Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

NK?

Just wondering why you have interest in North Korea while not being geographically close? What prompted your interest in the topic? Gryllida (talk) 13:54, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Gryllida: North Korea is mysterious for many and for me is an interesting topic. Henrymyman (talk) 15:52, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Story about report

Found it a bit shallow with facts missing such as the basis on which the report has been made. Was it based on some collected data or based on story telling from people who left the country? Over what time frame was the malnutrition observed? Did UN test NK's or another country's nutrition previously? Just asking as answers, if known, could help with presenting the news in a more comprehensive and relevant way. Regards, Gryllida (talk) 13:54, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Just for reference, these are pretty standard questions one should seek to answer on Wikinews so that it contains original synthesis and stands out from other news reports of the same situation. Making the connections other news companies aren't paid to do, basically. --JJLiu112 (talk) 13:57, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gryllida: I'm looking into it. Henrymyman (talk) 16:01, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Gryllida (talk) 20:37, 7 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you

For the support. Durantnba (talk) 22:48, 24 June 2021 (UTC) I have to write ✍ in spurts. Apologies. Durantnba (talk) 22:53, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Durantnba: No worries, anyone helping is always welcome. If you have questions ask me or any other user. Henrymyman (talk) 23:39, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tanker article

.....reviewing it now. May take me a while as I am super busy at work!--Bddpaux (talk) 16:37, 3 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Didn't catch the staleness at first.....sorry. Hopefully, we can recruit/develop more Reviewers around here soon. We are hurting for them badly. On synthesis articles, we try to keep the 3-day rule pretty tight (I'd deviated from that, but we really need to hold the line for credibility's sake, if nothing else).--Bddpaux (talk) 19:02, 3 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux: I don't think that will come further from this. The s'porean man will probably be on the loose for some time and the North Koreans won't (from my experience) react. I'm also disappointed to see that article go to waste but for a reviewer to publish would be breaking some rules, so there's nothing I think we can do about it. Thanks anyways for taking the time. Henrymyman (talk) 22:33, 3 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Henrymyman: it always saddens me to see articles as this go to waste. A rather unfortunate development. --JJLiu112 (talk) 00:30, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, hopefully we can improve that situation very soon.--Bddpaux (talk) 14:08, 4 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

While I am not certain........

...I think, just maybe your 'military drills' article could be spun off into something fresh? Any new article developments/events going on?--Bddpaux (talk) 17:30, 17 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Bddpaux: Unfortunately, news like this happen and then we won't hear about it until they say something again in another year. Unless they make a show of force by launching a missile, we won't see anything new about the drills (speaking of statements and reactions). The North is busy now with celebrating one of their major holidays, so there won't be more threats or actions from the North.
Hi Henry, I think I've found a way for this article to be saved. I've used Newsweek's article about the DPRK issuing warnings to ships as a new focus. Perhaps we can collaborate on this together? Pandakekok9 (talk) 12:55, 20 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Pandakekok9: I appreciate the tip, I'll see what I can do. Henrymyman (talk) 13:29, 20 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
Btw, I didn't notice this newer article earlier, so I had to change the focus again. I also removed the bit about the hotline, since it doesn't seem to be related to the two DPRK senior officers' statements, I think. If you think it's needed, feel free to re-add them. :) Pandakekok9 (talk) 13:55, 20 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to see you go

Just noticed the update on your talk page. I try to avoid lamenting on the situation we're in, since that won't help anything, but yeah, so many articles getting reviewed days after the event and then marked as stale isn't really sustainable long-term, so I do understand why you've left. Best of luck in the future, do hope that one day you'll be able to return :) --LivelyRatification (talk) 01:27, 31 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

@LivelyRatification: I'm not planning to leave Wikinews forever; I'm planning to come back whenever things get better. Whether I come back or not is in the hands of whoever can fix this mess, if it can be fixed. Wikinews was fun while it lasted but now waiting for someone to tell me that "unfortunately this is stale" after over a week has taken the fun out of it. I feel as if my contributions to the project were not appreciated and I'm sure that others feel the same. Thank you anyways for the wishes and I hope I can come back to the Wikinews I joined in March. Henrymyman (talk) 01:38, 31 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Maybe you could use this to refresh the article. This event might worth mentioning as well. Unfortunately, I am too pressed for time to work on the article, but it seems promising as it is. I like that you added primary sources, and some context about the liaison office (i.e. that it was blown up by the very side which now seeks to open it again). - Xbspiro (talk) 04:28, 30 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Our user pages

I just noticed how similar our user pages are! Was this on purpose? I'm a bit flattered, really. --JJLiu112 (talk) 01:52, 23 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@JJLiu112: Yes, I used yours as a template to build mine. Hope you don't mind. Henrymyman (talk) 02:42, 23 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Of course not, glad you liked it. --JJLiu112 (talk) 02:46, 23 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Barnstar

This barnstar is to recognise the commitment to bringing Korean news to English Wikinews, which is not an easy task but is one that is highly appreciated. [24Cr][talk] 14:31, 29 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Cromium: Thank you! Henrymyman (talk) 22:00, 29 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

The Patience Barnstar

The patience barnstar might be less cringe than giving yourself a DPRK star. But who I am I to say? I am a boomer (not literally, but in the view of you kids). Cheers, --SVTCobra 09:45, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@SVTCobra:I've set that star as a reminder of a certain time, but this barnstar will of course serve as another form of reminder. Thank you.Henrymyman (talk) 14:41, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Category:Henrymyman (Wikinewsie)

Hello. Just to let you know I’ve renamed your user category to be consistent with others in Category:Wikinewsies. [24Cr][talk] 17:50, 27 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Cromium: Ok, thank you for notifying me. Henrymyman (talk) 18:47, 27 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Wait times

I recognise wait times between reviews are deeply insufficient, and to that end I apologise, especially considering your fervent support for my candidacy as reviewer to resolve this exact issue. I pledge to you, as well as all Wikinewsies, that this is temporary, and I will dedicate more time from to-day to contributing. Thanks for your steadfast volunteering despite this. Your, and everyone's patience is commendable. --JJLiu112 (talk) 05:52, 5 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

@JJLiu112: Don't push yourself; it's better for you to review only a few articles than stressing yourself and disappearing. Wikinews has become less of a priority for me as I have many time-consuming programmes to create and often can't find time to write. I still think that my support for you was valid as supporting a new reviewer is supporting Wikinews. Henrymyman (talk) 12:24, 5 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
