Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Re: IRC
[edit]Hi,
- Have you come to IRC? Someone with a resembling nickname did... (If it was you, please leave it open for several hours.)
- Which page would you like to keep, Hospital targeted in northern Syria or Hospitals targeted in Syria's North?
--Gryllida 05:26, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi,
- I would like to keep Hospital targeted in northern Syria thank you.
Nicholas Preddey Nicholas Preddey (talk) 06:13, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for confirming. I have deleted the redundant page.
- (On a related note please do not edit the line which looks like this:
- {{date|June 1, 2016}}
- It is a template and it shows the correct date automatically.)
- Thank you, --Gryllida 06:44, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Ok no worries- Have I done the sources correctly? Nicholas Preddey (talk) 07:07, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, you'll see I've done a few tweaks on your sourcing. You've got the {{source}} template pretty much spot-on now. But, we don't use Wikipedia-style referencing; the thinking behind that is people see the [1] link to a footnote, and with two clicks they're off reading someone else's version of the story.
- Leaving HTML comments in the article body, to highlight which source a detail/fact/quote comes from, can be extremely useful for a reviewer.
- Last key point on sourcing is a bit of not-so-good news; policy is against using subscription/paywalled sources. It's fairly important that readers can verify a Wikinews article tallies with sources. If those sources require payment — or giving up personal information — to gain access, their use is very strongly discouraged. Only one of those I've seen so-far is Wall Street Journal. Was pleasantly surprised to get at an NYT article without excessive mucking about.
- If you've not already figured it out, the {{w}} template can take a second parameter for the text displayed. The first parameter is processed to link locally, where there is an appropriate category (eg Syria); or, to fall back to linking over to Wikipedia for where we lack a category (eg Strunk & White). --Brian McNeil / talk 10:09, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- Please do not put links like this. Refer to what Brian McNeil said above. (How do I do wikilinks?, How do I cite external sources?).
- I can see the process is not easy to get right on the first go; I keep correcting these things to make the review process easier.
- Thankfully we have access to wiki markup of the existing published articles. A good set of examples, that is. --Gryllida 07:09, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
UoW?
[edit]Are you a UoW student? (I ask because if you are we should add a {{UoW student}} template to your user page. --Pi zero (talk) 11:31, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi. I'm optimistic about this (knock wood), but there's a focus difficulty I didn't feel I could clear up myself as independent reviewer. See my review comments. Also of interest (as always), detailed history of edits. --Pi zero (talk) 18:49, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
I guys- thank you for the tips. Have i improved the story at all about the 175 million grant? Here is the Link https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Africa's_refugee_crisis_to_recieve_$175_million_from_World_BankI might be still confused with the sourcing but tried to answer all the gaps in the article. Im working on the Syrian hospital and Dadaab closing one nowNicholas Preddey (talk) 04:19, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hi. The Dadaab article hasn't worked out as I'd hoped. Review comments. --Pi zero (talk) 04:42, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
