Making this challenging[edit]

So far so good with the quiz, its actually turned out harder than I expected - based on the scores. Who wants to set the quiz next Sunday? I'd like to be putting up a score then. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:34, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I could do it, though I'd prefer to see several others try first, because I wasn't expecting to be the sole person thus far to get full marks, and I don't want to make it impossible. I daresay lots of people will fancy it, and I can wait but if not, I'll take it willingly. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 22:43, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How about 10 - 15 questions, relativley easy, but only if you've been keeping up with the news, and updated every Sunday. Thunderhead - (talk) 22:51, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My idea was 7 questions, taken from one story of each day over the past week. I didn't totally manage that for the current quiz as I was busy/distracted, so I think I've a couple of questions from the same day. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:19, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've finished a quiz for Sunday. Celticfan383 11:08, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer 10 questions, because it gives a score on 10. I think 1 sports story is max, plus stories on ignored topics (Africa!) should get priority. It's also nice to have some images, I believe. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 20:55, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We should put as many images in as possible, it makes it look a lot better. TheFearow 21:44, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the author of this quiz is doing a good job at balancing making it challenging with making it realistic --Anonymous101 19:13, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again, the only thing that would be nice would be if others contributed to the quiz as well so that I'm not the only one this is relying upon. I know others have supported this quiz in the past but I think we should take turns more frequently. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 22:28, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Other langs[edit]

Have any of the other language Wikinews sites picked this up yet? --Brian McNeil / talk 08:55, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just to go further on this, the extension wasn't on all languages - I got a query from de and grabbed Brion in IRC to fix that. There is a translated version of our quiz (this week's) on the German Wikinews. I also notice a couple of de. contributors posting scores. :)
Oh, and who's on the case for this Sunday? --Brian McNeil / talk 07:15, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I prepared something which User:Ironiridis will hopefully finish. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 09:55, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As it seems, it.wikinews had already put up a quiz, though hadn't linked from here. Already added 'it' interwiki. Regards, Jurock (reply here) 15:45, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From the looks of things the Germans are currently just translating our quiz and adding their articles where they have them. This means when you get to their answers page you have even more articles than ours. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:10, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Auto-updating[edit]

Hey,

I developed a system using the time parserfunc so we can prepare weekly quizes on subpages and make it auto update when necessary. See Wikinews:Dynamic quiz. It uses the week num, so old quizes are archived, can still be taken, and can be prepared infinitely in advance. What do you think? TheFearow 22:36, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its cool, but It should just be like a 10 question quiz that you update each week. 10 questions are cooler.Flubeca
I'll update to 10Q then. TheFearow 04:05, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I put in this weeks/last weeks, and am working on one for next week. Who thinks we should update for this new format, that makes it archive and auto update, and easy to prepare for the next week. TheFearow 21:24, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If the problem is that updating on monday, then why dont we update the quiz on monday! Not too hard to change. Why don't we use this new system? TheFearow | userpage | contribs 23:08, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The idea is to have a quiz on Sunday to review the news of the past week... on monday, a new week starts. No need to adapt the original idea to an auto-updating system that doesn't fit it. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 19:46, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I dont get whats wrong with monday - then we can include news from every day of the last week, including sunday. Monday is the start of the week in the time the server uses. TheFearow | userpage | contribs 23:02, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sunday is a day of relaxation for much of the world. A time to do pointless, but pleasing, things like the quiz. --Brian McNeil / talk 23:15, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Using #time, its fairly easy to make it change on any day of the week. Bawolff 19:00, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm using the week number from time - if you want to update it to make it use sunday, feel free. Matt | userpage | contribs 23:53, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that would be a good consensus, don't know how to do it myself so please implement Bawolff's idea. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 18:08, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do that tomorrow. Bawolff 06:20, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

16 should be right. Bawolff 14:37, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, this will auto-change every sunday. If there is no quiz for a week, it will display last weeks and yell and scream at you. Bawolff 14:57, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I tweaked it some. Using {{#time}}, without a time/date to use, causes it to use the date and time that the current page was last converted into xhtml which can be way off due to caching. Using relative dates/time without any date/time present causes it to be relative to that date/time, rather then using the current date/time. This was noticeable to a Wikinewie when logged out. --darklama 21:52, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Easy addition of scores[edit]

Does this look interesting? http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Simple_Forms#SimpleForms_Usage_Examples or is it risking more problems using this with the quiz extension? --Brian McNeil / talk 08:22, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The quiz extension is for quizes, this probably wouldnt work that well, as it would require a lot more work. I think we should stick with the Quiz extension for now. TheFearow | userpage | contribs 21:15, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm with Fearow on his one, I think, but that's getting a touch out of my depth... Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 19:36, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My thinking was that with this extension we could have a form displayed when you submit your answers that allows you to input your score and auto-adds it to the talk page. --Brian McNeil / talk 07:19, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Registered users can now do that with a gadget in preferences. It may still have some bugs but I will try it next week. --User:Anonymous101 09:30, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Problem[edit]

The current method of linking to the version of the quiz under the scores section may not work well. If we're going to use week numbers then it needs to link to that. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:51, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Answer to question should be re-worded[edit]

Under the question "Which of the following statements about the doping case against Floyd Landis is not true?", it says that the correct answer was "The cyclist "might" be stripped of his title of Tour de France 2007 winner". In the article it says in the first sentence, "2006 Tour de France champion Floyd Landis "will" be stripped of his title after test results revealed, Friday, the cyclist used synthetic testosterone during the competition." Some people may think the word "might" and "will" as the same meaning. I suggest, along with Nzgabriel, that this should be re-worded. FellowWiki Newsie 02:08, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On further research I have now noticed it says in the question about the 2007 Tour de France. Landis 'won' the 2006 title. (unsigned in Nzgabriel). 125.236.183.151 07:55, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

quite tough[edit]

8/10 .

i found the world quiz quite tough .i enjoyed participating.i look forward to more new quizzes.

You may have found it tough, but you got a pretty good score. The quiz goes up sometime on a Sunday, although if we end up waiting on someone from the U.S. doing the last couple of questions it can be kinda late. Oh, and there's a scores section on the page, you edit that section and add * x/10 (comment if any) ~~~~. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:32, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome![edit]

This is the greatest thing ever! I love it!

Great! If you go back to the project page you'll see there's versions in German, Italian, and Spanish. We've had pretty much all positive feedback for the quiz, so... see you next Sunday? --Brian McNeil / talk 10:31, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not updated[edit]

I knew this would happen, we get a great new feature and then after a few weeks, no one can be bothered updating this. This is a terrible sign why Wikinews may, in the future, fail. Becaue no one can no longer be bothered. 202.124.104.19 20:22, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but we've had a few big problems lately and we have been very busy. You could update it if you want, or one of us should get around to it soon. Matt/TheFearow | userpage | contribs 20:25, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, some of us actually have real lives and cannot always update the quiz. I was busy and there are users like Brianmc who have been updating the quiz every week. There are users that are willing to update, in fact, I will ask them to update this Sunday's quiz. If you are complaining, then you should update it. FellowWiki Newsie 21:49, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great initiative[edit]

I was just notified of this by Brian McNeil the other day - I just wanted to say that I think this is a great initiative. I'm active on Wikiversity, so it's a big buzz to see something developed for there modified in such a cool way. Unfortunately, I gave up about a third way through this week's quiz, as I haven't been following much news this week. <sheepish glance> All the best, Cormaggio 20:54, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, there's a link to this page from v:Quiz - any ideas how to make the links better on this interwiki project? Cormaggio 20:59, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you at least had a go Cormaggio, we're really pleased to have the quiz extension. It is a natural addition to a news site - a form of positive reinforcement that if you know what's going on you'll do well. The extension could probably do with some way to automatically post the score on talk or a sub-page, but as it is we get a lot of people prepared to 'fess up' to doing badly in the quiz. It helps make us see each other more as human beings and work together better. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:14, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Border of Turkey and Iraq.[edit]

U.S. President Bush promised Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan support after recent clashes with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Where does Turkey border Iraq?
This question is quite ambiguous, but Turkey boards Iraq to the Northwest and Iraq boarders Turkey to the Southeast, the questioner got the answers mixed up, I think. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

washington a city?[edit]

"Two computer discs containing the personal data of 25 million U.K. citizens were found out this week to be missing. They were sent from a Revenue & Customs office in what British city?" should be changed to "Two computer discs containing the personal data of 25 million U.K. citizens were found out this week to be missing. where were they sent from?"

meant i got it wrong :( as i knew about Washington being in the uk but im fairly sure its a town

Longer end of year quiz[edit]

Sorry Anonymous101, I was working on a quiz of the year in my userspace and didn't realise someone else was doing the same. Mine is longer, and I spent quite a lot of time on it, so I hope you don't mind using it instead. the wub "?!" 16:59, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

{{flag}}[edit]

The quiz has been flagged since October 2007 (link). I'm pretty sure there's no current discussion on the quiz, so can we get the flag removed? Chris Mann (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 04:05, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The flag is automatic and appears when a new quiz is needed --Anonymous101 Talk 18:55, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I kind of made the current one as a joke, since I have no idea how this is supposed to run. Am I to assume that the quiz is dead? b2xiao talk 19:30, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New quiz template[edit]

To help facilitate writing quizes, I made a template that i hope makes creating quizes simpler. Basically it removes features that we don't use, and uses template syntax some people might be more familiar with. See {{Quiz}} for more information. All comments appreciated. Bawolff 06:16, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

new year[edit]

There might be an issue with linking as the year roles over (There's one day where the week is 1, but the year is still 2008). If it hapens, just manually put the right template in, and revert it the week after. Bawolff 23:22, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sporting questions[edit]

The 2 questions concerning sport teams in the New Year quiz both are exclusively American, being an international reader answering a world news quiz, surely the sport questions should be events that are more internationally followed 88.111.87.59 17:31, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A 2010 in-review quiz[edit]

In the past an extended end-of-year quiz has been set up. About now is when to start thinking about one for this year.

  • Put it up on Boxing Day (Xmas +1), or put it up on New Year's Day?
  • Suppress immediately preceding/following standard quizzes?

Thoughts? Volunteers? --Brian McNeil / talk 08:41, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New year issue ... again[edit]

The quiz indicator in the RC said that it was time to create a new quiz, so I did ... then realised that it doesn't work correctly because of the new year (it's several days early for the new quiz). What's the best way to fix this? Tempodivalse [talk] 03:41, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Little late now, but basically find me and yell at me ;). (Manually change the quiz page to transclude the right quiz temporarily, or make the quiz its trying to include be a redirect to the proper one). Bawolff 17:54, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
