Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

July 2019

I am unsure what you are up to, but I moved your contribution to User:J-Man11/3rd Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles Formed. Whatever it is, it is not news and quite frankly beyond the scope of this project. Cheers, --SVTCobra 03:07, 21 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, earlier I renamed the article to be more in line with Wikinews:Headline. On Wikinews, things are done differently than on Wikipedia. Articles go through a peer review process before publication. When you first draft and article, we tag it as {{developing}}, then a reviewer examines the article for following Wikinews policies including newsworthiness and style. A useful introduction for new Wikinewsies already familiar with Wikipedia is at Wikinews:For Wikipedians. Please feel free to ask me any question, and welcome to Wikinews! Didn't know that, thank you for letting me know.. J-Man11 (talk) 01:55, 26 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

August 2019

[edit]

Hello again. I noticed your edits at User:J-Man11/sanbox1. I hope you realize this is Wikinews and not Wikipedia. Nothing on that page looks like anything that could be published on Wikinews. --SVTCobra 01:43, 24 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes thank you for that, I'm just using it as a sandbox im not going to add anything atm for Wikinews. I'm just using the sandbox space for it, as I prefer the "wiki style". J-Man11 (talk) 01:50, 24 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Also just notice I spelled sandbox wrong, just moved it back sorry about that.. J-Man11 (talk) 01:52, 24 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Can you explain what you are doing, please? Wikinews is not just some free hosting site just because you like "wiki style". --SVTCobra 01:52, 26 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yeah I'm aware, the reason why it is there is because I was told not to make anymore sandboxs on Wiki/Simple Wiki. I mean it is just a sandbox, but if it's annoying let me know and I'll move it out.. I just perfer the Wiki style of editing and look, rather than on Notepad++.. J-Man11 (talk) 01:57, 26 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@SVT is citoid available here? J-Man11 (talk) 17:17, 31 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
I don't know what that even is. --SVTCobra 17:18, 31 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
If you put in a url, it generates a Citation.. J-Man11 (talk) 18:01, 31 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
We don't use the footnote style of citation which is used on Wikipedia, so we likely don't have any of the tools for that. --SVTCobra 17:11, 1 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews

[edit]

Hi. I've noticed you've been creating and removing enormous volumes of material on your sandbox here. Although usually any wikimedia project will allow users to do some modest amount of stuff to do with another project "on the side" in their userspace, the volume you're doing is huge, is related to a project you're current banned from, and is apparently the only thing you're using Wikinews for. Our page WN:NOT mentions we are not a free wiki hose or webspace provider.

Do you intend to try to contribute to Wikinews? If not, perhaps we should after all take you up on your offer, above, to move your material elsewhere. (CC SVTCobra) --Pi zero (talk) 01:54, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

If I get rid of them and replace them, why would that be a problem? I'm not using millions of sandboxes and I'm not trying to create billions of articles.. J-Man11 (talk) 02:01, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
It uses project resources, though. The wiki database on the servers retains all the revisions of the page, permanently. --Pi zero (talk) 02:09, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Is there a way I can do this, but not both you with the revisions etc.? J-Man11 (talk) 02:41, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Not while using the public wiki. It's possible to run the wikimedia software on one's own machine, I believe, but that's a rather big undertaking. (Gryllida would know about that, I believe.) --Pi zero (talk) 02:46, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Oh that sounds interesting! Kind of like an offline editing? @Gryllida (t · c · b), any chance you could help out? J-Man11 (talk) 02:56, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

While you wait for Gryllida to respond, you can explore the download page. I am sure they have instructions and FAQs. --SVTCobra 21:45, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
It seems what you sent me is for a server? J-Man11 (talk) 22:09, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Well, I am no expert, but I suspect you don't have to put it online and can just run it locally. --SVTCobra 22:50, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
That's what I tried.. J-Man11 (talk) 23:14, 4 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps I would suggest to create the articles in libreoffice and copy/paste them into Wikipedia when they are ready: Visual Editor seems to support that. Gryllida (talk) 01:20, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thought I would drop this list here, as the articles which you are making in the sandbox seem to be more Wikipedia related. Please see below:

--Gryllida (talk) 22:50, 4 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Well I'm aware of that thanks, but I was looking for another project which has Visual Editor AND the citoid, I can deal without it, but I prefer it more. J-Man11 (talk) 01:33, 5 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
