Welcome

Zachary Hauri, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, you can ask them at the water cooler or to anyone on the Welcommittee, or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! --Brian McNeil / talk 12:47, 14 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!!!!!!! :P --Symode09 17:30, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sports

Hi there, and welcome again to Wikinews. I see that you have written at least one baseball article, and i am please to see another sports writer on here such as myself. We are currently trying to coordinate sports writers on the Wikinews:Sports coverage page, so if you would like, you may sign your name there and add some thoughts as to how we should develop the Sports Portal Thank you. —Dark_Squall 02:55, 3 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Article categorisation

I think I've got all the articles you listed to be categorised. Thanks for knowing how to set it up to make it easy with AWB.

A secondary point is that we'd like to see someone from the pool of sports writers being an admin. You guys seem to be working well together, and a nomination from among you would probably get a lot of approval. That way you'd have someone from the community you seem to have built around the sports portal as a bridge to the rest of the wiki and someone who can do tasks like the re-categorisation. Actually, I'd say if you all stick around long enough you'll all end up admins, we're pretty liberal in giving that privilege to those who act in good faith. --Brian McNeil / talk 14:21, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a lot for doing that. I'll probably have a few more of these lists for you as I start working on the Hockey portal. I'm wondering how we could go about updating the DPL extension here; having more flexibility would surely be beneficial, though we would have to confirm that a newer version would be as stable (or more stable even) before that could be done.
I would gladly accept an admin nomination if someone feels as though I deserve the nomination, but I've only been active for less than a week, so I might not be ready to take on any added responsibilities yet.. but we'll see how things go after I get settled in a bit more. I would gladly support a nomination for Dark Squall; he's been a great help to me, and sports news in general. —Zachary talk 02:06, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

On sports articles

I want to say you are doing an excellent job on the sports articles. We don't have many users who are as insiteful about sports as you are. I am glad to see such a wide variety of sports articles being written and I hope that you continue the great work. :) DragonFire1024 01:37, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a lot, I'm just glad to help out in any way I can :). —Zachary talk 01:45, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was just about to come and say the same thing DragonFire did, your doing great, and the last one you did on th 7-2 Twins win was certainly the best yet. I only changed 1 word! keep up the good work. —Dark_Squall 01:38, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
On the MLB template...is there any way you can make the two boxes on top of each other as opposed to side by side? DragonFire1024 06:45, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Admin votes

User:Dark Squall is up for admin, you might want to vote and let other sports contributors know.

I would have nominated you too, but you've not yet hit 500 edits. OTOH, I think you're doing a good job of building the community's trust and its just a matter of time. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:59, 7 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

NHL teams, fans ready for Stanley Cup Playoffs

Hey there, i just read your recent article. I would say its ready for publishing, but i think a name change is in order as the article doesnt actually talk about the fans. I know its still in developement so you may be adding this info, but I would like to see a more descriptive name. Good article though. —Dark_Squall 01:50, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Info for a story?

I came aross a website that had information about one Republican's campaign falling to the ground.

Link to Info

Is this info good for a story on wikinews or not?

Hey there bud, i would like to start by saying the tables are fantastic, and the updates are very quick, thank you for doing the work with the bot. The template noted in the title is another league i would like to keep a table of. The site for the table info is [2]. I didnt bother actually making the page yet, im not sure exactly how your thing works, but you know what your doing :). Informative story names

Hi. Sorry for mixing up football and baseball. When I see a meaningless story title, I try to improve it. To avoid having the story title improved by someone clueless like me, just use a story title that can be understood by those in Canada, the USA, Ireland, England, India, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand. Blue Angels

Hi Zachary. I'm the guy who wrote the first version of the Blue Angels article. Can I ask you why it disappeared altogether from the first page and the present article does not quote a substantial portion of the previous information which is still accurate? I understand improving on an existing article or adding a new one to the old, but why erasing that? I thought i was honest and true to the sources. --Nusbit 10:27, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

No problems. Nice article, by the way. —Zachary talk 04:59, 26 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

some of your edits to print edition related pages seemed pretty radical. Have you checked them out with User:Cspurrier? --SVTCobra 02:45, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, I haven't discussed this with Craig yet, but I think the only change I really made was removing the print editions from Category:January and Category:2007, and put them in Category:January 22, 2007. I don't think that's radical at all.
I also moved the license into a template. Not radical IMO. But I'll let Craig know about these changes. —Zachary talk 03:00, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use

I've gone ahead and agreed with your deletion request for my particular image because the images that ended up in the article accomplish a similar task without raising copyright issues, but I would like to talk about putting multiple images into a single image for informational purposes in the future. I'd like to have the ability to take images from multiple sources, credit them, and at the same time receive credit for putting them in the same image (hence my use of CC-by-2.5). People do tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to copyright, and for good reason, but I strongly believe that fair use exists so that people can communicate original ideas using copyrighted material. Images containing images from multiple sources can also save time for the reader. --Omaryak 21:47, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am the copyright holder for that thorough Spider-Man 3 article I just posted. What should I be doing differently so you don't think I'm infringing on my own copyright?

'People' template

The layout at Jimbo's Category page using the {{People}} template is not working right. I agree that a image could and should be available.

I'm no expert a grids/tables. Seems to me there should be a way to set the grid/table up with 2 rows. The 1st row would have two columns: left side 'Latest reports' and right side an 'Image'. The 2nd row would contain all the sister project links. Thoughts? -Edbrown05 06:53, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I like that idea. You should post it to Template talk:People to see what more people have to say about it. There was a lot of work done yesterday on the template, and I think the right side is now too long for the left side.
Actually, the way I wish it would've been laid out is with the image on the left, the article list in the middle, and the sister links on the right, but it was probably bad for the people with lower screen resolutions. I think your idea would be a great improvement. —Zachary talk 07:04, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of 3 columns, and since posting my earlier comment I have discovered that the sister links, by default, want to stack up in a column on the right. In other words, give them a row on a table to themselves, and they still stack up in the arrangement of making themselves a column. Which sort of defeats the idea and sets the corse to what you are saying: 3 columns. -Edbrown05 07:17, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

A different question

Hi Zachary,

I'll ask you a different question, but not on WN:FA. With my questions I was trying to find out if people have an international perspective because I appreciate that in editors, although it has little to do with adminship.

Anyways, hears another answer, like in Jeopardy you need to give the question (What is...?).

A global network of independent journalists and an alternative media outlet which takes a generally left-wing perspective on political and social issues. It is closely associated with the global justice movement, which criticizes neo-liberalism, NAFTA, and the World Trade Organization. It is centered on an open publishing process that allows anybody to contribute.

thanks for helping with the archiving. but please do not modify[3] articles (except for minor things like fixing a typo or spelling), even if the article does not conform to current "standards". thanks for the prompt fix, so no harm done either. i can well understand the temptation to "fix" an article while archiving, but we have good reason to desist from doing that. –Doldrums(talk) 08:51, 11 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Go ahead and change things like == References == to == Sources ==, I have a number of global replacements in my archiving setup for AWB to catch things like that and quotes from MS Word. --Brian McNeil / talk 07:44, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to the latest edition of the Wikinews Bulletin! This week, you may have noticed a slight change in the design. This was because I felt that as a different project, Wikinews should not copy the Wikipedia Signpost. If you disagree, be bold and make your opinion known on the talk page.

  • The Polish Wikipedia on DVD has finally been released and is available for purchase in shops in Poland as well as online. The release contains 239 000 articles, 59 000 images and the dedicated Java software WikiMiner. The DVD costs 39 PLN (~ 10 EUR, $14). Soon the 8 GB image of the DVD will be available for download as well.

Sports on the main page

Hey Zachary, I added links to your various automatically-updated templates to the main page (with many commented out as the season ended). Also, when you have your bot ready for those three things that don't have templates yet, be sure to update the main page. Thank you for such a cool feature! Portal:Football

Hey. I see you have a SportsBot. Can I just alert you to the changes at Portal:Football. It is currently undergoing a redesign and will be finished soon. We just need content now to fill up the pages. If you can help, or know anyone that'd like to help that'd be great! Some teams will have their own pages if reporters will update their team's page. Site activity
  • Wikinews is approaching 10'000 articles. Spread the word!
  • A Wikinews:World News Quiz has been set up after the Quiz extension was added to our MediaWiki repertoire. Users who take the quiz are invited to post their scores on the talk page.
  • Substantial changes have been made to the main page recently. TheFearow has implemented a dynamic news ticker - see Wikinews:Ticker for information and the template at Template:Ticker. Currently only available for almost every browser that isn't IE. IlyaHaykinson added the Template:Lead article with large image to the main page, which is currently the subject of a poll. A complete main page redesign is also being discussed.
  • User:Cspurrier has kicked off an ongoing mailing list discussion on the topic of setting up some kind of official organisation to issue press cards and support our off-site activities, like a Wikinews Chapter.

Calbot and protected date pages

I've used cascading protection (full protect as you can not semi protect with cascade anymore) to protect all date pages included in {{Latest news}} to prevent vandalism. Since calbot edits those pages before they appear on the main page, all should be fine, but just wanted to mention that i did that just in case anything bad could happen from it. SportsBot and Template:NFL

Hi Zach, Just a minor problem. The standings table for the NFL includes little letter codes, like x-, y-, and z- to indicate teams that have clinched playoff berths or division titles, etc. The effect has been that SportsBot does not link those teams. Cheers, --SVTCobra 22:59, 12 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Idea for irc/wiki bot

I was wondering what you thought of this idea for a bot.

on irc, you type:

! fix-test some test page

Bot deletes the test page, and gives user a {{subst:test}}.

The only problem with this i can see is that I have no idea how secure irc is, so bad person could do bad things.

Thanks, Bawolff. Bawolff 06:44, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Bot

Hi Zachary,

I'm just curious, do you plan on moving all the bot pages here. If so, here are the lists I'm aware of from the receiving end.

w:User:Wikinews Importer Bot

Regards, RichardF 15:36, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I only did a few of them, since they were in the category namespace and were being treated as empty categories. The rest of them can stay, but I wouldn't mind having them all as a subpage of Wikinews:Wikinews Importer Bot. (Zachary) 22:19, 24 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
From my perspective, the bot is just a tool not a topic. It would have make more sense to me to move the category subpages to portal subpages. In fact, if you don't object, that's what I'll do. I'll also put back the Wikipedia pages to the topical system they were designed to be. RichardF 00:04, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews player of the day.

Wikinews player of the day appears to be POV and is therefore not permitted in Wikinews articles.--Anonymous101 Talk 07:17, 1 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I disagree. The player of the day section highlights the player who made the most significant contribution to their team, or the one who had the greatest statistical performance. Likely candidates would be the player who scored the most points for the day, a goaltender who stopped a large number of shots and didn't allow any goals, or a player who scored decisive goals which led to their team's victory. It's a matter of fact, not a matter of opinion. (Zachary) 08:27, 1 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
In case someone else wants to do something like that for another sport you need to define the rules you apply somewhere. A points system based on positive points for goals, shots on goals, goals blocked (for the keeper), and negative points for being sent off would probably work. --Brian McNeil / talk 08:33, 1 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I find the rules acceptable to make an NPOV player of the day section--Anonymous101 Talk 07:40, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

NHL/Stanley Cup coverage

How would you like to apply for accreditation as a sports writer and get press access to NHL games? I've floated this idea to Nirva from the NHL following an OTRS ticket to the press queue. His email is NMilord at nhl dot com, and he is the "Director, Entertainment Publicity" for the NHL.

His key interest is getting stuff up on Wikipedia - i.e. he'd like the upcoming Stanley Cup featured on the main page. The email I'm currently drafting points him to Wikinews' Portal:Ice hockey and our coverage of the 2007 tournament.

I'm certain were you to apply for accreditation on this you'd get it, and likely get access to games you could travel to via this guy at the NHL.

Interested? --Brian McNeil / talk 09:39, 11 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I emailed him the other day, he said I could be put on the distribution lists for announcements and press releases.
Accreditation would be nice, I am not far from my local team, so I can easily get to the arena if there's anything interesting going on there. I'll put up an AR sometime after I do today's NHL news. (Zachary) 18:08, 11 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Signature deletion warning

Please be aware that I intend to delete the signature template {{ss}} which you use per the deletion request. I'd also note the comments at https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11414 by one of the WMF developers, Brion Vibber, who says that "templates are disallowed in sigs" in response to the suggestion that no being able to use a template signature is a bug.

I'd therefore ask that you immediately update Special:Preferences to remove the template from your signature. By using this template, you have noted that having long signatures as part of a comment can be a nuisance. I'd therefore suggest that you greatly simplify your signature and carefully consider whether multiple links and different text styles really are appropriate.

I will delete the template after I've run my bot through the pages which it is used and substituted it to maintain the signature as per the template. Adambro - (talk) 19:56, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Zachary! I'd like to acquaint you with an encoding error with it.RSS. IRC bot to watch Review category

Hey there. As the brains behind the Wikilinker bot, I was wondering whether it would be possible to create a bot similar to the helpmebot in #wikipedia-en-help, that watches a category on a wiki and reports on it in IRC. In particular, I think it would be helpful if we had a bot that listed articles in Category:Review. I'm not sure if it would be better to send the output to #wikinews or one of the side channels, though. What are your thoughts? Chris Mann (Say hi!|Stalk me!) 12:36, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I tried to catch you on #wikinews, but it seems you're not at the moment. We were talking about using Wikilinker on #wikipedia-fy, though it's not normally all that busy. But that got me thinking: Wouldn't it be possible to localise Wikilinker? I took a quick look at the code, and from what I've seen the commands are already in a list, so that's easily swapped. Would it be a matter of gathering the repsonses, and printf-ing the arguments into them for output? Mysha (talk)

Noticed that Sportsbot hasn't updated {{NHL}} since 31 Jan 2009... is a restart needed, or is the bot on hiatus for a bit? DL+1613 (talk) 01:34, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well the bot relies on me updating a scoreboard on a database every night, which unfortunately has not been happening lately. I'll get it up to date though pretty soon. (Zachary) 04:46, 17 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

SportsBot

I added

<noinclude>
[[Category:Sports templates|{{PAGENAME}}]]
</noinclude>

to the templates the SportsBot is using, but they got deleted when the bot visited the pages. I was wondering if it could leave the categories in place somehow? I'm trying to get rid of all the uncategorized templates. Thanks! (You can reply here; I'll follow this page.) Cheers, Van der Hoorn (talk) 09:59, 2 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Are you reading your talk page at all? A response would be nice. Cheers, Van der Hoorn (talk) 12:07, 8 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I don't think this user is very active here currently - he has only a few edits in the past year. Perhaps you could try emailing him if he is still unresponsive, he has email enabled. tempodivalse 13:23, 8 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I still lurk around in IRC all the time. And I do get emails for talk page changes. I've just been away from home for the past week or so..
But I did make the change you asked for. (Zachary) 18:20, 9 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I noticed it, thanks! Cheers, Van der Hoorn (talk) 01:50, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

A penny for your thoughts

Okay, not really, but I am requesting your participation in the following Water Cooler Discussion: OR and Broadcast report. The discussion involves the need for specific policy concerning how Original Reporting relates to information recieved from a broadcast report of an event. This can include both news-style reports and non-news reports, such as a sporting event. Thanks and again, please share your thoughts on this so we can get as many people involved as possible, especially since this relates to an important topic such as OR. —Calebrw (talk) 05:17, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

{{CCC}}

Can you update the Sports bot to general the new Category:Association football. Thanks Calebrw (talk) 21:05, 25 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Zach, please set it back to Category:Football (soccer) per this DR. Thanks. --SVTCobra 23:33, 24 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bot discussion

As someone listed as having an active bot I would like to draw your attention to the following issue. This may not affect you unless your bot edits sighted pages - eg in the Template namespace - but as a bot operator your input is likely to be better informed. --Brian McNeil / talk 09:30, 16 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
