Niger coup article

So I fixed the Niger coup ousts president article; added another paragraph to it like you said to, but I'm new to Wikinews, and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do next. How about this:

"There have been some significant changes to the leaderboard over the last couple of weeks. One of the main changes is the fact that five more entrants for the competition have now started to create articles for the contest, meaning that five more users have now gone onto the leaderboard. The total number of competitors on the list was 20 the last time I checked. One user in particular, known by the name of C628, appears to have performed particularly persistently recently, going from not being on the leaderboard at all to climbing all the way up to seventh place. On a separate note, I also managed to reach second place recently, surpassing Dendodge's total. This shows you just what you can achieve if you put enough effort into writing articles over a certain period of time. Remember, it is still perfectly possible to build up a score that is higher than Tempodivalse's! I wish all of our competitors the very best of luck for the next month and a bit."

Regarding archiving articles

Hi Mikemoral! Hope you're enjoying being an administrator. Minor note, when archiving articles please do not remove {{publish}}, but rather add {{archive}} immediately below it. Even with the 'two clicks' there is no way you can carry out all the checking specified in Wikinews:Archive conventions. This is the final streamlining of articles; dates are brought into a single format, spelling is rechecked, etc. Brian McNeil (talk · contribs) wrote these conventions. The idea is that once an article is protected and archived, there is almost no reason to touch it again. Categories seem to be the main exception to this rule. What checking? I never do any checking of that sort before archiving (unless it's something obvious I see in the edit window). Due to flagged revs/peer review, the possibility of inappropriate information/mistakes being brought into the article after publication is practically nil, it will be quickly noticed and reverted (unless a flagged editor does it, but we trust them to know better than that). IMHO, there is no harm in using a semi-automated process to archive. Something to bring up at the water cooler? Tempodivalse [talk] 03:24, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I read the conventions, but forgot about that bit (although i've archived thousands of articles, and never received any comment on not checking anything). CC License Question

(this was posted to your old, redirected talk page, moving here so you'll get the ping. -Tempo) Since Wikinews is technically commercial, are there any CC licenses that can be freely used in the audio news cast? I was just curious since all CC licenses I have come across have a non-commercial attribution. If that's the case, I can go back to the old intro / outro music for the time being since I'm not sure where I'd find free music that would meet the requirements. If you have any ideas on what licenses we can use, please let me know.

Following up on AW

(copied here from your old talk page so you'll get the ping. -Tempo)

I stopped by your audio files page to take a listen and the only issue I see(hear) is your microphone. It sort of makes your voice sound as if you are speaking over a telephone but otherwise your pronunciation seems just fine. I'd love to get some help with the audio briefs and if you stop by my user page you can take a look at some of the ideas I have for structure, templates and so on. I'm keeping all that on my user page right now just to edit the ideas before I finalize them and get them on the main audio news briefs page.

Really, all that you would have to worry about right now is writing your script for the story you are reading, then record the file and get it to me in .ogg format (along with your script - either in an email or as a .txt file). If we have access to an FTP server, that would be even better. Once I have that, I can edit the show in Audacity and get the final mix created and all the housekeeping done on the wiki side.

The only other thing I would need is a .ogg recording of you saying your name and the current date. This is because if we are both reading, then the script would go something like :

"From Wikinews, the free news source, this is the audio Wikinews brief for Friday, April 23nd, 2010. I'm Dan Harlow and I'm Mike Moral and these are today's top stories:"

The part in bold you would record (keep in mind the inflection of your voice so it "sounds" like we are in the same room. For example, if you listen to how I say my name, I pronounce it so that it builds : Harlow is higher than Dan and Dan is higher than I'm, so you would probably want to reverse that structure when you say "And I'm Mike Moral" where I'm is higher then Mike and Mike is higher than Moral. I know it's sort of hard to explain without hearing it, but it's an easy thing to work out.

Of course this is dependent on who will be reading the first (lead) story in the brief. If you are reading the lead story, then it would be "I'm Dan Harlow and I'm Mike Moral ..." but if I'm reading the top story, then you should read the introduction "From Wikinews, the free news source, this is the audio Wikinews brief for Friday, April 23nd, 2010. I'm Mike Moral" This way the recording flows nicely into the lead story without 3 changes in speaker in just under 3 seconds.

Anyway, we can work this all out as we go since it's just a few minor creative decisions that can easily be edited on the fly.

Let me know when you want to start, even if you want to start today. I try to publish the AW around 5pm EST (in the US) because that fits my current schedule, but just lemme know how, when and if you want to do any recording. Turtlestack (talk) 18:06, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Today's This Day In History

I was so going to do Edward Elgar, in fact, I even used a piece of his music in Monday's show to lead up to today, but I was so beat and dead tired after work and the segment would have taken so long to write, that I just couldn't do it and had to settle for something "easier". Anyway, I just felt like I should tell you since you like classical music and Elgar is a fairly major figure (with plenty of CC licences music I was all set to use). Wikinews:Assume good faith

Hi. I thought I'd better explain what I was thinking here. I'd overlooked the Category:No publish that {{Softredirect}} adds, so I put that in manually, and of course your copyedit of de-contracting the contraction. I'm not stuck on {{ambox|type=warning}}. But {{Softredirect}} is diametrically opposed to the page's whole reason for existing, because it generates a message that says AGI is the same thing as AGF, when we're pouring all our effort into doing absolutely everything we possibly can to prevent anyone from ever thinking that. --Pi zero (talk) 03:42, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

What I don't like about the ambox is its stingy use of space: there's that whole page with nothing else on it, and the box is this narrow horizontal strip with a small image, jam packed with text. I actually think some of its aesthetic features might be rather pleasant if not for that. I might try my hand at opening it out a bit... tomorrow. To publish or not to publish

I was just looking through my watchlist (I'm kinda bad about looking in there regularly) and noticed you were wondering why we don't publish the news brief page.

When James Pain was running AW he had in his templates and notes that we don't publish those but I can't remember his reasons.

However, I believe the no publish is because we want visitors going straight to the articles and not the briefs page. Also, the briefs page represents the script of the show and not an approved and verified version of each story. Since changes are made to the articles for the show (word flow usually, but sometimes more dramatic changes have to be made) we wouldn't probably want the script to be the representative of each article. One other thing is that I've been given amazingly wide latitude to do these shows as I see fit - adding music, bad puns, humorous transitions between stories and neutral but (hopefully) funny commentary on the rare occasion (the very end of the Harry Potter story from the July 15th show being a good example of such).

Still though, it might not be a bad idea to run the idea of a publish on these pages past the "committee" to see what everyone thinks. I agree that it would add at least one more reason for Google to look through the site and rank us which, in turn, could lend us more exposure - which is the point of the AW anyway.

Perhaps changes could be made to the format of the briefs page to more accurately reflect the actual text of the published articles?

There's a difference between publishing and {{publishing}}. The first is clicking the save button to allow Google, Yahoo!, Bing, etc. to index the pages and put them in web searches, the other publishes news articles to the main page. When you add CAT:No publish to a page it stops from being indexed in a web search. I think it'd be a good idea to allow the news briefs to show up in Google for publicity and such.
I personally think the news briefs are fine as is. Maybe when there can be for than one person running AW, then we can perhaps get the news briefs put on the main page. I'm not sure what you had in mind for changing the news briefs' format, however. If you mean putting up the briefs up for {{review}}, then that should be brought up at WN:WC.

Yep, the briefs page is the script I use to read the show - it varies very little from the recorded show aside from the occasional ad-lib or linguistic work around. There is, of course, the easter egg I have in every show which is not on the script or brief, but it's a non issue since it's fund raising stuff for the site. Turtlestack already got us on iTunes. I remember we were chatting on IRC about getting AW on iTunes, I suggested PodBean. He still uses it for MP3 hosting for iTunes-friendliness. Yep, we've been on iTunes awhile now (May 15th, actually), and I've been uploading the show to the Internet Archive since day one. I also upload the show onto my blog which sends out a tweet to my twitter. I also used to upload to SoundCloud, but that site is really more for music so I stopped using it. Note, just address a previous comment. No publish does not prevent google from indexing (Well it might prevent google news, but thats a different story). No publish keeps it off the list of developing list on the news room. No publish is unnecessary on brief pages. The category Brief has a very similar affect to the no publish category. I'm well-pissed off. He's an arse, politeness does not excuse being an ignorant moron. Wikinews will need people editing from 3G devices such as this Nokia, to really break out in OR terms. He's stymied my efforts, in very limited time, to participate in important policy debates. Nice is useless, when you cause the loss of hours of input by someone with a clue. I despair, and thus stomp off in search of news where I am ln-the-scene, able to get photos and audio, and not plagued by people who are mediocre would-be 'journalists'. More likely, I will assume he role of bard toan attractive, mostly female, audience. Opinion -- topic newsworthy?

I have told some of the primatologists I know that if they want to bring breaking news to me, then I will help highlight it on Wikinews. Originally, I was thinking about newly discovered species/populations, extinctions, or other major conservation-related events. I've just received a request from a researcher wanting to know if Wikinews could include a news article about an award that's being given to a Malagasy conservationist for his efforts to help protect habitat in Madagascar. Do you feel that an article on this topic is newsworthy in a Wikinews context? I can see it going both ways, given what Rabary Desiré has done in Madagascar: buying land with his meager income to build a small private nature reserve, educating his fellow citizens about conservation, etc. However, I've never heard of "Seacology" until now, but it sounds like an important award, the money will be spent to further conservation of primate species recognized on "The World's 25 Most Endangered Primates" (published by the IUCN, Conservation International, and the International Primatological Society), and the $10,000 prize is huge for someone who lives in a country where most people earn around $100 a year. To be honest, I've never heard of Seacology before. You will need two sources for the article to be reliable, unless WN:OR is done. If I can get contact information (i.e., an email address), then I can ask the Seacology organization. It's best to have a third-party news source and ideally the article will be written around the ceremony. Moon

Are you quite sure that the 'Moon' is not a proper noun? Moon refers to any moon in general, but when the Moon is mentioned in the article, it is referring to a specific object, the moon of Earth. Tyrol5 (talk) 16:37, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

I've learned moon is lowercase a while back, but there seems to be many disagreements on that. NASA lowercase and Wikipedia uppercase. I'd prefer using NASA's capitalization. Looking at the Google search results, it's about even between "moon" and "Moon." —Mikemoral♪♫ 16:42, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

The style guide I put together is meant to easy to read and can save a bit of color ink, being blank. But, of course, It's bland. I removed formatting and template stuff from the print version, leaving the section on article content in it. Hello User:Mikemoral, I saw the review of my most recent article, and I have been trying my best to follow style guide regulations, but I know that I'm going to have trouble with being less wordy and more concise. My writing style, unfortunately, is very much like what you saw in the Kashmir article. I'm not sure how to make the article less wordy and more "news-y", as you put it, but that may be because I am too closely related to this article. Well, I'm glad to hear it's not a bot. I've concluded it's better to have a sapient do archiving, 'cause there's no telling what peculiar circumstance might come up that a person could catch but a bot couldn't. (I do find some things that are fairly often still wrong after a week, like missing categories and misplaced {{publish}} tags, but I'm really looking for the unique problems).
BTW, since you weren't using the pseudo-bot flag, you'd need to sight a second time, after protecting. (I sighted them for you. Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine: it used to drive me crazy, before I was an admin, that I'd look at an archived article and it'd have this [review pending changes] button that I couldn't do anything about. :-) --Pi zero (talk) 02:59, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

You can download that image to you desktop and upload it here with fair use rationale. I think you hould instead use a free image. This Flickr image is licensed freely, so we can use it here.
