Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Giorgi Gakharia became PM of Georgia

[edit]

Hello. Before you go any further with this article, we cannot publish news from 8 September. It is 6 days old and not WN:FRESH. I did see Gakharia named his cabinet ministers a day ago. If you want to write that, it is fresh enough to publish. WN:PILLARS is also helpful reading for contributing to Wikinews. Cheers, --SVTCobra 18:50, 14 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

I mean the Vice-PMs (not cabinet). See: http://georgiatoday.ge/news/17286/Giorgi-Gakharia-Names-Vice-PMs --SVTCobra 18:56, 14 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Nika Melia left prison

[edit]

Hi, I see you have started working on the article -- that is good! Just a couple of things I should let you know -- please don't add {{publish}} tag to articles -- only reviewers should be publishing articles. Secondly, an article should be under the {{develop}} tag, and when you think a reviewer can review to publish the article, replace the template with {{review}}. If you have any difficulty, please come by on #wikinews or #wikinews-en on IRC -- you will find me as acagastya all the time. (Re the category, please note, we create categories only when we have at least two-three articles to fill the category.)

Hi there!

[edit]

I see you've started on aricle on COVID related deaths. Good show! Keep going! --Bddpaux (talk) 17:53, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi! @Bddpaux: It was deleted, but I don't know why--ჯეო (talk) 17:15, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi, ჯეო. Any article which does not get published on time is marked abandoned and then, if it is inactive, it is then deleted.
•–• 17:19, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@ჯეო: Upon looking at the deletion log the reason cited for deletion is a copyright violation. It was deleted on June 21. Henrymyman (talk) 19:04, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Henrymyman: Ok, but it was translated :)--ჯეო (talk) 19:07, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@ჯეო:Translating foreign language news is an excellent initiative, but a word for word translation still is a copyright violation. Henrymyman (talk) 19:13, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Henrymyman: Okay, I will translate it without translating word-by word--ჯეო (talk) 19:15, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Henrmyman: I have wroten about some local news, but page of Georgia is not updating after refreshing--ჯეო (talk) 19:19, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@ჯეო: Articles that appear on this page may be only published articles. The draft about local elections hasn't been published yet, so it does not appear on the page. Also, for articles to be published, a minimum of two reliable sources are necessary.

@ჯეო: If you want your article to be published, you have to sumbit it for review.Henrymyman (talk) 16:40, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

'Arrested' article

[edit]

An excellent effort......but a bit too brief! A very newsworthy topic, indeed!! --Bddpaux (talk) 16:44, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Bddpaux: If you know about political situation in Georgia or anything about Georgian political persons it's really nice news to notice to world :) But know It's late because he was arrested on 1 October :) Administrators or reviewers can approve article because it's still really important because of political situation in Georgia. So, third President of Georgia was 8 years in exile, worked in USA, was head of Reforms' Council of Ukraine, also Georgian Government was still saying he was criminal. If you know his biography and History of Georgia maybe it's interesting news :) If you will search you can see other 'Arrested' articles in Wikinews. Bye, have a nice day--ჯეო (talk) 16:49, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Just a remark: reviewing articles on Wikinews is language-sensitive in the sense, that reviewers might not speak the source language, and machine translation is often not reliable. In the future, if you wish to speed up the process, you may stick to English sources (preferable) or provide translations for the key sentences on the article's talk page (much more work on your part). Sometimes using just English articles would leave out much needed detail - I have been there, and came up with this example. Hope this helps, and you are invited to cover the developments of the Saakashvili case. - Xbspiro (talk) 21:08, 11 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
