Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Swine Flu
[edit]I left a message on your article's talk page. Xavexgoem (talk) 17:03, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
I added some English sourcing citations to the article, but I couldn't verify the state specific facts you added to the article such as the paragraph beginning "Genetic diversity" "Although West African" and I searched for this quotation as well "With a drop of saliva we would be able to tell whether to prescribe a medication or not" to no avail. Perhaps this is in the image I cannot open large enough to read. The rest is verifiable.
Can you make some sentences shorter or one long one into two perhaps...Like this one starting..."During the ceremony" place the facts in time order and in two sentences, and it will read smoother. The lead sentence could stop at "genomic medicine " With the rest being another sentence in the next paragraph. Reduce the length of any other long sentences and pop me a message about the above, and it is good.
It is interesting the facts about how large the research ie 10 states but only 6 states made it into the database, and 4 amerindian populations but only again 1 being compiled. It doesn't state why anywhere but I wonder why. SriMesh | talk 01:51, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- I am getting some questions answered about Peer reviewing but I did a partial one, and when I have answers, will know how to continue. Good work BTW SriMesh | talk 05:12, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- Well I passed the article, but reviewed the paragraphs which I couldn't review, as I cannot open the journal to verify unfortunately. I left a note on the talk page if anyone else can open the journal - to verify, then the info can be re-entered. SriMesh | talk 16:32, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
