Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Hello[edit]

Hi, Tyrol5. I was just wondering- are you a reviewer, administrator or contributor here? It's just a question, not to be taken as offensive.

--Shankarnikhil88 (talk) 13:45, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! I should let you know, it has been raised at WN:AAA that it may no longer be needed for the archive conventions to say that anyway, since there is an automatic list on that page now. So it may soon be that you don't need to after all. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 16:43, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Myself[edit]

Since you voted oppose on me,, I have since created more articles. Are you still against me or nuetral. I doubt that you would support. --Nascar1996 03:19, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for changing your vote, even it is now support or oppose, I just know that it is accurate. --Nascar1996 14:00, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please note that the style guide says that dates should always be in M, D, Y format, so I changed 19 August 2010 to August 19, 2010. Thanks, fetch·comms 23:16, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer[edit]

I've nominated you at WN:FRRFP. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 13:29, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I promoted you. Have fun! Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 19:35, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Tyrol5 (talk) 20:05, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. There's a template which, although impersonal, has all the links... but I forget which it is. Doesn't matter much, I'm confident you don't need to go over that old ground anyway. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 20:12, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer Promotion[edit]

I have promoted you to the Wikinews:Reviewer class, entrusting you with the ability to mark revisions of articles as sighted (review). Please take a moment to read:

You are welcome to use {{User Wikinews reviewer}}.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask for help on my talk page, and thank you for contributing to Wikinews!

Diego Grez return fire 21:23, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Although I am familiar with these policies, having this template here will serve as a good quick reference. Tyrol5 (talk) 21:24, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, you're quick! Firstly, I didn't promote you; Secondly, I wished to congratulate you for this! :-) --Diego Grez return fire 21:25, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As for your first point, that's obvious (BRS did and you're not an admin). As for your second, Thanks! Tyrol5 (talk) 21:27, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Closing Accreditation Requests[edit]

Hi. I'm just dropping this to you to let you know that, although your reason was correct, technically you shouldn't be closing accreditation requests. That is normally done by an Administrator, since it grants a form of authority to the user for external reporting. I have endorsed your recent closure, but would ask in future that you leave closures to administrative staff, please :) Thanks, BarkingFish (talk) 01:59, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

HotCat[edit]

A neat little trick — when adding several categories at once, if you use + to start adding the second one before you click Ok on the first one, that puts HotCat into a mode where you can add all of them in a single edit. --Pi zero (talk) 13:54, 26 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ha! Now I feel like an idiot! Anyways, thanks, this makes it so much easier! My logic always told me that there had to be a function like that somewhere (I just couldn't figure out where!) Tyrol5 (talk) 14:04, 26 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Space Shuttle[edit]

We already have an article I started earlier on this Space Shuttle Discovery successfully launched. I suggest merging the two? JoshuaZ (talk) 22:52, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. Moving over details to your article now. JoshuaZ (talk) 23:09, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me. I'm listening to the press conference now to see if there are any other details. JoshuaZ (talk) 23:22, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not sight revisions without first making sure the article passes a peer review. Regards, — μ 23:25, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
They are talking about in the conference a minor issue with some foam coming off but looks like it won't be a problem. I'm not sure if we should mention that in the article until we have more info. JoshuaZ (talk) 23:38, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tyrol5, just about the sentence "..Discovery and the crew of STS-133 are scheduled to spend just under two weeks " in the article "Space Shuttle Discovery launches on final mission". The point is about: "..just under two weeks". What about deleting "under"? It would seem pleonastic! Thanks a lot in advance! 82.49.29.215 (talk) 10:53, 4 March 2011 (UTC) Thanks a lot in advance![reply]

I did change it, although not quite for your reasoning. The mission has been extended by one day twice already, so it would be inaccurate to say "just under two weeks". At any rate, thanks for bringing the sentence to my attention! Tyrol5 (talk) 19:14, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Tonight" on the main page[edit]

Re [1], just a reminder that WN:ML now says "Please remember to not use time-sensitive phrasing in Main Page leads, such as "yesterday" or "today" – the leads are sometimes around for several days after publication, and the phrasing becomes out of date quickly." Regards, Bencherlite (talk) 11:21, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I missed that while publishing. Thanks for letting me know, Tyrol5 (talk) 19:20, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also[edit]

Also, thank you for the work you made in contributing to your article. I am grateful for your efforts. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 09:52, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem at all. Pleasure working with you. Tyrol5 (talk) 19:22, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Admin status granted[edit]

Congratulations, acting in the name of, and on the advice of the Cabal of Wikinews Inc I hereby have made you a admin! You have volunteered for boring housekeeping activities which normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops basically can't do anything: They cannot delete pages arbitarily (only obvious junk like "jklasdfl,öasdf JOSH IS GAY"), they cannot protect pages in an edit war they are involved in, they cannot ban users except in cases of obvious vandalism or excessive edit warring (24-hour "cool down" ban). What they can do is delete junk as it appears, ban vandals, remove pages that have been listed on Deletion requests for more than a week, protect pages when asked to by other members, and help keep the few protected pages there are up to date.

Note that almost everything you can do can be undone, so don't be too worried about making mistakes. You will find more information on Wikinews:Administrators, please take a look before experimenting with your new powers. Drop me a message if there are any questions or if you want to stop being a sysop (could it be?). Have fun! :) Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 11:26, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Tyrol5 (talk) 16:26, 25 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

Good night Tyrol5. I feel slightly concerned about two things: firstly, the way you blocked Magnifying Glass (talk · contribs); in these situations, I'd recommend just blocking access to the talk page, since it is about a case of long-term abuse, I've had to deal with Kittiesonfire's socks several times, including once, I was travelling and my connection was crappy! But anyway, I blocked all of his socks, back on March 1. Well, the second point is: you're one of those users who leaves the project for some time without saying anything, and then come back for a sudden activity; I did not comment on this on your request for adminship, but I wanted to point out this to you now, I hope you don't leave the project after one of these sudden and unannounced retirements, or wikibreaks! Cheers, and congratulations with your new trabajo! アンパロ Io ti odio! 02:46, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. In these cases it is also convenient to simply delete their talk pages, since it becomes some kind of trolling playground. アンパロ Io ti odio! 02:50, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Diego. I was unfamiliar with that sock situation, and merely blocked the user on the grounds of an admission of socking (obviously a trolling attempt). For your second point, please rest assured that I do not plan to leave the project anytime soon; this is merely due to the fact that I devote most of my free time to WP, but will go on "editing sprees" over here when stuff needs done. And thank you for your congrats. All the best, Tyrol5 (talk) 12:28, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

reviewer matters[edit]

Hey Tyrol5. I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting my reviewer nomination, and also for closing it and giving me the privileges. :) Cheers, Ragettho (talk) 02:40, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem; you deserved it! Good luck and happy editing/reviewing! All the best, Tyrol5 (talk) 11:41, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Template for Sudan[edit]

Do you think that South Sudan should have its own template? It doesn't seem right in South Sudan gains independence to have Sudan's template there. Regards, Mattisse (talk) 17:51, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As a matter of fact, I just created one. See Template:South Sudan. Tyrol5 (talk) 17:52, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great. It's beautiful. I love that flag! Mattisse (talk) 17:57, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and I have to admit that I do like South Sudan's flag better than Sudan's! Tyrol5 (talk) 17:59, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You still around??--Bddpaux (talk)

I am, albeit not as much as I'd like to be or used to be, primarily lurking around here-and-there. I've been spending most of my free time over at Wikipedia, so maybe I'll re-invest some of my time back over here in the near future (don't hold your breath, though). Writing a proper article, for me, involves the better part of an hour's work--and it's rare that I have both the time and the opportunity (a fresh story of specific interest that's still fresh when I do have time to write an article). Rest assured that despite my apparent inactivity, I've not left the project and continue lurk around when I'm not editing or logging actions. Thanks for stopping by and regards, Tyrol5 (talk) 21:22, 26 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You know, with plenty of time to mull it over, and then actually seeing it with the paragraphs reversed, I thought, why? It's been fine the way it was written, which is after all chronological — first how many people tuned in, then something said during it, and finally what people said about it afterwards — and it was in that form that another comment on the opinions page called it the only unbiased article about the debate on the internet.

So I'm gonna stick with my initial impression of the article when I reviewed it (not allowing my own self-doubts to get the better of me) — I thought, Writing a neutral article about that debate is a challenge, but I do believe Tyrol5 has managed it. :-) --Pi zero (talk) 21:40, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comment and, thinking about the article myself now, the sequential order of the article is quite logical (if I may say so myself; although, I must confess that did not cross my mind as I wrote the article, but it may have happened subconsciously). But, I digress. Thanks for looking at it and publishing it--and defending it! Tyrol5 (talk) 22:34, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request for reviewing and other assistance[edit]

Hi. Next week is the start of the IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships and two Wikinewies will be attending to cover the para-alpine skiing ahead of the 2014 Winter Paralympics . This is part of an effort outlined at Wikinews:IPC Alpine Ski World Championships. Immediately following this event, there will be a Meetup in Barcelona where Wikinews, the Paralympics and efforts to similar sport coverage will be discussed. At the moment, there are only two active reviewers on a daily basis. Demonstrating an ability to get reviews for these types of events done quickly is important for Wikinews credibility and gaining access to these types of events. I would really appreciate it if you could sign up on the IPC World Championship page to review, promote articles published during this period, assist in translating these articles into another language or attend the meetup in Barcelona. Thanks. --LauraHale (talk) 09:33, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinews Writing contest 2013 is here. :) Please sign up to participate?[edit]

We've created the Wikinews:Writing contest 2013, which will start on April 1 and end on June 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 contest. Unlike the previous version, points are available for people who conduct reviews. (With a University of Wollongong class currently contributing articles, extra assistance is appreciated at this time.) It presents a great incentive for you to renew your reviewing chops, contribute some original reporting not being done by the main stream media, and write some synthesis articles on topics that could use more attention. People should be around to review to prevent a backlog if you just want to write, and several reviewers have access to scoop to make it easier to review any original reporting you do. If you are interested in signing up, please do so on Wikinews:Writing contest 2013/entrants. There is at least one prize on offer for the winner along with the opportunity to earn some barn stars as a way of thanking you for your participation. :D --LauraHale (talk) 10:37, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for stopping by, Laura. I don't devote nearly as much time to Wikinews as I'd like to or used to, but I might consider signing up if for no other reason to get more involved again. Soyuz TMA-08M is slated to launch to the International Space Station tomorrow, so perhaps that'll be a good start. Thanks again and take care, Tyrol5 (talk) 23:34, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, cool. And we have a Category:Soyuz programme and everything. :-)  --Pi zero (talk) 00:44, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. I've posted the article but will probably wait until after docking at about 2:32 UTC (about an hour and a half from this posting) to request review. Tyrol5 (talk) 01:09, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wow again![edit]

....seems like only yesterday you got one of these for 37 articles, and now you're up to 52! --Bddpaux (talk) 21:39, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I remember writing my first article like it was last week (and it's been almost three years now!). Take care, Tyrol5 (talk) 01:30, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just starting to review this.

Um. I'm not sure (yet, anyway) quite what to make of the remark on the talk page. If there's broadcast reporting in the article, you need to claim that and provide detailed reporter's notes (we really need to not start down a slippery slope on that). If there's only a little of such stuff in the article, and it's feasible to simply excise it and publish, that's probably what I'll do. If not... well, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. --Pi zero (talk) 16:43, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Published, with only one detail cut. --Pi zero (talk) 19:05, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that, Pi zero. Not quite sure what I was thinking when I put that note up. I'll be more thorough next time. No harm intended and thanks for reviewing/publishing. Tyrol5 (talk) 00:46, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I enjoyed the article. --Pi zero (talk) 01:00, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

NYT[edit]

I just noticed, you used an NYT source for that article. I can't access NYT articles; they're paywalled for me. --Pi zero (talk) 02:53, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi zero: Ah, sorry about that. I used the NYT mostly for bio info, which I found in a USA Today timeline of his life (which, hopefully, you can access to verify). Thanks, Tyrol5 (talk) 02:58, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Cool; thx. --Pi zero (talk)
The number one source to avoid these days due to paywall-hazard is NYT. Second is WSJ. The third that comes to mind is The Australian, but since even the writers in Australia don't use that too often it's less of an issue. I don't specifically recall ever having such a problem with any news site other than those three. --Pi zero (talk) 11:36, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Pi zero: Sounds good; I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for reviewing and publishing! Tyrol5 (talk) 14:31, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Bddpaux: I am! I've been fairly busy IRL and spend most of my wiki time over at Wikipedia. But I do lurk and keep up with the goings-on over here. Maybe I'll write an article or something over the holidays. Thanks for stopping by, Tyrol5 (talk) 16:51, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Just a side note that live chat via IRC is available to help contibutors talk, both about news being written and about news they've spotted elsewhere. Perhaps, if you might wish to join it and stay on the chat for a few days, you might meet a few new people. Might help with staying connected with those who are still around. -Gryllida (talk) 04:50, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Temporary change to article length[edit]

Hello. As a reviewer, this note is just to let you know we are implementing a trial from February 1 to April 30 to encourage more articles to be published per the outcome of a current proposal. The minimum requirements for article length will be one paragraph of at least a hundred words. At the end of the trial the requirements will return to normal (3 paragraphs etc) and there will be an evaluation discussion about the trial. Happy reviewing! [24Cr][talk] 23:08, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary change to freshness[edit]

Hello. As a reviewer, this note is just to let you know we are implementing a trial from July 4 to October 4 to enable more articles to be reviewed per the outcome of a current proposal. The freshness window is being extended to about five to seven days. At the end of the trial the window will continue to be at 5-7 days while we discuss whether to adopt the change permanently or not. Happy reviewing! [24Cr][talk] 17:32, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. We've created Wikinews:Writing contest 2023, which will start on February 1 and end on May 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 and 2013 contests. As a reviewer who has recently been inactive, it would be a great time for you to rejoin. If you are interested in signing up, please do so at Wikinews:Writing contest 2023#Entrants and create a category for the articles you submit. Heavy Water (talk) 04:19, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmmmm......[edit]

You still around these parts?--Bddpaux (talk) 21:18, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for checking-in. Yes, indeed regularly lurking (and reading). As you'll probably see, I spend much of my "wiki" time at Wikipedia, but do continue to pop in. Tyrol5 (talk) 22:05, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your (in)activity as a reviewer[edit]

Hello again. As I see, your last review log was April 2021, at least two years ago. Per WN:PEP, your lack of reviewer activity for two or more years would lead you to loss of your reviewer permission rights. Of course, you could've used the Easy Peer Review tool, whose actions aren't recorded in the Review log, within the past two years. If you also haven't used the gadget tool within the time frame, then a request that you no longer be a reviewer may more likely be possible. George Ho (talk) 11:24, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the courtesy ping, George. Much appreciated, and certainly appreciate and understand the inactivity. As I indicated to Bddpaux above, I remain a lurker, though an admittedly infrequent logged-action recorder. I'll look for opportunity to change that over the coming weeks/months. Tyrol5 (talk) 22:11, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey again. This is your second notice about your reviewer tools. Since the last notice, I've yet to see your recent review log. I thought about having your tools reviewed at WN:FR/RFP, but then I'd hate to see the tools taken away from you. What must I do? --George Ho (talk) 09:27, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Quite right, George. Thanks again. You musn't do anything -- I must make myself a bit more useful with the tools as time allows, as lean as the personnel on this project is. Tyrol5 (talk) 13:49, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back[edit]

Good to see a careful reviewer. Please note last year we extended the freshness deadline to five to seven days, in light of struggling to get reviews in time. We also, earlier in 2022, lowered WN:LENGTH's minimum threshold to one paragraph with 100 words. And I guess you know, from Pi, we've begun to treat post-publish moves as something to be avoided unless absolutely necessary (with the consequence of having more pressure to decide on an entirely unproblematic headline before). "Lean" is a good descriptor. Often, for a month or so, I'll be the only one reviewing anything. Sometimes we go a few weeks without any active admins. Then again, it's been worse. Thanks, very much, for that nice note. I do recall the freshness update, and indeed you can bet it is the very first thing I double-checked before undertaking (as well as the length requirement). Thanks for the reminder also regarding the post-publish moves; much as I so hate to disturb Pi's peaceful eternal rest, I will admit I very selfishly wanted to sneak that in, for my own peace of mind, though it is ordinarily something I am very disinclined towards, for the various reasons Pi would be quick to remind me of were he with us here. (P.S., I am generally more active on Wikipedia, so I can usually be found there (and will see cross-wiki pings from here over there as well)). Tyrol5 (talk) 14:16, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I agree with the move itself. I moved the article up to the second lead because to me it makes sense to place something days newer than others ahead of those, even if it is shorter and all-synthesis. Heavy Water (talk) 16:15, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sticking around?[edit]

Hi Tyrol, I think you have worked on WN before? Anyways will you be active for now? Just wondering. Thanks. SkruhKidd (talk) 02:56, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for cleaning up the past stale and abandoned news, along with not news related and spam! It's been awhile since the Newsroom was cleaned. SkruhKidd (talk) 03:08, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Don't find much time for newswriting/reviewing these days, but brushing out the cobwebs is easy enough. Tyrol5 (talk) 03:47, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. SkruhKidd (talk) 03:49, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For your information, we have been getting spam about this guy for a few months; whoever is behind it, quite probably Ali Zulfikar Zahedi, evades global locks. A couple of the previous accounts I can think of off the top of my head: Zulfikarsamiaaddrian, Zulfikar1973. (Considering never assume I think they've worn out their welcome.) Perhaps it's time for a new abuse filter? Heavy Water (talk) 05:59, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Zapped it, thanks. Duly noted. When I next get a chance, or this guy pops up again, I may well get over to the interface and set up a new one. Tyrol5 (talk) 21:57, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
