Thanks!
Thanks for joing Country of the Week. It is completely volutary, write when you feel like it, don't write when you don't feel like it. Look forward to working with you! → CGorman (Talk) 20:29, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Print Edition
Redge is in the development stages for a new front page that in my previews (which unfortunately I cannot locate the URL's for now), I thought the page offerings he had were really excellent and ultimately will be implemented.
I'd suggest you keep an eye out for him to see about getting a link installed on it during development of a new front page layout. -Edbrown05 04:39, 12 May 2005 (UTC)

Print Edition on Commons?
Hey there, noticed the print edition was being hosted on a private server. Any reason it can't be hosted on Commons? --Mrmiscellanious 15:50, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
- It is hosted on my server for two reasons, the first is I wanted to be able to use fair use,(non-issue with the new fair use policy), the second reason is that I wanted it to be downloadable in poth PDF and SXW. I wanted to ensure that it can be downloaded in a free easily editable format, since in is created in OO.org SXW is the logical choice. However Commons does not support SXW, if wikinews does enable SXW support then I can start uploading it to Wikinews. --Cspurrier 15:56, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
- Ahh, alright. I understand - I tried to do the same for the Audio transcripts, but wouldn't allow me. Kinda odd. --Mrmiscellanious 17:28, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
Small error on May 22 Print Edition
The date for May 22's Print edition is for the 21. NGerda 06:58, May 22, 2005 (UTC)
And, for your regular cleanups with the anons...
It's small thanks, perhaps, but a recognition of your efforts by me, at least. Thanks again for all your work here; we look better because of it. - Amgine/talk 19:08, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

developing stories
My understanding is that, from talking to Amgine that they should be kept their unless they haven't been edited for 3 days, i don't know if thats an official policy though, i'll look into it.--Ryan524 19:29, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I am not sure of an offical policy or even if there is one, but I have always seen that stories removed from developing stories, if we did not do this it would quickly fill the devloping story bar. --Cspurrier 19:35, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
CARRD
Yeah, it's a press release. Personally, I feel as though press releases are indeed news. I'll work with it a bit anyway, even though I am not excited about it... simply interested personally. -Edbrown05 02:54, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism
I don't like how this person or anyone put this on the page as this is meant to be a news site and for some people such as myself, use to website on a public computer and if I get caught seeing this I would be kick off the terminal. 159753 17:18, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- We as administrators do the best we can to fight vandalism. Keep in mind that we are all only vollunteers, and when we are available and online, we are continually checking for vandals. The administrators alone cannot fight all vandalism all the time 24/7. That's why it's partly up to users (such as yourself) to spot vandalism, revert it, and notify us. Hopefully in the future, the vandals realize that all they succeed in is wasting people's time that could be spent writing valluble news stroies. NGerda 17:26, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)
- Sadly this is a part of it being a Wiki, we work hard to prevent vandalism, but we still have to few people working to stop it. During most of the day we catch it in under a minute, however this vandal strikes when many of the admins are sleeping. --Cspurrier 17:34, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I bet most vandals (i do) know it wastes your time, rthats why i do it, the reason why we want to wast your time varries, like me, i once was a legit user of wikinews, but got tunned down for becoming a sysop so I stopped contributing my time to wikinews, but that wasnn't good enough, i had to get back somehow, so i know access many diffrent proxies and use them to waste your time, because after 3 month and over 1000 edits, i wasn't good enough to become a sysop so i could block vandals.--65.241.12.7 17:58, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I understand where you are coming from, but why take it out on us? All that your efforts succeed in doing is distract from Wikinews' goal of community journalism. By vandalizing Wikinews, you effectively are stunting Wikinews' growth and prolonging the amount of time it takes for Wikinews to become a major news source; what you are doing is keeping major corporations in control of the media for a longer amount of time. Again, I understand your fustration, but why take it out on Wikinews? NGerda 03:52, Jun 9, 2005 (UTC)

WN print idea
Have you thought about always saving the most recent edition to the same filename each day (eg latest.pdf), so the front page link doesn't have to be changed? You could just rename the last one to a date-based name before saving the new edition. Dan100 (Talk) 17:29, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the idea, I have considered doing this, but for the time being it is slightly faster to just edit the link. --Cspurrier 17:37, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You could also save the files in the form 17June2005.pdf, which would allow the variables {{CURRENTDAY}}{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}{{CURRENTYEAR}} (this becomes: 22November2024; see m:variables) to be used, making it easy to upload them as the day's date for simplicity and eliminating the need to change them. --Naryathegreat|(talk) 21:19, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've got the time, knowledge, and equipment to handle nearly any aspect(s) of the print edition. I guess it'd help to know how things are running right now, what the aspirations are for the print edition, and what limitations you're facing right now. I don't really know what the story is on the print edition - such as it's mission, organization etc. If there are pages that have any info on it, I'd be more than eager to read them. --RossKoepke 03:42, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

3RR
Cspurrier, you have violated the Three Revert rule by reverting my edits more than three times while working in concert with Amgine to revert my edits. -- NGerda June 30, 2005 20:16 (UTC)
- I have only re verted twice, from Wikinews:Three revert rule: This policy applies to each person. --Cspurrier 30 June 2005 20:19 (UTC)
- Read the actual rule. The 3RR may apply to small groups of two or three working in concert to harrass another person. NGerda June 30, 2005 20:21 (UTC)
- The group bit only applies when then group is using the rv to "'harrass another person", something that should be clear we are not doing. --Cspurrier 30 June 2005 20:35 (UTC)

Print edition
I was looking at the Wikinews Print Edition, in PDF, and noticed that the columns are left justified. In newspapers, it is traditional to have if justified, so that the text is aligned on both the right and left. I aksed around and was told that you were the one who ran this so I though I would pass along my suggestion. Otherwise, the print edition looks great.
- This is not the case. As a working journalist for 18 years, I can attest that left justified and ragged right is the most-common form in newspapers. -- Davodd | Talk 4 July 2005 22:40 (UTC)
Lead article image
I understand your concern over Image:Malnourished child in Somalia.jpg, however it has been approved for release by the U.N., and it perfectly illustrates the current humanitarian situation in Somalia. Can I please add it back? -- NGerda July 5, 2005 01:04 (UTC)
- It is an very disturbing photo. While it might illustrate the situation well, it is not a good choice for the front page. Two other people on IRC also agreed with me on this. The other photo also shows the situation but is not so disturbing.--Cspurrier 5 July 2005 01:07 (UTC)
Somalia pic
I'm going to change it to a picture of a ship, which seems more appropiate than flooding. Is that OK? Dan100 (Talk) 5 July 2005 17:36 (UTC)
- Sure, I do not care much what it ends up being as long as it is not as disturbing as the one that was on it before. --Cspurrier 5 July 2005 17:47 (UTC)
An invitation...
I'm attempting to start up a new edition of Wikinews, one with a simpler user contributions system at m:Wikinews/Start a new edition#Open English. The goals of this project would be to simplify the process of submitting articles such that anyone with no knowledge of the Mediawiki software or the Wikimedia projects culture can easily understand and submit an article, and immediately see it on the main page developing articles section.
If you would be interested in supporting this project I would be pleased if you would sign up at the Meta page.
As I just wrote on the page you deleted :
The default text is really crappy, but I do not think the publication system is so bad. But default text is real bad. This is hardly a wiki anymore. No new editor can feel confident in front of that whole stuff. You make a big error here.
The wiki was made to be simple. You are just forgetting this. -[by user Hushie]
- Thepage you put it on was not the place for it, I do however agree with you, please post what you said to the water cooler. --Cspurrier 5 July 2005 22:24 (UTC)

Surprise
Oh, Craig... I have a surprise for you! -- NGerda 09:01, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
Non-commercial images have not been banned from Wikinews.
I noticed you decided that non-comercial images are not allowed on Wikinews. Although this is true for Wikipedia, this is not true for Wikinews. -- Davodd | Talk 19:08, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- Wikinews uses a 'whitelist' approach to images. We can only use image the board has aproved. Only publicity, logos, and screnshots are curently allowed by the board --Cspurrier 19:12, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- If this is true, then it needs to be clarified very clearly in our policy pages so that we know this for sure. I have seen such policies that apply to WIkipedia and Wikisource. I do not understand the reasoning for applying this rule - which is meant for a different type of wiki concept altogether. Unlike wikipedia, which is not time sensitive, it is not really possible for us recreate non-commercial images of a news event - unless we have a wikitime machine no one has told me about. :-) It is my understanding that traditional wiki content rules sat that if something is not specifically banned, then it is allowable. -- Davodd | Talk 19:29, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- From the fair use page "Any use not covered by this whitelist is not allowed. If you feel that the whitelist should be expanded, please comment on the discussion page." --Cspurrier 19:38, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- There is a major legal difference between a fair use image and a non-commercial image. For fair use - no consent is given for Wikinews to use the image by the copyright holder, we are in essence justifying our stealing of it. FAir use is a legally dubious - and precarious place for the foundation. For CC:By, non-commercial, Wikinews, being a non-commercial operation, *is* given consent to use the image, we are not stealing the image from the copyright holder since we have permission to use it , copy it and distribute it. A non-commercial-only image is not a fair use image, therefore there is no need to expand the fair use policy since we already have consent to use the photo. The problem exists when a commercial enterprise wants to syndicate our content. THEN, the image is not allowed by that commercial syndicator, hence the tag that says the image is non-commercial as directed by the Wikinews:Image use policy under "Grants of license." -- Davodd | Talk 19:46, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
Official policy or not?
I reverted your recent edit of the Wikinews:Image use policy since as an individual, no one person has the authority to unilatreally decide what is and what is not "official" wikinews policy. Addintionally, in the future when you change or revrt my edits, could you please do me the courtesy of explaining why you are taking such action? Although I am sure you have the best of intentions, it may help build a better sense of community and appear less rash if you reach out to others and explain your actions on a user's talk page. Otherwise it may appear you are dismissive of other people's viewpoints. As is said in Wikinews:Etiquette, "We have different views, perspectives, and backgrounds, sometimes varying widely. Treating others with respect is key to collaborating effectively in building a news team." -- Davodd | Talk 03:20, 11 July 2005 (UTC)

how long?
Hi, I noticed one of your edits and would like your advice. How long would you say a story should be before it's published? I published a couple today thinking that they were representative of that day and were unlikely to develop any more, but do you think they should stay in developing? Thanks :) ClareWhite 12:07, 15 July 2005 (UTC)
- There is no good answer to this, stories can be moved as soon as they are ready . I like to let my stories wait about 24hrs before publishing. However if you think a story is done, you can publish it as soon as you create it. --Cspurrier 16:00, 15 July 2005 (UTC)
The IP vandalism
I've traced the IPs and he's actually right - they come from a South African joint-ISP cache. I suspect they're dynamically assigned, but I've e-mailed their abuse desk to clarify. I guess we should only block them for 24 hrs though. Dan100 (Talk) 21:45, 15 July 2005 (UTC)
Weather maps on the print edition.
I was wondering why you changed from using Farenheit to Celsius for the U.S.A. map, as Farenheit is more widely used in North America. Thank you. -Martinman11 23:19, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
- I have not actually switched. I was away yesterday and was unable to do the print edition at its normal time, so I sent Chiacomo the draft and he finshed it and updated the weather maps. I guess I forgot to tell him to use Farenheit for the USA map. All future editions will continue to include the Farenheit USA map. --Cspurrier 23:26, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

Pretty print edition
Hi Craig,
I'm writing an article about citizen journalism and would like to include a small shot of the Wikinews print edition in it. Could you pick or make an issue for me that you think is the most visually appealing?--Eloquence 22:57, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
- July 9 looks nice, but I am a not a very good judge, sicne I like them all :). If this one will not work let me know and I will find/create a diffrent one. --Cspurrier 23:47, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

Why would an administrator be making such personal attacks behind my back?
No personal attacks[[1]] Have we ever even had a discussion about anything? Have you read the policies and guidelines? Do you think the person who starts a story (that 6 others spend time on) owns it and you can just delete it like some type of boss? What's up;I don't get it? You seem to be the one trying to chase somebody away; like me. Neutralizer 02:18, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
- I stated that you are in “my opinion a troll”. I believe I made it clear that I was stating my opinion and not a provable fact. If it was a provable fact, you would have already been banned. I can however say with certainty that your behaviour has been very troll like. I do not believe my statement was a personal attack, and I doubt many others would interpret it as one under that policy. --Cspurrier 15:02, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, fine then. Since you see nothing wrong in your behavior, I assume you will repeat it so I must reciprocate. This is the phrasing I will use, which I assume you will feel is not a personal attack.
"This often leads to people making comments like you received from CSpurrier, with the goal of chasing people off the site. This person has done several things like this before, and is in my opinion a troll." Neutralizer 20:04, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

No one will ever need to edit this template; it's simply displays the category on an article. I'm on vacation this week, so won't have as much time to check your stories. Unfortunately, as I seem to be the only English-language judge still reviewing stories, this means your stories may not be checked. However, when I return next weekend I will try to catch up. If I find any of your articles have problems, I will give you a reasonable amount of time to correct them, even if they are 10 days old by then. Thanks for fixing the infobox for me, I'll have a look at the diff in a minute and see what was wrong.

Thank you
for your comments. Please note that the message left on my user page was not something for me to reply to but rather the exact same statement that the same editor made numerous times in the past, on article pages and the water cooler. I am hoping that a user who is annoyed at me right now will simply allow a little "cooling off" period and refrain from communicating directly with me; and especially not use my page for their purposes. I am not going to be editing stories for awhile just so I can not inadvertantly upset MrM or Amgine. Also, you did not address the potential problem of comments that I don't like being stuck on my talk page if/when I am blocked and unable to respond...but again, thank you for your constructive comments. Since you did get involved,to this extent, I would really appreciate it if you could respectfully request of Amgine and MrM. that they respect this desire for a cooling off period? Others have also suggested it and I am trying to do my part in that regard. Neutralizer 19:28, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
- I think a cooling off period is a great idea. The note was mostly just there because it bugs me when people call things by the wrong name :). About the removal of comments, it is considered very rude to selectively remove others comments as you may have noticed I have left all comments on my talk page, even the ones I would rather not have on it.--Cspurrier 19:41, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

Reblock
I strongly oppose your reblock of Neutralizer for the full period of 6 months. Blocks of this duration have, to my knowledge, never be given on Wikinews for regular policy violations and represent a serious expansion of administrator privileges. In fact, Amgine himself has said that he wanted to achieve a change of policy through his action.
Reverting an undesired change is par for the course on a wiki. I disagree with such a change in policy (to give administrators the privilege to mandate long-term bans, and I also disagree with the the message it sends to the blocked user. Primarily because of the latter, I felt that a revert or at the very least a shortened duration of the block was necessary. Your logic would be warranted if we were just dealing with some wiki page. But we are not. We are dealing with a user who is blocked for 6 months. This makes careful review necessary.
Furthermore, we had already achieved a temporary compromise, namely, to negotiate this situation until we have found a policy, such as the proposed arbitration committee, that everyone can agree to. If you care about not causing fights, getting into a situation that has stabilized and making things worse is not exactly the way to do it.
I ask you kindly to restore the compromise of a two week temporary block. It achieves what Amgine wanted, namely to stop the alleged disruption, and gives us time to think about this issue.--Eloquence 00:06, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
- If you have not already seen it, please take a look at my comments on the water cooler [4] My primary reason for reblocking was I am opposed to unblocking obviously controversial blocks without any real consensus. I strongly doubt the full block length will stand, I have offered to unblock Neutralizer immediately he is willing to consent to arbitration or some other similar thing. --Cspurrier 00:19, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
The point is that I did not, in the end, simply unblock him, I transformed his 6 month ban into a temporary suspension of edit privileges due to the perceived risk of further disruption. How to deal with this issue effectively could then be decided within these two weeks, which should be enough time, I think. I believe this transformation of the block represented a reasonable compromise. Now we are back at Amgine's position, which is obviously not supported by consensus. (For the record, I do not agree with the notion that a disagreement among administrators somehow undermines their authority or the community as a whole.)
I like your suggestion of unblocking Neutralizer when he agrees to participate in a fair arbitration process, but I do still think there's no reason to "sentence" him to 6 months when there has not been a fair and reasonable process by which a sentence of this duration could have been decided. I would much prefer a block which is clearly labeled with the purpose of giving the community time to rethink the issue. If you think two weeks is not enough, that is another issue, but I'm not happy with the current situation.
To be clear, I am not defending anything Neutralizer has done. But I care a great deal about fairness in treating our users, and leaving no doubt that our processes are meant to improve behavior, rather than punishing people or enforcing some kind of club membership structure. I would very much like Wikinews to work towards an arbitration committee similar to the one used by the English Wikipedia and controlled by the community. I think that a process similar to those found in legal systems is, while sometimes a bit cumbersome, generally much more fair and reasonable than actions by indivisual administrators or even community vote (which tends to bring out an "us vs. them" spirit, whereas elected arbitrators have more of a felt obligation to be objective judges).
I will try to help a bit with the planning of the ArbCom for this reason. But I would still much appreciate it if we could make it clear that Neutralizer's edit privileges are only suspended because such a solution does not yet exist, and we need time to work out the problem.--Eloquence 00:52, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

Policy proposal Re; Time limit for Administrators
hi,; hope you can support this I just put this on the watercooler policy section
This is an urgent issue that must be addressed now, imo, because an integral condition for exercising administrative authority here on wikinews is stipulated to be "You are trusted by the community"[1].
I have designed a very simple policy proposal. Our past attempts at dealing with this sensitive issue(e.g.ArbCom proposals) have been unsuccessful, imo, because of their complicatedness. I would simply ask, if possible, that this proposal be given an "up or down" vote (with associated comments of course). Any attempt to complicate OR DELAY IT (especially by existing administrators) could be seen as suspicious behavior, I think. Administrators who have the community's trust have nothing to fear with this proposal.
Proposal;
1. As of Feb.1,2006, adminships will be for a 1 year term. 2. All existing non-Bureaucrat adminships will terminate Feb. 1st. 2006.
3.Nominations for renewal of existing adminships will begin on January 24th.

Wikinews:Print edition
Hi, I am thinking about one day in the new year, printing off, and photocopying (about 250) Wikinews:Print edition, and handing them out at a local community meeting. Is this inline with wikinews rules? By doing this I hope to get some people to help out on wikinews.
Keep up the good work with Wikinews:Print edition Brian New Zealand 10:38, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
- That would be wonderful! It is definietly inline with Wikinews rules --Cspurrier 20:04, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
user Nyarlathotep
Why did you add him to the list of admin. He didn't have community consensus. --MateoP 19:31, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- He received ~74% support, this would be considered a close case. We aim for about 80% support but it is left up to the bureaucrats in close cases such as this. --Cspurrier 19:41, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- "We aim"? What does that mean. There is no "we", this is a wiki. Show me official policy that says that. If you can't, then the wikimedia-wide definition of consensus must be enforced. And that is not defined by any number. Secondly, a bureaucrat is simply a person who has the technical ability to give someone admin status. They do not, however, have the ability to make decisions for the entire website. No one owns wikinews.
- The only reasonable thing to do at this point would be to deadmin user Nyarlathotep and bring up a proposal for how a person gets to become an admin. --MateoP 22:43, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- By we I meant myself and the other bureaucrats. A bureaucrat's job is to determine if community consensus exists for the person to become an admin, approximately 80% support is the target number though in many cases on Wikipedia a slightly lower number will be excepted.
Like many WN policies there is no written policy, just history. These "policies" come from the actions of Wikipedia bureaucrats and the other WN bureaucrats.--Cspurrier 22:56, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- You don't have the authority to make decisions on your own. Just because something has been done in the past doesn't make it correct. You can't make up new powers to give to yourself, you can only do what Meta:bureaucrat says you can do, unless the community grants you more. It hasn't.
- In order to solve this controversy, the best thing we should do, as a compromise, is to place user Nyarlathotep back on the wait list while specifics are discussed of whether or not you should have the power to overrule consensus. --MateoP 23:02, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

missing water cooler/policy archive
hi, u archived water cooler/policy recently. i think you've forgotten to add to the list of wc/p archives. Doldrums 16:27, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
btw, what's the deal with archiving while discussions are underway? are we supposed to carry on discussion in the archives, or move current discussions to the newly created policy page or should only "closed" discussions be moved to a newly created archive page. Doldrums 17:58, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
- Once archived a page should not be edited. You can move any discussions that you would like to continue back if you want. In order to preserve the page history it must be moved using the page move feature. I only found one discussion the seamed to be ongoing based on date and I believe it will not have anything else productive said on the topic.
- Also in regards to the changes in the style guide, I have no problem with the change, since it just explains a long held policy. Reporters mess up all the time most of the time these mess ups are small things like misspelling someone’s name. We can prevent these errors by requiring more then one source. With every extra source the odds of mistakes goes down. On bigger mess ups by requiring more then one source we become more likely to find conflicts and NPOV problems in the source. --Cspurrier 18:10, 13 January 2006 (UTC)
