How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Temporary change to article length

Hello. As a reviewer, this note is just to let you know we are implementing a trial from February 1 to April 30 to encourage more articles to be published per the outcome of a current proposal. The minimum requirements for article length will be one paragraph of at least a hundred words. At the end of the trial the requirements will return to normal (3 paragraphs etc) and there will be an evaluation discussion about the trial. Happy reviewing! Moving CATs

Hi, please don't move CATs when renaming them. If CAT:Foo is to be renamed to CAT:Bar, create CAT:Bar, add the category to all articles that belong to CAT:Foo, remove CAT:Foo from them and then delete CAT:Foo. Moving categories has high technical cost, and veterans advice against it.
•–• 10:53, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OK, got it. Sorry. --SVTCobra 17:51, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It is possible to do it with pwb -- let me know if any big cats need to be moved, it would be easier that way.

spam accounts.

why is WikiNews getting bombarded with these? Rising79Backfire (talk) 10:57, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, recently a certain category of spam-bot seems to have found a way around our spam filters. I tried to set up a new filter, but it didn't seem to work. That said, I am sure Wikipedia faces many, many more spam attacks. Cheers, SVTCobra 12:36, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Review

Hi SVT, I have an urgent article in the queue, and another about to go stale. Bddpaux is off for a few days and Cromium is normally very busy...if at all possible, could you give them a check? For the breaking review, just go through the talk page, where the sources are linked for every bit of info. I've regularly kept up on all other articles, just really, really need someone to give these a read ASAP. Thanks! --JJLiu112 (talk) 17:51, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I reviewed Court finds UK allowed undervalued Chinese imports into EU. I see Cromium thinks they have time tomorrow for the other one. It might surprise you, but I am not on the Scoop mailing list. Cheers, SVTCobra 23:15, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Guilty verdict for first trial in the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack

Hi SVTCobra/2022 Archive,

I saw that you asked darkfrog if they wanted the article Guilty verdict for first trial in the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack userefied and thought I would let you know (I recently found out myself) that DF is currently busy working on an unblock request, I think. Since discussions at an/ani can be totally exhausting, especially for those who are the topic discussion, I hope you will take that into consideration.

IMO this is a story that many are interested in, so writing well about it is a challenge. There are many competing media outlets. Since the sentencing of Guy Reffitt is not scheduled until June 8 IIRC, I hope you will consider leaving the article available for any wikinewsie who has an interest in this topic. It may just end up providing a feather in the cap for WN. Just my $.02, and thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 03:04, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Darkfrog has already expressed that they do not see "a retread in the cards" which I take to mean they do not wish for it to be userfied. If you are volunteering to carry the baton, let me know. SVTCobra 04:16, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Did you intend to have it in that namespace, SVTCobra?
•–• 11:02, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No, it was accidental. Cheers, --SVTCobra 11:09, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, thought so.

About a nice cup of tea and a sit down

@SVTCobra:I was talking about Wikinews:A nice cup of tea and a sit down, where Wikinewsies type nice things about each other. Nononsense101 (talk) 15:36, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

s/p

Just a head's up, s/p (standard protection) is move admin-only, edit auto-confirmed. Please make sure you enable that. Cheers!
•–• 06:44, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I got confused and others seem to be too. Move we all agree. But when I saw some other stuff in the archives, edit did not seem clear. (Not deep history). However, I think I've gone back to auto/admin as of late. To be fair, we don't even have a guideline on it. --SVTCobra 06:50, 1 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
While we want a wiki to be open-for-all to edit, we have had vandals fucking up published articles (I can email/PM you the technical part -- though you might already know -- not saying it out loud to minimise abuse) when we did not semi-protect. semi-protection was the best compromise we could come up with, with the openness of wiki and not having the articles messed up. If you want, I can change the "s/p" message to say a more helpful message?

Thank you

Thank you for tidying up my references in the article Artificial pancreas for diabetes. It is appreciated. YTKJ (talk) 17:32, 2 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome. The article needs more work. It needs to answer where, when, what and how. News needs to have a focus. The title also needs to reflect same and keep international audiences in mind. Cheers, SVTCobra 17:36, 2 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Small landlords who became homeless during pandemic blame 'broken' system

Hi SVTCobra/2022 Archive,

I thought Small landlords who became homeless during pandemic blame 'broken' system was going to be a one off, but I was wrong.

I just discovered another story about a homeless landlord, this one in the usa according to CBS News. This story is, of course, stale by now, but maybe another story will turn up in the news which will be more timely. Could my the article I started e useriied, or better still kept available in the newroom for anyone who notices an appropriate unstale news? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 23:06, 17 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is there really anything that can be used in a future article other than the link to the CBC article as a source? --SVTCobra 23:46, 17 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I guess not, if it s too much trouble. BTW I created a new page earlier today and used two news stories from Wikinews, one from 2005 and the other from 2007, as references.
I'll try to find another home for the news articles mentioned here. Ottawahitech (talk) 02:20, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I can get the link back for CBC if you can't find it for a future article. SVTCobra 02:50, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary change to freshness

Hello. As a reviewer, this note is just to let you know we are implementing a trial from July 4 to October 4 to enable more articles to be reviewed per the outcome of a current proposal. The freshness window is being extended to about five to seven days. At the end of the trial the window will continue to be at 5-7 days while we discuss whether to adopt the change permanently or not. Happy reviewing! [24Cr][talk] 17:34, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Email??

Do you use your wikinews reporters email account very often??--Bddpaux (talk) 18:21, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I do not. About 15 years ago I had an e-mail account on wikinewsie.org but I lost the login information many, many years ago as I never used it. I am also not on the scoop mailing list, as I think that's only for accredited reporters. And lastly, I do not have a wn-reporters.org account.
You can, however, contact me via Wikimedia mail if you need to share something that cannot be said publicly on Wiki. (For some reason I had it activated on Wikipedia but not Wikinews, but I have enabled it here, too, now.)
Cheers, SVTCobra 22:16, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. What the heck is Wikimedia mail? Maybe I know, but I don't know. LOL!--Bddpaux (talk) 17:06, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming you have a normal Wiki layout, whenever you are on my user page or user-talk page, there will be a list of tools on the left hand side. One of the tools, is labeled "Email this user" ... just click that to send an e-mail to me. Wikimedia handles the in-between stuff, so we won't actually see each other's e-mail address. Cheers, SVTCobra 17:12, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Really hated to see that go stale! Bddpaux (talk) 23:00, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Status

I am stepping away from the project for several days. I am not leaving permanently; I just have some pressing work/personal activities that require my attention for a while. I will not be doing any reviewing for a while.--Bddpaux (talk) 20:02, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please replace the Ukraine map in this template with File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine (unprotected).svg this one? SVT

Looks like Golf article is a no go, I'm not giving up but lack of new findings are scarce. Thank you. Zbagins (talk) 13:21, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be enough information in the sources to expand to a full article, though it is unusual to have an article about a single round of a single golfer when we don't have other coverage. Perhaps writing an article about the 2022 CJ Cup, which you can begin now and finish up on Sunday when the tournament is due to end, would be a better solution. Lowry's extraordinary round can be one element of such an article. Best of luck in whatever you choose to do. Cheers, SVTCobra 14:01, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just afraid I don't think I can finish article without collaboration help. Unfortunately wikinews is short staffed right now. Sorry. Zbagins (talk) 18:20, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I probably should have not started without more information. Zbagins (talk) 18:21, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page protection request

Hi, thanks for reverting those edits on my Talk page. I am an admin on English Wikibooks and these edits relate to LTA on Wikibooks and other projects and many of these IP users are globally banned by WMF. I am constantly getting notifications via email of edits to many of my talk pages. I have protected my home Talk page on Wikibooks. Would you be able to protect my Talk page here to allow only autoconfirmed users to edit it? (I also asked the same thing from User:Mtarch11 as I'm not sure who is more active. (Another) Request

Hello SVTCobra, when you have a chance, could you review my page Ukraine makes major gains as Russia retreats from Kherson? This is my first attempt at writing any report for Wikinews, but I have read through the guidelines and I think it is ready. I would really appreciate it, but I completely understand if you cannot or you're busy. Thanks! Johnson524 (talk) 20:54, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Re: review

Whilst I am aware and beholden to policy which states reviews must be done "a user who was uninvolved in the development of the article", recognising the paralysis which has compelled Wikinews to adopt numerous policy changes, including an extension to the required length and recentness of an article, I am seeking permission to review and make more substantial edits on articles that would be otherwise permitted in an effort to see more published, namely that in the queue presently. Hoping to avoid the accusations of dictatorship with this proposal, it will not extend to articles which I author, and is simply because both yourself, and all other reviewers, appear busy or otherwise uninvolved. JJLiu112 (talk) 22:48, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You do good work. I trust you to do the right thing. So you have my blessing to press forward. Obviously, if friction or other problems arise, we'll have to go back to a more strict adherence to policy. SVTCobra 02:40, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of pages

Hi. I was around on different wikis cleaning up after a cross-wiki vandal that was using the IP-address 108.207.250.138 that I just globally blocked. I noticed that there was only a few active admins on this wiki so I went ahead and deleted all the contributions from the vandal. What I missed before deleting the pages was that this is a non-GS wiki. I hope that you don't mind that I deleted the pages. -- Tegel (talk) 07:55, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I don't mind. These pages are frequently recreated by someone amused by this LTA. SVTCobra 17:16, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Are you OK?

You haven't edited since the 3rd, so I wasn't sure what was going on. Not to pressure you, but there are a lot of deletions needed. Heavy Water (talk) 16:40, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
