- Reason: Accreditation would be helpful to get information from the sources themselves instead of pulling extracts from other news agencies. Could help me net interviews and get info from pr departments of various entities eg. Police departments on the specifics of an accident or to get pictures whether they be surveillance pictures or otherwise. So generally I'm submitting to use the credentials for OR.
- Accomplishments: A list of articles can be found here here. For the most part I'm proud of them all, the first few might be a little off though since I was getting used to the project then. If I had to make a choice I'd say the last four I created today are pretty good in my eyes.

- Seconding this application: I spoke with Bobby122 via IRC in the early hours of this morning, shortly before this Accreditation Request was filed, and suggested that he should apply for Accreditation. Bobby's been with us for over 3 months now, during which time he has turned out or assisted in over 40 articles. I have seen some of his material and I agree totally with his own assessment, that while he was getting used to WN, his work was a bit off, but he has improved significantly in the last few articles he's produced and worked on, and I consider it absolutely right that he should apply for AR status. Consider this a Support as a seconder to this application. BarkingFish (talk) 19:50, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- Support, by-and-large backing what others have said above. I'm sure Bobby is ready to move on to the Social engineering aspects of journalism. Cultivate your contacts, use "Jedi Mind Tricks" to convince them it's important to talk to you, and take detailed notes. --Brian McNeil / talk 08:06, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- Reason: I would like accreditation as to enable me to get interviews for original reporting. (I would like experience in writing articles other than those of a synthesis style).

Comments, questions
[edit]- Who would you pick as a first 'interview target'? Or, would you be seeking to supplement synthesis reports with original materiel? --Brian McNeil / talk 17:09, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Both really, but I would hopefully like to interview (or at least contact) local, state and federal government sources on both national and international issues (I hope accreditation will assist me in doing this). ~YTT T | C 23:45, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Who would be your first choice for someone to interview face to face? --Brian McNeil / talk 17:09, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Most probably a member from the local or state government (easiest to get in contact with). ~YTT T | C 23:46, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- What techniques do you intend to employ to obtain OR? --Brian McNeil / talk 17:09, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I do not intend to make face-to-face contact with my sources but rather use email and telephone in order to contact them (and of course I would compose a transcript for them).~YTT T | C 23:46, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Were you to come across a story which required "On the spot" reporting, for example, an incident such as a road accident or a major fire, would you feel comfortable (based on your previous answer to Brian McNeil) with carrying out face-to-face interviews, and how would you handle them if you did? BarkingFish (talk) 02:49, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes, I would interview people on the scene (as long as circumstances permit). I would most likely find the most appropriate person at the most appropriate time to talk to people involved in the incident. I would ask questions following the 5Ws+H to help compose the article and get the basic facts down (and if I had my phone/other device with me, I would record the conversation and then compose a transcript at a later date for OR notes). ~YTT T | C 04:27, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- Oppose I'd like to see more original reports firstly. Same reason goes for Bobby. I want to see how good are you both getting first-hand information, organizing it, etc. It's not so easy, in my opinion. Diego Grez return fire 23:11, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Totally backed -- The answer given by YTT in response to my question above shows me quite clearly this guy has his head well and truly screwed on. It would be a pleasure to have him as an AR. BarkingFish (talk) 05:16, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Support as has answered as well as can be expected above. Point to note: Picking up the phone is orders of magnitude more effective than email. --Brian McNeil / talk 01:01, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- Reason: I mostly like reporting about politics because everywhere in the world, people need information about current situation of the politics. As of my view, in the present world depend on politics (War, Peace, Foods, Save Environment,). Each and every things effected by political decisions. Basically currently I'm working as freelance writer. I like to meet some responsible persons and gather informations for my articles. Be an Accreditated reporter of Wikinews, it will more easy for me to reach those persons.

- Oppose Accomplishments need to be of things you have achieved here on Wikinews. Write some more articles for now and apply again later. ~YTT T | C 03:49, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes I agreed with you. Since I maintain my own blog, I didn't contribute here. Actually I found WikiNews recently and needed to apply for AR to reach my goals and ambitions. From now as soon as I wrote article to my blog, then I will contribute it here. I promise you all. Lanka
- Oppose, Oppose, Oppose. Your English is atrocious; you've the temerity to call the project "WikiNews"; you obviously do not understand copyright law. No chance in hell you'll get accreditation until you rectify all those faults and prove yourself with several quality articles on Wikinews that aren't cut 'n' pasted from some random blog. --Brian McNeil / talk 06:43, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Yet another oppose vote. "User ID: lanka"? Lol. Plus, the "WikiNews" thing... etc. Now, seriously, if you want accreditation, try to work some more in articles here in Wikinews, don't show us your work in your "own Wikileaks version" for Sri Lanka, or blog, whatever it is, that's not Wikinews material, unless of course... it is newsworthy. Diego Grez return fire 07:06, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Understood!!!!! Thank you very much. Lanka
- The above opposition has been fully vindicated through your initial attempt at an article. Wikinews is not somewhere that will republish you blog musings. You don't seem to know the difference between an editorial and a news article. You think 'mainstream press' is an acceptable source citation. I'll just bet if, and when, someone takes the effort to find your blog, there will be an utterly incompatible copyright statement on it. This application should be withdrawn; learn some of the low-level basics, and prove you can write. You have yet to demonstrate that at all. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:25, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Okay. Thank you. I will work on it and learn properly and apply after I was success. Lanka

Comments, Questions
[edit]- In your opinion, what three (published) articles of yours are you most proud of and why are you proud of them? ~YTT T | C 04:38, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Thank you for the question. I am proud of all my contributions, but I am especially proud of "Obama withdraws from Trinity United Church" because of the reader reaction. I very much enjoyed the comments on the opinion section and was honored to receive praise on my talk page from a reader. Next, I am proud of "Wikinews interviews Gene Amondson, Prohibition Party presidential nominee" because it was my first interview. I was thrilled to actually converse with a presidential candidate. Furthermore, the experience caused me to follow Prohibition Party politics more closely, and after Gene Amondson's death in 2009 (for which I wrote the Wikinews obituary), I decided to work on his wikipedia entry, which I was able to promote to "Good article" status. Lastly, I am proud of "Bob Barr wins the Libertarian Party presidential nomination" because it was my first article on Wikinews and I guess it's part of human nature to reflect fondly on things that are our first.--William S. Saturn (talk) 06:47, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Could you elaborate on your reason for requesting accreditation? On the face of it, if you're already doing something, where does accreditation come into continuing to do it? --Pi zero (talk) 13:43, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I feel that accreditation would help me in contacting more mainstream candidates who may question my legitimacy and/or not respond to queries.--William S. Saturn (talk) 17:22, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]- Neutral Yes, William is an exceptional editor, his original reporting work is excellent, but I am concerned at his civility, and his long periods of inactivity. He had not edited here since June 2010, when he requested username change. He has been sporadically active here in last April, January, July 2009, and 2008. William also tends to... automatically disagree with someone who does not think like him, and because of that I'm not opposing. Oh, and don't forget this! (I know... it's Wikimedia Commons stuff, but anyway). Take this as a comment with points to consider, fellow Wikinewsies. Diego Grez return fire 07:16, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Now that the presidential campaign is starting up, I plan to be active with interviews. For example, I am currently lining up an interview with Fred Karger.--William S. Saturn (talk) 07:37, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Weak support I am leaning towards support here as William has shown his exemplary OR skills and how well he can collect and collate information. I only have one major issue - your long periods of absence. As long as you remain a reliable contributor (and not use AR as a once-off tool) I would be more than happy to give you the nod. ~YTT T | C 11:38, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Support William Saturn has conducted some great interviews, accreditation would help him get them more easily, I'm sure. No concerns. Tempodivalse [talk] 16:02, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- Support; I've far more respect for AR applicants who've shown they'll try OR even without the "credentials". I'm less concerned about sporadic activity, the purpose of credentialling on-project is to give an appearance of authority. How effective this is depends on the recipient. I trust William to understand the difference between social engineering and deception; I'd also be happy to draft any letters of recommendation that may be required. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:54, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Support He's always done great interviews of 3rd party candidates including from the major third parties (Libertarians, Greens and what not) to the random eccentric who think's he'll bring something new to the Oval Office @ 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. --Patrick M (TUFKAAP) (talk) 18:41, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- Accomplishments: Published 3 (+1 in peer) articles on Wikinews, in which two have made the front page, and have contributed several Audio Versions, and have received praise on both talk page and IRC. - Name: Mason Fetterer
- Location: Naples, FL
- Areas of interest: Weather, Sports, Music, Theatre, Movies, Traffic.
- Reason: I would like to contribute to wikinews the many local events in the SWFL area, and many of the music venues such as Grumpy's in Naples Park, and several other venues have discriminatory age restrictions that prevent me from reporting at these locations. Other venues charge rediculous fees such as the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts, and none of the venues allow me to talk to any of the VIPS without a form of press issued identification. I need a press credential to continue contributing events in SWFL to a news source that is not owned by a liberal media group.

[edit]- Support The wikinews community desparately needs someone from SWFL, I have heard of several ufo incidents there, and the government is all hush hush, and we want disclosure, and your accredidation is one step closer. You got a UFO probably no one noticed, and we need as many UFO reports if we want full disclosure. :) --[[User:|Littlealeinn (278587 ) ]]

- Keep, please don't take offense to a minor discussion on sourcing. No one is accusing you of any misconduct as an accredited reporter.--William S. Saturn (talk) 00:54, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep This is way overblown.
There are only two issues here.
Pretty much everyone who does broadcast reports doesn't give the detailed reporter's notes they should; would I like to see everyone do better, yes, but that doesn't bear on anyone's accreditation, let alone specifically on yours.- Mattisse is having trouble understanding OR, and unfortunately came across in an abrasive way, which is no reflection on you.
- --Pi zero (talk) 01:10, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm completely striking the whole first point. Which leaves Mattisse coming across abrasively (and of course also me worrying too much about Mattisse and not enough about the quality of your notes). --Pi zero (talk) 02:21, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Fully support retention. Dendodge, you did absolutely nothing wrong. You have been the victim of petty pedantry by others who have not actually contributed Original Reporting. Your broadcast report notes were quite acceptable, and the issue with use of machine translation was blown out-of-proportion. You, wisely, limited such to extremely short quotes as-opposed to using a complete machine translation. The somewhat personal attack against the integrity of your work for such deserves an apology. --Brian McNeil / talk 07:29, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- Reason: I've become deeply enamoured with journalism by-and-large in recent years and consider it to be one of the most noble of all pursuits. I work in public education and want to give to the project while using it to teach students the importance of gathering facts while maintaining a neutral mindset.
- Accomplishments: I've had approx. 8 articles published on Wikinews...3 recently landed on the main page. I place heavy emphasis on OR and quite literally stumbled into a big scoop recently re: Texas wildfires. Learning proper style, active voice etc. etc. has not been an easy process, but I love the philosophy of "quality over quantity" here....it's a good thing. I've noted that respect will be given here, but it must be earned....tenacity and humility are core recquisites for success here. I've also had about 4 articles published in "The Linking Ring" magazine [published by The International Brotherhood of Magicians]...and was a proofreader for that mag for 1 year. I also co-authored an article for a free eMag entitled, "Stone Cold Magic Magazine". I teach "Film and Media" at a public middle school in Texas.

[edit]- Name: Tom Morris
- Location: near Royal Tunbridge Wells, East Sussex, United Kingdom
- Areas of interest: Politics, science, education, culture, law.
- Reason: I have started down the road of original reporting and contacted some potential interviewees. It might be easier to get press passes and interviews if I'm accredited. If this happens more, I will also consider getting a UK mobile phone number specifically for making and receiving Wikinews-related calls.
- Accomplishments: I've published 19 articles so far including UK Parliament to vote on tuition fee rise on Thursday, a featured article. Nobody has had any issues with the neutrality of any of my articles.

- You haven't actually had OR published yet, right? My only hesitation (seriously, only hesitation) in supporting this —enthusiastically— is that I'd like an accredited reporter to have been through the whole OR process including being reviewed/published. So I'm going to wait (eagerly) for that before supporting. --Pi zero (talk) 15:51, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- I've now had two articles published with OR: Occupation in London enters fifth day and Proms performance by Israel Philharmonic Orchestra disrupted. —Tom Morris (talk) 13:14, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- Neutral You've done some good stuff....you really have...and that matters...it does. But, there's no reason in the world why a person has to be accredited to engage in OR.....ya' just jump out there and do it, man! There's kind of an unwritten rule here that OR is HIGHLY VALUED, (I mean, heck....it is a news source). Nonetheless, I think you've got a' lot of potential, but I'm just not sure where to stand right now. --Bddpaux (talk) 15:26, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Support. Synthesis work presented by Tom gives me confidence to support accreditation. Takes on serious stories, knows the tools of newscraft to the extent some OR encouragement is merited. --Brian McNeil / talk 20:59, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- Oppose The fact you're applying for accreditation when you haven't even had anything reviewed here let alone published, let alone OR published, reflects your unfamiliarity with this project. Wikinews is not Wikipedia (the projects are different on many levels). And we are not familiar with you. Accreditation is serious stuff; this is quite premature. --Pi zero (talk) 11:47, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- strongly oppose as accreditation on Wikinews is intended for those who have shown knowledge of the significant differences in contributing here. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:17, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- Oppose -- but by my calculations....you did have 1 article published recently....so, kudos on that! Hang in there! Do a few more articles, then come back soon, OK? --Bddpaux (talk) 18:02, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- Oppose You joined here less than two months ago, and yes....you've contributed some.....great(seriously)! But, you'd be surprised what you can accomplish even if you don't have accreditation. I think you could show that you can "grind it out" a bit longer....and then apply for accreditation. --Bddpaux (talk) 22:06, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
