Welcome

Jcart1534/Archive1, welcome to Wikinews! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Our key policies - if you read anything, read these!

Here a few pointers to help you get to know Wikinews:

There are always things to do on Wikinews:

By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~), which produces your name and the current date. Welcome

thanks for writing the article on the Kraft cookie recall, i think the article's very well written. particularly impressed as this seems to be ur second day "on the job". looking forward to more such articles from you.  — Doldrums(talk) 14:08, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Excellent work

Well done with the Canadian tax returns article - very well written. Well done!!--MarkieTalk 11:50, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Next time, diff sources

Just so you know for next time, we usually don't do the sources how you did them on Computer glitch delays online tax filing in Canada. We usually just list the sources, and don't reference them specifically, like Fijians in New Zealand urged to protest NZ's involvement in Fiji.

Good work though, and it was placed on this website: http://www.huliq.com/14105/tax-filing-in-canada-delayes-due-to-computer-glitch. --Nzgabriel | Talk 03:05, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

UK naval crew describe their capture and detention by Iran

Nice work on this article. Thumbs up. --SVTCobra 22:03, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your comments on the "Gates" article

I am really not in a position to reflect on your comments in the talk page of US Defense Secretary evaluates Iraq and the political climate as far as the budget details go. This is outside of what I was there to do, which was to resolve the NPOV (or is that POV) issue.

I suggest you re-post those comments or move them into a new sub-section of the page. I am afraid that otherwise they might go un-noticed. They might seem buried in my lengthy prose.

I am pleased that you felt the same way as I when you wrote UK naval crew describe their capture and detention by Iran.

Terms not released?

Hey there, on your article about Pavel Datsyuk's (sp?) contract, i do believe the terms of his contract have been released. I was watching a show on TSN yesterday, and it announced that the deal averaged out to 6.5 million per year. I cannot remember if this is completely correct however, so if you see the terms anywhere please add them to the article, thank you. —Dark_Squall 14:22, 7 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

possible crosswiki impersonation

an account with your username has been created at wikiquote, looks like it is part of an attempt at cross-wiki impersonation. assuming this account was not created by you, you should notify the Wikiquote admins to either block the account or turn it over to you. best, –Doldrums(talk) 22:43, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Doldrums. I contacted the admins. Hopefully they will fix it up for me. Jcart1534 23:28, 5 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hello, Jcart1534. I am a Wikiquote sysop (q:User:Jeffq) and have blocked q:User:Jcart1534 at your request. (You can confirm both statements by checking the Wikiquote block list. If you don't know how to do this, go to Wikiquote, click on "Special pages" in the "toolbox" section in the left margin, then click on "List of blocked IP addresses and usernames". You should see my block of your hijacked name there.) If you wish, you can request that the name be reassigned to you by a Wikiquote bureaucrat. (Currently Kalki is our only one.) You might also want to register your name on any other prominent Wikimedia projects to avoid this problem in the future. I hope this helps. ~ Jeffq 01:30, 6 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Jeffq. I will contact Kalki and ask that q:User:Jcart1534 be reassigned to me. I am posting this request on my Wikinews talk page at the same time as I am contacting Kalki. Thanks again for your help. Jcart1534 11:35, 6 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikinews Video

Heya!

I see you have previously shown some interest in Wikinews Video Edition and, need your help. As you may already know, the projet is is need of assistance - we have finished all the graphics and need to start actually brainstorming ideas for the first news story. We will cover one news story and, will cover it with much depth - the story will go for 15-20 minutes. We are looking for something which is not of direct interest to the media (ie. tax increases or politics) but rather, a heartfelt or deep story. Could you please help to collaborate and brainstorm here.

thanx, USer:symode09

I'm sorry for any misunderstanding cause, this was produced as a proof/test - not serious. If you an admin, you might want to delete the page. All names are fake. Apologies, Symode09 12:58, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

"I would like to keep on top of vandalism where I can."

The difference between a NPOV report, and POV report, is kind of like pornography: maybe you can't define it, but you know it when you see it. In a similar vein: the difference between removing vandalism, and sanitizing content, is something you know when you see it.

I don't believe any mandate exists here at Wikinews for "sanitizing" content like you did with the Comments page at the Big Pig story. Your own comment here deleted the previous comments content here.

Three weeks into your new admin tools and you are vaporizing Comment page content? -Edbrown05 06:28, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please provide me with an explanation for your actions on that Comments page. -Edbrown05 07:22, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
WTF are you talking about, Ed? I was the first one to create a "Comment" page for that article. Before you shoot your mouth off (pun intended), why don't you have a look at the date/time stamp? I created the Comment page and added my comment at: Revision as of 23:54, 26 May 2007. All the other comments followed that date/time. Your comment clocked in on May 27!!! And one of the linked examples you "highlighted" for me shows that you deleted your own comment! I didn't sanitize squat. Your accusation against me is nonsensical and unfounded. I want an apology. Something else, if you look at the History of the actual article, something got buggered up with the history, probably on one of dozens of name changes, which had nothing to do with me. It shows the first entry as being from Doldrums at 07:37, 27 May 2007 (which is obviously not the start date of this article). Jcart1534 10:49, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Alright, idiots played with this article, and I don't care what you say about the time table BeHE was IMO the first person to comment on the article, oh FU, you are full of shit too.... -Edbrown05 11:20, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Actually, you are so full of shit I can't believe you have the audacity to lie like that. -Edbrown05 11:35, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
So, for that reason, I will refer you for de_admin. -Edbrown05 11:40, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Refer me for de-admin because you are a moron? That is rich! Knock yourself out! lol. You say "in your humble opinion" that you are going to ignore the date/time stamp and believe BeHE was the first to comment!!! BeHE commented at 08:51, 27 May 2007. I commented at 23:54, 26 May 2007. And then another person commented. Then the page that we left the two comments on got replaced with a different Comments page. Maybe I should blame you for that? What are you smoking? Whatever you have got cooking in your brain has nothing to do with me. I had two edits on the Pig article. I added the image from Commons and I created a Comments page with a funny comment about how big the pig was. That is it. Period. Please take your conspiracy theories somewhere else. Accusing me of lying? For what!!!! I don't even know what you are talking about!!! Jcart1534 12:49, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

like most problems Ed discovers, i'm guessing this one will turn out a mare's nest too. in the meantime, i'd like to ask both Ed and Jcart to remain civil. there is no point escalating this non-dispute. –Doldrums(talk) 14:05, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I owe you an apology Jcart, so here it is... I forgot that page renamining does not move 'Comment' pages by default, only 'Article' and 'Discussion' pages are moved automagically when a page is renamed. Maybe there is more to it than that but I don't care at the moment. Anyway, sorry, from my viewpoint nobody will know what they are talking about if history is get destroyed. That is why I became so... well, awful adjectives apply. -Edbrown05 08:20, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the apology, Ed. I really appreciate it. And I have to apologize as well for the language I ended up using. Not the best etiquette! Sorry. Jcart1534 10:29, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Too many sources

Thanks for your message about too many sources. Indeed, for a two paragraph brief, six sources was overkill, and redundant. They all said the same thing, and had the same quotes. I guess an argument I would make, though not necessarily for that particular brief about Thaksin, is that "extra" sources might encourage another editor to expand the article at some point. Also, links tend to go dead, so the redundancy isn't necessarily a bad thing. Still, your point is taken. I'll have a closer look at the policies. Thanks again! Wisekwai 19:37, 12 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Right, promise to try. Half the problem is despite my time over on 'pedia I still have this idealistic view whereby all the common possibilities actualy do redirect where there meant to. Some chance, I guess. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 06:15, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Much thanks

Much thanks, I may not do many - but those events I cover, I do like to be exacting and perfectionist ;) On that note...I wonder if you happen to know how one reduces the deadspace between the photo caption and the Credit line. I used a simple html "sup" tag, but that didn't make much difference in reducing dead space. Any help would be great. Sherurcij 03:01, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aung San Suu Kyi

Hi. I have made a request, on Commons, to delete commons:Image:AungSanSuuKyi.jpg, because I think the person who originally has uploaded it on WP-EN has made a mistake and did not have the right to release this image into the public domain.

I have added the commons:Template:idw on your Commons talk page, but have seen you seem to prefer contact here.

I'm afraid you will have to find any other image and, if you want to use it on Wikinews, with fair use. Hégésippe | ±Θ± 11:12, 23 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've found that only beacause I was awaiting for a free image of ASSK (we can't work with fair use on French Wikinews, and I've already written two articles in the last weeks about ASSK). So, when I've seen in the Wikinews-RC on IRC, for a few hours, that a Commons image was available on Commons and added in Wikinews Shorts: June 23, 2007#Myanmar democracy party formally asks to see Suu Kyi, I couldn't make anything other that to have a look first on WN-EN, then on Commons... and be disappointed smiley. Hégésippe | ±Θ± 16:48, 23 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sure, but as you see, CommonsDelinker has already tagged the description page, 20 minutes after your upload, as 'untagged file', and there is a big threat for a quick deletion after seven days...
I'm looking to the Wikinews:Fair use page and have some difficulties to understand how, on WN-EN, you can 'sail' between the reefs of 1°) Publicity photos (in the whitelist), 2°) photos produced by competing news organizations (which seem to be forbidden).
With those restrictions, for example, I think that the AP/Wide World photo seen on other Department of State article (http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/pix/b/eap/57392.htm) can't be used on Wikinews. And the fact that Ms Aung San never went out of Myanmar since more than twenty years makes problem to find any free images or images with few restrictions. The image used on DoS article about 'Address by Aung San Suu Kyi at the NGO Forum on Women, Beijing, China (1995)' presents no source or author and it's why I think there is a big threat ont it on Commons.
And hope that any possible Wikimedia user travelling in Myanmar would be allowed to see Ms Aung San during her house arrest (and then would be allowed to create a photograph with a right license) seems to be a dream...
It's possible that some images of Aung San Suu Kyi exist, with compatible licenses, but the problem is to search... and to find. Hégésippe | ±Θ± 04:25, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

It was "dead" in there tonite. Earlier, I talked away about a different article, but eventually people start answering. But at this time it seemed like a desert. Hi Jcart, as the voting is well underway, I noticed that you hadn't voted yet. While I had told myself that I wouldn't actively solicit votes, the appearance of inactive users, like User:Nyarlathotep, who seems to stroll in here just to vote, made me change my mind. Since you nominated me, I hope I can count on your vote. I really don't care all that much, but I think the active users should vote more than those on other Wiki projects who happen to have creater a username here too. Please encourage other active users to vote (for whomever they like, but they should participate). Cheers, --SVTCobra 00:59, 21 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pic licensing

Hi JC. I see you're active at the moment. I left a question on Markie's page, as he changed the license on a pic I uploaded, but then noticed that he wrote he was going off line. Do you know why he changed the license, and could you point me to a page which explains Wiki News Image licenses? Thanks! ChampCarGuy 01:49, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello ChampCarGuy. I am not entirely sure why Markie changed the licence. You can wait for a reply from him on that. However, just looking at the wording, you indicated that you "took this photo and release this low rez version to public domain." So, I am guessing that he changed it to PD based on that statement. Images are best uploaded to [Commons]. You can get all the information on licencing there. Then the image can be used across all Wikimedia projects, including Wikinews. A user here, Adambro, is an expert on licencing requirements. You may wish to bounce some questions off him. Wikinews image use policy can be found here. Hope this helps. Cheers, --Jcart1534 02:11, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

UN Aid Convoys

Any reason you're not accredited? I looked at the UN aid convoys story and I think you should have been asking those questions from a Wikinewsie.org address to have a bit more street cred.

Anyway, the main thing I wanted to ask about was can you follow up on this and perhaps get a couple of email addresses to interview WFP people who're on the ground in Darfur? Everyone knows there are problems in the region, and conflict, but getting an eye-witness report would make a great story. --Brian McNeil / talk 17:30, 28 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Brian. I guess the short answer is that I haven't needed accrediation. I think I can get by without it for now. I'll check with my contact at WFP to see if I can get referrals to field staff, or if they other suggestions. They've been helpful with my requests so far. My sense is that they are frustrated with what is happening on the ground but can't point fingers - not wanting to jeopardize their access. I'll check in with you later to bounce some ideas around. Cheers, Jcart1534 13:57, 29 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

no sweat. just thought it might serve up a few questions to ask. –Doldrums(talk) 17:14, 29 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Lead

I think you should do it if you think it is appropriate. I don't like to put my own stories in the main lead, and I think I only did it once when the lead was over two days old. I do think it would be right by virtue of the article dates. The Taliban/S Korea hostage situation is a volatile one and will likely spawn a new article today (UTC July 31) and may recapture the main lead (I sound like I am reporting on the Tour de France). --SVTCobra 01:30, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Done! I do think it is appropriate. Keeps it fresh. Check the image size for me. I am not always sure (too big...too small). Jcart1534 01:35, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would like to say thank you for your input on the article for Peace activist proposing fast for freedom. I did realize the cinflict in the logo and the venue and discussed is with the logo designer and the founder....they are wanting to keep it. I also thought that the logo needed to be revised. I appreciate all your hard work and seeing the potential in the article and helping. This was my first article and being on the main page with Endevour returning is a great feat. Hey thanks for your help in pointing out my copyright violation in my Michael Vick article. I never knew the exact copyright laws until today when I did a little research. Deletion?

What happened?my page was approved by administration and then deleted?Niacey 17:17, 24 August 2007 (UTC)NiaceyReply

Yes, Niacey, it was deleted. It went through a deletion request vote and consensus was that it did not conform to article standards. Jcart1534 17:22, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

But i wasnt the one that published it! Wikinews did! I set the article as ready and the administration published it..What now?Niacey 17:33, 24 August 2007 (UTC)NiaceyReply

Yes we did publish it, but through user comments, and that from other admins, community input was sought on the appropriateness of the article as is. Hence the deletion request vote. I left a message on your user page, which should give you some ideas how to pursue the story. Cheers, Jcart1534 17:42, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

iPhone Bid

Hi Jcart, Not sure what source you looked at but the ebay link is ebay auction and has now reach US$99,000,000.00 Boylo 00:25, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

lol. $99,000,000! That is ridiculous! You are right, though, BrassMonkey (Boylo) so I'll correct it. For the article, all facts have to be sourced. I referenced the listed source from Associated Press. If we are to use the ebay value, we need to have it listed. I'll go ahead and add it as an external link. Thanks! Jcart1534 00:35, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah its hard to believe but thats what the auction states. Looks like he could become very wealthy if those bids turn out genuine Boylo 00:39, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi SVTCobra. Nice to see you back! I did delete it as per the DR vote, but the user resurrected it. I think they are hoping to work it into an article that meets the requirements. I suggested they request an interview, as there aren't any real sources etc. However, they seem to have abandoned it... Cheers, Jcart1534 01:03, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The event dosent occur until 08/08/08..I am confused...I am not getting any feed back that is usefull anymore.Niacey 13:03, 30 August 2007 (UTC)NiaceyReply
In terms of posting it as "ready", you don't need to worry. Anyone can see from the history who made the changes. What I have been patiently trying to tell you is this, "I think with your story, perhaps you might be best to request an inverview with an accredited wikinews reporter." Here is how things work. This is a wiki. Anyone can edit an article. However, the article must meet some standards. After consideration and some community consensus, the article was deemed not appropriate as a Wikinews article and was deleted. You chose to resurrect the same article. I have not commented on the resurrected version. Anyone else can comment on it, and may have a different take on it. I think some of the more veteran contributors are having difficulty with it at the moment because there are no true news sources for this. It comes across simply as an announcement for an event in the future that a couple of people have thought up. There is no news story there. That is why I have suggested you start over, not by resurrecting the same deleted article, but by requesting an interview through the proper channels. Even then, I am not sure that there is a story there. Maybe there is, but it is the only approach I can see when there are no hard facts or data to work with - more of a human story that needs to be developed as such. I have to say, also, that I don't appreciate you suggesting on TheFearow's talk page that I suggested you weren't "allowed to post anything." I said no such thing. Regards, Jcart1534 13:36, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I apoligize for the "that I wasnt allowed to post anything?.?" Didnt come out right. It was suppose to be a question in regards to not being a an accredited journalist am I not allowed to post anything...But now I am understanding the concept. Rules are good,I see they can be VERY beneficial here...Keeps the trouble away and the News accurate. Hey, just curious if there was a reason why you removed this template while prepping for archive. irid:t 09:46, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, there is no reason Ironiridis. It was likely a mistake. I have been moving that template lower down, just below the text of the article (just above related or sources) and I probably forgot to "paste" it. That's all. Have a look at the other Larry Craig articles to see what I've done. Cheers, Jcart1534 10:53, 19 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Archiving

Jcart, you know how much I appreciate your archiving efforts. This one (Sub-prime lenders send jitters through global markets) slipped through your net it seems. I know I have the tools to do it myself, but you do it so well. Thanks, --SVTCobra 01:10, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi SVTCobra. I archived this one, but note that I have only done all the ones since July 1, 2007. There are, unfortunately, very many (hundreds?) older ones that haven't been archived properly. I just picked something manageable (current ones 1 or 2 weeks old) and am trying to keep up when I can. Jcart1534 01:39, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, that was about the last thing I wanted to hear. I will touch base with you about this when I have time (probably in November). --SVTCobra 01:48, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Actually, if you can help me to remember that'd help. I am old. --SVTCobra 01:52, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Great, we're in the same boat! Check out the note below from Ironiridis. He's going to identify the non-archived articles. That is a good start. Cheers, Jcart1534 01:59, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Archive backlog

I'm coming up with a solution that, in a couple days, will list all articles either missing the archive tag or missing protection older than September 1st, 2007. Would that please the oh-so-great archiver? Then we can make it a community effort. :) irid:t 01:50, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

You bet! Sounds like a good plan. Maybe a month or two ago, someone had tried a bot to run through and archive a bunch automatically. Can't recall what came of that. I'd pop in to IRC, but have to head out for a bit. Jcart1534 02:02, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Archiving Before September 8

See WN:AAA under "anything else" for where I left off on archiving. Since you are the most active at it, Anything BEFORE Sept. 8, 2007 needs to be checked and archived with a archive tag, if needed...I mean everything :) DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 14:44, 29 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I saw that. I have everything done from July 1, 2007 to September 11, 2007. But there are hundreds (or more!) left to do from before July 1 now. It is a huge task! What I have been doing is to pick something manageable, which was to keep about a week + a day back from the current date. For instance, articles older than September 22 could and should be archived. Cheers, Jcart1534 15:34, 29 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the kindness, guys. This is a great community and I really enjoyed working with you all. But I was rattled a bit by a run-in with a user, and it made me re-evaluate a lot of things. It is quite clear that I have to do this. I may pop in from time to time. It is a hard habit to shake! Anyway, happy editing. All the best, Jcart1534 20:55, 30 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

If you listen to Edbrown or any of his alleged sock puppets or the stupid vandals that come around here, then yes they will bother you. But that is no reason to leave. Edbrown05 has issues, to which most of us do not understand, and refuses to talk, but instead just rants. Attacks are not allowed. PERIOD. And if that is what he is doing to you, let me or another Admin know ASAP. Please do not let him or the other vandals get to you. If I let that happen, I would have disappeared a few days after I joined Wikinews. So please reconsider. Don't let the non-productive users get to you. I absolutely support what has been said above and am VERY glad to this. You may only hear from one user who thinks that your contributions/work here is poor but many others of us have not said how good they are and i think that it's us at fault. BDSM article

I don't see anything wrong with using a provocative image, and a little provocation isn't so bad for us. We also used a provocative image without incident last week for days. But I don't like the "Exclusive Interview" template and the front page is bland enough without blanding it up more when we have free content at our disposal that relates directly to what is a provocative interview. --David Shankbone 22:11, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

That's fine David, but I don't agree. I would prefer to see something less sensational or tabloidish on the main page, even if the article itself is provocative. Maybe I'm a prude? lol. Jcart1534 22:47, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't think it is sensational or tabloidish. It's simply a photo that demonstrates the content of the interview accurately, and shows all three interviewees. --David Shankbone 22:55, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well it does demonstrate the interview accurately, I'll give you that, but all I see of the three interviewees are two arses and one face! :) Jcart1534 23:20, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
