Hi, I'm a newspaper publisher from Massachusetts (USA), but also a contributor to Wikinews. I'd be willing to help with the production of a print edition, if you needed me. I'll try to create one sometime this week, and upload it, to give you an example of how I would lay it out and produce it. I also e-mailed you about this. Sobar 21:27, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

This sounds great, I can always use help. Sorry about the slow reply, my real job has been keeping me busy :) --Cspurrier 21:31, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

worthless stubs

CSpurrier I just developed an article are you going to block me for "worthless stubs" like you said?

You were blocked after being asked/warned many times to stop. Any user is welcome to submit stories, however these stories should be of a sort that can easily develop (major world news, very well sourced stories with wide interest, etc) or they should be nearly complete when submitted. Creating stories that are very short, local news that you never return to is of no value to Wikinews. --Cspurrier 14:11, 18 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

blocking policy rule

thought i should inform you that i've removed the "troublemakers" rule in the blocking policy as there was no consensus to keep it.

i pointed out some problems with its current formulations (in between plenty of ranting :) )in the talk page and on this discussion, u might be interested in modifying the rule to address them. Doldrums 06:59, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I dislike the wording, but I do not see a problem with it (or without it :) ). The rule is just restating the disruption portion, in a way that I think makes it slightly worse sounding but I do not believe it adds any new powers.--Cspurrier 15:25, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

is this an improvement:

  • Disrupt the normal functioning of wikinews.

if you think it is, u might consider changing to it, i've done my share of reverts on blocking policy today. Doldrums 15:33, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

School IP addresses

I blocked 151.188.16.12 for vandalism earlier, but a lookup on the IP states it as "Fairfax County Public Schools FCPS". I'm sure I've seen other IP pages where they listed what school or library the IP belongs to. It there a template for that to put on the IP (user or talk page?) and if the guy comes back would it be worth notifying FCPS? --Brian McNeil / talk 14:35, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Template:Sharedip can be placed on the user's talk page. Depending on the type of vandalism contacting the school can be very effective. --Cspurrier 15:21, 23 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom outcome

Hello Craig,

you have come in 5th in the ArbCom election. The result is a tie with Ed Brown. Since we want to fill 5 seats, we have essentially three choices:

  • That one of you chooses not to serve
  • That both of you serve, and we expand the ArbCom to six members
  • That we hold a run-off election between the two of you.

Do you have a preference between these options?

I am leaving the same message on Ed's talk page.--Eloquence 22:08, 31 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Expanding the arbcom sounds good to me, the more the merrier :) --Cspurrier 22:58, 31 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi Craig. If I am reading the vote results correctly, you and I are tied for the 4th and 5th spots on the committee. I have not yet responded to Eloquence because I wanted your reaction first. -Edbrown05 23:18, 31 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:Jyllands-Posten Muhammad drawings.jpg

Hi Cspurrier... this image was a scan of a newspaper page, not a photo, and it has been accepted as fair use on Wikipedia. Are you sure that it is not acceptable? Um, is there any other way that we can have the Mohammad cartoons on Wikinews? Um, discussion on water cooler, probably. - Borofkin 22:06, 6 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Craig... any comments on this? - Borofkin 22:49, 8 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd really like it if someone could actually explain how a thumbnail is ever not fair use. Nyarlathotep 23:44, 10 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

What Amgine siad on the WC is correct. Size of the image is only one small part of what makes an image fair use. --Cspurrier 23:46, 10 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I would come to think that a comic that has ben posted on almost every major paper in the middle east and europe, and now in some schools in the U.S. that is very well is fair use. Also its size shopws no author, ads, or copyright info...I do not see what the problem is here...maybe the reason for this disagreement is someone is offended by it and thats why they do not want it up here? Jason Safoutin 23:50, 10 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Most newspapers get photos from AP,AFP or a similar group. One of these groups have most likely negotiated a license to use the images, and it is via one of these groups the paper has obtained permission to publish the image. Schools and other educational uses such as encyclopedias ability to use fair use images is greater because they are not directly competing with a news organization. --Cspurrier 16:13, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Amgine's statment that "its much harder for us to claim fair use since we directly compete" made perfect sence. I just never understood how size couldn't override this. Oh, well, whatever. BTW, someone made a Hampster dance version [1]. lol Nyarlathotep 00:00, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was thinking that it might make sense for you to make a little video showing how you do the print edition every day -- this could help people in the other language editions understand the process and create their own print editions, not to mention archiving your knowledge in case you'll ever stop maintaining the English one. There are a variety of tools in the external link section here for making screen recordings. On Windows, DemoStudio looks reasonable (I'm not sure which operating system you're on, so I'm guessing). What do you think -- are you up for giving it a try?--Eloquence 12:15, 7 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sounds like a good idea. Do you know of any good programs to do this for Linux? (I run Kubuntu) --Cspurrier 15:50, 7 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have a feeling that's going to be trickier. There's an overview at NewsForge. vnc2swf seems like the best solution, but I'm not sure if it's feasible to run both server and client on the same machine. I also found this proprietary tool which can be downloaded as a trial version. Perhaps a version without sound created with vcn2swf or xvidcap would be sufficient for now.--Eloquence 19:03, 7 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please repond to request for your recusal

Hey, please respond ASAP because the recusal policy Chiacomo showed me says; "The Arbitrator in question will seriously consider it and make a response."

In addition, the policy refers to the possibility of an arbitrator being "required" to recuse themselves for non-trivial matters. These are non-trivial bias indicators, therefore should you refuse the request; other Arbcom members will need time to decide whether the recusal is required. The request hit the site at 01:14, 22 March 2006 so hopefully you can respond right away.
Your bias is palpable,I think, as shown by the list of indicators (including your 6 month block of me and your on the record comments as to MrM's general innocence.:"... I believe the primary reason for this RfDA and the other attacks on MrM are not his actions on the site but that he holds an unpopular and somewhat odd :) political view --Cspurrier 23:45, 8 December 2005 (UTC)") so I respectfully ask you to do the honourable thing here,Craig. It would appear quite arrogant, I think, for you to insist that yourself be on a panel to judge any arbitration to do with MrM; and especially one to do with me on the other side. I only comment in this tone because it has been some time since the recusal request was made and I worry that you may be planning on going out of process by ignoring the request. If you need more time to consider your response, it would be polite to at least say that on the arbitration talk page, it seems to me.
Policy requires you to respond before arbitration begins so please do not leave the community waiting any longer. Thanks in advance. Neutralizer 14:05, 23 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

regional print editions

Hello Cspurrier! I don´t know, maybe the idea´s just rubbish, but what do you think about creating wikinews print editions for specific regions? So for example, in adition to the World print edition you are running with lots of time and brain potential spending on it, can we put a oceania print edition on the web? I´d like to hear your opinion on that. --Benedikt Kroll 04:23, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I would love to be able to offer a regional print edition, I do not however have the time to regularly create it. If you or any one else would like to create it, I would be glad to help --Cspurrier 15:24, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Craig, if we had the articles to be able to do that kind of thing, do you have some sort of template/guide you could write up on how to create print editions? I'm thinking if you aren't around and we wanted to start a regional, topical, or breaking news edition. Lyellin 19:10, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Audio Wikinews Question

I just recently read the discussion page on Audio Wikinews. Yikes. There was a complaint about the "annoying voice" and bad quality recordings that have been posted onto Audio Wikinews: News Briefs.

MrM's trap

I suppose MrM laid a trap by putting an edit on my talk page and inviting me to "[insert Wikinews username here"]; since his edit was in a humourous vein I assumed he was playing around and, for healing purposes, decided to join in by accepting his suggestion to insert a user's name. He complained on admin alerts and so I reverted my edit[3]. Neutralizer 02:34, 1 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

would not consider it so much a trap as two people editing without thinking. MrM probably should have worded it differently and you should never have edited it. It is because of this I decided to not block. You need to remember, you never edit someone elese's signed comments, for any reason. --Cspurrier 13:55, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews print, and mania

Dear Craig,

Are you planning to come to Wikimania this year? I would like you to compose something about the wikinews print edition, which is somewhat unique across wikimedia projects; at least for presentation and discussion online, if not in person; one of the wikinewsies in attendance could speak about it if you cannot be there yourself.

Regards, Sj 04:02, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was thinking about a discussion of the process; how others could do the same; what feedback has been like. We could coordinate the discussion with a discussion of whether to produce other print media; of the article-of-the-day email, for instance. Sj 16:15, 29 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
sorry likewise that the daily newslet didn't work out quite as planned. The first day's work was interesting, and shared digitally at least; but the layout didn't get done. I hope that wikinews can field a real delegation next year, with a distributed layout team, and an audio/video mixing team for live podcasts and videocasts. Now *that* would be something noone's ever done well. Sj 09:24, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

CheckUser

Hi! You are now a checkuser here. Please apply to checkuser-l, the international checkuser mailing list (this is mandatory). Jon Harald Søby 21:10, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

To make things right

As a part of ArbCom you have selected and approved some users to do CheckUser permissions. This is done without any discussions, nominations or selection by Wikinews community. ArbComs part in this is not stated in any policy on Wikinews and this speedy and unauthoriced process can be seen as instructioncreeping. A fair posision in this case is to accept Wikimedia Foundation demand for allowing CheckUser permissions. It is that ArbCom approve them.

In ArbCom You now have selected these users. That is not a within ArbComs authotity. Whats done is a mistake and can easy be corrected by ArbCom. Declare this decision open and ask the community to select these users. The selection process is a buissnes for the whole Wikinews community and should be done by voting.

I must point to the importance of this. As I wrote in water cooler this can be a first step to make ArbCom to a kind of goverment body and this is not whats decided. I will go so far as to question the status of those of you, that dont work against a community based selection in this case, as elected representative in ArbCom or in worst case raise the question of ArbComs abolishing.

I hope that you solve this problem and make things right and dont put prestige in this in itself small thing. international 22:09, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have just finished reading the wikinews protocol sections and consensus is required. Please correct this situation which I assume you played no directive part within. Redman 22:51, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I am sorry, but I do not really understand what you are trying to say, the community is welcome to suggest users. If you have user who you think should have checkuser rights, let an arbcom member know, and we can discuss it on the arbcom mailing list. I do not see how a bunch of voting would really help anything, according to the checkuser policy checkuser is granted based upon the decision of the Wikimedia board and the Arbcom not the consensus of the community. A public nomiantion page would probably have been good, but when it comes down to it I do not think it would have mattered much.--Cspurrier 00:13, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think you have to understand. If you disagree then just discuss the subject. I would prefer that you discuss it whith the other ArbCom members to make a decision to undo ArbComs last decision and then we can start the selection of checkuser authoriced wikinewsies in a proper way. international 01:17, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Or be free to ask me about what you dont understand on my talkpage international 01:33, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I guess I am not sure I understand what you think should be done, and what good you think that action will do --Cspurrier 01:34, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
"and we can discuss it on the arbcom mailing list." Better discuss on wikipages for the sake of transparity. international 01:36, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

My proposal what to do

  1. . Change, Nullify or revert the decision about who will reperesent Wikinews with Checkuser rights.
  2. . Wait to the community have selected suitable users for the purpose.
  3. . Approve (or not) the selected users.

Greetings! I'm a Wikipedia admin, and I've recently changed my username there to counter the trend of vandals digging for personal info on admins, in order to disrupt their non-wiki lives. Former U.S. soldier charged with rape, murders

Recently, there was a move war and plenty of things got out of hand. In fact, the article ended up deleted and I had to work to restore the article. I protected the page and the talk page from moves to help prevent it from happening again. Since you are capable of moving pages as an administrator, please, do not rename the article until we can settle on a permanent name, because things really went bad. —THIS IS MESSEDOCKER (TALK) 22:27, 4 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

3RR

I have temporarily unblocked myself to leave you this message. I will block myself after I am done so as to fulfil the 24 hour block. Incidentally Ealturner was also involved in the edit-war and broke the 3 revert rule, as I had mentioned (along with a diff link) a few lines below the complain against me on WN:ALERT. Though still a little confused as to how you did not notice the aforementioned link provided by me, I ask that you block Ealturner for a similar 24 hours based on this evidence-

1)First Revert 2)Second Revert 3)Third revert 4)Fourth Revert 5)Fifth Revert

Blocking may cause unintended problems

Hi,Craig,

  • I noticed since my return how the comfort level and tone among active editors had improved noticably since May with all active contributors now being more agreeable and cooperative with each other. I am concerned that the blocks of MyName and PVJ59 move us in the other(negative) direction regardless of the justifications for the blocks...especially if Ealturner is not also blocked for 3rr. Perhaps you could unblock them for "time served" and if problems continue it's likely they can be ironed out by the community without blocks or,as a last resort, some other admin will block whoever needs blocking.
  • Also, as a Bureaucrat who is on ArbCom, I suggest that it's better if you can leave the blocking to other admins because it is crucial that our Bureaucrats and ArbComers be on a totally friendly and "above reproach" plane with all non-vandals.
Interesting opinions :). I disagree with several of them, but I am glad you shared, they made me think. If no one would do anything that requires a block, then we would have no need for blocks. There has been a lot of debate blocks have on Wikipedia and also in our CRJ system in regards to jail time. My views on blocks are the same as my views on jails in our CRJ system, we punish people not so much because we expect them to reform but because it shows that society does not approve. I believe this society disapproval and partly fear of punishments discourages bad/criminal behaviour. If we do not punish those who commit bad acts, we are saying that we as a society approve of them. I also greatly prefer blocking to page protection, our only other real option in an edit war, page protection punishes everybody, blocks only stop those who need to be stopped.

The idea that Arbcom members and bureaucrats should be totally friendly and "above reproach" is good one and one I agree with, however I disagree with how it should be achieved. I believe this is best achieved by being active and involved and doing the right thing. I know some users probably including your self do not believe I am totally friendly and "above reproach". I am sad that this is the case, bu I believe it is somewhat unavoidable. --Cspurrier 20:51, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think you're friendly but sometimes forgetful like all of us. For what it's worth, Canada's sentencing averages are about half what they are in the US for the same types of crimes and Canada's recidivism rate is also about half what it is in the US (even less for young offenders). Obviously there are other factors but it does seem sensible that long incarcerations might make people less able to function when they finally get out. What's the deal with MyName? What did he do wrong? to be "punished" for? Neutralizer 04:01, 9 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
The US criminal justice system is awful, but it does work well enough to function. More focus on rehabilitation would be very beneficial, as I believe Canada does. Prisons in the US often make criminals worse then when they went in.
MyName is/was blocked as part of an ip block. The ip was blocked after it was used for vandalism.

MyName claims to be a reformed vandal, and crated an account for trolling slightly before the block. It is very likely (98%) that MyName is the vandal or is sharing a computer with the vandal. The ip is perm blocked on pedia for using abusive sock puppets. If MyName is not the vandal he is in the best place to have the vandal dealt with, basically unless he can get the vandalism to stop. he will probably continue to blocked as the vandalism occurs. --Cspurrier 22:45, 12 July 2006 (UTC) My 2 ¢ in regards to blocking is that it's not a bad thing when done properly and equally as stated in the 3RR policy. The benefit you seek, a demonstration by the community that any particular action is bad, is lost in this case because the message given by the long block is that one can get away with a 3RR violation if someone else has other violations - the riot police are busy elsewhere. Clearly the benefit of an immediate short block outweighs the long late block from the demonstration of community right/wrong standpoint, especially in view of the goal to educate instead of punish when possible. But since blocking is an all-or-nothing action, it's a more punitive action when used over a longer term. An even larger problem with punitive action before versus education is that when the actions are done without comment (besides the "You are blocked" on the user's talk page), the community really doesn't know why. "Admin action alert doesn't say who was blocked by whom, nor why - at least for the editing violations on this story. Karen 21:58, 9 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Will you consider posting on Wikinews:Admin_action_alerts to alert admins of actions such as blocking? My confusion in the matters there are increased by admin action alerts being made and admin actions taken, but the actions taken not documented. Karen 07:13, 11 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I will try to next time, though admins should really be watching the block log. --Cspurrier 22:45, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Neutralizer 3rr

Does the 3rr apply to the mainpage headline?

Neutralizer keeps changing the tagline to a non-neutral POV. I've reached my 3 reverts. Can I keep changing if I phrase it differently each time? I'd thought that would break the spirit of the 3rr. Neutralizer has about six reverts. This is what I meant about the 3rr being unenforcable. But I'll give it a go here. What can I do? What can you do? [5]Ealturner 02:31, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Can I note disruptive behaviour from Neutralizer in this thread. [6] Two or three of us worked as a team to fine tune this huge article, get it NPOV, sourced, everything attributed, facts, images, different sections lots of content.- It seems the first thing Neutralizer did when he saw it was slap a NPOV and develop tag. The article had no POV. All statements were attributed. It was a very good article. Frivolous and disruptive behaviour that was not respectful to the hours of work we put in getting the article ready. As I will tell him, I would have preferred Neutralizer to have stated his problems on the talk page or made changes himself rather than to send it to develop and NPOV. I'm furious and not a little dishearted. Ealturner 02:00, 14 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Neutralizer 3rr title violation

On the day after concensus reached. Against protests in discussion. Ealturner 13:05, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Please also note Neutralise "NPOV'd" this article[8]. There were no complaints for hours before the article was made top headline.

Neutralizer calls the title "Totally 1 sided as well as inflammatory and sensationalist"

The title is "Israeli railroad station bombed. 8 killed, 23 injured"

Please do something about this individual. He is making work impossible. I don't want to leave but I will not take much more of this. Ealturner 13:34, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Neutralizer has not violated the 3rr on Hezbollah-Israel conflict continues, Israel threatens Syria with"an offensive with disastrous consequences.". He made one change and 3 reverts, if he reverts again he is then violating the 3rr--Cspurrier 14:08, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was not aware there was a distinction between a change and a revert. A fellow administrator had previously warned me that a change I made was a revert. I am incredibly exasperated with all this. Ealturner 16:39, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

For it to be a revert, it has to be changed to be the same as an earlier version. His first move was something new, then you reverted, then he did and so forth. --Cspurrier 17:19, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

PVJ: Harassment notice and 3rr violation; edit protected page II

PVJ left a harassment notice on my talk page. [9]

I find this unnecessary. My second request for deadministration was based on the fact he broke the three revert rule. This is a third abuse to add to his previous two abuses. The de-admin request was removed by another admin, Amgine, who said PVJ had abused his editor privilege. When I made the request I was not aware of the difference. To abuse the rules of wikinews when one is an administrator is surely to abuse one's position as administrator also? The let off for his two administrator abuses has emboldened him. Ealturner 17:44, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Adding another rfda so soon after the last one is not really allowed, so Amgine did the right thing in removing it. Under our current policy rfdas are only for abuse of admin functions, abuses of editor functions can be dealt with by the dispute resolution methods such as arbcom. I would highly recommended you consider one of them. I also find his harassment notice to be inappropriate, but there is not really anything to be done about it.--Cspurrier 18:41, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
PVJ made four reverts Civilian casualties increase as Israel-Hezbollah conflict continues. The page was subsequently protected; this stopped us all from continuing to tell the news. Ealturner 18:08, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have blocked him for 24hrs for this. --Cspurrier 18:29, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yay... an editor situation dealt with accordingly. -Edbrown05 18:46, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The above page was protected by an administrator because PVJ broke the three revert rule. Now PVJ has since edited the protected page to leave the following

"Sysops please note:This article has been protected due to edit-warring."

Since the protected page was disabled to editors there was no need to edit it. It is another example - fourth - of PVJ abusing his administrator powers.Ealturner 19:46, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Did PVJ unblock himself to add this note? Edited to answer: probably not as he edited it at 17:17 p.m. Ealturner 19:46, 16 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I had provided suitable reasons for those edits Cspurrier. I do not think they count as 3RR violations. PVJ59 Opinions 06:59, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
The justification for a revert is irrelevant as far as the 3rr goes, all reverts count. Reverts even with a good reason are considered harmful, hence the reason for the 3rr. --Cspurrier 14:48, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

POV "hizbollah crossed the border to kidnap the two soldiers"

I do not see anywere these rules you just invented yet. This is about neutralisation. I agree that no new information from the last few days should be added to this article, but it is still allowed to neutralise it. And it needs to, because the informations it contains are not necessarily true (the fact that Hizbollah crossed the border to kidnap the two soldiers) So, even if you don't want this "information" to be removed, the minimum would be to tell it using the conditional form. Could you please do it and turn the problematic sentence this way?

Thank you for not answering my question. It is so nice to see that you don't give a fuck to my concerns...

I have not yet answered your question, not because I do not care but rather because of a lack of free time, my real world commitments have kept me very busy for the last few days. We do not edit published articles. According to WN:NOT “Wikinews articles are not works in progress. Once written and published they are historical documents; they should not continue to be updated or changed. Especially, they should not be altered to an angle or POV not reflective of the article as it was published.”--Cspurrier 18:16, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well I understand this point of view, but There are other rules in wikinews that should allow small changes in published articles, such as in [10]/
  • Wikinews is written from a neutral point of view. Where-ever possible, all points of view should be presented providing they are referenced and are on-topic, with appropriate context given to how widely the points of view are held.
  • Wikinews is factual. Articles should deal only with facts and their verifiable consequences. There is neither conjecture nor personal opinion of the author(s).
Also in [11]:
  • Do not promote any particular viewpoint even when it is scientifically proven or widely accepted. Simply report and explain it along with disagreements.
And finally in [12]:
  • Wikinews articles are not press releases. There are a variety of press release aggregators online who provide this service; check the Reference desk (or try News sources on wikipedia) for links to some of them. Wikinews articles address the 5 Ws and H where possible, and attempt to present newsworthy articles which are balanced and have multiple sources, which press releases by definition do not.
  • Possible measures in response to violations of these rules: Changing the content of an article (normal editing).
See ? ;) I think these rules are more important (especially those relative to NPOV) that the one that states "published article SHOULD not be edited".
I just mean that the edits I submit are minor, do not change significantly the containts of the article, but are very important for neutrality. If you think adding the POV that the soldiers may have been captured on the libanese territory is too radical, then at least it should be used the conditional form when saying they were kidnaped on the israeli territory. It is not too extensive and it would bring a lot for neutrality.

Revert

Hi, I'm sure it's a dumb question, but what actually constitutes a "revert"? Is it when I take the article completely back to where it was before? Is a title change a revert? What if it's changed to slightly different wording than what it was before? Thanks. Neutralizer 14:30, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

A revert has no clear definition. Taking the article completely back to where it was before is definitely a revert. Partial reverts are where things get messy, reinserting the same element again would probably count as a revert. For example if you put one of the Abu Ghraib photos in the article and some one else removes it, and you reinsert a different Abu Ghraib photo, it would probably count as a revert. However if instead you put a picture of a boat, it would probably not count as a revert. --Cspurrier 14:52, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

You have revealed here that you used Checkuser on two suspected sockpuppets (User:Amgines and User:Abba). What is anomalous, however, is the fact that there has (apparently) been no request for Checkuser to be used on these accounts. A RFCU is not required according to m:CheckUser. RFCU is the place for checkusers to be requested not the place to log checkuser requests. Let's use your bot instead

Hey Craig, I've decided to withdraw my bot's RFA because your bot is already equipped with the necessary doodads, so once User:Messedrocker/pagelinks is a blue link, it'll contain a list of archived articles. —this is messedrocker (talk) 11:33, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Okay, the list should be complete by now. Anyways, what I'd like is for your bot to tag the bottom of articles with {{archive}}. —this is messedrocker (talk) 12:05, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
The bottom? Hmmm, I've tagged Category:September 25, 2006 to see what Category:Archived looks like, and assumed the template would go at the top. That would be a bit more tricky for the bot as it has to go after the date template and any infobox template, but before pictures. I can't guarantee that the older ones are well enough formatted to allow a bot to fix them. I'll do Category:September 26, 2006 with the tag at the bottom then we can see what people prefer. --Brian McNeil / talk 12:12, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I tagged about 200 and it looks as if everythign went ok. I will run the bot on the rest over the next few weeks. --Cspurrier 20:37, 24 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Specificly it has problems with some (I'm presumbing unicode) characters. it seems to be escaping them as ? marks instead of using %hh in url/using unicode in url, or whatever its supposed to do to escape them. Bawolff 01:50, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
As you guessed it is a unicode issue. I think I have the bug fixed. I was logging them as they happened and fixing them by hand. I would like to apologize to everyone for leaving the bot running unattended, I got called away and forgot about it. Blocking it was definitely the best thing to do in a case like this. I am going to run it a bit more, now that the bug is fixed and I am back at my pc. --Cspurrier 03:41, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Talk-page protection

I wasn't too keen on protecting my talk either, but it seems that's the only way to stop trolls like this one from wasting our time. Zeest(Talk)(Newpages) 16:49, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

The best way to deal with true trolls is to ignore them. However there is no reason to believe 88.154.193.117 is the same user as the one who you protected your talk page for. Talk pages should never be fully protected and only very rarely semiprotected. --Cspurrier 18:30, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
That vandal wasn't me. I didn't troll, I didn't vandalize and I didn't engage in a personal attack - I talked about User:PVJ59's behavior and his extemist POV that harms the project - not his persona. The talk pages are here for constructive talk, and as an admin you should invite and facilitate that in order to improve content quality. If you are unable to engage in constructive talk, or take responsibility for your actions, you are unfit to be an admin. ←Humus sapiens ну? 21:21, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shail Patel article

Why would you delete that article? I hadn't even put my sources on it yet! --Jtaillon 19:44, 28 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

CheckUser Question

Hey, Cspurrier. I've been reading around on Meta, and I came across the CheckUser policy. Wikinews currently has 3 users with Checkuser status. How is this possible? Checkuser policy says that two must be elected per consensus? Sorry about the tech question, Thunderhead - (talk) Congrajulations to Kat! 07:59, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas, Cspurrier/Archive2! I have really enjoyed working with you this year, and I am honestly looking forward to another year just like it. Wikinews is a great community, and I am really excited to be a part of it. Again, Merry Christmas! Thunderhead

Merry Christmas!

HO HO HO! These people got no presents from me this year.
FellowWikiNews is whishing thou a Merry very pegan Christmas , Seasons Greetings, Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, or whatever thou calls it, and
realised they had purposefully forgotten about thou. This user is completely thoughtless, doesn't care about Season's Greetings,
and therefore DEMANDS you have yourself a Merry Christmas... NOW!

Failure to comply will result in going to jail with Santa. (Note: Santa is Satan spelt backwards)!

Christmas Story (Children Friendly):

So kids, is Santa Democrat or Republican??!

Often depicted as an obese man wearing a tasteless red, ermine trimmed suit, Santa Claus is a self-employed Caucasian male who's been married to the same woman for several centuries. It appears likely that he is a churchgoer, insofar as he is a Catholic saint and a former bishop. It has to be assumed here that Claus was released from his vows, or else he would not have been married.

Frequent arguments have erupted over the political affiliation of Claus. Ten years ago, Dick Cheney inadvertently dealt a savage blow to the morale of the Republican Party when he misidentified the political affiliation of Santa Claus in his best-selling book, Parliament of Whores. "Santa Claus," he said, "is a Democrat." However it is perfectly obvious from his demographic profile alone that Santa is in fact a Republican.

This assessment is often rebutted by Democrats with Anne-McCaffery counter-analysis: Santa Claus has no children. High-achieving professionals without children trend Democratic. While the Clausian canon does not specifically address the issue of Santa's children, numerous extra-canonical sources suggest that Claus did, in fact, reproduce. Numerous Christmas TV movie specials alone support this point.

Santa is renowned for an aggressive adherence to a binary naughty/nice list, which suggests an impatience for nuanced moral positions that betrays his Republican preferences. Santa's mere willingness to define individuals along a naughty/nice axis demonstrates his indifference to the philosophical stance of, say, The New York Times. And note that no canonical or extra-canonical Clausian text indicates that Santa ever attended college or, God forbid, graduate school.

THE END!!!

FellowWikiNews approves of this story.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! Wishing you all the best for the forthcoming year. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:21, 23 December 2006 (UTC) Reply

User page, creds

Dear Craig, two things: you should update your user page to note the year of the first paragraph :-), and I could use another image of a press badge. I'll be attending the chaos communication congress next week, and would like to attend their press conference and give them due coverage in English. Sj 21:53, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I am visting family right now so I only have my laptop. I do not have any copies of the press badge templates with me, but Messedrocker might be able to make you one. --Cspurrier 09:05, 24 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
