Main Page leads

Could you please sight my edits to the lead article templates when you get a chance? The Main Page was all messed up; the rugby article was duplicated and the Pope and collision articles weren't even displaying. Heavy Water (talk) 00:18, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Januari 2023

Hi @SVTCobra: we discuss the problem of deleting the Ngawi category. Then, is there any Ngawi category removed? If there is the latest news, it can be pinned in the ngawi category. How about this ? Who will be responsible for the removal of this news article. If you as an administrator you should support it instead of deleting it. Gaung Tebono (talk) 14:11, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

SVTCobra What steps should be taken after removing the Ngawi category? Are you making a new one or what? Gaung Tebono (talk) 14:12, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I don't think there is a problem in the Ngawi category article. If you delete it, just the news, don't delete the category too. Gaung Tebono (talk) 14:14, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

SVTCobra Or you just make it back. You are the administrator. Gaung Tebono (talk) 14:16, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Category:Ngawi can and will be recreated once there are three (3) published articles about Ngawi. The problem with the articles you created was they were just translations of copyrighted material. SVTCobra 14:27, 14 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Reviewing request

Hello sir, I'm new to this place. Based on staying here for few days I got interacted with you, I got decided to publish articles based on current events (of course it's a part of this community). But one of my articles is still waiting for review, it would be better if you review as one reviewer already reviewed where they can't do this for another time. DRC-B5 (talk) 17:10, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I understand your frustration. We do not have as many reviewers as we used to. I, personally, am very busy in life. There is a chance I could do a review during the weekend. Sorry if that's not the news you wanted to hear. SVTCobra 21:39, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
It's ok, you can take your time. I'm also taking wikibreak for my exams so I will be busy too. DRC-B5 (talk) 07:05, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Protection request

Hi there - could you please (semi)protect my user talk page? If you look at the history the problem will be obvious, i.e. I have a rather dedicated stalker. Appreciate the help, and thank you in advance - Antandrus (talk) 06:04, 26 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Requesting delete on my articles

Please delete my articles as it is not appropriate yet to publish. I'm currently on Wikibreak and my inactivity will increase. So I might not get time to fix it. DRC-B5 (talk) 05:13, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I understand, but I will not delete them for this reason. The work you did was valuable. The articles you created may or may not get published. It is normal if you don't have time to make the requested edits after a review. There is always a chance another editor will pick up the reins and get it published. Thanks for you contributions. I wish you well. SVTCobra 05:22, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wow, uh.. thanks for your suggestion in helping my article better. DRC-B5 (talk) 06:11, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews is a collaboration. Several people worked on the article you started. It would be unfair to them to just delete because you don't have time. But all the same, I am grateful for the time you did have. Cheers, SVTCobra 06:19, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Danglemanglebangle445 was the creator of the "Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Marry" hoax that Chaetodipus deleted, but somehow escaped the banhammer. This is probably the JohnbaJohnba LTA, who has a fixation on creating hoaxes about Biden. Heavy Water (talk) 18:30, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

User:Red-tailed hawk

I made a bad change to the Abuse Filter and Red-tailed hawk got caught in it. Can you remove the autopromote block? Please and thank you. Operator873 (talk) 07:17, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hm. I don't actually know how to manipulate "autopromote" blocks. SVTCobra 12:07, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
What if we gave Red-tailed hawk autoconfirmed status to skip the autopromote? To be honest, I don't know how to remove it either. Operator873 (talk) 22:39, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh! Found it. It's under debugging tools for the filter. I got Red-tailed hawk fixed up. Thanks Cobra! Operator873 (talk) 22:48, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews:Autochecked users

@SVTCobra, can I be eligible to receive this right? M:DRC (talk) 14:53, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

You'll get it when you become a reviewer. I will probably remove Red-railed hawk from the group, also. It was something I did as a work-around. SVTCobra 15:09, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I see then. Thanks for clarification. M:DRC (talk) 15:31, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I think it is, in fact, meaningless because of FlaggedRevs. Thus Red-tailed hawk's recent edits have not been auto-sighted. Heavy Water (talk) 15:35, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

I considered adding that one myself, but it is a trademarked logo, despite clearly not meeting the TOO. Heavy Water (talk) 19:16, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Trademarks do not infringe on copyright. I actually considered uploading the full logo (with the flower or whatever it is) locally like Wikipedia has done as it would be fair use. We have a bunch of trademarked logos which are also not free enough for Commons. See Category:Logos. Cheers, SVTCobra 19:25, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Not copyrighted, yes, but still trademarked. Commons has allowed it this long, so I guess it's considered fine. Heavy Water (talk) 19:27, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Trademarks provide protection from competitors trying to impersonate a product or service. For example, a gas station cannot put the BP logo on their fuel pumps, unless they are actually a BP station. A random drinks manufacturer cannot put the Pepsi logo on their cans. I think trademark laws were established as a form of consumer protection to prevent confusion in the market place. We are quite literally doing the opposite. We use trademarked logos to specifically identify the subject of a news article or category so the reader knows exactly what we are writing about. It is absolutely fine. Cheers, SVTCobra 19:35, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
On a totally unrelated note, could you change the targets of Islamic State, Islamic State of Iraq, and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to Category:Islamic State? Currently, the links in articles old and new to those redirects are broken because the category was deleted. Heavy Water (talk) 06:06, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I know those are overdue. They are quite a bit more controversial than the SEC which I just finished. I will need to research if, in fact, that is an official new name or if there are fractions. When I populate a category, I also review each article to see what else might be in need (other missing categories, local links, and more). It can be quite labor intensive, as you may have noticed if you watch Recent Changes.
Islamic State can be a different kind of Pandora's box. A few years ago, we went through a whole big thing about separating Afghan Taliban from Pakistani Taliban. These organizations are usually not as centralized as media tends to portray them.
So I have been dreading this task and putting it off for now, but I know I will eventually come back to it. Unless I age out, of course. Cheers, SVTCobra 01:04, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I see. For what it's worth, Wikipedia did move their page to Islamic State. I used a foreign=force parameter in that new article, for now. I do pay close attention to RC. Heavy Water (talk) 01:22, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I thank you for your patience. Also, I seem to recall a stupid debate between Obama and Trump if they should be called ISIL or ISIS. Gah! SVTCobra 01:26, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Haha, yeah. Heavy Water (talk) 01:30, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps I should clarify what I said last week about Pi zero and Brianmc; I frequently forget that the latter was actually a few years younger, and I meant that Pi had not been elderly (obviously he wasn't). So I apologize if I made you feel uncomfortable there. Heavy Water (talk) 03:06, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry. I have pretty thick skin. But I am actually in their age range, so I had to comment back. Cheers (I stole that from Brianmc as he almost always said "cheers"), SVTCobra 03:30, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Edit filter

Hi, it looks like it's not quite doing what it is supposed to do. I should have a chance in a little while to try to figure it out. Hopefully it doesn't break my head too much. See also, [1]chaetodipus (talk · contribs) 04:53, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I have sent another message to Leaderboard. Also, I have been waiting on hiding revisions as hidden revisions don't show up when a test on the filter is run. I know. But I am trying to work with a Sysop from another project to develop a new filter. They need to be able to see the offending edits to write the code for the filter. You may have seen me unhide some other ones in the last few days. Cheers, SVTCobra 23:09, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

BTW, are we supposed to add defaultsort to every article upon publication? I saw you did that to an archived one here. Heavy Water (talk) 23:33, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Placement of images

Placing the image above the infobox ensures the story's image, not the infobox image, displays when searching for articles from the main site. For example, searching for this article, File:Dominican Republic (orthographic projection).svg is displayed alongside the headline, not File:Santiago DomRep.JPG. I don't know how important that is in the grand scheme of things, but it has no negative effect. Heavy Water (talk) 15:23, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

That must have something to do with the quote box. In all my years, I have never had MakeLead 2.0 select the image from an infobox. Infoboxes, by tradition and per Wikinews:Article layout in a nutshell#Information boxes go in the line below {{date}}. There was no problem with the last article I published. Cheers, SVTCobra 17:59, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Just now I put Dominican murder draws light to anti-Haitian sentiment (your example) into WN:ML and it chose the photo correctly, even though both the infobox and quote box are before the photo. Try it yourself. SVTCobra 18:04, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Everything goes below {{date}}, certainly, and ML is not tripped up by this. But I am talking about when one goes to and searches for an article name in the box below all the links to the language editions. When I search for this article there, I see the map of Haiti beside the headline. Heavy Water (talk) 00:27, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
OK, I see the same. But is that an issue? Who goes to and searches for the exact title of an article they presumably didn't even knew existed? And if the little thumbnail displayed is a map or a flag instead of a photo from the article are they not going to click on it? In my browser, these are quite small thumbnails. I don't buy it as an argument for changing decades of traditional article layout. But I am open to debate. SVTCobra 00:40, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I personally prefer having the image above the infobox for that exact reason. Is there a reason for keeping tradition for the sake of it? Moreover, when sharing an image on, say, social media, the image that automatically shows will be one relevant to the article rather than, e.g. the Dominican Republic map. If we're talking in terms of decades, an article from even 2013 has the following differences that are minute but now standardised:
  • Manually specifying units rather than the convert template
  • 'Said' without colon afterward
  • Citing DOI
etc. JJLiu112 (talk) 00:56, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I don't know. I spend so much time in the text editor it becomes visually distracting for me when reviewing and/or archiving when I can't find the infobox. I, admittedly, know nothing about how it looks on social media. (Should I add 'boomer' to my user page?) As for the other points:
  • Conversion templates are not mandated by the WN:SG as far as I know. Is it standard to do it manually? In your example, I don't know if one exists for milliliters to tablespoons. I only discovered them a few years ago and like them. I implement them during reviews from time-to-time.
  • The colon or comma is a tough one. IMHO, I feel it really depends on how the buildup is. I think both are grammatically correct. If I may illustrate how I might use them:
    • John walked out the door and said, "Wow, today is sunny."
    • John walked out the door. Afterwards he made a statement which said: "Wow, today is sunny."
  • DOI ... not sure what we are talking about. I googled it and found Digital Object Identifier. Alas, I am no closer to understanding your query.
Cheers, SVTCobra 01:22, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I see there's a DOI in the example you listed. I don't think it is a valid parameter for {{source}}, however. At least not in the documentation. Cheers, SVTCobra 01:28, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
True, because of the nature of news this is a main page-oriented project. It was just something I was told and I don't have an attachment to it myself. Heavy Water (talk) 01:43, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Heavy Water: This is somewhat related. When I updated the leads yesterday, WN:ML kept picking up the second sentence of China's Foreign Ministry sanctions US Representative Michael McCaul instead of the first sentence. I experimented with moving elements around, but it kept happening. In the end, I had to do it manually. Did you have the same problem with that article? Cheers, --SVTCobra 12:37, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

I haven't published anything since that was published but I just tested it and I get the second sentence as well. I know ML cannot understand Wiktionary links and so will stop when it encounters one, but that's obviously not the problem here (and that cuts off sentences, not skips them). Heavy Water (talk) 13:38, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I asked you because I think you were the last to update the leads and it isn't a new story. So are you saying it worked OK earlier? Cheers, SVTCobra 14:04, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Maybe it was JJLiu112. Cheers, SVTCobra 15:03, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
It was me. And yes, that's happened before as well. Not sure why, but as long as we remember to sub out the lede. JJLiu112 (talk) 21:52, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
This is the first time I put China's Foreign Ministry sanctions US Representative Michael McCaul in ML and I had the same problem. Madeleine was the one who published that. Heavy Water (talk) 15:11, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Email stuff

So, I've received no response from Grylidda or Acagastaya on the email situation. I may take steps to set up some sort of web mail situation for us. I am not wealthy and cannot fund a huge expense in that regard for a long period, but we need something. It needs to look/function in a credible way, so, there's that. Let me see where I can go with things. It appears that our WN Reporters email service or whatever is pretty much dead in the water at the moment.--Bddpaux (talk) 14:04, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Have you tried to e-mail them instead of just writing on their talk pages? is live. I do believe Acagastaya is paying for the hosting/registration costs out of their own pocket. Cheers, SVTCobra 15:47, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, could you spell check my article on the expulsion of illegal immigrants from the United States?´.--Jusaset (talk) 04:11, 12 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Looking at Category:Raúl Castro as an example, I think |paren=yes was designed to get the entire image credit onto the same line. With "(Image:" beside the caption and then a drop before the author's name looks worse than having the caption and credit on two lines. Heavy Water (talk) 14:50, 26 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hey, SVTCobra, I know, I have been away from editing for quite some time now, but I wondered, what's the archiving status? MP seems to have way more than usual number of articles in the recent news. (talk) 11:19, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

I have fallen a little bit behind. I try to keep the list the length of the MP in a standard web-browser non-customized layout, so three-to-four articles need to be archived in the current state. SVTCobra 15:00, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

No ArbCom nominees?

As I see, no one is nominated at Wikinews:Arbitration Committee/2023 election. George Ho (talk) 16:53, 17 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

George, please! This and your requests for de-admins are the least of Wikinews' concerns. Nothing has been elevated to "Arbitration" for over twelve years. I beg you to stop enforcing the mundane. Cheers, SVTCobra 05:39, 20 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
We have not had an issue to be resolved by ArbCom for a decade or more. If an issue should arise were it can't be handled by an Administrator, Wikinews will have to seek help from whatever resources the WMF has for Small Wikis. Attempting to cobble together an election or even a committee, given the current level of user engagement, will be a waste of time. I apologize if I was 'snippy' in my first reply. My apologies, I forgot to check Wikinews in the past two days, but this is not a copyright violation. I rewrote the entire thing and did it as uniquely as I could, and I even cited the original article as a source. CheatCodes4ever (talk) 01:08, 29 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Nope, you are incorrect. The text is copy-paste from The Guardian. Literally the whole article. I guess you added some wikilinks, but that does no mean it is not a copyright violation. SVTCobra 01:19, 29 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I did not copypaste it, I rewrote it. CheatCodes4ever (talk) 02:48, 31 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Is that so? Here's the Guardian in blue and your submission in red. First two paragraphs only because it's copyrighted, but I could go on:
Guardian: More than 100 container ships have been rerouted around southern Africa to avoid the Suez canal, in a sign of the disruption to global trade caused by Houthi rebels attacking vessels on the western coast of Yemen.
The shipping company Kuehne and Nagel said it had identified 103 ships that had already changed course, with more expected to go around South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope.

Can you please explain exactly how you consider this rewritten. Thank you.
P.S. The rest of your submission is the same.

For a couple of reasons. First off, I did quite literally rewrite it. I did not copy and paste a single thing from The Guardian article, and if I copypasted anything, it would be the numerical form of the number one (1) from Google, because the button for the numerical one and the exclamation mark is broken. Secondly, I rewrote it how I felt it should be written. Most things I didn't think should be worded differently. I did change a couple of things though, some minor things, but still. Stop wasting my time. Whether you typed it or copy/pasted it, it was word-for-word the same as the Guardian. And it was the case for the entire article. I guess the Guardian just wrote it so perfect that you couldn't even think of anything to change. Well, that's not even how this is supposed to work. I am sorry if you don't get it but you arguing with me is not going to get your bullshit submission undeleted. There are no cheat codes. SVTCobra 00:04, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not to but in but isn't this old news? Anyways it's been deleted now for good reasons by SVTCobra. My two cents worth. Thank you. BigKrow (talk) 01:25, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
