Places to go, people to meet Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion. There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

images from other news organization

Just a reminder, you can't upload images from somebody competiting with us. So any image from another news organization is not ok.(The exception being if the article is about something that the competiting news organization did, like CNN typo mixes up prospective U.S. presidential candidate with Osama bin Laden.) • Just to add to that, you might find something like a VoA article where you could reuse the images; however, that would require it to actually be an image they owned and thus, per their remit, released into the public domain. Chile portal

Disagree with Speedy Deletion

I object to you putting a "speedy delete" tag on my Wikinews article "New Zealand swimming team for 2010 Commonwealth Games" — Wikinews, {{{2}}} (the Commonwealth Games category still has a similar article on the Welsh 2006 swim team!) Hugo99 (talk) 03:46, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

Your bot

Diego, if the only thing your bot's going to be doing is capitalising "special:/user:" and putting spaces after bullets, maybe you shouldn't run it at all? Especially to talk and policy pages, where it changes the meaning of users' posts? It looks exactly the same either way, it's honestly just pointless edits. Also, please make sure the machine doesn't remove legitimate links; that's already happened twice and it could be looking at a bot-block if it persists. I thin what Tempo is trying to say (Tempo, please correct me if I'm mistaken) is that maybe your bot is doing much. I was watching the recent changes (avoiding WP for a few hours after the shitstorm I created yesterday) earlier and I have to say it was bordering on flooded by your bot and the edits it was making didn't seem to be doing anything consequential. Maybe it might not be such a good idea to run it- if it was doing that on WP, I have to say, it would never get BAG approval. I admire your skill at being able to write a bot, it's not something I could hope to do, but perhaps it might be an idea to leave it for a bit? A few notes

Diego, this feels kind of odd to be asking of you since you're far more established here than I am, but, please be more careful, particularly when reverting edits. For example, undoing a brand new editor's change without any more explanation than "no" is most unhelpful. On another note, I feel it would have been wise to leave this publish for a few more minutes- it needed a few aesthetic changes before publication which I was in the process of making when you published it. There are other examples, but I just want to get my point across. You need to think before you press buttons- undoing that edit with that summary was very bitey and publishing articles is not a race- if a better article results from leaving it for half an hour, that's a better result than having an imperfect article published. Longer statement

Fox News's attempt to slime us for hosting artworks seems to have mostly blown over, which was pretty predictable, and would likely have happened far faster if it weren't for Jimbo's attempted cover-up. So long as we can point to a compelling educational value in our controversial images, it would be hard to really attack us and make us stick. Indeed, had Jimbo acted sensibly, he'd have made a press release pointing out the educational value of hosting notable works by French Decadent artists, and Fox News would've had a much weaker article that didn't include them being able to talk about "thousands" of deletions - and yet look at how much remains! (It was actually about 400 deletions, before the undeletions started. One suspects Jimbo's the one that fed them that thousands line somehow, not bothering to check, and... well, that's speculation.) Anyway, this would've been more-or-less over with, had sensible behaviour reigned.

But our defense depends on educational value. If the images don't have a legitimate educational value, if they're only intended to provoke, shock, and push the boundaries, with no artistic, historical, or educational value, then we're going to find it hard to defend ourselves. So we probably do need a policy on sexual content, but it can't be based on lies about laws, or knee-jerk capitulations to a scandalmongering media outlet: Instead, it needs to be about education.

Competent behaviour by Jimbo would've resulted in a review of the educational value of our images, and I'm sure that we'd have found some which should've been deleted. I don't know, honestly, I'm not that interested in photography, and don't really want to look at random pornographic images, in deletion logs that require you to click through to the full-sized image just to find out what they were. But notable artworks attacked and deleted, including some from my own field of expertise, engravings.

Look at it this way. One of my favourite engravers, and one which I have quite a number of Featured Pictures from, is Gustave Doré. His engravings to Dante's Inferno, which I only own a rather beaten-up copy of (though with the engravings themselves in good condition) are considered some of the best illustrations produced for Dante's work. However, the Inferno contains nudity and a lot of extreme violence. Doré depicts that. Now, imagine my reaction to seeing Jimbo deleting artworks as pornographic, at the same time as advocating for sadomasochistic works to be included in the list, and refusing to talk about where the line's going to be drawn until he's deleted everything - and that immediately after he had seemingly agreed artworks should be protected, and is now deleting artworks. That's pretty much how I got involved with this. Artworks I love, which are considered some of the masterworks of engraving, contain some incidental nudity, and some fairly extreme violence, because that's what the book they're illustrating is like. Who knew where it was going to end?

It's very hard to rebuild a destroyed collection. If we delete, as Jimbo did, Felicien Rops and Franz von Bayros - notable artists with their own articles on English Wikipedia - can we ever get their works back? My experience has shown that we don't have a lot of things you'd think we would in engravings, and have very few contributors of new scans of them. Once we decide artworks are pornography, even if this interpretation exists only in the mind of Fox News and Jimbo, how can I trust him not to suddenly decide that this illustration of The Inferno isn't pornographic too, deleting hours of work? Or deciding that Loki being tied naked to a rock with a snake dripping venom on him was BDSM, and so had to be deleted? How about this image from the Library of Congress, which I think is A. a horrible image, but B. does an exceptionally good job at illustrating why The Taming of the Shrew is rather uncomfortable to modern audiences, by bringing out the inherent misogyny?

Jimbo wrote that he "had thought that a good process would be to engage in a very strong series of deletions, including of some historical images, and then to have a careful discussion about rebuilding. That proved to be very unpopular and so I regret it. It also may have had the effect of confusing people about my own position on what to keep and what to get rid of."

However, when challenged about one of the artworks he deleted, he wrote that "I have redeleted the image for the duration of the cleanup project. We will have a solid discussion about whether Commons should ever host pornography and under what circumstances at a later day - June 1st will be a fine time to start."

In short, he was acting in a way that he says was "confusing people about [his] own position on what to keep" while he point-blank refused to discuss any of his actions for nearly an entire month.

Is it any wonder, in those circumstances, that people got upset, and that there was no way of telling where it would end?

Diego: An obituary is more than just an article about someone's death. Reinforcing our guideline for approaching interviewees

I notice that you told Adam Cuerden: "The interview is for Wikinews, by the way." Surprisingly (to me) your source was unaware that no one can promise publication, and Wikinewsies can only represent ourselves as individuals, not a group or community.

In future, it is best to avoid mentioning Wikinews unless asked. Allow me to remind you of the words in bold near the bottom of WN:OR: "when contacting sources, you must represent yourself as an independent author/researcher, not as a 'representative' of Wikinews."

Your mistake was one of omission. I put it down to your inexperience, and a quite reasonable expectation that Mr Cuerden was aware of how wikis such as Wikinews operate.

Stuff happens, especially to inexperienced Wikinewsies, like me: a year ago I taped some interviews that didn't get published due to circumstances. (I am glad I remembered not to mention Wikinews. I may not get friendly treatment the next time those sources see my face, but Wikinews is unharmed.)

I suggest (from my shared inexperience):

1. Offer a polite personal apology to Mr Cuerden for giving him false expectations. (His misunderstanding is your fault.)
2. Don't be discouraged. Keep politely gathering news (OR). I suspect that professionalism only takes experience to learn.

Actually, it was unpublished

Just to be clear, the article was not published at the time I removed it from the lead. It had been published, briefly, but it wasn't anymore since Brian McNeil had removed the template. Without the template, it was not in Category:Published, and therefore it didn't appear on the DPL on the main page — even though it did appear as a lead. Justin Bieber on main page

Hi Diego. As I said in my edit summary, he does have a huge fanbase, and having that on the front page will bring them into the site. If just one of those then chooses to stay and edit, that's A Good Thing. Personally, I have no interest in him. As for saying "it's not news", then why was it not nuked, or declined at the reviewing stage. One of the criteria is that it has to be news for it to be published, and this was published (I do note it wasn't you who reviewed and okayed it). Seems a bit elitist to me to say its newsworthy enough go be published, but we can't let people read it. Does the Main Pag. e have topics that are banned? If so I wasn't aware. It looks like diego tried to publish the article [5] but easy peer review failed. If easy peer review didn't detect it failed (it should detect, but it doesn't always as its a piece of crap ;) ), it presents diego with the success screen, which advises him to use Make Lead. Well, Wikinews doesn't need something new, it needs people reviewing the good articles we're already writing...Why are we so against it? I'm so against it because it's the confluence of a few bad ideas: Wackynews (which is often tenuously "wacky"), Shorts (which never get reviewed on time) and Notnews. Pi zero, nothing that I did with "Fire in the Hole" was really controversial rather than moving pages, something I could not do with my main account because it triggered the abuse filter "Pattern vandalism #4", that disallowed me the right to move 'em. Otherwise, I would have done them by myself. Also, I reviewed one page with it, but it clearly showed my name, I have nothing to hide. I still can't move pages. That's my reasoning. Um, that's not what I meant. It's not that you did anything controversial with Fire in the Hole, it's that you did something controversial, period. Therefore, you need to have the means to do controversial things without the flood flag, which is the ethical way to do them. An admin would just temporarily de-flood themself. Since you have to ask someone else to toggle the flag for you, and that's not practical when something comes up that you want to act on in real time, as long as you're hanging on to the flood flag for an extended period, you need to have an account available to you that doesn't have flood.

I acknowledge the page move problem is a puzzle. You could, I suppose (but am not fond of this idea), temporarily have two alternate accounts, one with and one without the flood flag; the pre-existing one would have to have the flood flag, because the second alternate would be new and therefore incapable of moving pages. If you've got a better way to reconcile the needs for a non-flood account and a move-capable flood account, I'd be glad to hear it. --Pi zero (talk) 18:34, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

ShakataGaNai is, apparently, going to review what I consider their disruption and descent into adversarial Usenet-style debate. Would that there were more contributors of my own age who remember Usenet. All that is missing, so far, is invocation of Godwin's Law.

Just guessing — if Diego used HotCat on the revision that's displayed when EPR completes, that would... I think... erase the changes to the page by EPR, because HotCat would be working off the revision just before the EPR edits.

A thought on archiving

When archiving an article, I recommend always adding the {{Archive}} tag before you protect the article. That way, if the article was on the main page, it will be removed from the main page (by the tag) before you protect it. --Pi zero (talk) 03:02, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

Ummm

The article that I recently created on Saturday, will not be updated, so delete. This is the reason why I say that you need to worry about these articles that easily goes out of date faster before the others. If this place can't have up to date news coming in how do you even expect people to review these when they are freaken 5 days old. I understand that this doesn't have a lot of reviewers, but this is pitiful. I know they can review more articles than this. I try when I can, but with real life issues, I am not able to. Also I seen that the Formula One article was published.......From now on the NASCAR articles will be the same!!!!!! Which means it should even have to be checked it it has the same type of sources and the same words. Now give me a break. This is very frustrating. Furthermore, I don't see how it is out of date, I normally create them on Tuesday, then they are normally reviewed on today. It seems like since Tempo left this is dead! • Harping on about Tempodivalse is most unproductive. First, writing up coverage of a sporting event two days after it took place is already bordering on stale. The Russian guy who does F1 coverage kicks out his articles a few hours after the race ends; and it is not "parochial". Formula One has a wide, international audience - in stark contrast to the US-centric nature of Nascar. We have all lost articles on staleness grounds; the best way to avoid such is to submit outstanding copy. Anything looking in need of a couple hours copyediting before an actual review is always given lower priority. Turkey lifts ban on YouTube‎

Actually, this article wasn't due to be archived until tomorrow (when it would have been the only one archived; there won't be any to archive now for over 46 hours). Only articles published on the 31st were due for archiving tonight. Which means nothing was due to be archived tonight, because there were no articles published on the 31st. That's happened several times lately; there weren't any on the 5th, either, and almost weren't any on the 6th.

I always keep track of what to archive using the list at WN:ARCHIVE#To archive.

(Reminder, in these grim times: add the archive tag first — and a further wrinkle I learned the hard way: make sure it's really off the main page before protecting it. A null edit to the main page may be required to make this happen. You seem to be a very good person to ask this. I have an odd feeling that the problem is me. Several users have left during my time at Wikinews, and I haven't noticed anything else. Sigh. Well, you need to slow down some. There were trouble signs on this article, visible with some time to study it. Two main authors, neither one of whom has ever written a Wikinews article before, and one of whom (the one whose material was at the front) had apparently no experience at all of Wikinews. Statements in the text that are highly suspect before one even tries to check them in the sources — I never have attempted to do a thorough fact-check, just chosen specific suspicious passages and tried to check them (and every one of those suspicious passages I ended up removing or greatly modifying). I think it has been unfortunate for too long that there has been hostility from Wikinews towards Wikipedia and towards me in particular. I can report that many people have simply stayed away because of it - "why bother dealing with such attitudes?" is a natural response from many people.

I have given similar advice to many projects: removing rights of any kind from people we know full well are trustworthy on such slim grounds as "good security" (in this case, for example, security against what exactly?) or "they haven't made any edits here in a long time" is a bad idea. A better idea is to find people who have rights, for whatever reason, and reach out to them with an attitude of trust and kindness: "Hey, Jimbo, I noticed you have reviewer rights on Wikinews and haven't used them. I wonder if you'd like to come on IRC sometime and get a tutorial and see what we're doing with it - I think you'll find it fun and interesting, and we'd love your support."

Instead I got this frankly bizarre and combative discussion. To the extent that people are treated in this way generally, Wikinews will continue to be less successful than it deserves.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 13:43, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Miyagi

Sendai is a city, Miyagi is a prefecture (a province or a state equivalent for Japan). Sendai is in Miyagi. The quake was off Miyagi. The tsunami damage is greatest in the Tohoku region (a region is a group of prefectures). So, the Japanese Meteorological Agency (responsible for tsunami forecasts) refers to it as Tohoku. Recent 'drama'

I hope my recent contributions in an effort to defuse an unacceptable situation meet with your approval.

You may note the "post-mortem" item on a sub-page of Geoff's talk; your comments on that, subsectioned, would be most welcome.

Geoff starting on, what I felt was an attempt to lay groundwork for defence of later outbusts, isn't. A followup in the same form based on the actual version reviewed may reinforce that more-than-serious quality concerns existed; plus any remarks on xe's response to what I characterised as a "terse rejection"(see xyr talk).

Obviously I'd want my advice on WN:AAA considered, possibly given clear indication it meets with community consensus, and a strict interpretation and application of action suggested therein.

Three articles in five minutes

(Might as well get this over with. Shudder.)

Diego, you published three articles in five minutes, with no edits to any of them, and no edits to any of several other articles you'd published in the hours before. Two of those last three had international-audience issues with the first sentence (and one with the headline), all three had some shortage of categories and the one that didn't have international-audience issues had severe under-categorization, and at least the last one had bigger issues — a rambling first paragraph starting and ending with purple prose... Even after pulling the poetry I've grave doubts the article as a whole is properly neutral (but I physically can't do the sort of in-depth study necessary to be sure — it's 3am where I am, and after at least three all-nighters for Wikinews in as may weeks I simply don't have it in me).

Don't ever rubber stamp articles. (BarkingFish's dereviewer, only recently ended you will note, left us one more critical reviewer shorthanded for the lowest-output months in the history of the project.)

As a simple technique that may be of great help, make a point of always looking for some useful edit to make to an article before publishing it. It helps keep you from rushing past yourself, it helps you focus, it keeps you on your toes — and it also keeps the author on xyr toes, seeing visible evidence of the reviewer's edit reminding them to keep striving to do better. --Pi zero (talk) 07:08, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Standards needed for translations

Please see the remarks at Talk:English_actress_Elizabeth_Taylor_dies_at_age_79#Are_the_Spanish_sources_really_necessary.3F There are serious problems with one author using his Spanish translation of an article on an English actress. Usually (on other sites), a translation should be checked by two people. Also, you asked a reviewer who is not fluent in Spanish to review/publish the article. How is he supposed to fact check the sources? This is essentially one man's translation of an unknown author's article with no oversight.

Besides, why use a Spanish translation for an article on an English actress. The readers (remember them) are primarily English-speaking on this site, and will be unable to read the sources for themselves. The sources are for the readers too, as I am sure you know.

Who is the author of the translated article anyway? You?

I find the publication of this article disturbing and not a credit to wikinews IMO. The many grammatical errors found by reviewers show the original translation was poor. And as Gopher6 points out in the link above, words have culturally based meanings that don't translate easily. I don't have trust in you.

The article on a influential actress is very superficial. It doesn't even mention that she was known for her beauty but rather her "personality" only. Frustrated, I resorted to the web and found many fascinating articles on Elizabeth Taylor. IMO, this one should never have been published. English sources on an English actress are much more appropriate. Use of English sources would have resulted in a much more interesting and complete article. I don't do translation stuff very often, I do create articles that are relevant to my country (Spanish-speaking), and I try to help the reviewers through IRC (I ask them to review them by there), if they've got any question about the content (maybe stupid transliterations?). Please read for the sake of wikinews

Here's my understanding of policy on this matter: English sources are much preferred both from the point of view of a reviewer and as a reader. Use of English sources should take precedence over non-English sources. When no English sources are available (as happens occasionally), it is permissible to use non-English sources. Here's the reasoning behind that:

Reader: The reader may want to read further the subject of the article, or they may want to check up on us. Either way, that's easier with English sources than non-English sources. (Note that we prefer to direct them to internal Wikinews stories when possible, and after that to other WMF sites (like Wikipedia or Wiktionary). External sources are the last place we want our readers to go, after they have exhausted all that we and our sister sites have to offer.)

Reviewer: Reviewers want to review perfect articles. That makes the reviewer's job easier. The easier their job is, the longer it takes each individual reviewer to "burn out", and the faster any given article will get reviewed. Every little thing that makes the review harder to do slows the process, and burns through the available time and effort that each reviewer has to offer.

Example: it takes me 15 minutes or so to factcheck, copycheck, format, and categorize (etc) an article written by someone like C628. One of Deigo's Spanish-sourced articles usually takes me closer to an hour and a half. That's a big block of time to devote to reviewing a single article. In many cases it takes longer to review a non-English sourced article than it does to write it. Part of it is just doing the basic fact/copycheck, but almost as big a time sink is trying to fix odd translations that don't quite sit well with native English speakers, or trying to figure out what the cultural translation of a quote would be.

A surprising percentage of the things that we say are culturally based. The classic example from Star Trek: TNG is saying "Romeo and Juliet" to an alien and a human. The words themselves are meaningless (they're just proper nouns (and an article if you're going to be nitpicky about it. Eeesh! You people. :P)), but the cultural meaning is significant. To the alien it means nothing, to the human it conjures up a vague feeling of romanticism, or maybe young love (although I'd contend that the play was actually about the failure of the families of the titular characters to properly deal with the infatuation, rather than being a story that has anything to do with love, or even with the impropriety of the main character's actions). The same lack of cultural knowledge that prevents an alien from understanding the words "Romeo and Juliet" followed by a wink and a nudge, also prevents people who speak different languages from understanding each other's cultural phrases. Back to reviewing, it's not Deigo's fault that his articles are hard to review; weirdness and timesickage are just in the nature of translating. Gopher65_talk 01:19, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

I've seen one user has announced their retirement from the project, that's okay, it's their decision, while the other has said "it may be deemed inappropriate" to block because of something that happened in the Comments namespace: let me tell you, the Comments namespace is still in the Wikinews wiki, it isn't in outer space and there are policies to follow. I'm not just going to call you all "fucking assraped faggots" there because I am almost sure nobody will block me there; no, it simply doesn't work out that way. First: please post to WN:AAA#Anything else stating what you did and why. You should do that when taking an admin action that is potentially controversial in an out-of-the-ordinary way. I would rather you posted there, rather than leaving it to someone else; if started by someone else (me, say) it would seem like a complaint, whereas from you it would be merely an acknowledgement that the action wasn't altogether routine. There definitely should be a thread there about it; at the very least, it leaves a record in a standard place where people can find it.

Some thoughts on the action.

• There aren't policies; that's kind of the point. Written policy on Wikinews is often behind the curve, and comments namespace operates under a different set of rules.
• If users were discussing the article, they could call each other fucking assraped faggots and expect to be quite safe in doing so.
• They weren't discussing the article or anything remotely related to it anymore, and imho that's the only reason you're not unequivocally wrong to have blocked them.
• Even if the block itself is supported, 24 hours might have been overdoing it. Blocking potentially productive Wikinewsies is hard on the project, because articles can suffer a lot, perhaps fatally, from say 24 hours of neglect. That's one of the reasons I dislike blocks for squabbles between potentially productively Wikinewsies.

Spanish news

Maybe you could ask a few people in your family/town/university to join Wikinews to help with the work on Spanish articles? I don't know how these reviews happen (don't want to use automated translations myself). Most people I know don't speak English (well... my mother is the exception, but she probably does not give a shit about Wikinews)... I could still ask some classmates, though Google only fails at translating some localisms (?) perhaps quotes won't be the same as the provided in the article. When I was using it for archiving (I later decided it was better for the community to see the archiving, so they'd think "gee, we'd better write/review more articles to replace those"), I thought for a while I was fairly often forgetting to turn it off. Then I discovered that for some reason (I never figured out why), sometimes I'd click "Save user groups" and it wouldn't change anything. Yeah, I've blown the occasional fuse on Wikipedia about various bits of punctuation and grammar as well, heh. The real problem is that English doesn't have a standardized set of grammatical and spelling rules, but most people not only think that it does, they think that the conventions *they* grew up with are the correct ones, and everyone else is just being stupid.

At some point the language will probably either have to adhere to a single standard, or simply drop standardization attempts altogether and let people spell and punctuated stuff the way they want to... which is how it use to be, until recently. This would have been a really good moment to apply the "find a copyedit before publishing" rule. The article was uncategorized, which would have made for a dead-easy simple copyedit, and made a big difference in the impression left by the edit history. As is, the edit history really looks bad — published with no copyedits two minutes after the author's last substantive addition. For urgent news, I think the important thing is to get it out the door quickly and then fix it up post-publication. Who cares about the "impression left by the edit history"? The readers don't. The categories themselves aren't the issue. The appearance I'm talking about is that the edit history made it look like the review was a rubber stamp, and that appearance is bad for both project reputation and project morale. The only reason I mentioned the categories is that, because making some copyedit before publication would have been so valuable in this case, the categories would have been an easy way to provide such a copyedit.

Truthfully, I wasn't entirely comfortable with my second review of the article, after the fact. You did of course upgrade the notes considerably, but as you say, you should have done better. Indeed, you surely can do better, even if you are in a hurry, as long as you realize ahead of time that you need to jot down better notes. Which you now do realize, I hope.

I was uncomfortable enough that I consulted with BRS about it, who pointed out the specific difficulty with the meaning of "unidentified", leading me to submit the change to the article that I did.

I note your post to foundation-l wikinews-l. Unfortunate, that. The discussion of the fork there was very nearly 100% anti-Wikinews trolling —most responses there to my own one post, for example, demonstrated extraordinary lack of reading comprehension (no way to tell for sure if they really were unable to read and understand what I wrote, or were deliberately misunderstanding)— and it was rather pleasant when the thread finally petered out.

[Please note, I am an idiot, not even noticing your post was to wikinews-l rather than foundation-l. My being an idiot is nothing new, of course. :-) ]

A general thought, which I've been developing for some time and am now struggling to articulate. The value of Wikinews lies in its high standards — in no particular order,

• helping people to learn to self-distinguish between what facts they know reliably, what they suspect, and what is their opinion (including the importance of where information comes from — plus other stuff, of course, but those are the most profound, I think, skills that have immense value in life generally);
• presenting material to a reliably high standard; and
• giving people the opportunity to disseminate their work in a venue that certifies it's up to that standard.

(Sorry for the late response) Yep, Wikinews lies in its high standards, it's a good thing, I have nothing to say. I'm sure we all understand volunteers aren't paid at all and obviously won't produce reviews nor articles in a large scale. However, as I pointed out in the e-mail WN needs a "reform" re. the review process, and it needs it now, but I don't know how. "Relaxing" the process wouldn't solve the problem, auto-publishing wouldn't either. In one way we should fix this, otherwise WN will be losing potential contributors and users; note I'm not saying they'll migrate to OG, they'll probably won't bother to edit Wikimedia at all anymore. Software tools that help significantly with the mechanics of review would be good.

• I used to think multi-reviewer collaboration was a likely candidate, but that's clearly hard to do, it was never clear how well it would really work after all the trouble to make it happen, and at the moment it might not help much anyway with the low number of active reviewers.
• A task that seems to me to take up an awful lot of reviewer time and effort is matching sections of a Wikinews article against the corresponding sections of the sources. But for a tool like that to really work, it might have to avoid pattern-matching entirely — simple pattern-matching is apt to miss things, and advanced pattern-matching in this case seems scarcely short of full natural-language understanding. And the tool would have to avoid making one or another type of problem harder to see.

It really feels like the right tools could be a game-changer. The wrong tools, of course, could really mess things up. But if something as "simple" as the {{w}} template can make as big a difference as it does —and it's pretty much eradicated what used to be a noticeable source of tedium and mistakes— there ought to be some other well-chosen simple tools that would make a big difference.
