Lead up to Iraq war: as threats decreased, bombings increased

[edit]

Hi TUFKAAP! The bone head who got off on 3 topics on this was me :) It's a long story, chopped at and other stuff. Lead up to Iraq war: as threats decreased, bombings increased Actually, KevinBass started sources on it and that was the end of his involvement. -Edbrown05 05:24, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Mornin', TUFKAAP!

[edit]

Thanks for the publish After reading the Richmond newspaper's account on the event I decided that what had been on teevee and the AP stories were sensationalism. Granted, the event wasn't wholly nice, and certain people admitted to bad behavior, but it wasn't a riot - more likely a fracas - and the riot squad wasn't dispatched. However, free-for-all might come close, eh?

Anyway, what're your thoughts? - Regards, --Kevin L. Bardon 14:55, 18 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Admin status granted

[edit]

Congratulations, you have just been made a sysop! You have volunteered for boring housekeeping activities which normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops basically can't do anything: They cannot delete pages arbitarily (only obvious junk like "jklasdfl,öasdf JOSH IS GAY"), they cannot protect pages in an edit war they are involved in, they cannot ban users except in cases of obvious vandalism or excessive edit warring (24-hour "cool down" ban). What they can do is delete junk as it appears, ban vandals, remove pages that have been listed on Deletion requests for more than a week, protect pages when asked to by other members, and help keep the few protected pages there are up to date.

Note that almost everything you can do can be undone, so don't be too worried about making mistakes. You will find more information on Wikinews:Administrators, please take a look before experimenting with your new powers. Drop me a message if there are any questions or if you want to stop being a sysop (could it be?). Have fun!--Eloquence 13:04, 26 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

RC patrolling, article tags

[edit]

Wanted to say, you're doing yeoman work watching the recent changes. Great job watching for issues!

When you tag an article though, you don't need to put a whole bunch of different tags on the top of the article itself. One will do. Then explain why the tag was applied on the discussion page. If there are more issues than are covered by a single tag, add them to the discussion page, to expand on what you say there about what needs to be changed to improve the article. - Amgine/talk 05:06, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

yeah, like that person said!! -Edbrown05 05:11, 5 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Block of International

[edit]

Hi, would you be so kind as to list the 3 RRs at the admin page where Chiacomo set up the template[1]? 3 RRs have been such a big discussion issue on the water cooler, I think that would help. Neutralizer 18:00, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm also interested in seeing this violation listed for review. There has been some discussion on listing of violation being a "should" item with only MrM dissenting on a proposed wording on the issue. --Brian McNeil / talk 21:05, 18 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

By removing those images you are breaking wikinews's archives Brian | (Talk) | New Zealand Portal 18:28, 20 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I wasn't complaining just commenting. It annoys me when commons goes and delete images (Plus as you had no edit summary, how are other users/ new users to now what was going on) Apart from that thanks sparring the time to do it. Unblocking of MrM

[edit]

The three revert rule policy page provides an exception to the three revert rule for "simple vandalism". It states "This exception does not apply to reversions of well-established users just because you consider their edits to be "vandalism." Simple vandalism is indisputable—don't confuse it with edits which you simply disagree with." I don't see how the edits that MrM reverted can be considered simple vandalism. Can you please reconsider your decision to unblock MrM in light of this? - Borofkin 04:47, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

"There are some who never manage to distinguish between their own political views and NPOV...like StrangerInExile"

[edit]

If you are going to say things like that about me, back it up: I challenge you to find edits of mine on articles that justify such a statement. I am an activist on various fora, an editor on Wikipedia and a jounalist here. It bothers me that you would assume because I am an activist on certain fronts that this makes my commitment to NPOV somehow suspect. The fact that you went and sprung MrM from the block after a spree of blatent POV-warring on his part— under cover of administrative authority no less!— makes it hypocritical. Actually, I've done the reverse: I've dragged you into my problem with him. You talked your way out of a block, on blatently specious grounds. We can squab about that, but right now I'm taking him to task for letting you do it, and suggesting what he said above. StrangerInParadise 21:55, 21 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rfda

[edit]

This is a message to inform you that I have added every administrator to the Rfda section on WN:A. This is not personal and I feel as if the community, who did not have the option of voting for or against most of the administrators, should be able to choose who they want to be in charge. I also want to say that I value everyones work on this site and I know that everyone does their best. I hope that none of you will take this personally and I hope that all of us will continue to work together. Jason Safoutin 12:20, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Congressional edits story

[edit]

Hi Tufkaap--I see you were one of the earliest editors working on this investigation. Could you tell me more about the discovery of, research concerning, and group response to anonymous edits being made to Wikipedia from a variety of government offices. For example: What was the event that brought it to your attention? Did you enlist collaborators, and if so, how? Did you come to any general conclusions about protecting Wikipedia from anonymous POV-pushers in the future? I'm giving a short talk at Wikimania about the Congressional edits, the "Swiftboating" edit war, and similar mass-arrivals of new edits. w:UserTalk:Betsythedevine65.96.127.228 18:57, 2 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

myskin.css

[edit]

I just wanted to mention, Wikinews:custom skin is a php skin. For it to be enabled, it would have to be done by developers, and it would appear in special:preferences under skins. special:mypage/myskin.css is the css when you select myskin from the special:preferences skin menu. (Myskin sort of has a lot of unstyled html in,good for modifying the apperence with css. For example I sometimes use an egyption skin i found in my user:Bawolff/myskin.css) Bawolff 20:13, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Recent archiving

[edit]

When you just recently protected some pages for archiving, you used cascading protection, which also protected the infoboxes and any other templates used on the page. You probably should turn the "cascading" option off. You also didn't add the {{archive}} template to the page, so people might not know why it is protected. Just letting you know. :) —Zachary talk 21:44, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

WN:ARCHIVE says that articles have to be no less than 10 days old before archiving. You are archiving stories that are less than a week old (eg. Hawaii entertainer Don Ho dies at 76) --SVTCobra 21:58, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Where did you get this image. It needs source information. --SVTCobra 01:30, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Having added the CC-BY-ND 2.0 licence tag, I would draw you're attention to the text that is part of that template. Adambro 09:11, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Because CC-BY-ND is not a permitted licence I've found a freely licenced similar alternative and changed the article. I understand you contacted the photographer of the image you added and so you might like to ask him to change it to CC-BY or CC-BY-SA so we can use it as it was a better image. Obtaining mugshots

[edit]

Hello,

I help maintain the following article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Channon_Christian_and_Christopher_Newsom

A photo of the accused murderers was recently removed due to questionable copyright information. Fortunately criminal mug shots are public domain and thus open source and can be readily uploaded to Wikipedia. The only problem is I won't be able to obtain mug shots of the accused murderers' because I lack a reporters credential. Another wiki editor referred me to WikiNews and suggested I ask an accredited member for assistance in obtaining mugshots

The images in question can be found on this commercial news site, though they can't be copied due to copyright laws.

http://www.volunteertv.com/special/headlines/5686076.html

Would you be willing to contact the Knox County Sherriff's office to obtain these mugshots?

http://www.knoxsheriff.org/

It should be fairly easy for you, since you are an official WikiNews reporter. Graham Wellington 18:58, 22 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hello TUFKAAP,

The image you created for USA 2008 presidential elections has words "ELECTIONS 2008" on it. Since there will be many elections in 2008 (e.g. in my country we will have at least 2 or 3 this year), it would be nice to add something like "USA ELECTIONS 2008" to the image, just to make Wikinews appear less US-centric. I know there is a President Seal on the image, but it's not the first thing that one sees when looks at the picture. Could you possibly fix it, or post a SVG somewhere, so I could quickly take care of it? Thanks. --89.216.185.76 13:27, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
