Getting started as a contributor
|
Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |
The core policies

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

- Thanks for your kind note on my en.wp talk. You say you're about to evacuate yourself from the fires, so I sincerely hope that everything will go well for you. Best regards, Tempodivalse [talk] 00:46, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- I also hope things go well, if you are online, is this map accurate on BBC News? SriMesh | talk 04:50, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
- Me again. Another article Jesusita wild fire sends 30,000 from their California homes has been started, do you have an addition from your neck of the woods to this updated article?SriMesh | talk 05:30, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

No legal threats
Please don't make legal threats on Wikinews. We'll deal with the vandalism/abuse here, the IP having been issued with a week-long block. If need be, we'll extend that to a rangeblock too.
I'm not asking because of WMF policy, but because I'd rather not let an idiot like your harasser spread xyr grief across multiple projects. --Brian McNeil / talk 02:04, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- On T-Mobile he gets on edit per IP address; the only effective way to stop him is by blocking 172.56.0.0/23 and 208.54.64.0/24, as I did on Wikipedia. But then he just vandalizes my pages on Wikisource, Wikiquote, etc. He has issued unambiguous death threats to me, and it has become quite clear to me that on one except me gives a fuck. So I'm doing something about it. Antandrus (talk) 02:12, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- I've seen similar before, I'll get a local checkuser to make sure those ranges won't hit anyone else. --Brian McNeil / talk 02:19, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. Appreciate any help. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Antandrus (talk • contribs) 02:22, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- Requested CU. If it's going to hit anyone else, I'll sort them with IPBlockExempt so we can shut down that as an abuse avenue. --Brian McNeil / talk 02:23, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

I think I've now got all the abusive revisions hidden. If you're passing this stuff onto law enforcement, which I agree you should, I'm happy to assist them on that with copies of abuse/threats, IP details &c. --Brian McNeil / talk 03:39, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
Semi-protected
I've semi-protected this page for a while. If you'd rather not, or prefer a different (finite) duration, just let me know. (Just btw: I tend to agree with brianmc's remark, above, about no legal threats; more generally in this case, I'd recommend against feeding the troll.) --Pi zero (talk) 23:44, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, thanks. I know. I can just ignore him if you can handle reverting the rubbish he puts here from time to time. He's been fixated on me since 2006. When I signed up for Wikipedia, way back, I had no idea that this was part of the package. Antandrus (talk) 00:41, 4 September 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for monitoring recent changes, Antandrus :)
Hi and welcome back, Antandrus!
I don't think I saw you before. In terms of music, do you also do music editing (on computer) or only playing musical instruments in the non-digital way? Having seen your personal page at Wikipedia, it does not say a lot about your technical (programming or coding) contributions. What are your strengths about that? If you do, do you program only for the wiki, or also for some other platforms (mobile, desktop)? From a non-coding perspective: do you like testing software and giving ideas about how it could be improved?
Thanks, --Gryllida (talk) 04:08, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Gryllida! -- yes, I do a lot of music editing (I'm a composer) but also play violin and piano -- or anything with a keyboard. And also the theremin. I don't do a lot of programming, per se -- but I do enjoy the last part of what you said, testing and suggesting improvements. In my day job I use a lot of technically specialized software with small enough user bases that all users are necessarily beta-testers. :) Antandrus (talk) 04:19, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi, unfortunately this is not a GS-wiki. --Mtarch11 (talk) 05:47, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
