Welcome[edit]

Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Tempodivalse [talk] 19:00, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You've added seven sources to this article, and no content. Sources which are not used should not be listed in Wikinews articles. The main reason for this is that all articles must be peer reviewed prior to publication. This requires that all sources be read. The more sources, the more time-consuming the review, and the less likely it will be carried out. If you intend to add content from these sources, please do, but trim any that are not used. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:46, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving[edit]

Please stop adding {{archived}} to articles. Only admins can archive an article. Gopher65talk 21:19, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Girl found dead in truck in Northamptonshire, England[edit]

I invite your input, as author of the article, on this thread. --Pi zero (talk) 22:50, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copy/paste[edit]

Please remember to try an not copy and paste words from other news sources, and also to not type some word for word. Doing so could result in an article being tagged {{copyvio}}. There was a little bit in Music videos return to UK version of YouTube after agreement with PRS, but I took care of it :) Aside from that, thanks for your articles. We very much appreciate them. Keep up the great work! :) DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 23:11, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Quotations[edit]

I've noticed in some of the articles you've written, you sometimes put things between double quotes that aren't exactly what was said according to the cited sources. Quotations are things that we're asserting were actually said, exactly as shown (though there's a little latitude on punctuation); if you're paraphrasing, don't use double quotes. --Pi zero (talk) 01:34, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A related error: If a cited source asserts that someone said "Foo.", and a cited source asserts that that same person said "Bar.", it is not true that that person said "Foo. Bar." That's an misattribution. --Pi zero (talk) 16:05, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Two sections were copyvio'd, one from BBC and one from Telegraph. I was | | close from slapping {{copyvio}} on this article. You've been notified above by Dragon and now you've been warned again. So please be very careful in the future about what you put down. The only time the copy/paste function on your computer should be used, is with quotes. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 23:26, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Editor status[edit]

I have nominated you over at WN:FRRFP to gain editor status so that your changes don't need independantly checked. You could also review articles others had written if you wanted to. If you're up for that, then I'm sure there'd be no issues - it's designed to be easy come, easy go. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 13:03, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Marked with {{copyvio}}. You've been warned previously, and I really don't want to drop the hammer on you because you've doing some decent work ... but it will only go so far. This is your 3rd and final warning on this subject. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 21:16, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your request for editor[edit]

Hi, Rayboy. Just wanted to let you know I've had to close your request for editor status at WN:FRRFP as unsuccessful, as there was not enough support to promote you. Whatever you do, don't let this discourage you from contributing in the future! My suggestion to you would be to write a few more articles without copyvio issues, so that you can demonstrate your knowledge of the copyright policy, and then apply again. If you need any help or have questions please feel free to ask me at my talk page. Cheers. Tempodivalse [talk] 23:51, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Single-sentence openings[edit]

Something I've noticed this morning looking at a couple of the articles you've written is a tendency to use a single sentence for the opening paragraph. I'm not a fan of this style as it is very difficult to answer the 5W & H (Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How) within a single sentence.

From my own experience, a good opening paragraph for an article should be 2-3 sentences, and basically just enough to use as the text for putting the article up as a lead. --Brian McNeil / talk 08:53, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that I failed the PR on this article. Calebrw (talk) 06:47, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked for 48 Hours - Copvio[edit]

While you're making a fine effort to write some good articles, you apparently have missed my 3 (THREE) warnings about copyright violations, not to mentions DragonFire1024's warning about copy/pasting. Today I found incident #5 - "Tesco pricing error in Cambridgeshire, England allows customers to get cheaper fuel" which I noted on the talk page. Take this next 2 days to re-read Wikinews Policies and guidelines, especially anything to do with copyright's. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 02:00, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with this. Good block. Cirt (talk) 20:09, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked 72 Hours - Copyvio[edit]

"Before opening the envelope containing the name of the winning city, Rogge". Wikinews Edit - Source Article. My patience is officially done. These block times are going to start escalating rapidly after this point. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 18:05, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with this. Good block. Cirt (talk) 20:09, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Quiz[edit]

The quiz is supposed to go up on a Sunday, that's how various places are coded to handle it - eg Main page show newest on Sunday, or last week's if not ready; water cooler to highlight not done on Sunday if applicable. --Brian McNeil / talk 10:26, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But the problem is the fact that the regular quizwriter, Tempodivalse, will beat me to it in terms of writing the quiz. --Rayboy8 (talk) 11:43, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

TBH, we can probably cope with those of us who notice doing it 'early' and at the proper date the code will whip out the new one anyway. You could always say to Tempo "Can I do the quiz this week?" Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 12:03, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
yeah, I always spoil everything by barging in a second after midnight UTC on a Sunday and writing up the quiz before anyone else gets a chance. I don't mind at all if Rayboy does the quiz next week; feel free to write it if you like. Cheers Tempodivalse [talk] 20:16, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reading various stuff here before adding another section. You can start preparing the quiz ahead of time instead of trying to put it up early. Figure out what page it's on and do a couple questions, put an INCOMPLETE warning, and maybe warn some of the other people who regularly do the quiz. That should be cover for getting them to check and complete it if you're not about when it should go up. We probably need a template for the quiz to tag it as incomplete and highlight that where more people see it. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:12, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Immediacy and other issues[edit]

Please review carefully the changes I have made in this edit. Today is Sunday, a story labelled breaking news, with events that took place today, should use the more immediate wording. And, never, never ever, introduce a quote with a colon unless there is no other way. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:44, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Italic names[edit]

Rayboy8, I'm not sure why make some names italic. It's not needed. Thanks, Calebrw (talk) 17:17, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mind's reader[edit]

When a brain is working it generates an impulses (microelectrical), when somebody is thinking or operates incoming iformation (sees something or hears something) a computer remembers that impuls from the brain (from where it goes and what kind of). the next time it must be similar. <br\><br\> probably every person has own type of impulses. but if the computer could read the impulses then it could send the same to a person. it means it could play on the brain. <br\><br\> Just theory. But heard what russians are working on it. 2004 year Alexander Kalinins Lazars son, 8street 17, Ul Yanovka (or Sablino), Saint-Petersburg, Russia (talk) 05:01, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

User designs of important pages[edit]

This is what I came to comment on, I spotted you'd made an edit to your main page design and thought I'd point you at a couple of others that need beaten into shape.

For me the most important one to really improve is the Wikinews:Newsroom - it's dreadful. Also, Wikinews:Breaking news. Both of these are linked to from the main page header, and if you visit either of them it is seriously hard to find the bit where you actually start a story or get a clue what you could contribute to. I've made a start on a newsroom redesign, User:Brian McNeil/Newsroom, the most work I've done is into the header and then I need to look at what else I'd put in the page. Read carefully how I've put stuff in the header there - it's "grab the reader's attention, make them think they want to get involved with writing the news, and push all the articles they could work on right now in their face". And make sure that 'start an article' box is right up there.

Fancy having a go at similar? I'd be delighted to be able to steal bits from whatever someone else comes up with. --Brian McNeil / talk 11:21, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As I have said previously, my version of the main page is a work in progress and how I would want it. I think that your version of the Newsroom is looking great so far. --Rayboy8 (talk) 16:33, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No problem (and thanks!), but I would recommend you pick some of the really good elements out of the existing main page. Everyone who says "what about my attempt?" hoping it to get it completely adopted is in for disappointment. If you do that then what happens is any good ideas you come up with will be incorporated somewhere. The main page is probably one of the most-collaborated on pieces we have, and having been involved with Wikinews for over five years now I think it's the best I've seen it. --Brian McNeil / talk 16:59, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wait a minute. The website hasn't reached its fifth anniversary just yet. --Rayboy8 (talk) 17:04, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Signature[edit]

Hi Rayboy! I replied to your query on my talk page. I wasn't sure whether you're checking it for my reply or not (I usually reply to a thread on my talk page, not that of the sender) so i thought I'd just give a heads up. Cheers. Tempodivalse [talk] 19:46, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't review it now. But if I get a chance later, I will do so. Calebrw (talk) 22:17, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please join the discussion, if you can do it attentively, if you have some free 30 minutes?

I'm just afraid that this novice user Wikiwide, the author of the article, being probably a scientist (you just look at the first version of this article), has a very little understanding of what Wikinews is. And probably has lots of other work to do, is not interested, etc. Even the topic of climate contrarians near UNCCC sounds scientific, doesn't it? I think that if you revive this article, it will be very good

  • for Wikinews,
  • for this user, and
  • for the environment
    • (as some of the "skeptics" or
    • just common diesel car drivers can find this article realistic)

Please be informed that only an experienced Wikinews user can manage with such significant and responsible task. Q/0/k 04:14, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To tell you the truth, I didn't actually do anything. But thanks to Brian McNeil if he's watching. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 22:52, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Your custom logo for your user and talk pages appears just fine for me. If you can't get it via [Ctrl]+[Shift]+R then edit the url, append "&action=purge" and submit that. Paint has made somewhat of a mess of the original Wikinews logo; it did not save the gamma levels so it is rather bright compared with the standard logo. Also, text has not been anti-aliased, leaving jagged edges. I recommend w:GiMP, it's almost as powerful as Photoshop but completely Free. --Brian McNeil / talk 17:36, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(Cross posted from User talk:Dendodge per request) I'll do it in Gimp now. Dendodge T\C 20:12, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice job with the Spoken Wikinews, well done of figuring out how to do it. --James Pain (talk) 14:59, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. Should I make some more? --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 15:11, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you like but no pressure. If you do, release it under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License just so you don't get any trouble from the admins. Also slap the spoken wikinews in progress template on the talk page when you're in progress of making one to make sure we don't clash. {{Template:Spoken Wikinews In Progress|~~~|Current date and time e.g. 13:54 Spetember 18 2008}} --James Pain (talk) 15:16, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Blue Moon[edit]

Hi Ray, I am new here the blue moon article was my first. I reformatted the sources according to the style guide. I can't dispute its relevance to any other new article about Mozilla usage figures or eclipses or other celestial phenomenon, except a few prominent news sources deemed it to be worth publishing along with 670 other news sources reporting on the topic from the google news page. As for the length, the two lead articles today are of more or less the same length, yet they are featured on the main page. the article would be irrelevant and useless in less than a day if its not published. the article is feautred on the google news page today, there are currently 673 sources for that story [1].Theo10011 (talk) 19:59, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
