From the Editors

Welcome to the latest edition of the Wikinews Bulletin! This week, you may have noticed a slight change in the design. This was because I felt that as a different project, Wikinews should not copy the Wikipedia Signpost. If you disagree, be bold and make your opinion known on the talk page.

IRC Discussion
  • This fortnight, not much happened on IRC. There was a debate among DragonFire1024 and Wikimedia Foundaton intern Mike H., but that was about it.

The release contains 239 000 articles, 59 000 images and the dedicated Java software WikiMiner. The DVD costs 39 PLN (~ 10 EUR, $14). Soon the 8 GB image of the DVD will be available for download as well.

Site activity
  • Wikinews is approaching 10'000 articles. Spread the word!
  • A Wikinews:World News Quiz has been set up after the Quiz extension was added to our MediaWiki repertoire. Users who take the quiz are invited to post their scores on the talk page.
  • Substantial changes have been made to the main page recently. TheFearow has implemented a dynamic news ticker - see Wikinews:Ticker for information and the template at Template:Ticker. Currently only available for almost every browser that isn't IE. IlyaHaykinson added the Template:Lead article with large image to the main page, which is currently the subject of a poll. A complete main page redesign is also being discussed.
  • User:Cspurrier has kicked off an ongoing mailing list discussion on the topic of setting up some kind of official organisation to issue press cards and support our off-site activities, like a Wikinews Chapter.

Message from S/Pig0001 from SE Wiki[edit]

Daniel, I suppose you can figure out why I am here. To get more trust if this "you-know-what" fails, and so if I do get back on EN, after mentoring is over, I can write for the S/Post. I've created an article on Crazy John's death, and hope to do more.

I won't be on tomorrow (Sat 27 Oct). I'll be on Sunday, and most other days. If you want to give me some pointers (being an accelerated reporter), please do. Well done on getting MedCom Chair! -- Nathannoblet 20:28, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Daniel, can you please put this on my EN page:

<center><br><div style="align: center; width: 60%; padding: 1em; border: solid 2px gold; background-color: black;"> '''<font color="white">R E T I R E D</font>'''</div><br></center> <center>'''This user is no longer active on Wikipedia.'''</center> To all my fellow Wiki editiors. I have today decided to, unforcnatly, cease editing Wikipedia, Wikinews and the like. This is due to personal matters, at school, '''not due to any on-wiki issues'''. I would like to thank all editiors here for supporting me over the 12 months i have editied here, but I am leaving. To show I mean it, I am asking a admin to protect this page. Bye -- Spiderpig0001 07:09, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

No, w:Template:Banned better reflects why you're no longer active on the English Wikipedia. Daniel 10:35, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

hi[edit]

Welcome Back. Bawolff 19:32, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks :) I'll still be a little in-and-out, because I'm still not 100% free of my education quite yet, but when there's a football in Australia story to write about (ie. Australia v Nigeria tomorrow and then Sydney v LA Galaxy on Wednesday) I'll be here. Cheers, and thanks again, Daniel 10:08, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

OTRS privacy breach[edit]

Your comments on this worry me that there's some mailing list I'm not subscribed to that I should be on. Is there an OTRS-l?

I am extremely unhappy that Adambro is persisting in pursuing this issue. To date I see nothing on wmfcc-l about it and I am in close touch with Jay Walsh, Mike Godwin, and Cary Bass. None of these people have seriously suggested I acted improperly. Yes, the (c) violation notice was forwarded to Cirt, but that is because I know he's smart enough to already know the constraints placed on OTRS volunteers and keep the journalist-source relationship working. He was very careful to use information in it as a basis for further research to public sources and I believe the only details lifted from the infringement notice were the name of the LDS guy. With the initial confusion that this was a DMCA takedown notice he was also the first to note that it wasn't DMCA, but a vanilla (c) violation. Mike Godwin has subsequently confirmed this and noted that there *might* be a DMCA notice correctly issued to the old Florida address. --Brian McNeil / talk 08:59, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

I am as disappointed as you are that Adam is pursuing this in the manner he has, and am trying to remedy the situation now. Daniel (talk) 09:04, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
I contacted ComCom on Daniel's insistence that I should take up my suggestion that there has been some misuse of OTRS access here with the Committee rather than because I have a desire to pursue this beyond what has been said/done here on Wikinews. Adambro (talk) 09:11, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Sources[edit]

Please add sources to your article. --SVTCobra 04:11, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Can you leave it be while I'm clearly at my laptop writing it? You edit-conflicted me twice. If I disappeared for an hour-or even ten minutes-without editing it, then sure, but I was writing it paragraph by paragraph and didn't really want to lose two paragraphs due to edit conflicts as I did. I think you can assume an administrator knows to add sources to the article, and that's the only purpose of adding it to a non-published article. Daniel (talk) 04:17, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
It is not clear you are at a laptop writing it. Please use the {{editing}} tag if you are seeking exclusive editing. Otherwise, this is wiki and open editing. --SVTCobra 04:21, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
The median gap between edits was 4mins - is that not obvious enough? Daniel (talk) 04:22, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Obviously not. --SVTCobra 04:23, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Amgine and ShakataGaNai seem to think it is... Daniel (talk) 04:24, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Dude, SVT. He shouldn't need to put {{editing}} on everything he's working on. He's asking you nicely to chill out. You could just say "Sorry dude, didn't see you there" and everyone would be happy. But no, you've gotta be an asshole just like always. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 04:25, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
All I am saying is that you don't remove {{sources}} without adding sources. I don't know Daniel from Adam and I don't know what is going on over on IRC. So, I don't think I did anything wrong. In fact, I thought I was going out of my way to post a note on Daniels talk page. --SVTCobra 04:37, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
If you were to take a cursory glance at my userpage you would see I have plenty of experience writing articles, in addition to being an administrator. A small amount of brain activity would lead to the presumption that someone in my position knows what they're doing. Daniel (talk) 04:38, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
