DRC-B5 is taking a short wikibreak and will be back on Wikinews before April 16.

Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Award[edit]

The Order of the Humble Pencil

For completing 5 edits.

This is very overdue! You've come a long way in the couple weeks that you've been here. Hopefully soon you'll get an article published!

Heavy Water (talk) 17:04, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this. Wish you for your future! DRC-B5 (talk) 17:06, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, you should sign up for the writing contest we're holding, I think it'll be fun. Heavy Water (talk) 18:48, 29 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Heavy Water: thanks for inviting but I'm currently in wikibreak. I might get rare time to access specially on first week of February onward. But don't worry I will sign up soon. DRC-B5 (talk) 03:54, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That would actually work out fine, because the contest doesn't start until February 1. Heavy Water (talk) 04:38, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you have a new message at the talk page of the article, please check. Gryllida (talk) 20:33, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

{{aband}}[edit]

When tagging an article as abandoned, using the {{abandoned}} template does not provide the date, leaving unclear when the article is supposed to be deleted. Using {{subst:aband}} solves this problem. Thanks, --Heavy Water (talk) 16:19, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thnx @Heavy Water. DRC-B5 (talk) 16:55, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Awards[edit]

The Order of the Modest Pencil

For getting your first article published!

Congratulations, your persistence paid off with this!
For your tenacity through your first five articles of yours, all of which expired or were deleted, to your first published one, I present you with the Exceptional Newcomer Award.

You can also use File:Wikinews WikiNoob.png on your user page to indicate your article count if you wish. Heavy Water (talk) 00:53, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would thank to all users involved in this article processing.. Because they fixed the issues and it becomes a success. More over it was my idea of bringing it to Wikinews first but later delete it. Thanks to all.. DRC-B5 (talk) 02:29, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Chaetodipus also copyedited it, yes, but I'd say you contributed more than anyone else to those articles, so thank you. Heavy Water (talk) 02:40, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Heavy Water for the motivation and now I can have my studies happily. DRC-B5 (talk) 03:07, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure about this request? If yes, I will delete because you are the only one who worked on it so far. I only glanced at it, but it looked interesting. SVTCobra 17:54, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See @SVTCobra, I can't deny that it is newsworthy but I feel this would need more improvement which I can not have time to spend on it l. Still if so then I withdraw the request. DRC-B5 (talk) 17:57, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if it needs improvement, but I recommend leaving it as is if you don't have time. Maybe it gets published, maybe it does not. My feeling is there's no reason to speedy. Cheers, SVTCobra 18:19, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for editing, appreciated. This is an interesting story. Gryllida (talk) 01:18, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I was about to prepare the article but someone did already the job. Anyways I modified it, and others helped too. DRC-B5 (talk) 01:43, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please see comments I left about the article at Talk:President Biden chooses an Indian-American executive to lead World Bank. —chaetodipus (talk · contribs) 08:56, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects[edit]

When creating categories, please also create a mainspace redirect like Imran Khan so the category can be linked to within articles. Thanks, Heavy Water (talk) 22:01, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot about that, sorry. Is this applicable for all categories related to person, place or subject which is most familiar with. M:DRC (talk) 03:33, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Also common variations on spelling should be used for redirects. This is especially important for topics/subjects where the name is not in English and/or the Latin alphabet. SVTCobra 03:40, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Understood, thanks. M:DRC (talk) 04:04, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Abandoned[edit]

I am sorry you are having to abandon so many (and quite long) articles. The review process has long been our bottleneck. I know you have asked me to review more, but there are just too many administrative tasks which I am almost the only one who can perform. I know it must be frustrating. I appreciate all the work you are doing. I really hope you don't get discouraged. Cheers, SVTCobra 04:34, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's ok @SVTCobra. I understand that the reviewing process is too slow here. A person can't just review for 24 hours. We are also too involved in our personal lives. So, thinking on this situation, I'm focusing on one article now. That would help me to improve just one and not diverting into two. M:DRC (talk) 06:15, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if we should say we are "too involved in our personal lives" ... I probably should be more involved in my personal life instead of letting wiki take so much of my time. But that just might be me. Cheers, SVTCobra 06:35, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
