Wikinews writing contest reminder

[edit]
To keyboards!!

Time to get writing!

Points to remember

The competition page is here. Remember, you'll need to move from the newcomers to experienced section as the competition progresses.

Everyone who's new to Wikinews remind yourselves of the article guide and style guide. And, use the Enter an article tab in this template to correctly start your competition articles.

Getting Help

Possibly the fastest way to get help is to look for the regulars in the #wikinews IRC channel on Freenode. See this page for more details. Remember, many people will lurk, connected long-term, but not regularly checking for messages. Please be patient when looking for answers to queries, it can be annoying to see someone ask a question but leave before you notice it.

Review of Twitter goes to the dogs

[edit]

Why did you fail it on newsworthiness? Please explain why you feel it's out of project scope. –Juliancolton | Talk 17:49, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I forgot to mention that, the way it is written, this article appears to look like an advertisement at the moment. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 17:51, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Children's bodies

[edit]

It just so happened that I wrote Dead children found in car in Sussex, UK at the same time as you wrote your article (well, technically a few minutes before). I have added whatever information there was in your article that was not in mine to my article (per the duplicate conventions: My article was started first), and listed for review. I am happy to split the points (it's worth 5, so I would suggest 2 for you, and 3 for me since I created the page and performed the merge) if that's all right with you. Dendodge T\C 19:38, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK, I'll settle for that. --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 19:42, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
We've gone and done it again! 17-year-old boy shot dead in Merseyside, England. you can have the extra point this time, but you have to perform the merge to earn it. =P Dendodge T\C 20:05, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Could you review again this? I added a few English-language sources. --MisterWiki (talk) 20:41, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Also review again Metallica's concert in Chile ends with 120 detainees. While I was adding more sources, you reviewed it. Sorry for the inconveniences. --MisterWiki (talk) 21:33, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Alex Reid wins UK's Celebrity Big Brother 2010

[edit]

Hey, I noticed you were spamming people for help with verifying the information. I don't know which pieces of information are causing a problem, but if you watched the show {{Broadcast report}} is your friend. Dendodge T\C 12:32, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

(copied from my talk page, i responded there as well but wasn't sure whether you were checking it regularly for my response) I'm not sure I completely understand what you want me to do. If you mean that you watched the thing on television, and know that it's correct, but can't find any online sources for it, you could label it as {{broadcast report}} (but make sure to put detailed notes on the talk page about what information in the article was taken from personal observations on the television screen). Hope this helps, Tempodivalse [talk] 14:21, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Portals

[edit]

Pages in the Portal: namespace are, on the whole, deprecated. There was a recent discussion on completely deleting the entire namespace because it continually ends up with really stale articles where the portal has lead articles.

I noticed this through your edits to the NL portal. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:42, 13 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Re: Wikinews portal banner

[edit]

I basically just copied all the images I wanted from Wikimedia Commons, and pasted them into Photoshop. Then I arranged them, and added a green layer with 50% transparency. Over that, I put the Wikinews logo and the word "environment" in Arial (I can't remember the size). Δενδοδγε τ\c 18:13, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

What type of Photoshop is it? Is it possible to download it from the internet for free? --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 18:25, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Only if you do it illegally. I used Photoshop Elements 5. However, the exact same thing can be don in GIMP, which is free and open-source. Δενδοδγε τ\c 18:27, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Can you download GIMP from the internet for free? --Rayboy8 (my talk) (my contributions) 18:35, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the Wikipedia article I linked above has a link to the website. Δενδοδγε τ\c 19:15, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I can try to help you, but I'm not too familiar with GIMP.
  1. Download and install GIMP
  2. Create a new document 826 × 69 pixels in size
  3. Find a few images you like the look of that fit your chosen theme (make sure it's on Commons, as the images have to be freely-licensed)
  4. Copy each image and paste it into the document, then crop and/or resize it to make it fit within the area of the banner. Make sure you keep a record of the source filenames for attribution purposes when you upload the banner
  5. Draw a rectangle in your chosen colour on a new layer, then set the opacity/transparency to 50%
  6. Put a copy of the Wikinews logo on a new layer, resize it so that it is the exact same height as the banner, and move it to the left hand side
  7. Add some text in white Arial at the right hand side. Most of the banners use a font much smaller than mine, but whatever looks good should be all right.
I hope that's clear enough—I'm not too clear about the specifics of GIMP, though this is all pretty basic stuff and it certainly has all the required tools. Δενδοδγε τ\c 22:51, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
If you save the logo locally and open it in GIMP, rather than copying and pasting,it should be transparent by default. If not, Wikibooks is your friend. Δενδοδγε τ\c 23:50, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Looks good to me. The Wikinews logo is slightly stretched, and the background could maybe be a bit darker, but there aren't any major issues as far as I can see. Δενδοδγε τ\c 12:35, 21 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Review style guide

[edit]

Can I ask you to take another look through the style guide and try to keep a lot closer to it? Numbers of twenty or less must always be spelled out instead of using the Arabic characters (0-9).

As with all publications' style guides, there are a lot of little details that may seem annoying, or pointless; the aim is for a consistency in quality and appearance of all published works.

Stephen King's "On Writing", Strunk's book, the Wikinews style guide, and the recommendation in the first; spend at least one hour each day reading, and another writing.

You've made a considerable volume of contributions to Wikinews, your writing has improved quite noticeably, you're at least as good as the people writing the freebie papers you might get on buses and trains (I'm thinking of "Metro" of whatever-you-call-it that ScotRail hands out).

Take it to the next level; step up to broadsheet quality writing – the equivalent of in-depth BBC or Scotsman pieces. The style guide was fairly well formed when I got involved in this project, but if you review my edit history you'd see I basically sorted out the proper archiving process; simultaneously, I revised the style guide and numerous other policies. I like to think I based that on having followed quality journalism.

Wikinews is, currently, tiny. What will carry it through, is an exceptional quality of writing. Using Wikinews as a place to sharpen your writing skills is worthwhile - I was quoted in the CJR on Friday as a "Citizen Journalist Pioneer". Frankly, everyone on Wikinews is; whether or not you're seen as such depends on being appropriately articulate.

So, you might want to do the little extras like subscribe to the mailing list, and lurk in IRC; the latter can get you a lot more feedback on what The Cabalreviewers prefer to see in articles. --Brian McNeil / talk 23:23, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

semi-transparent background

[edit]

(Tempo asked me to respond) There's a couple of ways to do this. The easiest is to make the entire box semitransparent (including the text). You can use the opacity property. For example to make something 50% transparent, use code like

<div style="opacity: 0.5; -moz-opacity:0.5; filter:alpha(opacity=50);"> blah blah </div>

(if you don't want the text not to be transparent, make another div inside that one with the transparency settings reset). opacity is the CSS3 property supported by all browsers, -moz-opacity is the equivelent in older firefox/mozilla, and filter is for internet explorer. Alternative ways of doing this include using a semi-transparent png image as a background (actually you can do really cool effects using semi-transparent pngs - [1]). Also in CSS3 you can specify colours with an alpha channel (so have semitransparent background-color, but i don't think thats widely supported). Hope that helps. Jan 2010 Writing Contest Prize Winner!

[edit]

Hia Rayboy8. You won first prize in the first Writing contest! Congratulations! First prize is 30 Canadian dollars (about the same as 20 quid). Prize transfer via paypal is preferred. If you have a Paypal account, please send me the email address linked to that account via email: Special:Emailuser/gopher65. If you do not have a Paypal account I've decided that I *am* willing to send out personal checks, contrary to what I said in the prize rules section. If you wish to use this option, please send your name, full address, postal/zip code, and country name to the email linked above. Note that this option requires more personal information than paypal (which just needs an email address), so PayPal is the preferred option. Please respond on my user page if you wish to claim your prize, or not. Again, congratulations, and great work! :) Gopher65talk 02:40, 24 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Errrr, if you sent an email, I accidentally deleted it. I deleted my spam folder without thinking. So if you already sent an email, please send it again. Sorry about that. Gopher65talk 00:49, 25 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Just follow the instructions above. If you have a paypal account, email me the email address that you have linked to the account, and I can send the money directly to your paypal account. If you don't have a paypal account then email me a physical address that you have access to I can send a check to in the mail. IE, home address, address of a relative, or, possibly, a workplace, if you're allowed to claim your mail there. Gopher65talk 00:21, 26 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
