Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Write your first article for Wikinews!
Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it!

Human Rights Watch: concern for exploited children in Senegal remains
[edit]With deep regret, I have to say, this one seems to have gotten away from us. Unless there's something you can do to freshen it, of course, but I'm not sure how that would happen, here. See my review comments, and detailed history of edits during review.

Hi there!
Thanks for your article! Unfortunately, it's not ready to be published. I've left some comments on the talk page, but I thought I'd also give you some tips:
- Articles on Wikinews need to be at least three paragraphs in length.
- The page also needs some categories. These can be added to a page by adding [[Category:Australia]], for example. You can also use "HotCat", which adds a easy interface for adding categories. You can enable it in your preferences. Generally, we try to add, at a minimum, a category for "where" (e.g. Australia), and "who" (e.g. Category:Westboro Baptist Church). We also add at least one top-level category from the list at Category:News_articles_by_section.
- The headline is too vague — you can see our guidelines here. A good headline tells you who, what, and where the news headline happened -- so maybe "Westboro Baptist Church no show at Australian high school play" would be better. You can rename articles using the drop-down next to the edit button; this might not work if your account is too young (if I recall correctly, four days). If this is the case, just drop someone a note and they'll move it for you. Microchip08 (talk) 07:04, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
I've marked this article not ready on the grounds of it being effectively {{single source}}, as both sources share an author. Thinking about this, it seems a great chance to grab some original reporting. The school has contact details here, both general and specicifcally for the principal. Westboro take media requests via an email listed here.
I'm not sure exactly how your Wikinews articles tie in with your course grades, but I suspect Crtew (talk · contribs) would be very pleased to see some OR done on your own initiative. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 20:37, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

I'm on it. I've got a short statement from the principle confirming that the photograph tweeted by WBC is a student and was part of the performance. He also confirmed Westboro did not attend the school production at all. I'm also trying to get in touch with WBC by email. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kad388UOW (talk • contribs)
- Cool! For an example of how I tend to deal with this kind of OR (getting statements), see here. Basically, I cut out the email headers and supply the full body of the messages on talk, and forward to scoop as well [scoop AT wikinewsie DOT org]. Thank you! I emailed WBC last night, I didn't get a response but the tweets from last week appear to have been removed since last night - I have been trawling back and forth on their twitter feed looking for them - and they had tweeted that they would picket the school tomorrow. So I emailed again with further questions about why they would picket the school on a Saturday and if they were aware that according to the school's calendar, the performance was a one-off as well as a question about the photograph they had tweeted on the 2nd, but although it looks like I have had an effect on them, I haven't received any response to my questions. - If they still haven't replied they probably won't ever. I'd say the material you have is good enough. The OR statement from the principal is sufficient corroborative evidence for sourcing and lets us get a quote in, and the additional observation that stuff has vanished from the WBC Twitter is a nice exclusive touch to add too. I am a journalism student from the University of Wollongong, and I have recently published an article on wikinews about Westboro's threats to picket your school's performance of the Laramie Project. I am preparing a second article to report on their failure to appear and wanted to give you the opportunity to comment on the lack of follow through.
Also, could you please confirm for me that the attached image is a student performing and not a WBC member? The image was tweeted by the group with text to the effect of 'westboro pickets Margaret River High School'.
I am also contacting WBC for comment and would greatly appreciate your input.

I can confirm that this is an image from the play and not a protest by the WBC. The WBC did not attend the school at anytime during the Play production

Hopefully, if someone else doesn't review the article sooner, I may be able to review it in the morning (which probably means after you go to bed tonight; the timezone difference between here and Australia is brutal). In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikinews pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four w:tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the w:Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. An article you contributed to, Car stackers could solve Sydney's parking problem, has not yet been published, but has not been edited for a significant period of time. Please consider taking another look at it, and trying to fix the problems the reviewer raised. You can then submit it for re-review, and hopefully it will be published.
