Sunday

It is Sunday, but almost forgot what it meant. Still have pidgin? Mind popping up on #wikinewsie? CC@Blood Red Sandman:
103.254.128.86 (talk) 14:30, 6 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

I’ll be online in about thirty minutes. Green Giant (talk) 14:52, 6 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
For some reason Pidgin is struggling to connect. I'm going to try to troubleshoot. Green Giant (talk) 15:38, 6 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Green Giant :) Please help with testing...

...this tool for new drafts creation notification. There are signup instructions on it. I would be delighted to hear what you think and improve this tool. --Gryllida (talk) 23:06, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Signed up. Cheers for letting me know. Green Giant (talk) 23:44, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I've added your list page. Each line on it should be a valid category name. You will start to receive notifications soon. To report bugs please reply to any of the emails that you receive and it goes to my inbox, or leave me a message anywhere on-wiki. Gryllida (talk) 23:52, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Re: welcome-a-bit (March)

Hi Green Giant

It has been several weeks after you signed up for the 'welcome a bit' notification. Does it work for you? Did it help you with editing new drafts? Do you wish to continue receiving the notifications?

This month I have identified a bug in DynamicPageList extension, which prevents me from excluding archived articles from the initial results. This has been addressed by suppressing the first notifications continue to work as expected.

I see you may have received some notifications twice, in the case when one article belongs to two categories which are interesting to you. I hope to fix this by the end of this month.

Do you have any suggestions for improvement? Thanks, --Gryllida (talk) 04:49, 20 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the review, Green Giant

Hi Green Giant :-)

Thank you for the review of the whales story, and for sharing the idea about making it a prepared story. This is really appreciated! I am glad to see someone who checks the news room and updates the article status.

Neurosurgery article

Admittedly the event was nearly a month ago. Though, since it's OR, and a first-timer from another language, I was still hoping to complete the review — as the talk page notes, just a few days ago I asked the author to provide transcripts of the Russian-language audio recordings of the interviews, and they graciously did so. I might have gotten to it yesterday, or today, if things had unfolded differently. --Pi zero (talk) 22:59, 30 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I think we can have an exception in this case with a banner, akin to {{correction}} at the top of the published story, remarking that it happened a while ago, but has nevertheless been published? Gryllida (talk) 23:51, 30 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Well, I think if we were to publish, we'd just publish. But somehow we would need to get the article back under review, and that is something only Green Giant might be able to arrange; I don't know of any case where one en.wn reviewer has ever undone a not-ready review by another reviewer (setting aside one truly bizarre incident many years ago involving an already-published article), and it would seem a very bad precedent to set. --Pi zero (talk) 23:57, 30 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
I have reset it to review per this thread. Green Giant (talk) 05:17, 1 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for removing the vandalism on my talk page.

Hello Green Giant.

I'd like to thank you for taking action on the IP address here who posted to my talk page about the English Vikidia and why they're blocked. I am an administrator at the English Vikidia (Verify here) and the IP address concerned is caught in a rangeblock which was instigated to take action against a persistant vandal who is also a cross wiki LTA from the English Wikipedia.

The IP address is one of those used by this vandal, JaySmith2018, who has multiple socks - one of which has already vandalised PiZero's talk page here trying to get at me because it's the only other place he can now post.

I note you have blocked the IP address for 1 week for the vandalism. Thank you for doing this. However, be aware that it's not a static IP and this user may try again to get to me, or possibly (like they did to PiZero) have a go at you, trying to get you to block me! I know this is confusing as all hell and its mother came for the ride, but I hope you understand what's happening.

In the event of any further vandalism to my talk page here, please drop me a note over at my talk page on Vikidia too, since I only normally come here when the cross wiki alert thing tells me I have messages!

Many thanks.

IP welcoming unregistered username

This is a phenomenon I've seen a number of times in modern times (I might guess all of them I've seen have been within the past year, but it's possible time has gotten away from me). It seems like a very strange behavior; I can't see how it would happen by accident, and I can't see what possible use it could be to anyone as a deliberate act either. Either way it feels like it ought to have some sort of automation behind it. Have you any insight into what might be behind it, or even how it ought to be handled (other than deleting the created page)? --Pi zero (talk) 12:35, 8 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Pi zero: It is a very odd phenomenon indeed and truth be told I can’t say for sure what purpose there is behind it. It might be worth keeping a log of such IP's and pages edited to see if there is a pattern. When I’ve got a moment I will look at the deletion logs for a couple of other wikis to see if they are experiencing something similar. As for handling this matter, I would suggest a filter could be implemented and although I’m not a coder, filter 18 looks like it could be the basis for such a new filter. Availability for review?

I'm thinking (with an eye to the current dry spell) of maybe getting back into the habit of writing an occasional article. I'd hope to do this when you'd be most likely to be able to review it. When, lately, during the day/week might you be available for that? (Perhaps I've asked you this before, but these things do change, and in any case my memory fails to conjure it up.) --Pi zero (talk) 12:23, 12 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Pi zero: That’s an excellent idea. I can tell you the UTC times but I don’t know how they might translate at your end. For example my phone says it is now 16:35 but the wiki tells me it is 15:35. I am usually free from about 20:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday. I will try my best to help with reviews and particularly your articles. Green Giant (talk) 15:35, 12 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
At this time of year I'm UTC minus four. Whether that 20:00–22:00 is UTC or British Summer Time (either my 4:00–6:00 pm or my 3:00–5:00 pm), it means if I write something on a given day other-than-Sunday I should try to submit it by just after lunch. :p  --Pi zero (talk) 15:51, 12 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Green Giant, you have the UTC live clock enabled? And is your computer "smart" enough to update time based on DST status? If yes, I can customise the gadget for you to help the conversion.
223.237.148.35 (talk) 17:49, 12 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Available for review. It's a fast-moving story. Sorry the sources mounted up; there's quite a fog-of-war surrounding the story. I did leave a few embedded html comments, here and there. --Pi zero (talk) 18:45, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

I underestimated how rusty I am on these aspects of writing, and it's an especially fraught story in these respects. We do need to be able to do small items like this without being dragged into "encyclopedic" perspective, which is impossible to provide for news... but, not me yet and certainly not me on that story. Thanks for catching that. Even now I'm too immersed in it to quite see the thing clearly, which is one of the points of independent review. I'm probably no better situated for a rematch with it, either; I'm thinking I should take Bddpaux's advice: "Get it, write it, submit it, move on." --Pi zero (talk) 14:47, 18 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

How you read news

I would like to read news every day, and am looking for help. How do you read your news? What software do you use? (I use mPages RSS client for Firefox, but I would be happy to learn what you use.) --Gryllida (talk) 00:22, 21 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Gryllida: Interesting question. My main way of reading news is the Safari browser on my iPhone, where I have a number of sources of news. It is not significantly different to any other browser but it is convenient for the times I read the news - mainly the 25 minutes on the train to and from work. I don’t really like opening my laptop on the train even if I get a seat with a table. However a mobile phone can be used even when I’m stood. -Green Giant (talk) 20:46, 21 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for sharing this. There are several other things taking away my free time at the moment but once they are sorted out, I will get back to you. Gryllida (talk) 09:52, 6 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom election 2019

As a current Arb, would you be willing to stand for Arbcom again this year? If you don't wish to nominate yourself, I would be happy to nominate you. --Pi zero (talk) 02:52, 1 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Yes, I’d be happy to stand if you are willing to nominate me. -Green Giant (talk) 05:57, 1 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

CU

Since you are a steward, can you check if the newly created accounts, which are spamming the RC are originating from the same IP, and if yes, maybe do something about it.
103.254.128.98 (talk) 10:50, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

I checked them earlier this morning as I was deleting some of the spam. The IP addressed are all over the place with some showing multiple spam accounts and others showing relatively few. I globally blocked a few of the IPs and modified one of the abuse filters (which seems to have stopped over a hundred attempted edits and blocked five of the bot accounts). I think it is likely to need more tweaking but as it stands we seem to be coping. -Green Giant (talk) 12:24, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Do you mean this abuse filter, which read "06:14, July 8, 2019 Abuse filter talk contribs blocked DaciaLevvy3380 talk contribs with an expiration time of indefinite (account creation disabled) (Automatically blocked by abuse filter. Description of matched rule: General spam)"?
103.254.128.98 (talk) 12:36, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that’s the one, although I will be doing more CU searches this evening on the accounts that popped up after I left for work. -Green Giant (talk) 13:01, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Review?

Do you think you could review an article, which is on its last day, after an hour from now? Might be ready even before that.
•–• 18:50, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sure, I’ll have a look. -Green Giant (talk) 19:14, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I am about to save the article and cite all the sources, so that you can start reading the sources.
•–• 19:34, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
But can you check if you can access the WaPo link? I have mentioned on the talk page.
•–• 19:38, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Done.

Review query

I'm wondering what this is about. I hear from acagastya that they didn't use that source; and reviewers are particularly never to add sources (though I've been known to put one on the list that I know was used). Should that be an external link, instead? --Pi zero (talk) 23:16, 8 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Pi zero: I think it is the original article in Spanish from AFP but I can’t find the English version. I don’t think we should be linking to aggregator pages if the original is available. It probably might be better as an external link. -Green Giant (talk) 07:10, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hm. What we're very careful about is documenting the fact of syndication, since it goes directly to which sources are independent of each other. We have instructions about how to write the citations: the syndicate appears in the author field. --Pi zero (talk) 08:37, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Aggregators have been tricky. I would like to know why you would object it, Green Giant. There was a time when I formed an opinion about it. But it was a weak opinion and there was no point holding it strongly. I was concerned about the quality of output from news aggregators, but in my experience, I never found any issue with that. I would always look for the original links (of course in English if they are available) but if I do not, then I go for aggregator. All these years, I had a fair share of experience of dealing with poor sources. And I do not tend to use aggregators unless there are other sources ready to back up the claim.
•–• 14:27, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
My main objection was that although you’ve cited two articles through Yahoo, at least one of them (the Independent) is available directly from the newspaper website. I don’t see why we should cite an aggregator in place of the original source the aggregator copied from. With the AFP source I was thinking of failing the WN article because we don’t have an original version in English i.e. where did Yahoo get that AFP page? This is why I added the Spanish article from AFP because it looked like at least a partial translation. -Green Giant (talk) 17:23, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Seems to me we should avoid making things more difficult for the reporter, whose task is already formidable enough (just as the reviewer's is; labor-saving is a long-term goal for us all around); thus, we should allow the reporter to use what they've got. Btw, in my experience it's often difficult, maybe impossible, to find the original, for one reason or another. Amongst the many possible reasons: I've long figured that wire services deliberately don't make some of their articles directly available to the public, so that news outlets who pay to syndicate the article know that their readers can't bypass them by going directly to the wire service. --Pi zero (talk) 18:17, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Failing for that reason seems harsh. Am I overlooking something? There are times when NYT uses reports by the AP or Reuters and adds top of it. We can't say unto what degree; but I can't think of any reason why it would be failed. (Also, please ping me when you reply; so am working on a transcript of an interview, and the spamming of the RC makes it very hard to keep track. This one is the longest interview so far, and I might not respond or read the message immediately.)

You have been elected to this season's ARBCOM. This would be your second time, right? The new team's term is under effect from August 4.

nom.ke

We've just been looking at this page. It appears to be a complete mirror of all the wikimedia projects, unsecured and in the Kenya domain, and invites people to log in, which would of course immediately expose their wikimedia password to not only the site owner (whomever that is) but potentially everyone else on the internet since the site also uses the unsecured protocol.

I'm thinking somebody should be informed of this as wikimedia appears to have a strong interest in doing something about it (though I'm not entirely clear on what can be done). Would you know who that would be? --Pi zero (talk) 15:14, 15 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

For what it's worth, nothing happens when I click the login link. Maybe it's a phishing operation under development or maybe it's an innocent non-working mirror. --SVTCobra 15:20, 15 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I just noticed the "login" doesn't work, thus doesn't atm actually invite what I was worried about. One of those times I'm glad to discover I was wrong. It still seems worrisome, and the sort of thing one ought to inform somebody of. --Pi zero (talk) 15:28, 15 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
I’m just popping by and won’t be back to speed for another couple of weeks but from a brief reading of messages elsewhere, I understand this issue is being looked at by the WMF. I’d recommend avoiding it until we know more about the intentions behind the site. Green Giant (talk) 13:31, 19 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello.
Are you interested yet? I can add that there is lot of quasi-free media, such as in wikivoyage:ru:category:Images (not classified as free mostly due to non-FoP). Of course, I have certain specific interest to help with this venture. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 09:20, 30 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
