2018 ArbCom[edit]

Just like last year, I'd like to nominate you for ArbCom this year. Are you willing to accept the nomination, BRS? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Acagastya (talkcontribs)

I'd second that. Gryllida (talk) 06:06, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

I'm honestly flattered by your ongoing faith in me, have ended up taking a particularly looooong gap from being here. Assuming I do indeed end up spending as much time back here as I hope to, well, I'd be willing to accept a nomination sometime in the future. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 21:45, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
Well I hope you say "yes" for this time. I would email you that time.

Growing Wikinews to counter the Balkanization of the body politic[edit]

Hello:

I'm asking all the Wikinews administrators for their thoughts on how Wikinews and the Wikimedia Foundation more generally might respond more effectively to the challenges to democracy and world peace that many people perceive in the rise of the xenophobic right in the US, Europe, India, the Philippines, and elsewhere. I've proposed a workshop on this subject for WikiConference North America, October 18-21, and I've engaged User:Pi zero and User:Gryllida in discussing this at Wikinews:Water cooler/proposals#Retaining contributors with compatible projects. Pi zero and Gryllida think the numbers I scraped from meta:Wikinews are wrong. That may be, but I don't think it changes the fundamental question.

I hope you will contribute your thoughts to this discussion -- both online and hopefully also at WikiConference North America.

Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 01:17, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Wikinews is neither an army nor a police force. Nor should it be. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 01:24, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Doctor Livingstone, I presume?[edit]

Welcome back. Long time no see. --Pi zero (talk) 23:06, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Good to be here :) BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 23:07, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Article[edit]

Sorry I edited it, didn't notice sign at top. Reverted, hope this is OK, Qwerty number1 (talk) 21:20, 21 December 2018 (UTC).

Absolutely fine! Thanks for dropping by and explaining, though. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 21:30, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

That Indian article[edit]

Seems weird that the group, which was going to the Sunday mass was attacked on Monday. Can you fix that?
117.222.93.88 (talk) 17:17, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Hopefully. I'm working up to doing some big work on the Gatwick piece. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 17:30, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Bangalore ComicCon[edit]

has been archived. --Pi zero (talk) 07:15, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Now that I've got a brief window on a real computer, I'll go out and nominate. Thank you, incidentally, for that mammoth review on Gatwick. Glad it was all worth it and we were able to get a broad and detailed item into the archive. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 17:13, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Review possibility?[edit]

Any chance you could review crime and law/politics and conflicts article?
•–• 16:26, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

@Acagastya: Right now? Not really. I've not got much access to non-mobile devices right now and it's hampering severely my ability to do much here. In the longer term? Sure. I've got a new machine arriving (which I should have bought years ago...) hopefully within the next few days. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 16:51, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
No, it was for today. Let's see how things work out. At least you can copyedit, hopefully. By the way, are you on IRC?
•–• 17:03, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
Also, could you tell me if there was any issue with using Daily Sabah as the source? Amgine had warned me about Turkish sources.
•–• 17:08, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
I'm not at the moment; I may be late late late tonight (UTC). Well, as you say, we'll see how it goes and keep our fingers crossed. Daily Sabah... That's state owned? Maybe not. It's definitely a propaganda rag and should be regarded as such. I'm not saying you cannnot ever use it. Just be extremely cautious about it and be aware that Turkey is not well-known for its press freedoms. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 17:10, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Happy New Year[edit]

I was happy to see your latest excellent article. Welcome back. I am not exactly active myself, but I do hope to find more time to contribute. This may seem exceedingly pedantic, but if you have time in the coming days or weeks, could you look at Wikinews_talk:Style_guide#Song_titles. It is basically about music and the formatting of songs and albums. It is my contention they should have distinct styling so that "Born to Run" can be easily distinguished from Born to Run, for example. Cheers, --SVTCobra 22:05, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Thank you! It's good to see you too. If by my latest article you mean Gatwick, I was only the last to work on writing it, and the vast majority of the credit goes elsewhere.
Nothing wrong with pedantry, and recognising it as such will get you far. I'm waiting on a new laptop so atm I'm on mobile for the most part. When I get back to proper editing I'll go through that and in general look at whatever policy etc discussions are going. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 23:27, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
(Btw, speaking of policy etc, Wikinews:Newsworthiness is now a guideline.) --Pi zero (talk) 00:00, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
No, I meant the Mei Chen article. I do believe that's yours. I know my request is a 'reach' of sorts, however, you were cited as the roadblock for what I saw as a simple correction to WN:SG. Pedantry hasn't gotten me very far, recognized or not, Cheers, --SVTCobra 00:09, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
Ah yes, that is me :) I didn't feel it rose to the level of excellent, but thanks! Well, more like pedantry is a slow mover on a news site, especially because if we decide to change it becomes something to get fixed in the archive. So it's a slow and steady and, well, pedantic process. ;). But yeah, I'll take a look when I can and see what I can contribute. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 00:32, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Sighting edits[edit]

I made some edits today: most of them requires sighting, and maybe another set of eyeballs. Would you be able to have a look? Also, let me know once you are on IRC. Needty ask something, not related to enwn.
•–• 10:41, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

@Acagastya: if nobody's beaten me to it I'll take a look now. Should be on IRC within the next half hour, touch wood. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 16:31, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
You got disconnected from IRC. Mind joining #wikinewsie?

Scottish Borders minibus crash kills one, injures 23[edit]

You might have noticed: it is published. Could have published on Sunday, but was late by a minute :-/ Well, there are some modifications which you or @Pi zero: would have to sight.
•–• 00:27, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

I did, yes, and thanks for that! BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 00:29, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Indian parliament's lower house passes Triple Talaq bill[edit]

I know I have kept you up all night for this, but it is stale, and if you think it has lost its originality, that would be okay. It is to be discussed in the upper house today: and I can write about it. I am sorry to keep you waiting for so long. I leave the decision up to you.
•–• 00:41, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Also, I must mention, when it is late night articles, I assume reviewer has no problem reviewing it, because I have worked with pi a lot, and I managed to forget that you are in a different time zone. I should be careful about it. It may take some time, but I am sure we can figure out what works for us.
•–• 00:41, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
If there's such a big, clear focus tomorrow I might mark it not ready then (but I will continue looking over it in the hopes it will help me review the new version very quickly). Don't worry about the timezone thing, I'm not working tomorrow and often when that happens I stay up very late. :) (Also, I am back to a real computer, so I'll see you and PiZ on IRC very soon). BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 00:49, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
not a "big clear focus" for Monday. It was to be introduced today, but may not have the voting done today. I am not sure, I just came home. Also regarding timings…let's discuss that in real time, on iRC, later tonight.

Regarding Cricket[edit]

Hello, I recently created a new post of Cricket: India beats Australia by 137 runs in third test match.this is cricket news, this is not a disputed post, this post should not be deleted, thanks(Mr.Mani Raj Paul (talk) 07:15, 2 January 2019 (UTC))

Freshness is a core policy, I'm afraid. Even if I didn't agree with it (and I do) it would be out of my hands. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 14:05, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Animals[edit]

We also recently set up Category:Orangutans. --Pi zero (talk) 20:35, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

Unloved image brought into use (I am aware of the watermark needing cropped off the penguins, will try and get round to doing that for Commons, but it was too gorgeous a pic to pass up). BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 00:54, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Review[edit]

Any chance you could review a bunch of articles tonight? And, any chance you can join #wikinewsie?
103.254.128.86 (talk) 15:14, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

There's a chance, yes :P I'll probably be quite active tonight. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 15:19, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
I will finish writing the review for Mary Poppins Returns and get started. Ping me if you join the channel.

Trump says he may put US into state of emergency to build border wall[edit]

I have submitted some changes, which I feel are greatly needed to clarify that Trump saying he can do something does not particularly indicate that he can. --Pi zero (talk) 03:02, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

Sighted, though my understanding is he can budget for the wall under it, just that the question of whether he can declare it in the first place is questionable. I gotta say, I'm already saturated with US politics. BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 09:23, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
Most of us in the US have been saturated with it for at least two years. Alas, it doesn't go away (indeed, one could argue that wishing it would contributed to the current situation). --Pi zero (talk) 13:59, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
In fact, I've submitted another set of changes, including a rename, because acagastya pointed out (off-wiki) the headline needed improvement (and then I screwed up the rename and had to make a second rename to fix it). So as of this moment there are another three edits pending. --Pi zero (talk) 14:15, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
I gotta say, my main takeaway from this review has been that I should, at least for the time being, stay away from reviews of US politics altogether. Too many subtleties until I'm more in the swing of it again. Anyway, changes sighted (not by me). BRS (Talk) (Contribs) 14:45, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
