Original reporting

Since our last edition, many articles have claimed original reporting. Here are the most recent:

Several others wrote stories based on television sources. The Wikinews Reports blog activity was mostly related to some of these stories. You can ask any of the blog authors if you want to help out on the blog.

Editor's note

In the last few months activity on Wikinews has continued to decrease to an incredibly low level. There are hardly any new contributers joining and one of our best users, DragonFire1024 (talk · contribs) has gone on Wikibreak. However, some excellent articles are continuing to be written. [edit]

Hi Anon. Is it not a bit risky leaving this even semi-protected? If a vandal made a change which went unnoticed before too long the offending material could be on dozens of new user's talk pages before anyone noticed. I think the risk of a vandal leaving a friendly remark for our new users is too high. I'd suggest you might wish to reconsider the protection level appropriate. Regards. Adambro (talk) 15:45, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

anon site notice

[edit]

You removed the contest in the anon site notice because newbies probably wouldn't care about a contest. While that may seem like the case, I'm not sure its true, as in previous contests we've had people join just for the contest (perhaps because of the cash prize). Bawolff 00:20, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that is why I removed it. If you haven't already, feel free to revert my edits. Anonymous101 :) 14:48, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Undoing my admin action

[edit]

I indef blocked this user, which appears to be a single-purpose disruptive account that has already been indefinitely blocked at Wikipedia at w:User talk:Sonicthehedgehog9000, after consultation beforehand with DragonFire1024 (talk · contribs) who agreed with the decision to indef block. I realize you got some opinions at WN:AAA, but I wish you would have waited to discuss this with me before undoing my admin action and reducing the block on Sonicthehedgehog9000 (talk · contribs). I think this is the second time that you have undone an admin action of mine without waiting to get ahold of me and discuss it with me first - maybe I would have agreed with you and undone my own action myself - or even convinced you of my reasoning. Of course I respect your actions and won't undo it, but myself and DragonFire1024 (talk · contribs) discussed this and agreed that this is a disruption-only account that crossed over from one project to another, virtually all of his contribs are inappropriate and do not contribute positively to this project, and is extremely unlikely to contribute positively in any way in the future. I also see no need for you to write "NOTE TO ADMINS. I STRONGLY OPPOSE THIS BLOCK" in all CAPS, on the user's talk page. Cirt (talk) 18:34, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for undoing the admin action without consulting you. I changed it based on the comments of two other users. The reason I reverted without consulting you is because you were not editing at the time annd I considered it unfair on the user, who may have been trying to become a constructive user. i added "NOTE TO ADMINS. I STRONGLY OPPOSE THIS BLOCK" to the talk page for the same reason. This was before I reverted the block and I did not want to revert without giving other users a chance to discuss the issue first. After two users had supported the reduction I decided to revert it. I know it maybe easier to block possible SPAs but we need more ocntributers and I think it is better to assume good faith and encourage users, especially as it seemed that this user had requested help. As I said on the message on AAA, i have no problem with anyone reverting it if they disagree. If you choose to re expand the block I will fully respect your decision and not make anymore reverts on the matter. Anonymous101 :) 18:53, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I will most definitely not revert your action. I acknowledge that you saw I was not active at that particular time - but I also saw that you did not unblock the user entirely but instead reblocked for 19 hours. Could you not have instead just waited those 19 hours to attempt to get in touch with me? It is quite likely at that point that I would have just undone my own block myself if you and I could have discussed the matter, first. I am sorry but I feel that you could have handled this more appropriately, especially without the "NOTE TO ADMINS. I STRONGLY OPPOSE THIS BLOCK" on the talk page. Cirt (talk) 19:39, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I didn't want to discourage the user from contributing helpfully to the project by making them think they are blocked for ever. As you may have noticed, I removed the "NOTE TO ADMINS. I STRONGLY OPPOSE THIS BLOCK" soon after you first raised an issue on my talk page as I accept that was a mistake Anonymous101 :) 19:40, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for removing your all CAPS comment. Do you still oppose the block at all? If so I will undo the 19 hours block myself. Cirt (talk) 19:49, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I oppose the block but I have seen on AAA and this page that other users are against removing the block. As a result, I think it might be better to keep the block but I will have no problems if you unblock. Thanks for your above comments, I will take them into account when reverting things in the future. Anonymous101 :) 19:53, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Okay well next time instead of undoing my admin actions I would appreciate it if you waited the 19 hours or whatever to try to get in touch with me first. This could all have been avoided by us discussing this first, and then I would have been able to possibly undo my own action. Cirt (talk) 20:01, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK, next time I will leave a note on your talk page instead of reverting without giving you a chance to respond. Anonymous101 :) 20:04, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, it is just that this is the second time I have asked you to do that. Cirt (talk)

FYI, our previous discussion had been about your restoration of copyvio Record 2007 Texas Personal Injury Verdict, although I think at that point you had said in IRC and not on wiki that you would contact me first and try to get my input before undoing an admin action. Cirt (talk) 20:11, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think that discussion was diferent as it was aout an article not a user but I still apoligise as I should have learnt from that. Anonymous101 :) 20:12, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you

[edit]

Thank you for being so civil and kind and polite and patient with me in all of my discussions about various things with you. I really respect those qualities, especially being able to hold true to that on wiki, which is not an easy thing to do, and also is quite rare. Thanks, Cirt (talk) 20:15, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Thanks for helping with the merge. There were a few revisions on Photographs Published of Isolated Native Tribe in Brazil which should be kept (some cleanup work), so the merge isn't complete (you will need to restore those revisions). I tried to remove this template from your talk page, but it resulted in me blanking the template. I am confused. I reverted myself, naturally, but don't understand how that happened. Then I tried to add a comment, but that, too went to the template (I stopped this time at 'preview'). Do you have any idea what is going on? --SVTCobra 00:56, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would have to agree with Anonymous101 that this username is inappropriate. Whilst are our username policy isn't too specific, I think it would be reasonable to suggest that this username could be seen as offensive by some or to be pushing a point of view which could call into question your ability to maintain a neutral point of view as is required when editing Wikinews. User:Concerned-mom userpage deletion

[edit]

I saw you deleted the userpage for Concerned-mom (talk · contribs) as "Advertising or spam: seems like its tryinh to promote somethin". I am curious, how is that page different from Churchofscientologyint (talk · contribs) ? Cirt (talk) 16:16, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

User:Concerned-mom seemed to be saying the benefits of their product and trying to promote it, while User:Churchofscientologyint was just listing contact details. As a result, I believe that User:Concerned-mom should be deleted. If you disagree with my deletion please feel free to restore the page. Anonymous101 (talk) 16:19, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
In that case would it not have been better to at least first try to raise the issue with Concerned-mom (talk · contribs) on her talk page - or at the least to just remove the promotional info from the userpage and keep the contact info - instead of deleting the entire userpage? Cirt (talk) 16:28, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't think raising it on the talk page would be helpful as I doubt the user is going to return. However, I could have just removed the promotional info. I will restore the page without the promotional info now. Anonymous101 (talk) 16:30, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The point is that if an article is not ready then the template should be removed immediately before someone comes along and thinks it is ready. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:27, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK, apologies for not giving you time to add sources. Anonymous101 (talk) 18:29, 22 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

What's Up?

[edit]

What is up with the whole sighted thing? The Mind's Eye (talk) 20:12, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Basically, it's a new way of reviewing articles. Before any edit made by a user who is not in the user group "editor" will have to have there edit's approved by a user who is an "editor" before they are shown to the average reader of Wikinews. Anonymous101talk 20:14, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
So who qualifies as editors? The Mind's Eye (talk) 20:16, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
User's who have been approved by sysops. (At the moment only sysops seem to be getting that ability, but once there's a policy on it other users can be approved - once that policy has been written I'll see if the policy allows me to approve you) Anonymous101talk 20:18, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Is there a general location for discussion on it? I would love to participate. The Mind's Eye (talk) 20:25, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Discussion on this is taking place at Wikinews:Water_cooler/technical#FlaggedRevs Anonymous101talk 20:27, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey there ... an edit of mine just got 'sighted' by me automatically ... does that mean I've been added to the 'editors' list? And ... is there an official editors list out there, or how do you check who's an editor? Sorry if this info is out there, couldn't find it ... Thanks! Olympic highlights: August 9, 2008

[edit]

The highlights look great! Do you intend for one to be created at the end of each day, with a quick summary of each event and an overview of medals? If so, should be great, a nice addition to specific articles if any major events happen. I was wondering how we could cover the regular events, since they probably didn't deserve their own articles, but this looks like the best way. I'm watching the events live so i'll be happy to add some information when you're done. TheFearow (userpage) 09:13, 9 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Georgia wants ceasefire in Ossetia war

[edit]

I'm sorry, why you called my edit "bias"? --Yuriybrisk (talk) 21:56, 9 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I called it bias as it seemed to be promoting the Ossetian viewpoint and it had opinions in it. I removed it after a discussion regarding the edit with other users on IRC who agreed that it did not follow NPOV. I am sorry if I was mistaken and please feel free to re-add it if you disagree (I will not remove it again). Thanks, Anonymous101talk 22:05, 9 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I explained my edit at the comments page here. For now, the article clearly promotes the Georgian viewpoint, which is also bad. Sorry, I'm not a user of IRC, so I can't ask a direct question (if there's a Georgian POV prevailing) there.
P.S.: In a state of an informational war it's difficult to trust the sources on either sides - that's why we just should provide both. If you wouldn't mind I'll try to re-phrase that controversial edit.
Oh, sorry, I've just noticed that Sean Heron done well with the article - it's NPOV is much better now. --Yuriybrisk (talk) 23:41, 9 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

You say "Firstly, here are the reasons we have to review edits
   * To stop vandalism
   * To allow for facts to be verified."

1: Why is that necessary here and not at Wikipedia? 2: Who decided (and by what method was the decision made) that this systemic review process is advisable? Wishmaster68 (talk) 18:39, 16 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
