don't vandalize wikinews. Jacques Divol 16:09, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I realize very much, but give me a good method of doing it otherwise. Thank you. Hmm, maybe I should upload my own images... Sorry but I'm not going to do that today I don't think. Regards Sean Heron 16:11, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It would help if you would explain what you are trying to do, then we might can help and get it cleared up more quickly. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:12, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, sorry, maybe my comments on edits were a bit shorthandish. OK, here goes: On commons they have a bit of a problem. Most People want every Picture to belong to categorys (logical). On the other hand, there are some that at the bottom end of the category tree, put the images in galleries, and say they than have to remove the category, because otherwise in big categories, they won't see new pictures, that have not been sorted/added to the gallery yet. Anyway, I had made the proposal, that they keep the Category, and add a little DPL on the gallery page, which shows the unsorted pics. Now unfortunately though, they don't have DPL installed, and I recon they never will have, If I can't give them a good example. Category:Orchis is my example. Many kind regards Sean Heron 16:19, 27 September 2006 (UTC) I realize I should have explained first (or maybe put a short note on the watercooler. I think I would have reacted same as you. Sorry to have caused bother. Sean Heron 16:20, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the source of the main page, or the Newsroom for examples of DPL in use, you probably want ordermethod=lastedit and a count to restrict what's shown. DPL will allow people to manage categorised images far better on Commons, heck half of wikinews runs on them - just check the region and country portals. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:28, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the hint with "ordermethod=lastedit", I didn't know that :D. I myself know (at least the basics) about DPL, as I am active on de.wikinews (which is were I actually wanted to put together the example, I only realized later I was on the english wikinews... I reconed people there might wonder less about my strange doings :/). What I need (and have already linked to here) is a concrete yet simple example of how my proposal for commons could work. And Category:Orchis does a nice job of that I think. It may have been unwise, in that it might get taken to pieces as vandalism, before people want to look at it. But I promise sincerely to undo all the changes (categories) Ive done, in a week or two, when the example has been sufficiently viewed on Commons. Regards Sean Heron 16:36, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here is were I posted my "example" by the way.

It may be useful to you to categorize images at commons for this cat thing, compared to local uploaded images (if you put category:sorted and category:Orchis directly on Image:Orchis militaris 080505.jpg (not commons:Image:Orchis militaris 080505.jpg) then it would be categorized in wikinews as that, but be uploaded to commons). Bawolff ☺☻ 23:40, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen that you have been at the commons, and have probably realized why I categorized those here: only as an example. I can't understand your message without assuming that you didn't understand why I was doing what I did. Regards Sean Heron 03:53, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, deleted all the stuff I made then, thank you for letting me so unbuerocraticly use wikinews as a DPL demo site by the way :D. regards Sean Heron 08:45, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Korea opinion poll[edit]

looks like u've picked on a very good topic - Humanizing the North Korean Nukes Story (Columbia Journalism Review Daily blog).  — Doldrums(talk) 03:37, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Korea poll[edit]

i intend to publish the the long-overdue article - Wikinews interviews South Koreans about relations with North Korea. can u take a look at it please, comments and fixes welcome. would be nice if u cld verify the figures are accurately transcribed. thanks,  — Doldrums(talk) 02:13, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

appreciate the work u (and the Korean friend) put into this. Wikinews can use more more such original reporting. and if u can do a similar thing on a street corner, instead of an airport lounge, it'll be even better!  — Doldrums(talk) 13:01, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
yep, it's great that the poll got picked up by ja & ch. glad i could help out with writing it. if u're considering doing more polls or writing about how to conduct them, the wikipedia journalism articles, and many online journalism resources have quite a few tips to start off with.  — Doldrums(talk) 08:39, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What to do on G8[edit]

  • Certainly the arrival of the heads of state at the airport (wednesday, 11 -> 17:00)
  • possibly the dinner arrivals
  • Most important: G8 family photo!
  • Walk with young people looks interesting

Try to catch as much as you can.

If you don't find a place for internet access: I have some Belgian friends over in the Alternative Media Center of Indymedia, maybe you can hook up with them (we are certainly alternative media :-) ).

Good luck, --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 17:18, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Been arrested?[edit]

Hey, not seen a peep out of you today - if you can find 5 minutes can you give your userpage a makeover with the accredited reporter template? --Brian McNeil / talk 22:24, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, I haven´t been arrested :D, thanks for asking. I didn´t go out to the protesters at all to be honest. I´m back home since yesterday morning, but had to go to work directly from the train (my colleagues were freindly enough to let me start work an hour late). Oh, and I didn´t let hear from me Thursday, cause I wasn´t in the press center for long, I moved on to Heiligendamm pretty directly. That then took somewhat longer than expected (due to protesters blocking the line, again :D, and I had to make my way back home again pretty soon as well.
I´ll work over my userpage now though :). Regards Sean Heron 17:43, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you would like to blog about your experiences, you could post it for our Wikinews blog: http://wikinewsreports.blogspot.com . It's tradition to blog on original reporting there, and you've already been mentioned.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 20:04, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Mentioned by you, I think, yes :D ? Hmm, when I saw that some other people had written about how they had done stuff, I was thinking that might be nice. I definetly have plenty to tell :). I still have some notes I made that I haven´t got round to posting yet, and I think I´d like to do that first. But I´ll keep it in mind. Regards Sean Heron 20:08, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've sent you an email invite for the blog. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 09:27, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article[edit]

Please don't move articles until you discuss it on the article talk page, especially when that is already occurring. 70.54.11.65 00:27, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you abandoning this article? --SVTCobra 17:12, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I didn´t intend to no (but I guess I kind of have). I wanted to work on it just now, do you think it can still be published (seeing as its so not new?). Sean Heron 10:37, 14 June 2007 (UTC) PS, If the article is done, you think it publishable, and its past 14:00, would you publish for me ? Ta.[reply]

STOLEN!![edit]

Actually I somewhat stole it from User:Zachary who put up a smaller version when my internet was messed up...so technically you stole it from 2 people :-P DragonFire1024 21:40, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Trouble With Politeness[edit]

The General: By its definition, politeness is a manner feigned to make it difficult for the receiver to tell the speaker's true thoughts. Thus it is ultimately contradictory to the purpose of letting the receiver discern

The Specific: Shankbone has acted in a manner entirely unbecoming to a reporter, and would've been fired from any newspaper he worked at - if he tried to insert personal swipes at world leaders in supposedly objective articles. THere's no point being polite and saying "Hrm, don't you think this is unwise?" - they just shrug it off as "Oh well, we have a difference of opinion, Sherurcij is probably an anti-Semite himself" or something along those lines. There are a dozen people willing to "politely point out mistakes", but a thirteenth person pointing out an error will never make any difference that the first twelve didn't. So now there's 12 people pointing it out politely, and one person being an asshole about it if you continue after the first warning.

Hope this helps explain the methodology, and why "polite" is important - but not always the best choice. Sherurcij 01:17, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are absolutely ridiculous, you look ridiculous, and you sound ridiculous. You have taken one article that I did not publish and did not finish because it was 11:00 at night and I was interviewing a Presidential candidate the next day, and you are being a jerk. You are the only person who tore the article to pieces, yet you have taken some mantle of being the Speaker of Truth, or, "Why wait for 12 people to be polite when I can just be an asshole right at the get-go?" It appears it has more to do with your own POV than anything else. Let's stay out of each other's way on here, because you're a two bit reporter who apparently has a degree in journalism yet here you are on Wikinews, as you struggle to find someone to finance you as an independent journalist. Fat chance. Maybe it's your personality. I will revert any future changes you make to anything I write. If someone wants to revert my reverts, fine, because that will make them that person's edits. But I won't stand for you editing my work. Ciao. --David Shankbone 01:42, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
David, "two bit reporter" and other language is uncalled-for. Cool it off, please. And remember, as much as it can be frustrating, it's a wiki. Unless Sherurcij is not being constructive, his/her edits are just as valid as yours. irid t i e 01:46, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I stand by what I wrote, and that user is defending her right to be nasty, so she'll receive a nasty response...the problem is someone feeling entitled to be, in her words, "an asshole about it." I'm not the problem here, this user's attitude is. --David Shankbone 02:03, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just as this user does not have the right to harass you, you do not have the right to harass this user. Please, really, avoid ad hominem, keep a cool head, and if you're tempted to post something nasty (this goes for both of you) just back out of that edit screen. Okay? Please? irid t i e 02:06, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Letter of assignment[edit]

Sean, what DragonFire1204 said has nothing to do with the letter of assignment. It is about something related to it, however.

About the event: We can have a vote in the water cooler if people accept you to go to this event. Then, if you are accepted, create a page called Wikinews:Accreditation_requests/Letter_of_Authorization2 and copy the text from Wikinews:Accreditation_requests/Letter_of_Authorization there. RE: New Article Trouble[edit]

Hey Sean, thanks for the pep talk. To be completely honest, i just got sorta lazy. I started the article at around 2am local time waiting for a video stream to load. I was very impressed at the rate at which other contributors started to show up on teh article, I've never worked in real-time with other users on an asynchronous message board before; it aws interesting and I plan to continue editing for wikinews. But yeah, as for taht one article, I just got tired and lost my momentum and after it was agreed upon by the collaborators what changes the article needed, I just sorta figured that eventually someone would, but I guess there is more ownership of articles here than at wikipedia and that never happened. Lesson learned.

But yeah, thanks again, and happy editing! -Shaggorama 01:27, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bali[edit]

If you're not gonna publish anything on Bali today, then I will. Just like filler, general type stuff on the opening. --SVTCobra 14:29, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would say make your Original reporting a separate article. Merging Original Reporting with what is a copy of Public Domain content would just be too weird and confusing to the reader. --SVTCobra 16:52, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering, I´d only glanced over the article, but it looked like pretty well on topic and in depth :). Yeah, I reckon keeping split is best. I´ll rename, and see if I´ll rework it a bit. Sean Heron 16:55, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So far so good on the Bali reporting, grab a 2nd lead spot for your next piece and we'll be back to all the leads being original reporting. :-) --Brian McNeil / talk 08:42, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

come on i think you need to be resonable here mike, we cant go round telling people leads are changing otherwise we would be able to do nothing else. news changes quickly - IMO your article should have been where it is now, as an interview and the bali article as news should be second....--MarkTalk to me 10:38, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ideas for Bali[edit]

Could you do an article on the NGOs and their views of the conference? Greenpeace and Oxfam for example are definitely out there I know, so maybe you could interview them too, ask what their views are, maybe take a picture if they are doing something creative to protest climate change... --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 19:25, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking about that myself to be honest. I´ll get back to you on it later today. Sean Heron 03:47, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Erm... things happened. I going to eat now (havent since breakfast), and then I could send some emails asking for Monday/ Tuesday, as all the action is behind closed doors those two days (as the last two). I´m actually thinking of asking the delegations, cause I reckon that for one I won´t have much of a chance of getting them when the ministers are there, and also cause I thought they´d be more interesting than the NGOs. What is still a bit of a mental block is who to ask, so feel free to make suggestions regarding that. I guess I might go for Japan, Canada, US; China, Pakistan, India; and some EU nations (I guess Germany and UK would be at hand), but I´m afraid that in the light of me wanting to give this NGO some help, and anyway, this is going to be far more than I can cover. Regards Sean Heron 11:33, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Oh, Interview questions would be good as well of course, although I guess Im in the best position to judge whats interesting. If I send out requests Ill put up my proposed questions somewhere as well.

Hmm, I´ve sent out quite a number of requests, but only got an answer from brazil up till now... :( . Regards Sean Heron 03:35, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Party?[edit]

What's up? Are you partying too hard? Maybe you can write about the parties instead. Take pictures, and we'd have an angle to the conference that other outlets don't have. Cheers, --SVTCobra 02:41, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I might have been in between, yes :). But two weeks of short nights just takes its toll towards the end... I think I may have been missing some motivation as well, as there wasn't actually much news (as in there was nothing unexpected that happened yesterday). This mornings developments are far more surprising (and also somewhat shocking, as I personally am afraid it might put the whole agreement at risk). Regards Sean Heron 02:49, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am only half joking. If conference participants are partying every night, there could be a story there. Or is it just the journalists? Cheers, --SVTCobra 03:38, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Your second guess was correct. Its some of the journalists and especially the youth delegates of various countries who are heavier on the parties. These last few nights the delegates would have had to be partying from 3am to sometime in the morning when they began with negotiation again and missed out on sleeping... they´re not taking it easy mate (even If I would be happier if they had a greater sense of urgency at times. Sean Heron 03:48, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're on the blog![edit]

I just put up a new post on the Wikinewsie.org blog about your coverage - from some of the comments on the talk pages I'm wondering how many days sleep you'll need to recover. ;-)

Great to see this come off so much better than the G8 with all the transport disruption caused by protesters, I've put a comment on the Wikipedia article hinting they should expand their article based on your coverage. Fingers crossed? Will we get shot down as "not credible"? --Brian McNeil / talk 10:13, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to see your pleased with what I´ve done :D. I must admit I am quite pleased now as well, wheras I wasn't in between. Thanks for the post, I'll be posting tomorrow as well I reckon (I hope I can catch a party this evening ;D ). Sean Heron 10:22, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

thanks[edit]

Thanks for moving my “impressive mess” from WN:RA to its own article. In answer to the question you asked in your edit summary, see my comment at the water cooler. In short, it was on WN:RA because it was original reporting, and I did not take notes, and you are not supposed to do original reporting without taking notes contemporaneously with the event. I was hoping the official transcript would substitute for notes, which would allow it to be published by another user such as you. 69.143.223.157 03:34, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, your welcome :). If you look at some of our other original reporting, you'll see they're usually rather short on the notes side - stating in what manner you obtained the information is usually seen as sufficient (ie "I was at the hearing, on such and such ...") - though I'd prefer seeing something more akin to what the policy calls for, I must admit I've been guilty of similiarly sparce notes (maybe we should change the policy wording to reflect the de facto state - but that's going down another avenue).
Linking transcripts is always welcome though (as others then have a way of checking up on things).
You might have seen there's a notice on the article now that it's been deemed by a contributer here to be "too old" for us as a news sight - I for one think we can be a bit lenient towards local news - it's a bit late here now though, so I'll be taking a closer look/try to do something with it tomorrow. Regards Sean Heron (talk) 21:02, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. just read through the article in more detail - I think if you stated on the articles talk page in which manner you got the info (something along these lines will be fine), that would be great. And may I say a very nice article - for a first contribution definitely impressive :D!
It’s not a first contribution – I just haven't registered, and so am at the mercy of my ISP – but it is my first Original Reporting. About a year ago, I wrote a wikinews shorts about something far more newsworthy but it was based on stuff seen on TV (which I understand is allowed if online or print sources are cited, in which case it is known as a “synthesis article”); anyway, it was not accepted for publication. 69.143.223.157 04:41, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've restored the article, per your request at User talk:DragonFire1024, and moved it to your userspace to get it out of the newsroom. tempodivalse 13:42, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ta :). That's were I wanted it for now. Sean Heron (talk) 13:53, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for puttering so much at the above article. Your alterations have much improved it. It is interesting that the show upside downed the original prepared copy and now it is reverted back to the most important at the top and the lesser to the bottom. Shows usually do "Save the best for last", and news articles the reverse, so I shouldn't have changed to show order time format, but is was easier during the twitter feed, as it was coming so fast. It was a very unique experience to try something like that. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 18:40, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! It came to me later that you probably had been writing stuff up the way it came via Twitter/feed - I bet that was interesting, and pretty fast as well though :). Just needs someone to review it now (it's longish so I suspect it might be avoided a bit - guess I might go for it after all tomorrow morning if it's not done by then). In the future, when reviewing an article, you can add {{under review}} to the article page, instead of making a note on the article talk page. This also helps avoid any edit conflicts that might occur when copyediting an article prior to publishing. Just a suggestion. Cheers, tempodivalse 22:25, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I'd been wondering if there's something like that! Thank you very much, I'll certainly be using it :D ! Sean Heron (talk) 22:31, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Federal Agents[edit]

"I didn't read federal agents in any of the sources (not in the ones I removed either..."

Thanks for getting my very basic story out there. The reason I said federal agents is because pictures showed those arrested by U.S. Secret Service agents. But you are correct, I don't think that was in the sources' prose and they may not have all been federal agents. Calebrw (talk) 14:46, 28 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was happy to :). I was thinking as well that I might expand it a bit, but Tempodivalse already had a little, and of course my time resources are restrained (as are everybodies here of course). Regards Sean Heron (talk) 12:39, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello re Wow[edit]

You did an excellent job on reviewing the French tourists killed in California bus rollover accident. I am amazed that the initial news reports following the time of the accident changed so much the next morning. But by the next morning it was not in the process of investigation and people being treated, rather folks were already through emergency wards and into care units. It would be pretty awful to go the scene as the reporter to try to get the details about a multiple injury tragedy such as that one. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 01:07, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks![edit]

Hey, thanks for the comment, much appreciated-I think I'm going to like it around here! Dottydotdot (talk) 13:36, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: "Clean Energy and Security Act" article[edit]

Hey, I appreciate the kind comments on my page. It is my first article and I was hoping it was going to turn out fairly well. Thanks again, Mr. Man (talk) 21:05, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Busy elsewhere? We understand, but this is a notice of privilege expiry!

Note! Your privileges on English Wikinews have been reduced.

Under the Privilege expiry policy (enacted October 13, 2012) the rights held by your user account have been reduced due to inactivity, or lack of privilege use. You can view your user rights log here.
Point 4 of the Privilege expiry policy provides for fast-tracking reacquisition of privileges. We all understand that real-life commitments can severely curtail the level of commitment you can give to Wikinews; the privilege reduction is in no way intended as a reflection on your past work, or to imply you are unwelcome. The aim in curtailing privileges is to address security risks, and concern that a long period of inactivity means you may not be up-to-date with current policy and practices.

Wikinews Writing contest 2013 is here. :) Please sign up to participate?[edit]

We've created the Wikinews:Writing contest 2013, which will start on April 1 and end on June 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 contest. It would be a really great time for you, as an inactive Wikinews accredited reporter, to renew your credentials by doing some original reporting or conducting interviews. People should be around to interview to prevent a backlog, and several reviewers have access to scoop to make it easier to review any original reporting you do. If you are interested in signing up, please do so on Wikinews:Writing contest 2013/entrants. There is at least one prize on offer for the winner along with the opportunity to earn some barn stars as a way of thanking you for your participation. :D --LauraHale (talk) 10:25, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinewsie cat?[edit]

You know, once you've worked up a list of your articles, we could use it to populate a Wikinewsie category for you; then you could get a neat list of them with DPL ({{topic cat/latest}} can produce a "scrollable" list). --Pi zero (talk) 13:31, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback[edit]

Hello Thank you very much for your feedback. I am very new to Wikinews, and only began writing for it recently as part of a journalism subject at my university. I was disappointed about my article going stale before it could be reviewed, as I was quite happy with it and thought it had a chance of being published. I will keep writing articles though and hopefully have more luck in the future. Thanks again for your feedback and support! Kind regards, TimothyToxUOW (talk)
