Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Introducing myself
[edit]I am an administrator on Wikipedia. I have been reverting inappropriate edits and vandalism from articles that does not need all this disruptive editing from users. I have done over 10,000 edits and I have won so many awards; including barn stars for my endlessly tiring hard work cleaning up user's messes from pages that have been vandalized. I'll will do the same here and keep up the GOOD HARD work! HackerGeek (talk) 10:26, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, hmm... very interesting but you’re not an administrator anywhere are you? Do you want to be honest and just admit that you copied this from User:Widr's Wikipedia page? Are you one of those blocked users, looking for an outlet to vent your frustration at @Widr:? Green Giant (talk) 10:32, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Hello. About this article, you need to write them in your own words from multiple sources. Copying BBC's article is not acceptable. It is not even acceptable as a starting point. Cheers, --SVTCobra 10:38, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks a lot, this was relevant, interesting, and on time at the time of submitting it. Also thanks for writing it in your own words. Unfortunately I did not have a chance to look at it this week, some volunteers complete stories like this by expanding them but it depends on the volunteer availability which is not always ideal. This is why it is useful for you to address the review concerns as soon as you receive them, immediately (assistance may be provided to beginners, but they need to be asking questions for this to happen, and abandoning stories just does not work and instead leads to them not being published).
Tips:
- Wikinews articles are at least three paragraphs long.
- The first paragraph answers the 5Ws: who, where, what, why, how, when.
- Follow up comments immediately to help the article published while it is still fresh.
(The story is marked as abandoned and may be removed in 2 days (or moved to user space if requested)).
