Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome, Habstinat! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Welcome!

Thanks for contributing! BigKrow (talk) 02:17, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@BigKrow, thank you! I look forward to contributing more to Wikinews going forwards.
I was actually hoping to have 2024 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships Day 1 (title pending) reviewed this Friday evening (ET) as soon as it is complete, as I was planning on making a separate "day 2" story to cover the last day of the championships on Saturday, similar to this example. I asked about this on IRC last night but didn't get a response. Would this be possible, or would you be available to review it then? --Habst (talk) 11:12, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Try and ask @Heavy Water or @SVTCobra, thanks. BigKrow (talk) 14:43, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@BigKrow, thanks, I put a message on both of their talk pages here and here. --Habst (talk) 15:55, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Another option might be {{quick review}}. I've never used it myself. Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 18:01, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Michael.C.Wright, thanks, I tried using it on my article here: Three world records surprisingly set at the 2024 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships. In the future, I'm open to becoming a reviewer to assist with the Category:Review backlog if that would be helpful. --Habst (talk) 13:25, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think that's a great goal! The project needs more editors and reviewers. Fingers crossed for the review of your article. You can tell a lot of work was put into it. Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Published) 15:04, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Is a reviewer it says on User page. 64.39.81.54 (talk) 19:44, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@BigKrow, thank you for letting me know, when I had last checked it was before Feb 19th so I didn't catch their recent activity. I posted a message on their talk page here. --Habst (talk) 19:57, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Freshness

[edit]

Do you think Heavy Water or SVTCobra will get your article published? Thanks. BigKrow (talk) 23:30, 28 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@BigKrow, I have no way of knowing. I greatly respect their volume of work here and understand they are busy. --Habst (talk) 23:33, 28 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ok BigKrow (talk) 00:01, 29 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reviews

[edit]

I know it is frustrating and I received your email. Currently, I cannot promise to perform any reviews myself. I just don't have the time. I apologize. SVTCobra 04:40, 8 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@SVTCobra, thank you anyways for your response. I hope that another reviewer will be able to get to it before it gets deleted. --Habst (talk) 14:45, 8 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm trying to step back in a bit around here..... at least for a while.--Bddpaux (talk) 21:53, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry your track article didn't get published, after so much work on your part! Don't run away!! Are you familiar with 'gatwicking'?--Bddpaux (talk) 18:56, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux, thank you for stepping in and sorry for my late response. I did learn about Gatwicking while I was writing the article and I did that twice, the original title of my first article was "Three world records set at the 2024 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships" and you can see at Special:Diff/4770176 the article looked quite different then compared to after I gatwicked it first to the announcement of the team, and then to the World Indoor Championships a few weeks later. I probably could have Gatwicked it a third time to the 2024 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships which I took pictures at, but I wasn't confident that I could get a review and I regretfully let the stale deadline pass since that event as well. As the indoor track and field "season" is over now, I can't think of any way to resurrect my first article again until next year.
But, I'm very grateful to see you return. So I'll commit to writing another article. The good news is I would feel comfortable writing about most of the events here or here. Ultimately I'd love to build up to provide robust coverage of the 2024 Olympics this summer. I'll see what's going on this weekend and I'll ping you when something is ready, thank you. --Habst (talk) 19:33, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, if you want to grab anything from it (to throw into a Sandbox), you might do that soon. I intend to delete it very soon.--Bddpaux (talk) 18:29, 27 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux, thank you for the heads up. Can you move it to my userspace, at User:Habst/World Athletics Indoor Championships concludes in Glasgow with new world records and significant wins? --Habst (talk) 18:37, 27 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Done. Essentially:Sandbox'd --Bddpaux (talk) 18:42, 27 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you want to preserve, in your userspace, the talk page as well? FYI, you can perform a move like that yourself, since you're autoconfirmed. Heavy Water (talk) 20:47, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Heavy Water, thank you for the suggestion. OK, I moved it to my userspace, though it did automatically create a redirect which I also templated for deletion. --Habst (talk) 22:41, 29 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reviewer

[edit]

So, amidst all the chatter: Have you considered becoming a Reviewer yourself?--Bddpaux (talk) 19:26, 22 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Bddpaux, thanks, I did see the water cooler message but haven't really digested it yet to opine. I do want to become a reviewer, but I think it is only fair for me to publish at least one Wikinews article first to make sure I understand the proper style. (I've written hundreds of articles on Wikipedia if it's any consolation).
I was planning on writing about the Diamond League's move back to China this weekend after the Shanghai Diamond League takes place on Saturday. After that or some other article by me gets published I would feel more comfortable making such a request. --Habst (talk) 19:33, 22 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I fully agree. However: Do not devalue the importance of little corrections to articles that are holding in the Newsroom. I did LOADS OF THAT in my earliest days here. 'To write is inspired. To edit is divine.'--Bddpaux (talk) 19:40, 22 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also: Have you applied to be an Accredited Reporter here yet?--Bddpaux (talk) 19:41, 22 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux thank you, your advice is well received. I can't think of a particular near term need for accreditation, but I think I will probably apply for that once it would be helpful. --Habst (talk) 19:47, 22 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Indeed.....once you've learned a number of the buttons and switches around here, it is an excellent 'first step'.--Bddpaux (talk) 19:49, 22 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
