broke my article[edit]

Takes forever to load after adding the map.

Hi Heavy Water, thank you. Now I have moved the map source code (a few hundreds lines because it includes route points) to Template:Official_vehicle_with_diagnostic_camera_finds_radioactive_caesium-137_capsule_in_Western_Australia,_lost_from_truck_three_weeks_ago/map and transcluded it, this is a bit ugly but it allows me to keep editing the draft at least. If there is a cleaner solution that does not involve re-pasting these route coordinates into the article, where it will become broken for everyone with JS enabled I think (visual editor or not - they both just get stuck for me), please, let me know. It must have something to do with the edit adding over half a million characters to the article. It is rare to see something that big. Are all of those coordinates in the sources? Cheers, SVTCobra 03:17, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, it is a route generated by FacilMap. The source point is relatively clear, it is the ore mine. The destination is less clear, I just put middle of Perth. Perhaps it could be trimmed to include only a hundred points (FacilMap does not have such option, would need to be done manually). Gryllida (talk) 03:48, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thumb[edit]

Does anyone know why using the "thumb" parameter in images has started putting frames on them (e.g., here)? It must be a MediaWiki update, which is unfortunate. Heavy Water (talk) 00:30, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

By frames, I mean the edges. The pictures in here use thumb and they don't have frames. This just started the other day; the picture here uses thumb and has frames. I think the "thumb" parameter always did that. I can see it is pretty ugly in the earthquake article, but I don't think it is something new. The Pele article you cite seems to have borders (frames) as well, they are just better suited to the image, I suppose. SVTCobra 05:57, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I do in fact know this! I was under the impression I was removed from the autoconfirmed, and besides, I am generally opposed to people not actively involved in a project having or using privileges. Editing news 2023 #1[edit]

This newsletter includes two key updates about the Editing team's work:

  1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
  2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

Talk pages project

Screenshot showing the talk page design changes that are currently available as beta features at all Wikimedia wikis. These features include information about the number of people and comments within each discussion.
Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.
