Jumping on stupid new bandwagons[edit]

Why the <bleep> was Google Buzz added to this?

It is not an established social networking tool, and there is no clear evidence it will be come such. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:53, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Umm, I dunno why. But who knows? --Mikemoral♪♫ 00:17, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Because we have an account on google buzz I assume, We're listing all the places we are spamming news to, buzz is one of them. Bawolff 00:19, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well if you spamming is your attention why not add Google+ as well ;-)? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 110.55.195.50 (talkcontribs)

Wikinews facebook page[edit]

  • Oh, if DF still has access, remove it. Completely. If I see another "BREAKING!!1!!!" that links to someone else's coverage I will arrange for an Eighteen-wheeler to argue with his pushbike. :P --Brian McNeil / talk 20:39, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Volunteers[edit]

I notice that sometimes the WN twitter account isn't manned. Would it be helpful if I volunteered? --Kim Bruning (talk) 23:39, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Facebook[edit]

Hello all, I have noticed that Wikinews on Facebook has not been updating and from the looks of it there are people who appreciate the updates. If the script is not working I would be happy to volunteer to manually update it. Regards, Bobby122 Contact Me (C) 01:33, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • These are all, by and large, supposed to be near-fully-automated. A fair bit of development work is needed to resolve the whole 'push' social media thing, starting with a list of who can access what. There's been disputes in the past, including people given grief over abuse of access, pushing ZOMG! "<someone else's coverage>".
I'm pretty despondent about toolserver reliability, and the skill levels of available coders. But, I've over 20 years in IT; I expect three nines, minimum.
Offer noted, and appreciated. But, review past water cooler discussion; everyone runs away when doing things properly is suggested. --Brian McNeil / talk 22:14, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Remove Buzz[edit]

Seeing as Google Buzz no longer exists, shouldn't this be removed, or switched to Google+? Jmajeremy (talk) 06:15, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Twitter-Feed[edit]

How do you run the twitter feed? Do you have scripts or is it uptated manually? We had a feed run automatically on de.wn, but the user, who operated it, is no longer active. --SonicR (talk) 10:28, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is it is automatically imported from the RSS feed for published articles. In this case, this feed. --LauraHale (talk) 10:36, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Do you know which users are responible for these technical issues?--SonicR (talk) 15:54, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps User:ShakataGaNai? There's a long-archived thread about it here. --Pi zero (talk) 17:10, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Twitter handle?[edit]

There is no update on twitter.com/wikinews for more than seven weeks and the last tweet is about Wikinews attends ComiCon in Tyler, Texas. Is the handle still active?

Facebook page[edit]

I am pretty sure the automation is not working properly since some of the articles are never shared on the page (for example, Galapagos island article.)
•–• 06:52, 27 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Acagastya: There is no automation; hasn't been for years, afaik. They have to be posted on fb by hand, or they won't get posted there. I got my facebook account specifically, and only, for the purpose of performing that operation each time I published an article, and facebook took away my account because I did't wish to voluntarily disavow my privacy by giving them my phone number. --Pi zero (talk) 14:27, 27 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
One of the page admins mentioned the posting was "scheduled". There must be some sort of automation for that.
•–• 14:38, 27 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's something provided by facebook, though I'm not certain. I.e., one tells facebook to post something at a certain time in the future. Which is different from having automation produce the order-to-post. --Pi zero (talk) 14:48, 27 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

List of Wikinewsies[edit]

The List of Wikinewsies link no longer works

www.twitter.com/wikinews/wikinewsies should be www.twitter.com/wikinews/lists/wikinewsies

Twitter[edit]

Since 2017, Twitter has a character limit of 280, not 140. --JJLiu112 (talk) 16:28, 16 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Issues[edit]

Both the Twitter and Facebook pages have not updated recently. Any reason? Also, but much less urgently, should probably update logos on the front page. --JJLiu112 (talk) 05:45, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@JJLiu112: Ten months later, the issue has yet to be resolved. As the Twitter account managers are @TUFKAAP, @DragonFire1024 and @ShakataGaNai, who have not edited since 2021, 2015, and January 2022, respectively, this makes sense. In January, ShakataGaNai that the Twitter feed was repeating its posts of the same two articles, but that problem appears to have been fixed.
The last Twitter post was on February 10, 2022, and the Facebook account appears to not even exist. Heavy Water (talk) 04:30, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

inappropriate content[edit]

A link to a porn site was presented in facebook stories. Who controls the wikinews facebook profile? Admins need to change passwords. Marek Mazurkiewicz (talk) 08:48, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Marek Mazurkiewicz: Thanks for flagging this. One of the account's admins is on it. It appears someone got hacked. Heavy Water (talk) 13:45, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Aren't You able to tak this video down? Or do You need a link to it? Piastu (talk) 17:36, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is now new one… Piastu (talk) 17:36, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Facebook page spam[edit]

https://www.facebook.com/wikinews now posts spam in its Stories. Do we know who controls it? I have tried poking people in the Wikinewsie Telegram group before, but I had no response from anyone. --Base (talk) 15:39, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Base: Please see the above thread and the link I included there. I don't have any more information than what's in there. Heavy Water (talk) 16:30, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I missed the topic. Thanks, good to know that WMF was already notified about it. --Base (talk) 16:59, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Where is the spam? The posts look like normal news stories. 105.27.197.66 (talk) 20:33, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's all I've ever seen in the feed, too. But multiple people have corroborated this over the past week. Heavy Water (talk) 20:56, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can login and post as Wikinews on Facebook. I need someone to clearly describe to me what the problem is, as, alart from the last post being in 2022 rather than this year, I do not see what is wrong there; I am not that good at understanding what it is that Facebook is trying to show. Gryllida (talk) 20:37, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • apart
Gryllida (talk) 20:37, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You can? Interesting. As Zanimum, who suspected a hack, described, the problem is posts linking to Chaturbate. Heavy Water (talk) 20:56, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Gryllida: My name is Lucas Pasqual, I am a Wikimedia Foundation staff member. The inappropriate posts have been published as Stories, not on feed. As I write this message, two of them can be seen once you click on the page's profile picture. Please check if you still have admin access to the page; if so, please delete the posts. It would be interesting to check who else has access to the page and can publish, so we figure out which is the compromised account and remove their access to the page. Let me know if I can help you with this, please. Thank you! LPasqual (WMF) (talk) 00:12, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi LPasqual Please see my reply below, I may be lacking access. Happy to go to an audio call with screen sharing to confirm this and if indeed the case then the WMF may need to force Facebook to adjust the account access. Gryllida (talk) 02:53, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the record I don't see 'Stories' button in Facebook. Gryllida (talk) 02:54, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Was able to find 'stories' under [1] but not able to delete. Gryllida (talk) 05:24, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Gryllida + @Chaddy, @Heavy Water, @Zanimum: Since we are unable to find someone who has full admin access to the Facebook page, the Legal team at the Wikimedia Foundation is submitting a complaint about this issue to Meta. We are also looking for other ways to contact them directly to get a reply faster. We will keep you updated on this as soon as we know more. In the meantime, please report any new problematic Stories you see (instructions here). Thank you! LPasqual (WMF) (talk) 21:26, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi LPasqual Thank you, hope it becomes resolved quickly. As mentioned before it would be great to keep the page and only adjust the access. I am assuming that most of its followers base is legitimate and has an interest in news from Wikinews. Could you please ensure that the legal team, and Meta, are aware of this concern? Gryllida (talk) 09:27, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@LPasqual I am a bureaucrat here.... any response from Meta? Anyway the entire FB i.d./account can just be deleted?--Bddpaux (talk) 18:00, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This problem lasts for a longer while now (not just some days, rather at least 10 days or so). I completely understand that we all are volunteers and that it can take some time to fix problems. But this one here is not a little negligibility. The official Wikinews Facebook page is repeatedly posting porn spam stories. That is an urgent problem and should be fixed as soon as possible... Chaddy (talk) 02:39, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Zanimum, Gryllida: Looks like the problem continues, there's still pornographic stuff being shared to stories. —chaetodipus (talk · contribs) 04:14, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I now have reported the page to Facebook. Maybe they care more about it than the page administrators. Chaddy (talk) 13:48, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Facebook is obviously already aware of the situation. The lack of an immediate resolution doesn't prove your absurd implication Zanimum, the other page admins, and the WMF don't care about this situation — especially relative to Facebook. Heavy Water (talk) 17:44, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This issue was first reported here almost two weeks ago (August the 9th). It took until August the 17th that one of the page admins (Gryllida) worte anything here (to be fair, Zanimum - also an FB admin as it seems - opened a thread in the linked water cooler discussion also on August the 9th). But Gryllida didn't know anything about the problem. Therefore obviously eight days long no one thought it would be important to brief the other Facebook page admins. Gryllida then was informed about the problem and asked by LPasqual (WMF) if he/she could access the admin tools and if so if he/she could check which one is the compromised account. But now again four days passed by and still nothing happened while there are still porn spam stories posted. So please don't tell me there is taken much care about this problem here. I know, Wikinews is quite dead, but not being able to respond to such an urgent issue for such a long time is embarrassing. Chaddy (talk) 14:38, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I needed a description of the issue then I can resolve it. I wonder why these spammy/pornographic messages didn't show when I checked briefly.
Sorry, I didn't read it earlier, I'm on the computer for a few hours every day. The wiki messages are not read as I don't visit the wiki every day. Email and IRC (nick 'gry') are read more promptly.
I'd like to view who posts the offending content, and remove access. I tried to do it and came to [2] which says "only users with full control can manage and view who has access to the Wikinews Facebook page".
If here is someone with more in-depth knowledge of how Facebook works to confirm that I'm looking in the correct place, I'd be happy to check, maybe I am not navigating the site correctly.
Otherwise, looks like I probably do not have sufficient access to remove the spammer's access, and someone else needs to ask Facebook to resolve this. Gryllida (talk) 02:49, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, if no one of the page admins has the correct access rights to solve this problem, then maybe it would be best, if the Wikimedia Foundation contacts Facebook (ping at LPasqual). An official organisation should be heard much faster than if a volunteer would try to contact Facebook (most time, Facebook ignores such attempts or just responds semi-automatically which isn't helpful at all). Chaddy (talk) 13:16, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@LPasqual (WMF) and others: This issue is still not solved. Why does it take such a long time? Chaddy (talk) 04:31, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. This is demoralizing. More evidence that we only really have a shell of infrastructure around here. I am pondering carefully my future with this project and this mess is a part of that.--Bddpaux (talk) 17:57, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, everyone. We have reported the Facebook page to Meta. As this process usually takes some time, we are trying to reach out to the company directly through other channels, but haven't had any success so far. We understand this issue has been going on for some time, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation while we try to help find a solution. We will let you know as soon as we have news. In the meantime, please keep reporting the Stories from your own accounts. Thank you. LPasqual (WMF) (talk) 22:25, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There is still no solution for this problem... Chaddy (talk) 14:00, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps it is time to use some other platform, not the Facebook, as centralization is not helpful
Could sign up at some Mastodon instance, tell me which instance you like please. http://joinmastodon.org
Could also come to Lemmy, https://join-lemmy.org/
We can post text on-wiki on some page e.g. User:Gryllida/posts ensure we put one line there at a time and wait. A computer program (a bot) could monitor it every one minute, and post any lines from it to Mastodon and Lemmy, then delete from the wiki page to indicate that it has successfully been posted to Mastodon. I would happily volunteer to write such a bot.
Also when the new place is created I would be happy to post to our official Wikinews Facebook and link to it there. Gryllida (talk) 22:26, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Awaiting your confirmation which instance for Mastodon and which instance for Lemmy, then I will proceed with writing the software for the posting. It will be hopefully possible to host it at toolforge and provide shared access to several interested contributors. The software if successful could probably also be reused by other language editions of Wikinews. Gryllida (talk) 22:27, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Base , Heavy Water, LPasqual (WMF), @Chaddy, @Heavy Water, @Zanimum: chaetodipus , Marek Mazurkiewicz Gryllida (talk) 22:28, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a problem with your idea. Sounds good. :) Mastodon is more well-known, I think.
But the Facebook page will still exist, I guess? And thus also the spam will proceed, I guess, because we obviously have no possibility to stop it? Chaddy (talk) 22:40, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I think facebook could continue to exist (and I can also setup the bot/script to post there from the wiki also) Gryllida (talk) 23:57, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also don't have a problem with setting up Mastodon, I have no opinion wrt the exact instance, I would appreciate having access to the tool if it gets written so that I could potentially use it for ukwn in the future. But as to Facebook, I don't think we want to step aside from it altogether, the preferable solution is to reset admin access rather than delete/recreate the page. I wonder why it takes so long for WMF. Aren't both WMF and Meta in SF? Perhaps someone can just walk to the Meta offices or something?.. --Base (talk) 22:58, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also would like us to stay on Facebook. And I also still wonder what takes so long to solve this problem. Chaddy (talk) 23:07, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can stay on Facebook as well as other places - other places will be hopefully less misused than Facebook Gryllida (talk) 23:57, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will experiment with script to post to facebook from the wiki, thanks Base and thanks Chaddy Gryllida (talk) 23:58, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Note that I would like to know what instance. Wouldn't want to be responsible for picking one at random, as there is question of what county it should be in, which instance to trust, etc. Someone else's insight into this would be greatly appreciated. My program will be the same regardless anyway nomatter which instance. Gryllida (talk) 23:59, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have no clue about those platforms and instances on them. I might be of some help with the coding, depending on what language it would be written in. Heavy Water (talk) 00:28, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, if you do still have the ability to post, could you post something acknowledging the hack and saying Wikinews is working on resolving it? Like: "Wikinews is aware this account has been hacked. The nonprofit organization that hosts us, the Wikimedia Foundation, is working with Meta Platforms to resolve this situation. We apologize again for the interruption of service (you might or might not want to add here something like, "caused by the delay in contacting a contributor with access to post to this page") and can be found at www.wikinews.org. Thank you for your patience." And if it's possible, please fix the "Wikimedia Foundati" typo in the "Intro" section. Heavy Water (talk) 15:34, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Three months now and the issue still is not solved. This is totally embarrassing. Chaddy (talk) 13:45, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I emailed Gryllida on Saturday about posting an acknowledgement of the hack (see above). I haven't heard back yet. Heavy Water (talk) 19:27, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gryllida has said they apparently don't have the ability to post to the Facebook page. :S Heavy Water (talk) 16:41, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They totally lost control over the page. But why is there still no solution? Did still no contact between the Foundation und Facebook happen? Chaddy (talk) 17:31, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There is still no solution for this problem. I can't believe that. Chaddy (talk) 22:25, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
