Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Dayton ohio mass shooting

[edit]

Hi Baozon90

Where did you take this information from? It would be great to include sources for this story.

Just 2-3 URLs would do.

Appreciated!!

[edit]

We appreciate your efforts here!! Please hang in there! You might try doing some simple editing on developing articles....it's a nice way to slowly learn about the flow of things here. --Bddpaux (talk) 18:18, 20 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Shootout by freeway

[edit]

Hi. Thanks for creating Shootout by freeway. Unfortunately, it has been deleted as an abandoned article. Not every article succeeds; we look forward to your continued contribution to Wikinews. Wikinews' content guide and guide to writing an article are useful resources for writers. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me or at the assistance page. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 09:23, 21 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

From what I undestand though, a memorial service was held for the CHP patrolman who was killed in Riverside, CA, which itself could be the focus of another article. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 09:44, 21 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thoughts on getting started

[edit]

I usually recommend folks start by reading Wikinews:Pillars of writing; it's a compact overview of our aspirations for each article. Mostly it's cobbled together from advice that had been made in article review comments again and again. Then, after that, there is a tutorial on writing a first article at Wikinews:Writing an article; and there is also Wikinews:Article wizard (which I put together a few years ago but then got frustrated with because I really wanted it to be interactive). --Pi zero (talk) 13:15, 21 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Truck crash

[edit]

The two sources have identical content and count as one. It's just so hard for me to find any other information at NJ police or department of transport. :-(

Re: Dog left in car for 14 hours

[edit]

Hi Baozon90

Thanks -but this appears to have happened on August 27, with court hearing scheduled for September 24. I've marked it as {{prepared story}} and suggest to find fresher topics for news.

Shooting article

[edit]

I tried to boost it up just a bit. Take a look at the link I added in. It appears this story is developing quickly. Glad to have you here!! --Bddpaux (talk) 16:05, 11 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I formatted what Bddpaux added and tweaked the title just a bit. You can find the article at Arrest made in Presque Isle, Maine shooting. —mikemoral (talk · contribs) 07:13, 12 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Truck crash article

[edit]

Since this had been tagged as abandoned for a while, I just deleted it. Kudos on your efforts here!! May I suggest: jump over to the newsroom and see if you can pretty up some articles that are already in development. Doing the 'little' things that help move an article along toward publication can be a great way to learn here. --Bddpaux (talk) 20:56, 12 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand the way you begin articles. Why do you delete so many things? --SVTCobra 03:08, 17 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Choosing headlines

[edit]

What you want for a headline is a sentence, in present tense, that tells the most important and unique thing about the focal event of the article. There's a section of the Wikinews:style guide about headlines: WN:Headline. I noticed, for example, you just lately created an article called "Taliban raid". That's a noun phrase, rather than a sentence: it doesn't have a verb in it. And it's also very generic; it doesn't give any specifics that would distinguish the particular event the article is about from hundreds or thousands of other events that have happened over the years. It also doesn't give the reader a clear notion of where this happened (see the disambiguation page Taliban). Cheers. --Pi zero (talk) 13:44, 23 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I developed the article and submitted for review. You have informed us, you have some limitations in your ability to contribute to Wikinews, however, I feel some improvements should be achievable, nonetheless.

If you take a look at WN:WRITE#Starting out, you will see a box where a title can be entered. (This box can also be found in the WN:Newsroom.) Enter a descriptive title (keeping in mind an International audience) and click the Create article button. This will set up the article with all the required elements, including the {{source}} templates. Even if you have a hard time writing, I hope you can copy and paste the various parameters into the source template.

If you can set up articles with this tool, it reduces the burden on other editors. Cheers, --SVTCobra 00:11, 1 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Baozon90: Speaking of headlines: thanks for your headline on the Connecticut plane-crash story. --Pi zero (talk) 04:21, 3 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

New articles/Article ideas

[edit]

Personally, I'd rather you create new articles than add to the list at Wikinews:Requested articles. Also, I am sure you can improve your submissions. You seem adept at copy-paste. You should be able to fill in more of the parameters of the {{source}} template. Also, try to avoid sources which require paid subscriptions. Wikinews calls them 'paywalled'. Cheers, --SVTCobra 21:19, 12 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
