Talk:French inventor Franky Zapata successfully crosses English Channel on jet-powered hoverboard
Add topicFlyboard Air
[edit]@Gryllida: I don't know what that is. --Pi zero (talk) 03:04, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- I've expanded it a bit, and wanted to add ", being the first time a human was able to fly in the air using a device powered by turbines alone,", but REALLY could not find a source for that, and do not know where to look. Gryllida (talk) 07:20, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- (For me it was the first time I saw a man fly without a helicopter or an airplane, autonomously, but the Wikipedia article about this device does not say this.. Maybe the patent data needs to be checked. . .) Gryllida (talk) 07:26, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Gryllida: It occurs to me to point out, "Flyboard Air" is a brand name. It probably shouldn't appear in the headline at all — kind of advertising-ish. I'm thinking that downplaying the brand name should also help with neutrality. --Pi zero (talk) 12:54, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for modifying the headline, I think it looks better now. Would it also make sense to get rid of the "French inventor" and "successfully"?

- Well... "French inventor" is a more accessible explanation of who this person is than "Franky Zapata"; if we were going to keep only part of the identification, it'd likely make more sense to drop the name: "French inventor successfully crosses ...". As for dropping "successfully", I'll have to think about that a bit. It's an allusion, iirc, to this being the second attempt, but even if I'm remembering that right, it's not mentioned in the article. --Pi zero (talk) 23:31, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- I just added a source that explicitly states that this is a second attempt, with neato details to boot. Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:39, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Darkfrog24: Thanks for the second-attempt details. --Pi zero (talk) 01:05, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

Do we know what exactly Zapata is riding in the file photo? I'm really curious and it would be good for the caption. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 01:00, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- It's from here Gryllida (talk) 02:24, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- It is the original Flyboard which is propelled by jets of water (sucked up by the hose) and it is unlike the Flyboard Air uses jets of air. It should probably be pointed out in the caption. Cheers, --SVTCobra 02:36, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, this is correct. I've added it into the article: into the image caption and also in an additional paragraph at the end. Gryllida (talk) 03:05, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

@Gryllida: Checking the sources, it seems like the Flyboard Air been in development for the three years instead of having been invented three years ago. It would be good to note who said it would be useful for logistics and military purposes namely the French defense minister. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 07:18, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
Image seems to have been nicked off the internet. It (the original) has been nominated for deletion on Commons. --SVTCobra 09:22, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- I found a new image off Flickr, File:The Flyboard.jpg, though I'm not sure if that's actually Franky Zapata. There's also this Flickr photo but it's CC-BY-NC-ND. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 17:02, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- File:The Flyboard.jpg is probably not him as it has turned into something of a sport. But the Flickr photo looks like a good candidate for fair-use local upload, imho, as long as we stress the NC-ND aspect, and it is the real deal, not the predecessor. But I may view fair-use more liberally than other people. Cheers, --SVTCobra 17:12, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- While personally I think we should be okay with allowing noncommercial images (there's no money-making going on anyway), I'm pretty sure site policy just simply doesn't allow for that, nor does WMF's non-free use policy. It could be possible to contact the Spanish photographer who took the currently up-for-deletion photo, or even the Flickr photographer, but there's only so much time. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 17:29, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- Haven't been following details here. The big restriction on Fair Use at en.wn is that the copyright holder mustn't be a news org, I think? --Pi zero (talk) 17:33, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)Kico Moncada Carrasco is probably not going to be to keen to send an e-mail to OTRS after learning that his photo was stolen and hosted on Commons for five years, plus OTRS has a backlog of a few months. The Flickr photo is a candidate for fair use. We don't take other news orgs photos because it potentially usurps part of the market for their product. Wikipedia refuses to accept fair-use images of living people, but that is not a restriction in the eyes of the law. If you look at Category:Non-free media we already host a bunch of photos of living people. --SVTCobra 17:48, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

This photo is in the public domain at least, though again, not sure if it's specifically Zapata. I'm going to upload the NC-ND image though. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 18:05, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- I would assume it is not him since it is in New Zealand. And good decision. I also favor the local upload. Cheers, --SVTCobra 18:10, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- I uploaded an alternative from his Facebook profile, from the same event apparently. I don't know if there's case for fair use there. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 18:29, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- Just so it doesn't look like we cherry-picked only the positives, could someone add something about how he struggled with the wind-resistance at high speed? Once done, I'll give a crack at reviewing this. --SVTCobra 19:50, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, nice photo. Gryllida (talk) 00:24, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
