Wikinews:Request an account at Wikinewsie

From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!

This is the page to request to be granted an account at Wikinewsie, a wiki which contains prepared news stories with embargoed and sensitive information that should not be made public. Please note that only administrators of the English Wikinews and accredited reporters will be granted an account there; requests from other users will most likely be declined.

To request an account, please provide the following information:

  1. Your username.
  2. Your email address. It is needed so that a password for your account can be emailed to you.
  3. Sign your request - you must be logged in for validation of the request to occur.
  4. New requests should go at the bottom of the page.

After your account is created, go to the login page at Wikinewsie and log in using the randomly provided password, which will have been given to you by email. You will be able to change your password once you have logged in using the provided one.

Account creation procedure

[edit]

Wikinewsie administrators should follow the below process to create an account on someone's behalf on Wikinewsie.

  1. Go to the Special:Createaccount screen, when logged in as a sysop.
  2. Enter a username and an email address, and click the "by email" button.
  3. The account will be created with a random password which is then emailed to the given address.

Done I've emailed you the password (i would have had the system do it automatically, but hit the wrong button. stupid login menu). Cheers. Tempodivalse [talk] 15:07, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done Check your email for a random password provided by the system. Welcome to the cabal. :-) Tempodivalse [talk] 19:43, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, I have to mark this request as Not done, at least for now, because you are not an administrator or accredited reporter here, sorry. (Maybe try again if your AR closes as successful?) Tempodivalse [talk] 16:43, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Shall do. I wasn't sure about the access policy with Wikinewsie. Computerjoe (talk) 17:45, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah right it says on Wikinewsie! Computerjoe (talk) 17:56, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It says here too. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:15, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So it does. I'm obviously half asleep. Thanks for your time. :) Computerjoe (talk) 21:38, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can I reapply now? Computerjoe (talk) 18:47, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think so, now that you've been officially accredited. Tempodivalse [talk] 19:22, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I reapply. Computerjoe (talk) 17:05, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I hereby request the account SVTCobra at Wikinewsie. My e-mail address is wikinewssvt [at] optonline [dot] net. I am a Sysop at en.wikinews in good standing. I agree to abide by the confidentiality standards for embargoed news and to the protection of confidential sources that may be discussed at Wikinewsie. Cheers, --SVTCobra 23:40, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done Account created, I dropped you the sysop bits as well. Welcome to the cabal. Tempodivalse [talk] 00:17, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the server is slow with permission ... but I got the emails with the link to confirm the account, however I get an error message saying I must be logged in to access that page. --SVTCobra 00:26, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hum, that's odd. I might have done something wrong. I will email you the password to the account instead. Tempodivalse [talk] 00:34, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Password sent by email. Tempodivalse [talk] 00:38, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tempo. I finally got in. Cheers, SVTCobra 00:45, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can you tell me which page you could not access for login? --Brian McNeil / talk 21:50, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting access/account Markie at Wikinewsie. Here I am an admin and also have OTRS access so I familiar with confidentiality. Email is newsmarkie@gmail.com. Cheers --MarkTalk to me 21:05, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done Account created, check your email for the account password. Tempodivalse [talk] 21:27, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No objections, apart from you having handed in accreditation and adminship, plus still having a retired notice on your talk. I'd certainly support an adminship app if the latter changes - and that would meet the criteria that've been applied here so far. --Brian McNeil / talk 12:54, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still an admin here, the retired notice on my talk page is clearly incorrect and so I've removed it. Adambro (talk) 13:09, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies, thought you'd resigned adminship too and only checked the accredited reporters. Watch your email. --Brian McNeil / talk 12:49, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I herby request access and the account Decap at wikinewsi. I have been given accreditation from wikinews and as a member of the Norwegian Union of Journalists i am bound by the Code of Ethics of the Norwegian Press. My email is alejandro(at)decap.dk Decap (talk) 23:33, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looking to restart my writing for Wikinews, after an unintended lull. I'm an admin and acc reporter, I used to have general OTRS access about four years back. Requesting specifically to deal with a "history mystery" related article. nicholasmoreau@gmail.com -- Zanimum (talk) 17:12, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

 Doing...Juliancolton | Talk 17:24, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done Looks like i beat you to it by a minute, Julian. Check your email, Zanimum, i had the system send you a random password to your account. Cheers Tempodivalse [talk] 17:27, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! -- Zanimum (talk) 01:41, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have had my accreditation request closed and passed, would like to apply for membership on the wikinewsie site. My current email is julesmattsson+wn[at]googlemail.com. Thanks, --JulesMattsson (talk) 23:18, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done Tempodivalse [talk] 23:51, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I still haven't recieved a password by email, but wikinewsie does recognise my username. Could the email for me be changed to julesmattsson[at]googlemail.com, minus the +wn bit, as that may be causing problems. Thanks, --JulesMattsson (talk) 10:48, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it's possible for me to change the email, see below. Tempodivalse [talk] 15:27, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This has been resolved. Tempodivalse [talk] 21:58, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, people. Admin and accredited here on en.wn. Send to dodgestory(at)gmail(dot)com. Thanks! --Thunderhead 23:35, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done Tempodivalse [talk] 23:46, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, previous request was done I think, as my username is valid on Wikinewsie, but I have not received a password, and when I click 'Email Password', nothing is received (have checked spam filter). I think the email adress down for me as an alt. contact is wrong, it might be the '+wn' suffix on my gmail for emails from wikinews is causing the snafu, would it be possible to change my alt. email to julesmattsson[at]googlemail.com and resend a pass. Thanks, --JulesMattsson (talk) 11:57, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I was the one who created the account, I think I might have entered the wrong email address (although I thought I double checked). Unfortunately, now there's a problem: I don't know the password to the wikinewsie account (it didn't send it to me, only to the specified email address), so I can't log in and change the email address or password, so we're effectively locked out of the account, it seems. off the top of my head, there are two things we could do: create a different username and try emailing another password (but then you'll have separate usernames for wikinews and wikinewsie). Or, we could contact user:Brianmc, who has database access, and ask him to find the password and email it to you. Tempodivalse [talk] 15:27, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, I have database access. I've zero idea which table in a MediaWiki database the users are in. It may take quite some time to find and fix this problem. I've no idea how you actually request a generated password - the obvious thing is that should never be done. I've a few hardware issues to sort here (power went off running USB tests in Windows; don't see mouse or anything anymore). Need to get these computer issues sorted. --Brian McNeil / talk 15:53, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Uhm, right... Well thank you for your efforts, i'm not sure what to suggest to be honest. I don't overly mind different usernames, although would prefer not, so whatever is easiest really --JulesMattsson (talk) 17:33, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the inconvenience. I have an idea: I can create an account called "Jules Mattsson" for you at wikinewsie (the same as the one you have now, but with a space), but enter a password myself (instead of having the wikisystem do it), and email it directly to you. Is that okay? I think that's the best we can do for now, maybe once you get into your account we'll be able to rename it back to match your main WN account. Tempodivalse [talk] 17:48, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well potentially the following db query might do the trick:
UPDATE user SET user_email='email here' WHERE user_name='JulesMattsson';

but it might be easier to just do the renaming thing. Bawolff 03:46, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, creating a second account and doing a rename would probably be the easiest thing. The only problem is that Wikinewsie doesn't have the UserRename extention, we'd have to get Brian to install it. Tempodivalse [talk] 04:16, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
DoneOK, i installed RenameUser extension, renamed the user, created a new one. You should get an email soon. Tell me if it works. Bawolff 04:41, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, i haven't yet had an email either on my gmail or wikinewsie address with the details outlines above, which would it be sent to? Thanks for helping, sorry for all the bother. Jules (--82.198.231.199 (talk) 12:56, 5 January 2010 (UTC))[reply]
It should be your gmail one. Bawolff 12:58, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've created Jules_Mattsson. We can rename it if it works. Bawolff 01:14, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I got the email and am in as Jules_Mattsson, have changed the pass etc. Thanks. Would it be possible to rename to JulesMattsson? Thanks, --JulesMattsson (talk) 10:06, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Done (finally) Bawolff 12:02, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really want to know how to configure my email on WinLive Mail, and to know what does the wiki says :P
