your post on the Water Cooler section and I hope you enjoy your break. Whenever you get back or get the chance I just have a few questions. 1. Can I safely assume that this will happen to the other three articles I have written? 2. For freshening up how would I go about doing that, just trying to find an update to the story, source it, and add the info to the existing story? 3. If I DO end up freshening up the story, when I re-submit it for review, will it be reviewed immediately or will it be put in the back of the line and we'll be here again in 3 days? Thank you for reviewing the story and thank you for any assistance. --Newsjunky12 (talk) 22:09, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your articles[edit]

Just wanted to say that I've noticed the work you've been doing on a number of articles, and I wanted to say - great job! I do understand that perfectly good articles going stale can be really frustrating, so I really hope one of your articles does get published soon. :) --LivelyRatification (talk) 09:31, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

LivelyRatification Unfortunately it's looking like all 4 of my articles are going to go stale including the one I freshened up and re-submitted because it went stale. Honestly this has been fun and I really enjoyed writing articles but I don't think I'm going to continue if all that's happening is me writing articles and then just throwing them in the trash. Appreciate the support though and I'll check back into Wikinews every now and then to see if things are better. --Newsjunky12 (talk) 15:09, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Newsjunky12: Thought I'd let you know - I've become a reviewer recently, and I'll be free for most of the day today (it's about 8am here). You don't have to do anything if you don't want to, but if you'd like to write an article, I'd probably be able to review it today. --LivelyRatification (talk) 21:50, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
