Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Thanks to your hard work, you have been upgraded to Wikinews:Editor. Cheers, --SVTCobra 02:24, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Just checking up

[edit]

Hey RT, I just saw your retirement note posted on Wikipedia. It's always sad to see an editor go, especially one such as you. I'll try to keep in touch with you here, and although I don't visit this site much, maybe I'll check in every once and a while now that you're here. You can always email me if you need anything, and you have my Skype name. Keep in touch man, Mastrchf91 (talk) 00:07, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Reviewing articles

[edit]

Please don't sight articles where there has been no review. Completion of the {{peer review}} template on the article's collaboration page is how we've implemented this. If someone adds {{publish}} without first doing this, remove the tag or review the article. It is only when you mark the revision as sighted that it will appear on the front page and be indexed by Google News. This review and sighting is our attempt to meet Google's requirement of editorial control. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:27, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

You have been promoted

[edit]

Looks like your RfA has passed as successful, you're now an admin. Congratulations! Tempo di Valse ♪ 18:18, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: RfA

[edit]

Sure. I'll always be glad to help. Happy editing, and congrats once again on your promotion! Tempo di Valse ♪ 23:41, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

In response to your question here: We have an enormous backlog of articles that need to be archived. You can safely archive any article that was written more than about two weeks ago. So far, you're doing very well with the archiving. Best regards, Tempo di Valse ♪ 00:03, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Wow...admin already

[edit]

Hot dog and hot damn your amazing man. You continually impress me. Admin that quick...wow. Well things are good over at Wikipedia. I had to come back, there was just to much work to be finished. You're my hero bro. Plus I have my Gamertag posted on my userpage. I'm not to active here. It's just not as fast paced and exciting as Wikipedia. But the Pedia is slowing down to becoming less and less edited as more articles are created less edits are made. I am not aiming for admin right now but would certainly be honored if someday I reached my full potential and was ready for the job. Sorry for the long message but hey, you're and old friend I just couldn't resist. Gears of War 2 23:39, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

My first article

[edit]

Hey, my name's Hunter. I contribute at Wikipedia frequently, but I've never tried Wikinews before. I just tried my first article, Pennsylvania cop on trial for allegedly murdering girlfriend's estranged wife. I see that you contribute here pretty often, so I was hoping you could take a look and see if I've done this right and give me any pointers. I wasn't sure if it should go up to review or development, so I left it in development just in case. I asked a few other users for help as well. Please let me know. Thanks very much! --Hunter Kahn (talk) 03:44, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the review and the compliment. However, I see now that I've already made a mistake in my first article! The headline says "Pennsylvania cop on trial for allegedly murdering girlfriend's estranged wife" and should say "...girlfriend's estranged husband". Sorry about that, it's just a typo in the headline on my part, but I'm not sure how to fix the headline, maybe you could do that? Otherwise though, thanks for adding the infobox and reviewing my article, much appreciated! --Hunter Kahn (talk) 12:29, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Fixed the title. Next time all you need to do is click the 'rename' tab at the top of the article, and rename to the appropriate title :-} DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 12:45, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: main page

[edit]

I like your use of "secondary articles", it really gives a professional look. I do have a suggestion: perhaps we could use two regular leads on the left, for breaking/high-importance news, and put the secondary articles in top of the right column, sort of like this:

___________________
| | |
| LEAD 1 | |
|________|Secondary|
| | |
| LEAD 2 | |
|________|_________|

All the big stories are up front with this layout, without having to scroll down. Also, we could change the number of stories in the secondary list to four. Thoughts? Tempo di Valse ♪ 00:49, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

You mean {{Latest news}}? Hm. Not sure how we could do that. Perhaps we could use cascading boxes for this (the ones that you can click to expand or retract)? I'm not good with wikimarkup, so perhaps somebody with a better knowledge of markup could look into that.
Yeah, it might be safer not to tamper with it in case it messes up the feeds. I suppose we could always just leave it the way it is currently, but perhaps make it small text or something to make it shorter. However, I personally don't think it looks all that bad as it is. It only looks "stretched" because we had one of our rare days when 15 articles were published in 24 hours. Normally, the template would be about 3/4 of its current size. Tempo di Valse ♪ 01:08, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Yaaaay! A trophy! Thanks. Now I'll have to find a place to put it on my userpage. Tempo di Valse ♪ 01:18, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Looks good! I made it a bit longer, so that there would be less whitespace at the bottom of the page. Tempo di Valse ♪ 01:36, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your help! This is much better than the old main page version, great job. Tempo di Valse ♪ 01:38, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you signed up to participate in my writing contest. The contest has started, you can start contributing articles anytime from now up to March 31st. Tempo di Valse ♪ 14:45, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

P.S. There's also a separate reviewing contest, you can add your list of recently reviewed articles there if you want (we need more competition there, only two reviewers are on the list). Tempo di Valse ♪ 14:11, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Hallo. I have had some difficulties reviewing one of your articles, could you please respond to my query at the talk page of the above article? Thanks. Tempo di Valse ♪ 01:00, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I used the "About Us" part in your main page proposal in a template that's now on the main page ({{About}}). Hope you don't mind I copied it. Tempo di Valse ♪ 01:51, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia

[edit]

Well, I just noticed your departing message over on Wikipedia... don't have much to say, other than that's basically the same reason I don't actively edit there anymore either; lack of interest. Best of luck in the future, it seems you're doing quite well here. jj137 (talk) 03:50, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

A penny for your thoughts

[edit]

Okay, not really, but I am requesting your participation in the following Water Cooler Discussion: OR and Broadcast report. The discussion involves the need for specific policy concerning how Original Reporting relates to information recieved from a broadcast report of an event. This can include both news-style reports and non-news reports, such as a sporting event. Thanks and again, please share your thoughts on this so we can get as many people involved as possible, especially since this relates to an important topic such as OR. —Calebrw (talk) 05:18, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia user page

[edit]

Hey I was about to delete http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Avenged_Eightfold when I noticed that you had placed the deletion tag on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Red_Thunder&redirect=no before it was moved. Which page do you want deleted? Please respond on my Wikipedia talk page (or just uncomment the tag or tag the other page) as I won't have any wikinews page watchlisted.
