Favorite Areas

[edit]

While this sounds kind of morbid, disasters are my favorite area(s) to write for.Bddpaux (talk) 01:25, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Slipping Into the Wings

[edit]

While I'm certainly not retiring, I think I'm going to slide into the background for a little while and re-think what I can/cannot bring to this project. I'll probably just proofread a little here and there and dawdle around the water cooler for awhile.Bddpaux (talk) 13:05, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Back from hiatus

Here we go again........

[edit]

I've got a' lot going on at work, so I'm going to be off-project for a while......will try to jump back in again in September.Bddpaux (talk) 03:59, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Welcome

Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

renaming a page

[edit]

{{helpme}}....so, my first article, and I misspell "Reverend"......how can I change the actual name of the article? Buddpaul (talk) 21:05, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

I could not do it in the "vector" appearance too. Try going to your user preferences, change appearance to classic, set quickbar to fixed left, go to your article which you want to rename, and find the "rename this page" link at the left. Is this explanation okay? --Q/0/k

In order to move a page in the "vector" skin, you have to go to the status bar (where it says "discussion", "edit", etc., and roll your mouse over the grey arrow pointing down. You should see a button called "Rename". Click it, and it will bring you to the standard move page dialogue. Please note, though, that your account has to be at least four days old (i.e. "autoconfirmed") to move pages. Hope this helps, Tempodivalse [talk] 13:55, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Seeing that you did not say just "how to rename a page", but gave the details, I moved the the page "Revered Dr. Bob Mayfield dies" to "Reverend Dr. Bob Mayfield dies". Q/0/k 03:12, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Welcome back!

[edit]

It seems that you just returned after a long time not editing. Welcome back! If you need any help or have questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Happy editing! red-thunder. 02:51, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Swap meet

[edit]

Hi! I moved the article under story preparation, to here, mostly so we're all aware that you're working on an event which has not yet occurred. Sounds like an interesting version of a flea market! make sure you bring a digital camera - there's sure to be great things to take shots of to illustrate the article. - Amgine | t 21:35, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Please, please,

[edit]

read the style guide! Your articles need to conform to the style rules, because copyediting takes time, and not all reviewers have the time to do a serious copyedit for you all the time. Ensuring that an article adheres to the guide often means faster reviews. fetch·comms 02:03, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Length?

[edit]

You commented that a recent article was too long. As far as I know, there is no maximum length at Wikinews, and, though I haven't counted the words, several featured articles appear to be the length of an in-depth newspaper article. --InfantGorilla (talk) 16:10, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Could you send any e-mail correspondence for this article to scoop@wikinewsie.org ?--William S. Saturn (talk) 07:19, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Vote for me!

[edit]

As you said to me, "reviewing is kinda slow". I agree that this problem needs fixing, so I am going to go to the source and apply for reviewing privileges! I have been on Wikinews since 2006 so you won't have a problem supporting me! Shii (talk) 00:20, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

  • At some point, it may be useful to you to look over the changes I made to the article during review. (Various items of interest, including some copyright problems.)
  • Btw, stats on the freshwater lakes article — August, September.

Tyler

[edit]
  • If we're going to have a category for this, it should be called "Tyler, Texas", since there are a number of places called Tyler.
  • We generally require at least three articles to justify a category. (Some people will name a slightly larger figure.) At any rate, a category with only one or two articles is ripe for WN:DR.
  • We don't generally have portals for things like relatively lesser cities; even if we can come up with three articles to justify the category, the portal would still be ripe for a deletion nom. (Actually, the whole portal space is rather controversial, and even its proponents generally agree the format of its pages is lousy right now.)

So first of all, can we come up with at least two articles from our archives about Tyler Texas?

If we can, would you agree amicably to renaming the category to "Tyler, Texas"? (Category renaming means deleting the old one, and with your explicit assent as author it can be speedily deleted, you see.)

It would likewise make things a lot simpler if you'd agree amicably to remove the portal. --Pi zero (talk) 05:10, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

I certainly would....and I think I got a bit too aggressive with the old "cut and paste" anyhoo!

....a category is perfectly fine. Not sure how to make all that happen, though.....can you help?Bddpaux (talk) 13:52, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

No problem, I can make it all happen readily enough with my super powers admin tools. Just give me a few minutes to eat my lunch/breakfast (time of day says lunch, but I just woke up), and I'll see to 't. :-)  --Pi zero (talk) 16:51, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
Category:Tyler, Texas.
Typical plan from here, I'd add this to my list of categories to be populated. Eventually (unknown time interval here), once the category has been populated, we'd create a mainspace redirect to the category, and instantly all the {{w|Tyler, Texas}} calls would link to the local category instead of to en.wp. --Pi zero (talk) 18:32, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Neat trick

[edit]

... that took me a long time to pick up on:  {{subst:aband}}  automatically inserts today's date, making it easier for admins later to know when the two-day warning is up. --Pi zero (talk) 22:52, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Hey, congratulations on your wildfire article

[edit]

It was quite well-written, and original reporting is, like, the best thing ever. So, good job! Have a cookie. DENDODGE 19:34, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Did you want this speedied? (Request of only contributor is grounds for speedy deletion.) --Pi zero (talk) 01:53, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Barnstar

The Original Barnstar
I, Pi zero, hereby award you this barnstar for your writing, persistence, enthusiasm, original reporting, and whatever else I should have mentioned but embarrassingly forgot. --Pi zero (talk) 20:26, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
