Ireland rejects EU Treaty
[edit]June 13, 2008
Description The referendum in Ireland on the so-called Treaty of Lisbon failed on Friday with 53% voting "no". Ireland is the only country to vote "no" on the treaty, which is required to have unanimous support from all 27 European Union members.
Full story: Ireland, the only country to hold a referendum, voted to reject the European Union treaty, which would have strengthened the EU government. The treaty has already been ratified by the parliaments of 18 other countries. The UK, the next country scheduled to ratify, says it will push ahead with the process there, but conservatives in that country say it should be "declared dead." It's unclear what this defeat means for the treaty, which can only go into effect after ratification by all 27 EU member states.

Crystal cave in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks (CA) Evacuated After Historic Explosives Found
[edit]May 20, 2008
Description:
Crystal Cave was evacuated after park employees found what is believed to be live explosives left over from cave construction in the 1930s.
Full story:
The workers were performing an annual cave restoration wires were found leading from three drilled holes in the rock. They appeared to be remnants of live explosives which may have been left over from construction work done in the 1930s. The chief regional blaster was contacted. He works at the park and is certified by the National Park Service to handle abandoned explosives. An effort will be made this week to remove any explosives. The explosives may be nitro glycerine and because of its instability, detonation may be required for removal.

McClelland bombshell book
[edit]May 28, 2008
Description: Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan releases scathing memoir
Full story: What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception is the memoir of Scott McClellan, who served as the White House Press Secretary from 2003 until 2006 under President George W. Bush. The book is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2008; however, excerpts have already been leaked. In the book, McClellan unexpectedly and harshly criticizes the Bush administration. He accuses Bush of "self-deception"[1] and of maintaining a "permanent campaign approach" to governing rather than making the best choices.[2] McClellan stops short of saying that Bush purposely lied about his reasons for invading Iraq, writing that the administration was not "employing out-and-out deception" to make the case for war in 2002,[3] though he does write that the administration relied on an aggressive "political propaganda campaign" instead of the truth to sell the Iraq war.[4] The book is also critical of the press corps for being too accepting of the administration's propaganda on the Iraq War[2] and of Condoleeza Rice for being "too accommodating" and being very careful about protecting her own reputation.[1]

State of Florida agrees to purchase U.S. Sugar to restore the Everglades
[edit]June 24, 2008
Description:The State of Florida agreed to purchase U.S. Sugar, the largest manufacturer of cane sugar in the U.S., for $1.7 billion, in an effort to restore the Everglades
Full story:The State of Florida entered an agreement on June 24, 2008 to purchase U.S. Sugar, the largest manufacturer of cane sugar in the U.S. in an effort to restore the Everglades. Terms of the agreement stated that the purchase would be completed within 75 days, but that U.S. Sugar would be able to operate for another six years. After that, the State of Florida will retain ownership of U.S. Sugar's manufacturing facilities in Clewiston, Florida, and 187,000 acres of fields that have grown sugarcane since the 1960s would be allowed to return to their natural state.
U.S. Sugar and the State of Florida have been in legal disputes since the Everglades Forever Act was passed in 1994. The act was an attempt to clean up water tainted with phosphorus runoff leaving sugarcane fields and pumped into the Everglades. Phosphorus is a fertilizer that alters Everglades ecosystems, allowing invasive and exotic cattails to replace sawgrass when levels rise above 50 parts per billion. Tests in the 1980s in the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge directly south of sugarcane fields indicated water had 500 ppb of phosphorus.

First Australian plaque to commemorate Pontian genocide victims
[edit]Saturday, 28 February 2009, 5.40PM ADST
Description:First memorial plaque in Australia to recognise the Pontian genocide.
Full story:On Saturday 20 December 2008 the first ever memorial plaque dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Pontian Genocide was erected at the South Australian Migration Museum. The plaque was unveiled by the State Attorney General, Hon Michael Atkinson MP who is also the Minister for Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs in South Australia. The event was organised by the Pontian Brotherhood of South Australia Inc, as part of their 50th Anniversary celebrations for the club. The event was also attended by the Lieutenant-Governor Mr Hieu van Le, Chairman of the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission in South Australia, Mr Steve Georganas, Federal Member for Hindmarsh, Hon Stephen Wade MLC, Mr Dimitri Hatzopoulos, Consul-General of Greece in South Australia, and Father Tsoraklidis for the Greek Orthodox Church of South Australia. The President and Secretary of the Armenian Cultural Association of South Australia also attended. This is the first such plaque anywhere in Australia and it is a first step towards achieving recognition of the events in Australia.
Sources: I am a member of the club and wife of the president who commissioned the plaque. The story was detailed in a number of Greek newspapers in south Australia and Victoria, such as the Neos Kosmos, Ta Nea and others. Too much time has passed since and I can't find the archive news for these papers. I thought you might have beeter luck.
I also have a photo available of the plaque but I am not sure whether that is something that would be appropriate for this site.

Several news station in my country picked up my article and think my campaign is newsworthy. Therefore I would want this to become a full story on Wikinews. Because it is news worthy, it is a creative daring campaign without any commercial goal and of course it is remarkable. So it is something people will talk about. It is of course up to the editors to decide if this is remarkable thus news. I myself can of course not submit this article since this would be against the holy guidelines of Wikipedia :) Which I think are very important

Why was the title of HR 676 changed from insurance to care?
[edit]July 17, 2009
Description: HR 676 was first introduced in 2003 as the United States National Health Insurance Act, and re-introduced each session until 2009, when it was quietly changed to the United States National Health Care Act. I would suggest that someone call Conyers office and ask why the change was made. It should be noted that a Wikipedia editor, upon reading the bill, noted that the bill provided care, not insurance, and changed the article on the bill in April of 2008. The question is, did Conyers office or someone else also read the bill and change the title, or did they read the Wikipedia article and change the title based on the Wikipedia article? Full story:

Anglo-Saxon gold hoard found in England
[edit]- REDIRECT Template:New page
A major discovery of Anglo-Saxon treasure has been discovered buried beneath a field in Staffordshire, England. The collection of 1,500 gold and silver pieces, which may date back to the 7th Century, is unparalleled in size - far larger than the Sutton Hoo discovery of 1939. It has been declared treasure trove, meaning it belongs to the Crown. It was discovered by metal detectorist Terry Herbert on farmland.

Atlantis Rolls Out, The STS-132 Crew Get A Rare Treat
[edit]- REDIRECT Template:New page
Just a few days after the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-131) made a flawless landing at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Monday,
Atlantis made it’s “slow crawl” to launch pad 39a today. The STS-132 crew that will fly the spacecraft were also there to pose for a few photos as the mammoth shuttle made its way behind them.
It isn’t everyday that a crew for a mission gets to see the shuttle roll out. In fact it was because of poor weather that the crawler was delayed. Commander Ken Ham had a treat as well “Riding the crawler last night was absolutely fantastic," Ham said The crawler is in fact powered by destroyer engines and he felt it reminded him of being on a Navy ship and added "It is incredible to see that battleship on the ground."
The TCDT : Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test is basically a “full-up” simulation of launch day. Although it’s not new information, Pilot Tony Antonelli indicated “…we are getting a refresher”. According to NASA, Mission Specialist Michael Good, call sign “ Bueno” said the TCDT is a sobering reminder that “ It brings it home that, hey, you’re going to space in a couple of weeks”
The STS-132 crew will return to JSC ( Johnson Space Center ) in Houston following the “dress rehearsal” Saturday . Space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to launch May 14th at 2:19PM EDT.
STS-132 will be one of three remaining space shuttle missions.

NASA's Sun Studying SDO Boldly Goes, & Shows Stunning First Views
[edit]- REDIRECT Template:New page
On February 11th 2010, Nasa launched The Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO. There was much anticipation that SDO would be the highest resolution image capturing device and most advanced tool ever launched to study the Sun. The early images that SDO are sending back to earth prove an unprecedented capability.
Images returned by SDO, are 10 times better than that of HDTV. SDO is also transmitting more comprehensive data "faster than any other solar observing spacecraft" as reported by NASA. Earth bound computers are sending data all the time and some large file transfers in the Giga Bytes, but are you sending 1.5 Terra bytes a day? SDO is doing exactly that. That's a large amount of data, but what about the content? NASA reports: "These initial images show a dynamic sun that I had never seen in more than 40 years of solar research,” said Richard Fisher, director of the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. He compared the impact that SDO will have on our lives and science to be similar to the way the Hubble Telescope made on modern astrophysics.
The "never-before-seen" detail , shows material that is emerging from sunspots streaming away. Extreme detail of the Sun's surface are also being studied. NASA received it's first high resolution detail images of solar flares in a extreme ultraviolet wavelengths and false color images to better study the suns behavior. These sun spots have been known to knock out communication satellites in orbit around earth which means " more accurate solar storm warnings" - Sen. Barbara Mikulski.
NASA's SDO, is the first of it's kind. The LWS " Living With A Star" program . The LWS goal is to study the sun and space relations with earth, and those aspects that affect our "lives and society". The Sun changes all the time. It has a powerful affect on the earth. When the sun fluctuates it's emissions, the Earth's upper atmosphere will puff up, heat, and break apart atoms and molecules. SDO has a set of instruments designed specifically to measure the fluctuations called " The Extreme Ultraviolet Experiment". Tom Woods is the principal investigator. He's part of the team at the LASP ( Laboratory of Atmospheric and Space Physics) at The University of Colorado, Boulder which built the very high resolution instrument.
With a very sensitive narrow band wavelength imager, the " Helioseismic & Magnetic Imager" will map out and look beneath the sun's surface. The solar magnetic fields will resolve through ultrasound images. The active regions will make it "similar to watching sand shift in a desert dune". Stanford University and Lockheed Martin built the HMI. Phil Scherrer of Stanford is the principal investigator. Also aboard the SDO is the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly : 4 telescopes that will " photograph the suns surface and atmosphere" with 10 different wavelength bands to capture, the never-before-seen detail will be the responsibility of Alan Title to discover. He is the principal based at Lockheed Martin Solar & Astrophysics, "which built the instrument".
" These amazing images, which show our dynamic sun in a new level of detail, are only the beginning of SDO's contribution to our understanding of the sun" ( SDO Project Scientist Dean Pesnell of Goddard)

ROCKET RACING: Nascar Meets Star Wars
[edit]- REDIRECT Template:New page
Until now, it's been science fiction. Pod Racing in Star Wars for example. Thanks to the Rocket Racing League, it's now a reality. Like NASCAR or F1 racing in the sky. In Rocket Racing, "top gun" pilots race each other 20 feet apart in delta winged X-Racers. These craft are small, fly up to 250mph, and unlike Jet engines that burn oxygen from the air in the atmosphere, these carry their own oxidizer in the form of Liquid Oxygen or LOX. They combine this LOX with ethanol. The result? thrust that exceeds 2,500lbs and emitting a 15-foot long flame. Of course, a race would not be complete without a loud whine of an engine , the X-racers roar can be heard for miles and miles. The way these X-Racers race, is by an " imaginary raceway in the sky". The pilots have a 3-D helmut system that projects the raceway in front of them, it's sent up by ground-link and folks at home can enjoy the thrill first hand with their PC's by watching in real time as they race as well. The X-Racers will have a camera that sends the feed to the ground.

Barack Obama "Road to the WHite House" documentary film by Keith O'Derek
[edit]Barack Obama 'Road to the White House'
On November 5th, 2008, Barack Obama became the first African American President of the United States, but the journey began months before he announced his intent to run for the nation's highest political office.
The story started when a little known Senator from the State of Illinois came to speak at the California African American Museum, which was hosting an Urban Issues Forum back on Oct. 27, 2006. The gifted orator spoke with such elegance and grace that there was a sense that Sen. Barack Obama was destined for greater things.
The film Barack Obama ´Road to the White House¡ chronicles the two-and-a-half-year period between that fateful day back in October 2006 to that historic day on January 20th 2009, when the entire world witnessed an unprecedented feat, the inauguration of our country's 44th president, the first of African descent and one of only three sitting U.S. presidents to be awarded a a Nobel Peace Prize. The documentary film follows Obama's journey from his time in California to his swearing-in ceremony on the steps of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C.
Independent filmmaker Keith O'Derek spent three and a half days driving from Los Angeles, California to Washington D.C. to attend the ceremony. During his journey, he slept in his SUV and in bus stations, filming and interviewing average people from all walks of life on what they thought about the incoming President.
In addition to some of the people who knew him personally, the documentary features in-depth interviews with high-profile politicians, celebrities and businessmen from around the Country who weigh in about the new President, as well as issues about race and the economy among other things. Never before has the nation and the world been so intrigued by such an influential leader. Whether one agrees or disagrees with his politics, he has indeed fostered change just by his mere presence in the White House.
´Road to the White House¡ is the first movie of kind to be told by the candor and honesty of the American people and what they think about their elected leader. In addition, Academy Award-winning actor and humanitarian Louis Gossett Jr. lends his prolific voice and support to the film by providing voice-over to the theatrical trailer that is coming soon. He is also among the featured high-powered celebrities to offer insight as to how Obama is performing as the Head of State. He also reflects upon the America?s history of racial injustice and its progress.
The consensus of President Barack Obama is that he brings hope to so many who have so little. ´Road to the White House¡ is not told with any political slant or ideology, but with the straightforwardness of so many who have grown frustrated with the partisan politics in Washington D.C. over the course of the last eight years. It's not about the Republican or the Democratic point of view, it's about the American point of view, and it was done out of a labor of love, sweat and tears.
