Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Write your first article for Wikinews!

Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it!

Two things[edit]

First, although I really do appreciate your intent, with your further work on the zoo fire article, I'm reviewing it — with an {{under review}} template at the top that requests folks avoid editing it directly, instead leaving a note on the article talk page.

Second, I'd wanted to alert you to a possible difficulty, that new contributors to Wikinews sometimes get into: submitting a second article before getting feedback on the first. The first article is usually a massive learning experience, and there are apt to be problems that come up during review (it's very unusual for a first article to pass on the first review). Oops. I didn't mean to rename the article without leaving a redirect; that can cause problems, if somebody else is editing the article at the time, as the wiki software then won't warn them that the article has been moved when they go to save their edits. Article creation forms[edit]

An input box where one can type in an article title and then click a button, typically labeled "create an page". There's one like that on page WN:WRITE. (I tried to think where else we have them; we often say they're "scattered around the site", after all. There's one at the top of this page, Howdy message, right-hand tab. Ahhhh... I think I used it before, cannot remember if I did it with the Prague one. Pretty sure it worked. Unsure how I could have done it otherwise. Is it an issue with me doing it like that? A general observation[edit]

A couple of things to keep in mind.

  • Each article is a learning experience; yes, the first article is generally the single biggest hurdle, but there will continue to be more things to learn with each article, that it'll be easier for everyone if one learns before making some mistake repeatedly.
  • We have limited review capacity. Depending on circumstances, reviewing may take longer, perhaps a lot longer, than writing it did; and often (though not always) I'm the only active reviewer doing full reviews. Especially well-written articles are lots easier to review, and when I'm in good form I can maybe review two shortish well-written articles per day. (Lately, alas, I'm often not in such good form.)

Six members of illegal neo-Nazi group sentenced in England[edit]

There are some minor, and some major issues with the article. Minor ones like the style of date (WN:DATE) and number (WN:Number) are certain things which once noted, you can remember for ever. However, the way to form the article, and citing Wikipedia--that is something I can not fix as an independent reviewer, and you would have to get that done. Oh, by the way: did you read the inverted pyramid structure?

WN:PYRAMID might be something you should go through. While I appreciate your enthusiasm, and frankly, I can't seem to recall any newbie submitting articles at this rate before, I would advice you to go through the edit history, and also reading the WN:SG, little by little. You will learn a lot by writing, and observing how the reviewers or other editors handle certain things, however, if you keep on writing and not see the edit history, it may turn out to be very difficult to improve.

Gatwick[edit]

Since coming back to this project I've been pushing out some articles in order to get Wikinews some degree of output for the present. I'm painfully aware that a byproduct is the Gatwick story you've been working so hard on is liable to go stale. Again. Don't despair, though; I think the material already there is a really solid foundation and with the situation continuing to update there's still plenty of scope to produce and publish a really great article. I hope either tomorrow, or Wednesday after I finish work, to roll up my sleeves and get stuck into helping it be the best it possibly can. After all, the amount of effort you've put into this one really does deserve to be properly recognised. Some things to work on:

  • I realize "use your own words" can be frustrating to hear, but, it's one of those things that gets easier with practice (which I say after a lot of practice). You want to develop a writing technique that, amongst other things, doesn't involve copying and then modifying. (I really do need to find a way to complete the essay I've been writing for several years on how to do this sort of thing.)
  • For news, the more substance the better. On a death, some quotes are good and can be illuminating, but only go so far. I remarked about this in my review comments. Ask, what is the most important information about this event, that we might be able to report to our readers to help them be more informed about it? We use, as our basic house style, an inverted pyramid, so the more important information is, the earlier in the article it should be.
  • There are, of course, background tasks you'll get the hang of after a while; like wikilinks, categories.

"Bin Salman, aged 33, is not trying to buy Manchester United, according to Saudi Arabia. Allegations have emerged, despite the owners saying they do not want to sell, that the Saudi prince wants to buy the club."

This seems lacking a bit of context. The 5Ws are not fully elaborated. Perhaps consider this version instead:

Saudi Arabia denied rumours of Mohammad bin Salman, the Crown Prince of the country, wanting to buy Manchester United, an association football club based in Manchester, England. Turki al-Shabanah, the media minister of Saudi Arabia, has expressed this denial on the official Twitter account this Monday.

In October 2018, the owners of the club said they did not want to sell."

If you could find the Twitter link it would also be great.

I think it may be difficult to read a paragraph that has a 'he' in the first sentence. Perhaps replace it with the name or the position name of the person instead?

The usual discretionary period for freshness is 2–3 days after the event. Here the event took place on the 18th, so two days after would be the 20th and three days after would be the 21st, today. We generally interpret it in terms of calendar days, which means a reviewer might choose to count it fresh without raising eyebrows as long as it's still Thursday UTC — for another hour and three quarters. --Pi zero (talk) 22:15, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It has been several weeks after you signed up for the 'welcome a bit' notification. Does it work for you? Did it help you with editing new drafts? Do you wish to continue receiving the notifications?

This month I have identified a bug in DynamicPageList extension, which prevents me from excluding archived articles from the initial results. This has been addressed by suppressing the first notifications continue to work as expected.

I see you may have received some notifications twice, in the case when one article belongs to two categories which are interesting to you. I hope to fix this by the end of this month.

Thanks, for this suggestion. I was originally using personal talk pages because the new messages on them are a lot easier to discover. Thank you. Firstly I am working on avoiding duplicate notifications. If this works well I will make a release of version 2 this month, and your suggestion may be included into version 3 next month (I will need to sort the suggestions and decide which ones of them go to version 3 and which ones go to version 4). I will keep you updated.

Technical trick[edit]

When leaving a template on a user talk page and signing it (such as {{howdy}}, or {{spamblock}}, or the like), you can put the template and the sig on the same line, but then don't put a space between them. (welcome a bit) bug fix available for testing[edit]

Hi Qwerty number1

You wanted to easier remove the notifications from 'welcome a bit' tool in the case when they are delivered to your personal talk page. A script is available now to facilitate this. If you add 

importScript('User:Gryllida/js/wab-talk.js');

to your Special:MyPage/common.js, then at the end of each section which was added by 'welcome a bit' there will be a large blue word 'Remove'. It prompts to delete the corresponding section in two clicks. Please let me know how it works for you, and whether you would like to see any improvements.

Oops, bug[edit]

Hi Qwerty number1

Unfortunately in the case you start from the top, the 'Remove' button was working incorrectly: its counter was not updating, and it removed several legitimate sections from your talk page. This bug has now been fixed, and the script should be working correctly now.

I've restored these legitimate sections, as well. Please check whether I've restored anything that you wanted removed.

?Didn't notice this, but I trust you. I was thinking, yep, I am really picky, that the 'REMOVE' is very long on the title part for the section. It may just be an issue with tablets and phones, but it takes up some room. Apart from that, it is great! Somehow, this article you submitted had a {{date}} template with no parameter. That should not ever happen. The template should always have a fixed date; the fixed date is updated at the time of publication, by the review gadget, to reflect the actual date of publication, but when you submit the article the date template should reflect the time relative to which you wrote it. Otherwise, it's harder for a reviewer to figure out what was originally meant by "today" or "yesterday".

Are you using one of our article creation forms (such as the one at WN:WRITE)? Those article creation forms put in complicated-looking wiki markup for the parameter to {{date}}, with afaik a comment telling the writer to just not touch it, and when saved it'll simplify to the actual date on which the page was created. --Pi zero (talk) 13:51, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
