Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally. |
All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.
Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere. The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing. Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly. |

Places to go, people to meet
Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project. |

Write your first article for Wikinews!
Use the following box to help you create your first article. Simply type in a title to your story and press "Create page". Then start typing text to your story into the new box that will come up. When you're done, press "save page". That's all there is to it!

General notes
Hi there! Nice work here; it's always good to see another Wikipedian at Wikinews. Just a quick note, categories are a lot more important at Wikinews then at Wikipedia; it's the only way to find articles once they've been archived, so please try to add those before posting an article for review. Also, it's customary to add an infobox to the article; although this is much more open to the user's discretion. There's one for each of the main categories, like {{Economy and business}} or {{Politics and conflicts}}, etc. Other than that, good work, and welcome again. Please note the following important points from the Style guide:
- All numbers of 20 or less must be spelt out in full
- All dates must be of the format Monthname daynumber, year.

- How do you mean? I'm not sure I can really help all that much--half of it is following the style guide, half keeping it neutral and everything else making sure the material follows reliable sources. If you aren't sure about how to write a good story, try reading something from a good source (like the BBC, al-Jazeera, the NYT, etc.) and seeing how they write. —fetch·comms 17:05, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Help for speeding article review process
Hi,
I don't know if this is available?
I am new here, it's my first article [1], and it took more than 24 hours, and you asked on the page-history page if it is old.
Now what? What should I do if the review process took too much and an editor like you marked it as old?
What will happen, and who should I contact?
Will it go unpublished because review was not possible to be on time?
I am sorry but I don't understand :(

- As long as it is published within 72 hours (3 days) of the event happening, it's fine. I said "old?" because of the change I made—using the term "an old person" isn't very professional-sounding. But what about speeding or bringing to attention? in other words: how wikinews keep quality and time in balance? what if I need to speed it a little bit? contact someone? use a tool?

- To speed up writing, write faster :) To speed up the review, there's nothing really but to be patient. Generally, try to write newer stories, and not late ones, lest the review take too long and it turn to stale news. —fetch·comms 00:47, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Workflow
No thanks to wrecking the /boot directory a couple of times this weekend, I've been preeocupied.
Managed to jot some notes related to workflow for articles.
I need some time to unwind now, and finish another attempt at writing a custom USB boot disk. But, there's various points where I think it should be possible to push really short submissions straight into some form of shorts/briefs; and, within an up-to-36hrs timeframe pull them back to full-blown articles if suitably expanded.
Previously I've had a go at hacking the Wikipedia article creation tool/templates into a usable state for here (somewhere on the enwn.net wiki IIRC). That would be particularly useful, and your redesign brought that to mind. A substantially different article layout would mean reworking the review gadget. In all honesty, I think the review gadget should be pushed back mostly server-side; that with some thought to, and an eye on, how FlaggedRevs may end up used on enWP. -- Brian McNeil (alt. account) /alt-talk • main talk 21:59, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
- No problems, your notes are great (and I've been working to port all sorts of stuff over to a new computer and fix up the old one, too). I presume you mean the article wizard on enwp? I think that would indeed be a good idea for new users, though it would probably be shorter (and less tl;dr) here as we accept almost all "news". Personally, I don't think flaggedrevs will ever catch on much for enwp, as there is even significant opposition to its being used only for articles about living persons and so on, so I'm not sure how lucky we'll get with a more integrated system over here (although if it is simple enough, a dev could probably make it work after much community pushing). I have a source

The "beta" article template
I am inclined to say I like where this is going, and per your comment, it's one step along a "roadmap" that nobody really has the time to put down in electrons.
For me, the next really important step is an "article wizard" that works with it. Then, it is how the review gadget handles it.
I may well be at severely reduced (even compared to now) involvement over the next few weeks. I'm doing additional research into a very large story I've been looking at for six+ months; I may be reduced to mobile access only; as, and when, I can get my phone charged up.
Yes, I'm completely ignoring the "do not put yourself in harm's way" advice; at the very least, I may be back in a month's time with some really interesting interview material. Lights go out on my fixed-line connection Monday evening. --Brian McNeil / talk 23:06, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

When you make significant changes to an article after publication, do not sight your own edits; leave them to be peer-reviewed by an uninvolved reviewer. Sighting them yourself is self-publication. --Pi zero (talk) 23:28, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

quote punctuation
The original quote ended at a period/full stop, while the sentence in the article excerpts the quote in-line. Therefore I *think*, though I'm not certain on this (Chicago MoS just altered its stance on this, and I haven't cross-compared with other guides), the comma should be outside the quotes. - Amgine | t 01:19, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

State Fair article
I try exceedingly hard to not get my knickers in a twist when an article gets rejected.....and I'm trying hard right now. I've edited the article for style, NPOV........please, honestly.......it's human interest for cripe's sake.....it's not whether or not the United Nations should be sold to Microsoft.................can you give a few inches here? Most of the guides here encourage writers to break the rules at times. I want to contribute in a meaningful way and I don't "own" anything here......but again, I'm not doing a re-write on The Taming of the Shrew......it's an article about the biggest fair in North America and the ridiculously-good food there.....that's it.Bddpaux (talk) 04:31, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Style Guide
OK.....read your bit about my need to read/adhere to the style guide.....I'm trying very hard to conform and am really learning that Wikinews is extremely NEWS-focused......that's cool......I want to contribute. Re: that article I just submittted about the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture.........were you referring to that? Can you give me some concrete specifics.....I know that doing so would be kind of time-consuming, but it would be well-received on my part. Honestly, I don't like dumping a chunk of time into an article that's going to get flushed. I tried hard to develop an inverted-pyramid model.....did I accomplish that? How about my tone, grammar, style? My refs could've maybe used a touch up here and there, admittedly.Bddpaux (talk) 13:22, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
- OK, where do I start? Don't bold anything in the article. Also, be sure to use the {{source}} template to format sources. Dates should always be "M, D, Y"-format (October 11–15, not "11th" and please use an endash, not a hyphen). When using ellipses, please use three, with a non-breaking space before the first period and a regular space after the last, with three total periods (stuff ... more stuff). Using some links to Wikipedia articles ([[w:article name|]]) is helpful for certain terms (Tyler), but always link to Wikinews pages (Texas, Barack Obama, etc.) when there are such pages here. Also, remember that Wikinews is not US-centered, so when talking about someone for the first time, use the full name ("US President Barack Obama"). Otherwise, watch out for regular grammar stuff: "... health of children in Texas, "Current ..." needs a colon there, not a comma. Other useful stuff: use an infobox (in this case, Template:Texas) and a relevant picture if available (the last bit is not overly important). - Not bad, although I would suggest using more comprehensive sources like [2], [3], [4], etc. Personally, I prefer taking a bit more time to write a fleshed out article, but yours is good. The issue is, policy is not to significantly change the content of articles (i.e., no new updates) a day or so after they're published, but WN isn't staffed like WP, so writing update articles a few days after something happens and getting them reviewed takes extra time. I can only suggest familiarizing yourself with the style guide, getting acquainted to the review process and other policies that differ from WP, and then decide if you really want to stay. The environment is different from that of WP, the active community is much smaller, and sometimes you have to rush or work extra hard to churn out stories, just because there are not that many active users. It's fun, it gets boring sometimes, and it's ... meh. It's just different. —fetch·comms 01:27, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

- WN is less interesting at times, as less goes on, but it's more fun because writing is the central aspect. However, you'll realize that there is still drama, and it's even worse than WP at times—there was a ... rather big blowup some months ago ... meh. - WN is less interesting at times, as less goes on, but it's more fun because writing is the central aspect. However, you'll realize that there is still drama, and it's even worse than WP at times—there was a ... rather big blowup some months ago ... meh.
